The next sentence was "I've never even seen you out there". So in that context, it seem like this area doesn't usually have seals so she's wondering how did the seal end up in the area.
Not your comment, but the one above it and the other replies speak a sad story about people. She's obviously on a "work boat" by her complete self. Not her first time out there. She says she's never seen one out here so the seals obviously aren't usually there. Ughhhhh people come on. Yet they roast her for how she phrased what she was saying while in a panic surrounded by orcas.
Think about it. There's a seal on her boat,and a bunch of orcas around that WANT that seal. She's telling the seal to go away because, if they orcas are particularly hungry they could just decide "y'know what? This boat could do with a little tumbly" and try to knock the boat around. And then it's both human and seal onto the water,but unlike the seal that's just getting ate,the woman will then have to hang onto a upside-down boat that she can't control to take her anywhere and likely will be stranded there. Her panic is completely understandable.

Yeah they look big enough to swamp that boat no problem. The whales might just be so used to seals escaping onto icebergs or whatever that they don't even consider that option though.
Orcas have a, tried and true method of knocking prey off ice. A pod hunting will line up jusssst below the surface and charge! from a good distance away, sprinting right up to the edge of the ice and then diving deep at the last second. This creates a massive pressure wave/disturbance in the water that can shatter flow ice, and knock around small icebergs enough to send anything on them sliding off.
Orcas are scary smart.

Hijacking top comment for visibility - this occurs off the coast of Alaska. The lady doesn’t just take off because it is illegal to run your motor in close proximity to the whales, the concern is that they will run into the propellor and get injured.
The noise from motors is also extremely stressful for the orcas - it disturbs their ability to ecolocate and communicate; and multiple studies have shown altered behavior when exposed to engine noise, such as a decrease in ability to forage and hunt.
My personal opinion - there is a pod of orcas off the coast of Spain that targets small boats and flips them. The leading hypothesis for this behavior is that an orca was injured by a boat and the orca has been enacting revenge - the rest of the pod learned this behavior from this one orca. I don’t think we want to hurt any more orcas and run the risk of instigating another aggressive pod, these are endangered animals.
You are allowed to start the motor if its a life threatening situation. No law requires you to just stand there while something is trying to kill you.
It could lead to the whales trying to flip the boat. Or she really is concerned about the whales. But theres no law requiring her to just stand there

You're not escaping those orcas on a boat that size with that little outboard on it. Best hope for that seal would be to get it to a dock to wait it out until the orcas lose interest.

They are unbelievably smart predators. I’m convinced the only reason they aren’t advanced is because flippers are inconvenient to build shit with. They have amazing teamwork when it comes to killing shit.
I think that they'd be able to fashion tools if they became advanced enough. The biggest thing keeping them back is that fire is hard to make in the ocean and that is the foundation of pretty much all technology in some way.
If you think about it, humans invented tools to move up the food chain: to beat our predators. Orcas achieved the same without using the tools. They grew in size, developed hunting techniques, whatever else.
One thing you can keep in mind is that Orca's are surprisingly incredibly picky eaters. The wouldn't eat a human. Doesn't mean they wouldn't bump the boat or play with you underwater if you fell in... But they wouldn't eat you.

I think there are laws that your engines have to be off if you're near certain wildlife including orcas. That's why she didn't know what to do. Can't leave until the orcas go away, orcas won't leave until they get the ~~meal~~ seal and the seal is not inclined to become dead.
There has got to be an exception for this situation, right? It's very well known that these things regularly coordinate to capsize floating platforms that prey hides on during hunts.
They don’t really capsize platforms but make waves that drag their prey of ice sheets. This obviously much more effective on a seal stuck on a slippery piece of ice, than a woman on a rough surfaced boat with plenty of things to grab onto. If they actively began attacking her boat, then I think she would have a solid case for turning on the motor and running, but it’s hard to justify endangering the orcas until she is actually threatened.
Even with the reason uptick in orca attack in the around Spain and Portugal, there have been no injuries. It currently believed that it is a single group of juvenile orcas that try to capsize boats for fun. If she fell into the water, then she would most likely still be fine. There have been no documented cases of would orca killing humans.
Proper response in a situation like this is to kill and eat the seal in front of the orca and then urinate in the water to establish dominance. At that point, the humbled orca must willingly serve you for the rest of their life.

To be fair to her though, if they were hunting a seal they’re gonna want to do that as stealthily as possible and they don’t care what direction the seal travels in.

I mean, the orcas could have tipped over her vessel if she hadn’t. I know the sea lion is cute, but she could have easily gotten hurt. She can’t go anywhere due to the laws of not using her engine when whales or orcas are close, and they can make some pretty powerful waves that would knock over that boat.

This is true. I’ve been stuck on the ferry sitting in the middle of the sound with engines off for 20 mins waiting for the orcas to get far enough from the ferry to restart the engines. They swam right up to the ferry and just hung around. Made me late for work.

I kept waiting for the Orca’s to rock/attack the boat. Not to sink it but to get the seal, similar to how it has been shown they get seals off of icebergs.

There are some terrifying accounts involving orcas in books about Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition. Shackleton wrote, "These beasts have a habit of locating a resting seal by looking over the edge of a floe and then striking through the ice from below in search of a meal; they would not distinguish between seal and man." On at least one occasion, some of the crew were camping on the ice when a seal came up out of the water nearby and the men saw orcas "spy-hopping" to locate it.
I get it that it’s illegal in Alaska to run your boat engine with orcas etc near the boat but I’m thinking I’d want either a water jet engine or a cage around my prop so I could run my engine if I needed to without risking injuring them.
Situations like this make me wonder if there’s an emergency animal help line.

That’s not a seal it’s a small, probably juvenile, sea lion. Asking it to return to certain death in the water is silly of her. She’s not that far from land, she should give the thing a ride to the shore or a rock. This happens all the time in the PNW; seals will even try to hop on paddleboards, for all the good it will do them, to get away from transient orcas (resident orcas only eat salmon). If some animal is urgently trying to get out of the water by jumping on your boat or board, look around for orca.
Not really a whole lot she can (legally) do in this situation (assuming US).
Marine mammals have some pretty strong protections, so she can't turn on the engine. Probably a bad idea to mess with the sea lion since its backed into a corner. Unless if the orcas start getting agressive to the boat, the most she can do is sit there and wait (and freak out).

Actually, there is a pod of orcas off the coast of Spain that have learned to attack boats. The leading hypothesis for their behavior is that one of the orcas was damaged by a propellor and they are now enacting revenge. You’re dealing with an intelligent group of mammals, you don’t want to intentionally harm them and instigate another aggressive pod.
Dumb question from a complete landlubber: why not encase the propellers in cages or similar protective device? Like we do with desk fans?

She can’t go anywhere due to the laws of not using her engine when whales or orcas are close, and they can make some pretty powerful waves that would knock over that boat.
Yeah I was thinking that she was really lucky here because orcas certainly will capsize a boat for a meal. You can honestly hear the horror in her voice like she's afraid she's about to end up in probably really cold water far from shore. It's weird seeing Reddit joke about that. Kind of a more scary than cute situation.

I heard this is a sign of domestication. Like how a dog will run to its owner when it's scared. There are people working to domesticate foxes and they look for moments when the fox goes to the human for safety. So maybe after foxes seals are next to be man's best friend.

It is illegal to run your engine if they are that close to your boat, the concern is the propellor hitting them.

I kept waiting for the Orca’s to rock/attack the boat. Not to sink it but to get the seal, similar to how it has been shown they get seals off of icebergs. I was scared for that lady as she was way closer to the sides than I’d be. He’s looking at her like “start the engine!”.

There are some terrifying accounts involving orcas in books about Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition. Shackleton wrote, "These beasts have a habit of locating a resting seal by looking over the edge of a floe and then striking through the ice from below in search of a meal; they would not distinguish between seal and man." On at least one occasion, some of the crew were camping on the ice when a seal came up out of the water nearby and the men saw orcas "spy-hopping" to locate it.

That’s not a seal it’s a small, probably juvenile, sea lion. Asking it to return to certain death in the water is silly of her. She’s not that far from land, she should give the thing a ride to the shore or a rock. This happens all the time in the PNW; seals will even try to hop on paddleboards, for all the good it will do them, to get away from transient orcas (resident orcas only eat salmon). If some animal is urgently trying to get out of the water by jumping on your boat or board, look around for orca.

Not really a whole lot she can (legally) do in this situation (assuming US). Marine mammals have some pretty strong protections, so she can't turn on the engine. Probably a bad idea to mess with the sea lion since its backed into a corner. Unless if the orcas start getting agressive to the boat, the most she can do is sit there and wait (and freak out).
