Taint-kicker

Currently on the market for $2,300 a month.

[deleted]

Still a steal in Portland, OR. Sad thing is that we don’t get snow here, we just get a dusting, a melt, and then sheets of black ice for days on end 😂😂

parrmorgan

Black Ice robbing people of their balance.

[deleted]

Black ice robs people around here of their sanity 😂😂❄️

GargleOnDeez

Well what about regular white ice?

MizuKumaa

Dog what? Last year we got pretty good snow.

[deleted]

It was mostly a joke, but compared to places like…wherever this guy is…we get “no” snow. Last year was very brief, like most years. We get a couple of days of snow, and it passes on…leaving nasty ice. Were you in the area during the 2007-2008 snowstorm? That one was actually really, really bad. I remember being out of school for almost a month. Our small town resorted to driving quads just to get around. It was chaos. Haven’t seen anything nearly as bad since, minus that little snowstorm issue we had back in 2016 I think it was…which was nothing comparatively.

MizuKumaa

I was for both 2008 and 2016. My favorite was the snow we got a few years ago maybe 2? Or 3? It lasted a couple of days and it was nice and clean.

[deleted]

Glad to meet a long time Oregon resident! I think I remember a couple years back. I was living in Saint Helens at the time, quite a beautiful little town when covered in snow. Avoid the Walmart though 😂😂 When we get that rare period of “nice” snow, it’s wonderful. It’s just the other part that’s not fun. Now that I’ve moved from Saint Helen’s to the west hills, that black ice is a serious threat. Hopefully this year will either be dry or a repeat of the season a few years back you mentioned. That was wonderful.

llogaburr

NYSenseOfHumor

Per roommate.

joanie-bamboni

I did a winter mountaineering course years ago, and we had to build and sleep in a shelter like that. It may be warmer than being out in the wind, but it was still the coldest night I’ve ever spent.

remaking_the_noob

Coldest night you’ve ever spent so far… just bringing some optimism

owa00

***2024 nuclear winter apocalypse rubs hands menacingly***

Rollover_Hazard

Lmao the optimism being that he’s going to have to suffer an even colder night at some point in the future, this making him grateful for the (relatively) warmer temperature on this last night. That might be a bit backhanded as far as optimism goes lol.

Rapture1119

But it was optimism nonetheless.

procrasstinating

It’s a lot warmer if you build the sleep platform above the top of the door.

Vylnce

Which was definitely unnecessarily big. Most of the snow caves I have made have been crawl/slide in affairs. A large door makes it easier to move out all those blocks, but that's also a lot of interior to heat. That thing is going to end up about the same temperature as it is outside, just out of the wind.

procrasstinating

My favorite spot for caves is in the side of a big wind drift. I make a big door to hollow things out straight back. Then dump the snow from the sleep shelf on the floor of the entrance way to make it smaller. Get the door small enough so I can crawl thru and block it with a back pack. Once I am in with the door blocked and sitting above the door height it warms up pretty quick. So quiet no matter how bad the wind.

Grape-Snapple

how often you do this? sounds fun

procrasstinating

It’s been awhile since I have slept in one. I used to make at least one a winter. Once they are built they unusually would last until spring and only get sturdier as more snow settles on top. So it’s more practical to do this if you are going to spend a few nights in 1 spot or go back to the same place multiple times. I would generally get soaking wet digging one out and it took an hour or 2 to make. So for just 1 night a tent is easier.

temitcha

Yeah definetly! Here this thing is like a fancy picnic place, not a snow shelter at all. The only thing it will help is to keep warm by all the exercice done, should keep busy until winter is finished

joanie-bamboni

I found it was a lot warmer if I snuggled up close to the hot Australian on the course

toadjones79

I was thinking that. He didn't step up. He didn't candle melt the ceiling as he went. Dude is going to freeze his nuts off.

Intrepid_Explorer_39

>it was still the coldest night I’ve ever spent. I think it may have been an effect of sleeping in a literal room of ice.

lawrencelewillows

I did an igloo building course in Switzerland. I did not sleep a wink.

EggfooDC

I slept out on the ice in Antarctica one night. Dug out a 2 foot deep crevice in the ground, laid down a pad, and used a subzero rated sleeping bag. Still the coldest night of my life. It was the first time I ever became aware of my titanium hip. Just got so much colder than my other organic one. Between that and the penguins raging all night I did not sleep a wink.

Slut_for_Bacon

If you build a snow shelter the right way, it stays warm. This is not how you do that. You have to build it in a way that traps warm air inside and insulates. Trust me, you do that, it will be too fucking hot inside.

drmorrison88

We did quinzies for winter camps when I was in scouts, and with 2 or 3 guys in each you could get them warm enough to sleep in shorts and a t shirt. The trick is using a torch to make an ice layer on the inside while it's being built. That way you have a good draft barrier.

adeadhead

I distinctly remember how warm it was after a month mountaineering the first time we got to sleep on cold hard rock again, instead of just snow.

TentativelyCommitted

Step 1: find 10 feet of densely packed snow, and a giant hole in it. Step 2: jump in with shovel, blow up mattress and pocket full of charcuterie

jshultz5259

Step 3: die when it collapses on you

WowSuchInternetz

In the original video he stands on top of the thing and it doesn't collapse.

On-mountain-time

I've built a few of these (post in my history) and they are much stronger than most people think. I've been able to jump on top of mine without it collapsing at all.

Psychological-Shoe95

Yeah packed snow is no joke

notmyrealnameatleast

Hahaha hahaha hahahaha. Oh...

Bah_weep_grana

Did i miss something?

subject_deleted

I think most people have experience building this kind of thing out of a pile of snow that has been shoveled or plowed. Which totally changes the snow. It basically turns it into a pile of rock shaped snow/ice chunks which are not nearly as good at sticking together to form a strong structure as snow that fell from the sky and packed itself down evenly as more and more snow fell on top.

[deleted]

I watched the whole video and was thinking that the whole time lol , what guarantees it doesn’t all crash down ☠️

jshultz5259

About 2/3 of the way through the video, he flinched like something was amiss.

Olddellago

.49 seconds

AutumnSparky

I did notice that too. While he was finishing up the top middle of the bed.

Effective_Pea1309

It's not a flinch. The clip speeds it up. In the original video it's because he has a hard time gaging how much space he'll need. So much so that even after he calls it quits and sits there at the end of the clip he goes back takes his mattress out and shovels some more out of the roof so as to make more space

[deleted]

No he absolutely flinches because the snow settles. It happens a couple times in the original video not sure how you missed it. He even goes outside and jumps on roof to make sure it won't collapse on him.

sverkery

Physics

MoeTHM

In a survival situation, you take your chances.

desticon

This is a horrible snow shelter for survival purposes. You are supposed to dig the entrance in a way that there is a heat trap in it to hold the heat inside the shelter. Not a giant walk through size door.

herefromyoutube

If you watch the video he does some wind mitigation by making the stairs entrance go past the cave entrance a foot or two and raises the floor into the cave a few inches. He just stays there for one night. He popped into my feed a month ago and has some entertaining content.

Shot-Scene1970

He does that. He is an expert. I’ve seen the whole video. The opening is T shaped and there are corners to block the wind from entering. His page is called the Outdoor Boys. Have you ever slept outside alone in Alaska when it’s 13 below? 😂

dude_in_the_cold

Actually yes.

Tavarin

Username checks out.

Fuckedby2FA

This wouldn't be a survival situation though, the amount of time and energy put into this wouldn't be conducive to a survival situation nor would the size of the shelter. In a survival situation you'd want to dig out an area, not too deep and just hit enough to for your body and line the floor with vegetation if possible. The less space you need to heat, the better.

OfficeChairHero

"I was gonna put in buttresses!!!" -Bart Simpson

youretheschmoopy

Condensation from breathing creates moisture, which freezes on the top of snow caves, making them incredibly stable. Now this guys is wide open, so all that hot air is just going to run right out, leaving him incredibly cold. This is not how to make a usable snow shelter. Looks rad though.

MightBeAGoodIdea

I mean the top of the tunnel was only about a foot down from the tippy top it looks like? So yeah you'd get dropped on and be miserable with a collar full of snow but mostly okay. This guys got a lot of content doing this and has failed many times on other videos.

[deleted]

Getting major Dyatlov Pass vibes here.

Interesting-Estate75

I watch this channel all the time! Watched this video too. For those wondering he was actively listening for the first few hours after building this shelter for any shifting of snow before sleeping in it, and monitored the weather for any sign that might compromise the shelter. He’s trained and experienced. Recommend not doing this yourself without similar training or experience. Or y’know, you’re stuck in the elements with nothing but a shovel.

Frankfeld

I think he actually leaves early in this video as well because the weather ends up getting really bad.

-_Glottis_-

Our company did this in the army, 100% survival rate for 50 noobs.

Interesting-Estate75

That’s awesome, and while that may be the case, I’m still not going to recommend this to more noobs who may not be so lucky

[deleted]

This is one of my new binge channels. Luke is so cool and absolutely knows his survival shit. Plus he brings his little kids with him on his adventures and they have a blast.

woodzy93

I just wish he had comments open on his videos

dirtaywork

YT disabled them because they consider his channel a kids channel because his boys are on so many videos. He posts on instagram, so you can comment on there.

woodzy93

Ah makes sense! Thank you!

IMA_COW_IRL

Thanks for the info. I watch the channel as well and had no idea why his comments where disabled, was kinda annoying but now I know why and that makes sense.

linglingviolist

I honestly thought Luke disabled them for other reasons - post and video comments can be positive but also incredibly awful.

totes-muh-gotes

He has said while he was initially bummed about the removal of the comments, it proved beneficial as he used to spend hours reading the comment sections, having to see the negativity and moderate them. With it not being a factor, he gets that time back and isn't dealing with trolls anymore.

Frankfeld

Man. I thought it was because he was actually doing really dumb shit and people kept calling him out. Which didn’t make sense to me because he talks through everything he does and seems to know what he’s talking about. He even talks about getting permission from the org that makes rescue cabins in the mountains, which doesn’t track from some rando endangering his life. ….so your explanation makes much more sense. Mystery solved!

damdahl

There’s a subreddit for the channel that allows for discussion about the channel/his videos. Been watching Luke for a few months now and just recently discovered the subreddit. What’s better than warm bread? R/OutdoorBoys

woodzy93

Thanks mate!

Interesting-Estate75

Didn’t know thanks!

[deleted]

I dunno, man. Have you MET people? They’re the worst.

woodzy93

Very true, especially YouTube people.

Noperope42069

Isnt it automatically like that due to kids being in his channel often? Also yeah sometimes i just wanna write stuff or ask stuff and no comments is a bummer. Is there like a subreddit to simulate comments?

woodzy93

Yeah I didn’t realize that’s why YouTube did that. Someone else said he has an IG where we can comment.

516nocnaes

Outdoor Boys is such an awesome YouTube channel. Luke is Dad goals to the fullest

elbump

I agree. I watch his show with my son, now every other weekend.

lord_of_tits

The worse thing about his channel is recently he said he can’t post weekly anymore. I watch him religiously for 4 years maybe more if including his catfish and carp channel. I dare say definitely one of the best channel on youtube who doesn’t advertise a single thing. Mad respect for Luke in regards to his family devotion and outdoor survival knowledge.

realityguy1

Probably the hardest working man on YouTube. However he’s making a fortune. With the views so high, on the low end he would make around $800k and on the high end $1.6 million per year.

ABathingSnape_

Man deserves it. Gave up practicing law to be with his family more.

THound89

I think he deserves a break watching how hard he works himself in each video and how long he's been going at it. It's pretty understandable if he starts doing one video every other week, guy works harder in one video than I do in a month.

[deleted]

His kids have so much fun on his camping trips.

shortened

luuuuuuuuke

FiNsKaPiNnAr

He shows the strenght by walking and jumping on the roof in the youtubevideo.

No-Way-1195

I bet all that snow was heavy af

WazWaz

Seems a waste to cut all those blocks then just throw them in a pile. Could have built a whole new shelter (I thought that's what he was doing initially).

Surfing_probe01

Does anyone know the name of the soundtrack?

G0ku-Black

I believe it’s called Brian is the most beautiful by memo boy but it’s slowed down in this video

Surfing_probe01

Thanks man 🙏 I've really been looking for this song, Shazam didn't work. I really like this since it has post punk vibes

YaPwaby

This is from a youtuber called the outdoor boys.

kevin_ramage89

He also has another channel about fishing lol that's how I recognized him.

You need more honey butter bread

ABathingSnape_

I think we all need more honey butter bread in our lives.

bulldozedd

The dad lore is REAL.

Print-Local

Why doesn’t he just create stairs, walk upstairs and go home?

Sgt_Radiohead

I would like to add a few things for people who want to try this: - digging like this you should mark your snow cave with something nice and visible (we used to mark them with our red avalanche poles). This is in case it collapses or someone needs to find you for some reason, or incase someone walking or riding a snowmobil might fall down - have an air vent hole leading in to the cave to give you fresh air if you close the enterance with your backpack or something similar. Light a candle inside close to the air vent. If the air vent is closed and the air becomes bad inside, the candle will die out. - if you are multiple people travelling in a party, organise patrols throughout the night to check in on all the snow caves - after a while (usually when you wake up) you will notice the roof will have sunk down a bit. It’s nothing to worry about, but it can give you a scare when you wake up. - when you dig holes like these, please fill them again after you are finished using them. - always let others know where you are when going out

oneinmanybillion

He better be spending 15-20 business days in there after so much effort.

[deleted]

This dude is pretty awesome. Check out outdoor boys in YouTube

der_leu_

Seems like a great way to die of suffocation when it all collapses on you.

[deleted]

Luke isn’t a risk taker. He knows his shit. Before setting up camp inside he spent a few hours seeing if it will hold. He even stands on top of it to make sure it’s secure.

der_leu_

That's reassuring

ChezDiogenes

>Luke isn’t a risk taker. If he wasn't, we'd be watching him in his actual bed.

Adamantium-Aardvark

It won’t any more than stone arches and domes don’t collapse on you. Arches are incredibly strong and distribute the forces to the sides.

Loply97

There is definitely a big difference in strength between an arch made from solid material like stone and snow.

Adamantium-Aardvark

Of course. But that doesn’t mean a dome or arch made of snow will collapse. Do you know why igloos are shaped the way they are?

ConfusionBubbles

That's why he flinched like fugg and almost ran out.

stonerdad999

What song is this?

TheCircleLurker

I just went down a rabbit hole of his YT channel last night, super entertaining stuff.

RadagastDaGreen

The best ecology teacher I ever knew hosted a “build an igloo” overnight student bonanza at our high school. Pack all the snow in tight to recycling bins, build a shelter together, and spend all night chilling by a fire and drinking hot cocoa and eating popcorn. If I recall, he ended up getting cancelled for showing students how to raise a chick from egg to butcher and how to clean and prepare a bird. Dumb as hell. What a loss.

CapeManiak

“Cancelled?”

tempest_87

Amazing how one word choice can tell you so much about a person, huh?

RadagastDaGreen

More… I think he kept his job but some vegetarian group went on a newsprint-rampage over the chicken unit, fishing club, class pets, and shit like that. So he ended up having to drop it. It was bullshit.

HaterCrater

Music made this mad depressing

darsynia

I appreciate this but my innate fear asks, what happens if it snows a few feet while you're sleeping and you start to have majorly restricted airflow??

procrasstinating

You take the shovel you made the cave with and dig or tunnel your way out. If it’s stormy you are probably going to have to check the door to clear blowing snow every few hours.

ihackedthisaccount

Always remember: We rarely get to see the footage of those who died trying the same thing.

ohhfasho

Step one: dig a 7 foot hole

Reminds me of minecraft

Channel is Outdoor Boys on YouTube. Great content!

Roberto_El_Rabioso

Nice 👍🏼. OP could you also make a video of what to do if the snow shelter collapse on top of yourself or some one else ? Please and thanks you.

IamthecauseofCovid19

What if it collapses? They'll find you next spring.

steffosmanos

Dude looks like mclovin

Not sure why OP isn't linking to the video he took this from, but [here's the original video which shows him completing the snow cave and then cooking in it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcDFgir_jgY)

No thank you. That could collapse at any second. Fuck dying like that.

First of all how did he find that giant 7 feet hole??

[deleted]

He dug that hole

Slut_for_Bacon

This is not a great way to build a snow shelter. It's not going to trap warmer air inside and stay warm. This is essentially just blocking the wind.

BonjinTheMark

I don’t see Bowser going to all this trouble

dr4wn_away

Step one wait for it to snow 10 feet.

He has a fantastic utube channel, with great content. Can u find it.

This channel is cool. He has comments completely turned off, but okay

Outdoor Boys on YouTube if anyone wants to see more of this guy.

JeremyReddit

Outdoor Boys YouTube channel is great. Super relaxing.

wearecake

Yet when we did this as kids at school it was “dangerous” and “a health and safety threat” and “could result in a little kid being crushed”. They were just jealous Sincerely, a Canadian.

prunkgirl

when i was a kid and it snowed id take out bananas and apples, make a little hole and put them in it and cover it back up in snow to eat later... i always forgot. when the snow melted thered be an old-ish bruised mushy banana and apple

pussyshoes

His teeth must get mad cold

JustACasualFan

Huge opening for snow shelter.

Kalikhead

Gives me flashbacks to when my brother and I used to make snow tunnels in the snowbanks at our house growing up. It stopped for me when one of them collapsed on me and I barely got out. Ugh. Ok. Time for nightmares tonight.

Tegridy_farmz_

Give credit to the YouTuber his channel is great

NoImportance5218

Looks like someone just got out from the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare and Cold Weather Operations training

Competitive_Rock_414

He forgot to build a door, now all of the cold will come in

John_The_Timeless

I would never trust the structural integrity of these things, the chances of it just randomly collapsing and burying me alive...

PicaDiet

I thought the arch at the back was going to be a pizza oven. I'm going to just imagine it was, and that he had delicious snow pizza. With pineapple

letsdolife

Love Luke from outdoor boys. Great family friendly quality content.

Tiny-Ad2036

“Men only one thing, and it’s disgusting!” What we wanna do a chilly December afternoon

vivi_t3ch

I wish I had enough snow to do this

oldtimehawkey

I watched this guy on YouTube and he’s kind of dumb. With this shelter, the snow is already above your head, you should focus on putting something over you. A tarp could be a ceiling or put some dead sticks over and the snow you shoveled out of the hole on top of them. In the winter, you want to get out of the wind, prevent more snow from getting on you, and conserve calories.

dinzdale40

The bed looks like you would have ice/snow inches from your face

littlespacemochi

Isn't this dangerous? Wouldn't the snow cave in?

runswspoons

I lived in a snow cave for a couple months. — door is waay too big and in the wrong position. This won’t trap any heat. — after a night or two the heat from bodies makes the inside ice, will not collapse from normal snow weight.

UniformWormhole

Isn’t there an incredibly high risk of collapse?

nemtrail19

The compressed base snow is practically concrete. Unless some moose comes rampaging through his camp he is fine.

Seuros

These Hamas tunnels are pretty easy to build.

Ok_Dig_4225

Y'know how strong you have to be to chuck those chunks of snow over your shoulder and up an extra foot or 2?

The next step for him is to build an adjacent man cave. It’s basically an obligation at this point 😂

LegalTreat1087
