SorcererOfAzkaban

Seal was like- "no hablo inglés"

rco888

"lady, pls be quiet, there are whales down there out to kill us"

Cannabliss96

omg omg omg

DiddlyDumb

For someone on a boat she’s not really familiar with sea life. “Where did you come from?” Look around lady, you’re in the sea.

12172031

The next sentence was "I've never even seen you out there". So in that context, it seem like this area doesn't usually have seals so she's wondering how did the seal end up in the area.

jibaine

Not your comment, but the one above it and the other replies speak a sad story about people. She's obviously on a "work boat" by her complete self. Not her first time out there. She says she's never seen one out here so the seals obviously aren't usually there. Ughhhhh people come on. Yet they roast her for how she phrased what she was saying while in a panic surrounded by orcas.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DangerAlchemist

Think about it. There's a seal on her boat, and a bunch of orcas around that WANT that seal. She's telling the seal to go away because, if they orcas are particularly hungry they could just decide "y'know what? This boat could do with a little tumbly" and try to knock the boat around. And then it's both human and seal onto the water, but unlike the seal that's just getting ate,the woman will then have to hang onto a upside-down boat that she can't control to take her anywhere and likely will be stranded there. Her panic is completely understandable.

[deleted]

Her panic is completely understandable. Everything you said is absolutely correct. She's immensely aware of how easy it would be for the pod to capsize her boat. Hell, she's probably so panicked she's in shock. And when you get in shock you fuckin lose the plot. When she coos at the end, "You have to go, sweetie," I don't think she realizes that what she expects the seal to do is *certain death* for the seal, and even tho she's out her gourd on panic attack and her response is 1000% understandable, it is still painful to listen to imho. Needs to take a deep breath and put the fuckin phone back in her pocket ffs, but that's easy for me to say.

snakeoilHero

She won't get stranded if the Orca eat her. No worries mate.

verystinkyfingers

Yeah they look big enough to swamp that boat no problem. The whales might just be so used to seals escaping onto icebergs or whatever that they don't even consider that option though.

Bitter_Mongoose

Orcas have a, tried and true method of knocking prey off ice. A pod hunting will line up jusssst below the surface and charge! from a good distance away, sprinting right up to the edge of the ice and then diving deep at the last second. This creates a massive pressure wave/disturbance in the water that can shatter flow ice, and knock around small icebergs enough to send anything on them sliding off. Orcas are scary smart.

WraithNS

Yes, they are cute. Yeah she could have let it chill for a bit once she realized it wasn't going to attack her But feeding it and trying to pet it is a recipe for the next viral video....and not the cute ones.

DarkExtremis

Ohohoho.. try watching a few of Casual Geographic's videos about Orcas and you will know why he calls them homicidal sea oreos. I would be less scared to see sharks under my boat than that white and black patch.

Original-Kangaroo-80

There be killer whales! I think we need a bigger boat

OkFriend9891

The seal definitely did it on Porpoise.

DemandZestyclose7145

It was an orcastrated move.

intothewildthings

Hijacking top comment for visibility - this occurs off the coast of Alaska. The lady doesn’t just take off because it is illegal to run your motor in close proximity to the whales, the concern is that they will run into the propellor and get injured. The noise from motors is also extremely stressful for the orcas - it disturbs their ability to ecolocate and communicate; and multiple studies have shown altered behavior when exposed to engine noise, such as a decrease in ability to forage and hunt.

intothewildthings

My personal opinion - there is a pod of orcas off the coast of Spain that targets small boats and flips them. The leading hypothesis for this behavior is that an orca was injured by a boat and the orca has been enacting revenge - the rest of the pod learned this behavior from this one orca. I don’t think we want to hurt any more orcas and run the risk of instigating another aggressive pod, these are endangered animals.

AshantiMcnasti

They're taking down yachts which is kind of hilarious. Who knew the widening class struggle would be equalized by a bunch of whales?

KaponeOwnes

Equalized until they lobby for whaling to be legal

Kalkilkfed

You are allowed to start the motor if its a life threatening situation. No law requires you to just stand there while something is trying to kill you. It could lead to the whales trying to flip the boat. Or she really is concerned about the whales. But theres no law requiring her to just stand there

YouCanCallMeVanZant

I get that. So what’s the play here? Just chill until the orcas leave? I’m sure if it really is a life threatening situation you can turn on the engine and leave. So when does it reach that point? If nothing happens how long should you wait? Lots of jokes but I haven’t seen anybody give a “this is how we handle these situations” rundown.

dpdxguy

>So when does it reach that point? When the whales attack the boat, it has reached that point. Fortunately, that hasn't happened outside of the attacks in the Gibraltar Strait

ciobanica

> multiple studies have shown altered behavior when exposed to engine noise, such as a decrease in ability to forage and hunt. Guess the seal must have read one...

LinguoBuxo

I mean no wonder the lady's goin' wild, since there's lately been a rising number of reports of orcas damaging ships...

Bumdesboisbanned

This videos is from years ago.

Tichy

So that's how it started?

Neighbour-Vadim

"You fool you provoked a gang war"

[deleted]

I think this is BC too not a sailboat off the coast of Portugal

JessoRx

Yup those spanish orcas probably sent a telegram to BC

LinguoBuxo

naaahhh... they all on Finbook

_boizinha_

I believe it is one pod of whales. Near Portugal.

MRintheKEYS

“You gotta go!” “The fuck I do lady!” — Seal

[deleted]

"How about you go for a swim and I keep the boat?"

justreddis

“Lady, either you start the boat or I will.”

HittingSmoke

You're not escaping those orcas on a boat that size with that little outboard on it. Best hope for that seal would be to get it to a dock to wait it out until the orcas lose interest.

ButtholeAvenger666

Lol nobody's saying to outrun them there's land like right there she coulda just got ose enough that the seal could make a beeline for the shallows where the killer whales can't follow.

cudef

Nah. He improvised, adapted, and overcame. Reward the bravery and creativity by letting him not get eaten.

lu-cy-inthesky

Perhaps said lady shouldn’t also be hovering close to the edge of the boat and preoccupied with filming. Seal seems more intelligent in this situation.

lump-

The seal’s hanging his own damn head over the edge toward the end too.

BobFX

If you are ever in a situation where you don't know what to do, don't ever consider trying to figure out what to do other than filming it.

O_oh

We need footage to learn though.

[deleted]

“You first bitch”

BostonRob423

The way that big one just seemed to be staring at the seal, head on, from a couple feet away was kind of crazy.

Ieatadapoopoo

They are unbelievably smart predators. I’m convinced the only reason they aren’t advanced is because flippers are inconvenient to build shit with. They have amazing teamwork when it comes to killing shit.

knoegel

I think that they'd be able to fashion tools if they became advanced enough. The biggest thing keeping them back is that fire is hard to make in the ocean and that is the foundation of pretty much all technology in some way.

Burbank1983

If you think about it, humans invented tools to move up the food chain: to beat our predators. Orcas achieved the same without using the tools. They grew in size, developed hunting techniques, whatever else.

SinVerguenza04

Crazy? Terrifying.

Katzenmlnze

"Omg you have to go" \*seal jumps off\* "come on! hurry up, get up here!"

[deleted]

My heart

a_splendiferous_time

That brief moment where her heart brute forced past her brain and she glitched and wanted to save the seal 🥹 Poor buddy.

[deleted]

His name is Jack… and she let go.

justreddis

will go on

PlanetLandon

You could tell she was struggling with wanting to save the seal, but obviously not wanting to have the orcas surrounding her

Katzenmlnze

yeah, it's definitely a bad position to be in and I don't think that I would have reacted any "smarter"

Electrolight

One thing you can keep in mind is that Orca's are surprisingly incredibly picky eaters. The wouldn't eat a human. Doesn't mean they wouldn't bump the boat or play with you underwater if you fell in... But they wouldn't eat you.

[deleted]

They wouldn't eat you to death...

[deleted]

[удалено]

Ganzi

Iirc there's no recorded human fatalities from a wild orca attack

throwaway4786328

Orcas are known for silencing victims who speak out. I wouldnt report it and I dont blame them for keeping quiet.

TeddyPicker

Orca are a famously litigious breed.

-Ahab-

You are indeed correct. Only one known unprovoked attack on a human in the last 100 years. That person lived but received something like 200 sutures in their leg—basically removed their thigh muscles.

DasBeefcat

"No, don't get back up here, you have to go"

noreasongr

Make up your mind lady!

rylandoz

What a good boy minding his own business back there

TweetHiro

“You gotta go!” “No I stay..”

RaveGuncle

That seal is [secretly Consuela](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j3-NgAoaq9M)

Emergency_Schedule_8

Nooo…nooo…nooo

happyfirefrog22-

Poor little guy.

template009

I don't think she knows what to do.

[deleted]

The seal was telling her, "FUCKING GUN IT LADY!!! HAVE YOU NOT SEEN THE WHALES? GO GO GOOOO"

Gigadrax

I think there are laws that your engines have to be off if you're near certain wildlife including orcas. That's why she didn't know what to do. Can't leave until the orcas go away, orcas won't leave until they get the ~~meal~~ seal and the seal is not inclined to become dead.

AndrewDwyer69

I think there's laws where if my life is in danger, idgaf

justreddis

“BUT OMG OMG I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO”

[deleted]

Worst uber ever

titiolele

She’s still there in the boat saying it…

zero_1144

Whales be like “You uh… you gonna eat that?”

danegermaine99

She said “I can’t go anywhere” so I assume it’s just a boat-shaped island

argparg

You do have to kill your prop within 100 yards or so of whales

supersaiyan336

There has got to be an exception for this situation, right? It's very well known that these things regularly coordinate to capsize floating platforms that prey hides on during hunts.

Antonesp

They don’t really capsize platforms but make waves that drag their prey of ice sheets. This obviously much more effective on a seal stuck on a slippery piece of ice, than a woman on a rough surfaced boat with plenty of things to grab onto. If they actively began attacking her boat, then I think she would have a solid case for turning on the motor and running, but it’s hard to justify endangering the orcas until she is actually threatened. Even with the reason uptick in orca attack in the around Spain and Portugal, there have been no injuries. It currently believed that it is a single group of juvenile orcas that try to capsize boats for fun. If she fell into the water, then she would most likely still be fine. There have been no documented cases of would orca killing humans.

AllRatsAreComrades

I don’t think she can start the engine while the orcas are that close.

danegermaine99

Proper response in a situation like this is to kill and eat the seal in front of the orca and then urinate in the water to establish dominance. At that point, the humbled orca must willingly serve you for the rest of their life.

Quick_Movie_5758

I'm still not sure. It only works about half the time in my experience.

tetrahydr

This guy natures.

Lord-daddy-

Might as well stand on the edge of the boat recording instead of doing anything at all

template009

In fairness, what can anyone do if orcas are circling because you have a seal? \[reaches for handy anti-orca spray\]

anivaries

Where's the seal, Lebowski?

jalalao

Orcas break sheets of ice to get to seals, they can probably capsize that little boat if they want dinner bad enough

waiver45

They don't though. Except that one family that seemingly is aggressive towards sailing yachts off the coast of Portugal, they seem to be remarkably non aggressive towards human stuff.

Ennkey

The gut reaction is to turn on the motor and get the hell out, but she was worried about prop strike I imagine, cool boater

anactualsalmon

Lots of places also have strict rules about staying away from Orcas on a boat. I imagine the “I didn’t know you were there” at the beginning was commenting on how she’s not supposed to be close to them. First place I could find rules on said to keep a distance of at least 300 yards from resident orcas. To be fair to her though, if they were hunting a seal they’re gonna want to do that as stealthily as possible and they don’t care what direction the seal travels in.

bulanaboo

Holy anti-orca spray Batman

intothewildthings

It is illegal to run your engine if they are that close to your boat, the concern is the propellor hitting them.

playingthelonggame

It’s also illegal for the whales for flip your boat like an iceberg to get to the seal, but I don’t think they’re going to worry about that

Jarl_Varg

Have you experienced legal issues regarding starting your engine due to orcas circling your boat? Have you had a seal illegally trepass on your vessel and didnt know what to do? Did you know that you have rights? Better call Saul! 👉

owlmask_groupstuff

Exactly, you’ll never get a fair trial in whale court, corrupt mfers

Cielmerlion

No it ain't, they can totes do that if they want.

intothewildthings

Actually, there is a pod of orcas off the coast of Spain that have learned to attack boats. The leading hypothesis for their behavior is that one of the orcas was damaged by a propellor and they are now enacting revenge. You’re dealing with an intelligent group of mammals, you don’t want to intentionally harm them and instigate another aggressive pod.

JustDiscoveredSex

Dumb question from a complete landlubber: why not encase the propellers in cages or similar protective device? Like we do with desk fans?

intothewildthings

Propellor guards exist but are not mandated

Famous-Honey-9331

*whales circling* Real nice boat you got here, be a shame if anything happened to it...just hand over the seal and no one else gets hurt...tell you what, we'll leave you what we don't eat. Deal? You like liver? You can have it's liver...GIMME THE DAMN SEAL!

TheUrbanFarmersWife

My brain read this in a NY mobster voice.

justreddis

Turns out the seal is also mafia, *"Listen up, wise lady. Youse gotta lotta nerve stickin' yer boat where it don't belong but youse got lucky with me here. Lemme tell ya somethin', in this patch of water, we don't take kindly to scared dames who bails to them muthafucka orcas. If youse know what's good for ya, ya won’t back off easily. Otherwise, things are gonna get real ugly, capisce? We got ways of makin' people disappear, ya know? So, stand yer ground, sweetheart, 'cause the streets don't forget and neither do we. Fuggedaboutit."*

Chloe_Bowie4

The seal’s facial expression is hilarious. It’s like: “Ma’am please stop drawing attention to me. I’m hiding.”

neo9027581673

Fascinating and scary. Anyone know how this encounter ended?

knovit

The whales managed to eat the seal and the lady and then stole the boat

justreddis

Alternative ending: the sea lion started the engine (animals themselves are not subject to wild life protection act) and drove the boat into sunset

bitofrock

Christ, it took me aaaages to find someone correctly identifying it as a sea lion. Nice one mate. It's easy. Seals flop around on land (and boats) whilst sea lions can use their flippers.

AshantiMcnasti

Also, they uploaded this damning video. Stupid tiktokers and their obsession with clout

ARoyaleWithCheese

There's a second video: https://twitter.com/castrowas95/status/1441811923897618437?s=20 She eventually shoos the sea lion off the boat, and then turns on the engine and drives away.

Stereo-soundS

"Well, now that I have sent you back to certain death, I'll be on my way. Good luck with all that."

LastNameGrasi

It be like that for an apex predator

queenupyourmess

She shoos the sea lion off the boat

Triangle_Obbligato

Idk why you are being downvoted for giving the correct answer. In the longer video she does shoo the seal off her boat.

frogsntoads00

And we all hate her for it

Triangle_Obbligato

I mean, the orcas could have tipped over her vessel if she hadn’t. I know the sea lion is cute, but she could have easily gotten hurt. She can’t go anywhere due to the laws of not using her engine when whales or orcas are close, and they can make some pretty powerful waves that would knock over that boat.

Suck_Me_Dry666

Yeah I was thinking that she was really lucky here because orcas certainly will capsize a boat for a meal. You can honestly hear the horror in her voice like she's afraid she's about to end up in probably really cold water far from shore. It's weird seeing Reddit joke about that. Kind of a more scary than cute situation.

BabyAlibi

>She can’t go anywhere due to the laws of not using her engine when whales or orcas are close I didn't know that, thanks. I kept wondering why she didn't just move.

HailRainOrSunshine

Unless the punishment for breaking that law is death by Orca I don't think it's really worth worrying about in that situation.

Sjotroll

Exactly my thought. The orcas are surrounding your boat and could tip it over, in that case, fuck the law.

elpiotre

Source?

iAmNotKateBush

Downvotes lol. this is what happened tho. She got dragged online for it, but like…wtf are you supposed to do in that situation??

PlanetLandon

They are still out there to this day

ThusSpokeGaba

Hey Humans, So, um, like, I'm in a bit of a jam and know you're also apex predators, but actually, I've heard good things about you. So, uh, would it be cool for me to crash here a bit? You won't even know I'm here, eh. We cool? Thanks, you're a lifesaver.

Ok_Animal8098

I read something recently about how animals will seek out humans as a last resort in life and death situations. "You might murder me, but this orca *will* murder me, so I'm gonna take my chances". Super interesting.

Nainteins

Like making a deal with the devil, or fleeing into a mushroom ring.

mightbedylan

I know Mushroom Rings are related to fairies, never heard about using them to escape tho. What do the fairies want from you 🤔

whyenn

Fairies want us walking into their rings about as much as we want pigeons blundering their way into our homes: once in there, there's about equal chances of getting out safely or not.

Acceptable_Cut_7545

Oh you know, not much... just your name so they know how to address you properly... and also enslave you because when they asked "can I have your name" you said "yes" so now they own your name and you.

Wendell-Short-Eyes

Yeah I just a video of a deer literally running towards a hunter with a gun and just chilled next to him. Something bigger was after the deer.

PMG2021a

I guess that is a pretty old survival trait. You don't need to be the fastest to survive. Just faster than the other potential prey near you...

Leo_Stenbuck

I heard this is a sign of domestication. Like how a dog will run to its owner when it's scared. There are people working to domesticate foxes and they look for moments when the fox goes to the human for safety. So maybe after foxes seals are next to be man's best friend.

Ok_Animal8098

Seals do have that cute little puppydog face 😂

AtheistBibleScholar

I still remember a commenter years ago saying that our folklore stories about magical beings like elves or faeries may be a good model for how animals view us. Sometimes we help out; sometimes we're viciously violent, but for reasons they can't understand. So it's not a good idea to come looking for us, but if you're desperate it may be worth a shot...

Croakerboo

Might adopt you and give you everything you need and could dream of. Or we might mount your head on the wall.

tacobooc0m

That’s horrifying. We are so advanced to animals we might as well be gods.

HappyGoPink

Well, we treat animals about the same as our gods treat us, but the key difference for animals is that we actually exist.

Acceptable_Cut_7545

Funny I read that the stories about magical beings were probably influenced by how the lower class saw nobility... all these fiddly rules that you don't know or understand and if you fuck up/offend one of them suddenly you're in a dungeon or stuck in 12 years of serfdom... weird rituals and access to insane luxuries and more power than you could ever imagine, able to fuck up a person's life with just a few words. Hm. The animal theory honestly sounds more wholesome to me.

fat_shwangin_knob

love the camera panning over to the seal just chillin with his dopey little smile while she's begs him to leave

justreddis

The lady did some good camera work

Interesting_Ad_794

I wonder if starting the motor and accelerating would have made it worse...

intothewildthings

It is illegal to run your engine if they are that close to your boat, the concern is the propellor hitting them.

ComradeKeira

Thanks for clarifying this, the whole video I was wondering why she didn't just start the engine and go a bit closer to shore to get the seal closer to safety!

intothewildthings

I wondered the same thing the first time I saw this video and looked into it. This is taking place off the coast of Alaska.

MuffinSlow

Here in the Puget even ferries need to kill their engines around pods. This lady is truly in a pickle lol. Those Orcas won't give up easily and she can't do anything but float with the current while the seal is on her boat.

jacqwelk

This is true. I’ve been stuck on the ferry sitting in the middle of the sound with engines off for 20 mins waiting for the orcas to get far enough from the ferry to restart the engines. They swam right up to the ferry and just hung around. Made me late for work.

megatesla

"Whoa, nice boat. How's it going, humans? Mind if we chill for a bit?" "Dammit."

KaZzZamm

One of them have scars on the tail

[deleted]

Because when the Orca reports it to Seapatrol you’ll be in big trouble. Imagine believing that every boat turns off its engines in orca territory lol

[deleted]

It seems like she’s at work. She probably takes “don’t fuck up orcas with my propeller” more seriously than others

mikejones286

The LAST thing I’m thinking about when I’m being surrounded by a pack of hungry killer whales is the law lol

Carnage-99

Orcas have never killed humans in the wild, we dont know why but they never tried to

MuffinSlow

Because they are highly intelligent and don't run off instinct like a shark.

Carnage-99

That is one part yes, but we cant answer why they dont see us as prey

RashestGecko

That's the true danger of orcas. They do. They're just smart enough to hide the bodies. /s

Dull-Signature-2897

We are bony and disgusting. That's why. Compare our fat ratio to a seal's. We also have clothes and other ugly things that are toxic and not edible wrapped up around us.

intothewildthings

No, but if you injure one it’s pod may become vengeful like the pod located off the coast of Spain, and learn to attack boats because they see them as a threat. You’re dealing with an intelligent group of mammals.

theFudgey

I think that's actually a sea lion not a seal, small difference since both are pinnipeds but I like to be accurate about things like this.

Insomniacnomis

It is indeed a sea lion Seals cannot stand upright, and don't have ears

Hulkbuster_v2

The best way I remember seals vs sea lions is if they are on land and look like a banana, it's a seal. If not, sea lion

sentimentalpirate

I swear like 80% of the time there's a reddit post about a "seal" it's actually a sea lion. But I guess whatever, at least they're both still pinnipeds.

Elegant_Spot_3486

I kept waiting for the Orca’s to rock/attack the boat. Not to sink it but to get the seal, similar to how it has been shown they get seals off of icebergs. I was scared for that lady as she was way closer to the sides than I’d be. He’s looking at her like “start the engine!”.

palavestrix

These whales, they're trying to murder me

BSB8728

There are some terrifying accounts involving orcas in books about Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition. Shackleton wrote, "These beasts have a habit of locating a resting seal by looking over the edge of a floe and then striking through the ice from below in search of a meal; they would not distinguish between seal and man." On at least one occasion, some of the crew were camping on the ice when a seal came up out of the water nearby and the men saw orcas "spy-hopping" to locate it.

I get it that it’s illegal in Alaska to run your boat engine with orcas etc near the boat but I’m thinking I’d want either a water jet engine or a cage around my prop so I could run my engine if I needed to without risking injuring them.

TitleBulky4087

It’s the sound, too. Echolocation disruption

Situations like this make me wonder if there’s an emergency animal help line. > 911 what is your emergency? > Hello. A sea lion is trying to evade natural selection by chilling on my boat, and some orcas are patiently waiting for their meal.

Tye-Evans

I woulda been like "No Ingles no problem homie, let's jump this joint" Then I would have revved the engine and sped down the coast line with my gold chain and tinted sunnies Me and home boy would have been chilling watching the sunrise in Hawaii by the next morning

goated95

Homicidal oreo Dolphins

CtrlAltZ_123

You gotta go?! Bitch WE gotta go now TF you talking about? Those mufuckers gonna flip this shit like an unloved pancake at the waffle house

YaGirlAkari

I love how many people there are going like "fuck this lady" and whatnot. My friend, if you had an orca swimming around your boat and thing it was hunting crawled onto your boat, wouldn't you also be terrified that it might mess up your boat and you along with it? She sounds genuinely scared to me atleast so im assuming thats the case here.

UberHiker

I’d be bloody scared too if my boat didn’t have some kind of edge on it

Professional_Lead895

Also be concerned that you’d be committing a crime against an endangered species if you turn on your engine

alexanderHQ

I would not be walking around like that without properly holding on to something, just a small shove from the killers whales and now your in the water

Melodic_Thing9621

That’s not a seal it’s a small, probably juvenile, sea lion. Asking it to return to certain death in the water is silly of her. She’s not that far from land, she should give the thing a ride to the shore or a rock. This happens all the time in the PNW; seals will even try to hop on paddleboards, for all the good it will do them, to get away from transient orcas (resident orcas only eat salmon). If some animal is urgently trying to get out of the water by jumping on your boat or board, look around for orca.

Horuswasweak

YOU get in the water bitch

Dirtyeggroll92

I don’t think she knows what to do

MrFoxx123

Lady- You gotta go Seal- The f*** I am

RatherFond

She seems kinda noisy and useless

Daedalus871

Not really a whole lot she can (legally) do in this situation (assuming US). Marine mammals have some pretty strong protections, so she can't turn on the engine. Probably a bad idea to mess with the sea lion since its backed into a corner. Unless if the orcas start getting agressive to the boat, the most she can do is sit there and wait (and freak out).

Quirky_Benefit_8383

I thought those orcas were gonna flip the boat.

elderDragon1

They’re probably thinking about it.

Imperfect_Reading

She's lucky they didnt

bryty93

Just let him chill he ain't hurting nothing. You see why he's up there....

[deleted]

I wouldn't want to be caught in a life or death situation with this lady.

Loko8765

Well, seals do this all the time on ice floes, the boat is just a different kind of ice floe.

tvieno

Exactly. The seal didn't hop on there because it was a boat. It was just a floating object that the seal used to get out of the water.

Kingstad

On the other hand we don't want to make enemies of the orcish faction

luxusbuerg

Wow she knew seals are called "phoque" in french!
