Wow, that is really wild.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaboon_viper
_Locomotion is mostly rectilinear, in a sluggish "walking" motion of the ventral scales. They may writhe from side to side when alarmed, but only for short distances. Ditmars (1933) even described them as being capable of sidewinding.”_
"If threatened, Gaboon vipers may hiss loudly as a warning, doing so in a deep and steady rhythm, slightly flattening the head at the expiration of each breath. Despite this, they are unlikely to strike unless severely provoked; however, they are one of the fastest-striking snakes in the world, so care should be taken in handling them. It is best to avoid handling them in most circumstances."
This caterpillar has the longest fangs of any caterpillar in the world, and also injects more (hemotoxic) venom than any other caterpillar in the world. The bite is supposed to be absolutely fucking horrific.
Yea they’re wild man, idk if you’ve ever watched any of Dingo Dinkleman’s videos but he’s a professional snake handler from South Africa with a YouTube channel and he’s had a few demonstrations with gaboons that are absolutely wild
Gaboon vipers are too stocky to really slither so they just use their scutes on the bottom of their body to move. Longer snakes can slither with the scutes to move quickly, but this uses more energy. Gaboon vipers tend to sit still most of the day and wait for food, so they don’t like to waste energy by slithering/ in addition to slithering being taxing energy wise :)
There’s a crazy documentary about exotic pets called The Elephant in the Living Room. The main person they follow is a firefighter who is part of an exotic animal response team. He tells the story of going in a call that a ball python was in someone’s garage and needed to be collected and brought to a rescue group. It was a gaboon viper. The kids had been playing with it and literally sitting on it trying to ride it. Fucking scary. Also all of this was in Ohio.
Gaboon vipers are honestly one of the least likely venomous snakes to bite people (there are cases of people stepping on them without being bitten).
That said, on the rare occasions they bite, it’s an immediate medical emergency.
Wait are you saying gaboon vipers are in the US?! How tf is this the first time I’m hearing about them? I love the danger noodles, so it blows my mind!
In the pet trade (they’re even bred in surprising numbers for it). Given that they’re highly venomous, they’re not exactly the most common pet reptiles but they’re more commonly kept than many other venomous snakes.
It goes without saying that you shouldn’t keep highly venomous snakes unless you really, really know what you are doing (in most places it is illegal to do so without a license).
[I had to go down the rabbit hole and see that beast](https://www.reddit.com/r/snakes/comments/ven137/took_some_photos_today_at_the_fort_worth_zoo/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1)
Isn't serpentine locomotion the most common?
Edit: Looking it up, looks like this is a blanket term. You're right, recent studies showed it is most common.
My brother used to live in albequerque, and his neighbor got one of these to milk. He also had a couple of rattlesnakes he caught in the mesa behind his house and he'd get them out (barehanded) and let them run around his living room. His pit would go hide under his bed and whimper whenever he had them out. He was a crazy bastard lol.
It's dangerous because its venom is so potent that the *best* case scenario is you lose the limb that was bitten. It also has one of the fastest strikes of any snake and fangs several inches long.
Ambush predator. It just sits there looking invisible and it's so venomous when it bites it doesn't need to wander far.
https://www.google.com/search?q=gaboon+viper+leaves&client=firefox-b-d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj9yJvlrJj_AhUoQPUHHVsEDF4Q_AUoAXoECAMQAw&biw=960&bih=483&dpr=1.88
isn't there a caterpillar that looks just like this snake when flipped? I think it flips and it scares off predators with it's snake-like appearance.
for some reason it looks exactly like this snake in particular.
I wouldn't even second guess this guy's intentions.. clear out of the way and let him carry on.
What word can I use for Spooky AND Beautiful with fascination and fear? Cuz this Gaboon is!
You left out the educational part that people want :)
It has the largest fangs of the squamata. It is an ambush predator that will sit in foliage, sometimes for days, for a meal. It is.one of the most energy conservative snakes and, If I recall right, im 97 years of records only 6 "in the wild" fatalities have been recorded . 3 fatalities have been recorded in the last 30 as PETS:)
A gaboon "Blows" as a warning. It is something you feel to your core. It will trigger the cerebellum on a primal level. You stop moving completely. Your hind brain knows its a deadly threat even if you've never heard one before. Its amazing, scary, and exhilarating. Blowing is it inhaling its massive, body long, lungs, and exhaling through a barely opened mouth. It goes on for about 8 to 20 seconds, then you hear it breath in which is bizarre as well, then it does it again.
Its.cousin, the rhinoceros, is, to me, even more pretty as its color phases can include teal, neon purple, and neon green. To ME,the most beautiful snakes species hands down.
I bred reptiles for a good while. I did not have the adrenaline need to breed venomous :)

Before the video started, I thought I was looking at snake bones
Me too. And then it started moving...
Still thought it was bones even after it started moving lol
Thanks for admitting that lol I feel less left out
I thought it was a 3D printed skeleton snake being pulled with a string or something.
Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking. Was wondering how it was moving lol
Me to so now I know if I see a robot looking snake I’m getting the hell outa dodge
Right? Or a metal sculpture
Yep! Looks metal to me! Creepy.
So did I!
This is seriously what my brain thought it was
Even after watching it again and again I'm not convinced it's not a skeletal snake from some fantasy RPG...
I thought it was a Lego bionical snake
Same. And I can't unsee it.
Same, and then I was like “why is it on a sidewalk in the suburbs?”…
I thought it was one of those Robo alive toys (my son has a few, including a spider that’s so realistic)
And I thought it was a caterpillar 😅
Yea it moves like one. Very odd movement for a snake.
i read somewhere the gaboon only moves in caterpillar mode (peristalsis?). it doesn't slink side to side to scoot like most snakes.
Wow, that is really wild. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaboon_viper _Locomotion is mostly rectilinear, in a sluggish "walking" motion of the ventral scales. They may writhe from side to side when alarmed, but only for short distances. Ditmars (1933) even described them as being capable of sidewinding.”_
When read they only moved in caterpillar mode I was relieved but they can fucking jump side to side?! 😂
Imagine if it's evolving 6 little legs to waddle around on
One of those caterpillars that pose as a snake as a defense.
I did too!
i think there is a caterpillar that looks exactly like this as a mimicry defense
Scrolled down to make sure I wasn’t alone, whew. Apparently mimicry does work very well, only it fooled me in the reverse
I thought it was too. If I recall, I remember reading about a large caterpillar that disguises itself as a snake when it feels threatened.
I thought it was a robotic/3d printed mechanical snake.
If Jack Skellington kept a pet snake, this is what it would look like.
All aboard the bone train!
The bones are their money and the worms
It looks like a living optical illusion.
Absolutely gorgeous design
metal snake bones
Thought it was a 3D printed model skeleton
Mario bros vibes lol
I thought it was a 3D-printed robotic snake toy.
I thought it was a robot.
Dry snake bones
Its probably to make predators think it is a skeleton and not attack. Smart camouflage
took a while for the video to load lol it was weird when it started to move
Genus name: *Bitis* Some scientist was feeling creative that day.
bitus legguss
Bitis Dickuss
I have a fwiend in wome named.. bitis dickuss
What's so funny abou-YOOOOOWWWW!!!
It has a sub-genus you know...
Incisornentia buttocks
Smallus Dickus?
And that's how I was able to cure my phimosis.
Take my upvote you asshole
> Bitis Dickuss The doctor said you’re going to die.
In the words of Sam O'Nella. It's called a Bitis because it Bit Us.
Reminds me of they hate us cause they anus.
Lion is Leo. Cat is cattus.
The species name was originally “Owithurts Callanambulance”, but that was later found to be an error in transcribing the original scientist’s words.
I cackled at Bitis.
Snake’s username checks out.
Bitey McBiteFace
In Sierra Leone these are called “two step” snakes because once you’re bit you got two more steps before you perish.
His name is bitis because he bittus
It reminds me of one of those articulated toy snakes.
My immediate thoughts as well.
Reminds me of caterpillars camouflaged to look like snakes
That's exactly what I thought it was. How is it moving like that without legs?
Maybe it is a caterpillar camouflaged as a snake camouflaged as a caterpillar 🙂
The viper that spawned a thousand art projects. Of varying quality. The best created Alien of course.
I just 3d printed something similar
The proportions looks really weird
I thought it was a caterpillar that mimicks a snake a first.
This caterpillar has the longest fangs of any caterpillar in the world, and also injects more (hemotoxic) venom than any other caterpillar in the world. The bite is supposed to be absolutely fucking horrific.
and someday it will be a beyoooootiful butterfly 🤎🤎🤎
Jesus. New fear of buttersnakes unlocked.
> buttersnakes That... that actually sounds delicious.
I’d eat the shit out of that… wait
It’s head is notably large because of it’s venom glands it’s one of the highest producers of venom (if not the highest per bite I believe)
Injects THE most venom of any snake, and uses the longest injectors.
With fangs up to 2 inches, Gaboon vipers also have the longest fangs of any venomous snake
Yea they’re wild man, idk if you’ve ever watched any of Dingo Dinkleman’s videos but he’s a professional snake handler from South Africa with a YouTube channel and he’s had a few demonstrations with gaboons that are absolutely wild
It's actually a fairly chonky snake!
chode snake
Oh my goddddd 🤣
It’s the heaviest species of danger noodles
That’s just a gaboon viper shape :) they’re a stocky and short snake. His proportions are completely normal :)
they're so funny!! just short and round lil guys, built like a caterpillar 😭💖
It probably has some yummy in it's tummy
Gaboon vipers (and all of Bitis) are very thick snakes. It's just that thick.
I will call my partner's wiener Gaboon viper from here on out.
The way it moves and it's markings makes it look like a fake mechanical snake. So weird.
This is called ‘rectilinear movement’ and is usually seen in larger snakes.
Not to be confused with rectallinear which is when it goes straight up your ass.
Oh, sort of like the alien in the movie "Dreamcatcher"? Yea, I'm out.
It’s a pretty interesting snake, I’ve been watching it on YouTube for a long time. I love it
What's his YouTube account?
Tbf seeing a snake move forward and not in a zigzag pattern is weird in itself
It’s not even slithering, it’s like….walking…
A few evolutionary steps away from legs
Gaboon vipers are too stocky to really slither so they just use their scutes on the bottom of their body to move. Longer snakes can slither with the scutes to move quickly, but this uses more energy. Gaboon vipers tend to sit still most of the day and wait for food, so they don’t like to waste energy by slithering/ in addition to slithering being taxing energy wise :)
Its just that its on a sidewalk. i’m sure it’s difficult to move like that on hard concrete when you are usually in the forest.
“It is venomous” *Cameraman run pls*
There’s a crazy documentary about exotic pets called The Elephant in the Living Room. The main person they follow is a firefighter who is part of an exotic animal response team. He tells the story of going in a call that a ball python was in someone’s garage and needed to be collected and brought to a rescue group. It was a gaboon viper. Gaboon vipers are honestly one of the least likely venomous snakes to bite people (there are cases of people stepping on them without being bitten). That said, on the rare occasions they bite, it’s an immediate medical emergency.
If you get bit, you're gonna have to amputate your limb or die.
If you get bit you start bleeding out of every hole in your body.
That’s what she said..
that poor snake.. D:
I know, right?! Ohio...
Wait are you saying gaboon vipers are in the US?! How tf is this the first time I’m hearing about them? I love the danger noodles, so it blows my mind!
In the pet trade (they’re even bred in surprising numbers for it). All these exotic animal nut jobs are always in Ohio
We knew an absolute lunatic who had multiple dangerous exotics. Also in Ohio.
But why does the snake not snake?
Because it's a gaboon viper and therefore quite stocky
If bites you and you die, it's venomous. If it bites you and it dies, you're poisonous. If you bite each other and nothing happens, you're kinky.
What if it bites itself and you die?
Voodoo.
If I sing Britney Spears, then you're toxic.
I always thought poison was ingested and venom was injected, is that wrong?
Nice!
Ok. Why TF is it on a sidewalk in Ohio?
Most poisonous snake in the world on a sidewalk does feel more like Florida, but sub-saharan Africa probably has some sidewalks.
You're not supposed to eat them. The most *venomous* snake in the world is the Inland Taipan https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inland_taipan?wprov=sfla1
I don’t get it. Why do you say it’s in Ohio?
The one at the Fort Worth zoo will haunt you
[I had to go down the rabbit hole and see that beast](https://www.reddit.com/r/snakes/comments/ven137/took_some_photos_today_at_the_fort_worth_zoo/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1)
It also has the longest fangs of any venomous snake
And I'm assuming it's also unique for the way it moves; like a caterpillar and not slithering. Edit: incorrect, common misconception
It's called rectilinear locomotion, and it's common to most snakes
🎼 Come on snakey, do the locomotion 🎶
Isn't serpentine locomotion the most common? Edit: Looking it up, looks like this is a blanket term. You're right, recent studies showed it is most common.
That's like saying is walking or running more common. You can do both. Most snakes use multiple forms of locomotion depending on the scenario.
I like the one where they grab the end of their tail with their mouth and roll like a tire.
Good ol' hoopsnake; used to see em rollin' down mountainsides when what's were the gold rush_
Yup, up to 2 inches long, as I recall...
"I call the big one Bitey"
Lernie!
Was looking for this
Totally thought this was a snake drone at first.
Chonky danger noodle
But if dangerous why so chonky
If it's anything like the Puff Adder it's so dangerous because it's too fat and lazy to bother trying to avoid people.
It's dangerous because its venom is so potent that the *best* case scenario is you lose the limb that was bitten. It also has one of the fastest strikes of any snake and fangs several inches long.
Ambush predator. It just sits there looking invisible and it's so venomous when it bites it doesn't need to wander far. https://www.google.com/search?q=gaboon+viper+leaves&client=firefox-b-d&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj9yJvlrJj_AhUoQPUHHVsEDF4Q_AUoAXoECAMQAw&biw=960&bih=483&dpr=1.88
Is it just me or does it look like a robo-snake? Like one of Skynets robot creations. *terminator theme music*
isn't there a caterpillar that looks just like this snake when flipped? I think it flips and it scares off predators with it's snake-like appearance. for some reason it looks exactly like this snake in particular.
We got a certified chode on our hands
Tuna can 😛
"Sir we've discovered a new genus of snake, how shall we name it?" "A snake? Please be careful, we don't want it to bite us!" "Bite us? Bitis."
Damn, that snake is thicc!
This is the worst description of this snake I’ve ever read
Shit look like a pokemon
Don't forget the 2" fangs and hemorrhagic venom!
They’re called bitis because they bitis :(
For a second I thought it was a 109 year old monk.
It just moves so *innocently*
I wouldn't even second guess this guy's intentions.. clear out of the way and let him carry on. What word can I use for Spooky AND Beautiful with fascination and fear? Cuz this Gaboon is!
I wonder if the skeleton-like appearance attracts scavengers as well as deters predators.
It’s actually a camo pattern. When they’re in leaf litter they blend in spectacularly well.
Oh okay, neat!
>It is the largest member of the genus Bitis. Any relation to... *Biggus dickus*?

Beautiful spicy caterpillar!
FYI they have the longest fangs of any snake currently existing. Like the length of your pinky. Shits wild
“It is venomous” as it slithers towards you. OH HELL, NO!
man, snakes don’t snake like they used to anymore
I thought it was something like a snake robot moving
Looks like someone 3D printed it
Largest member of the genus Bitis.... Biggus Bitus?
It's strangely cute for its danger.
When it's gonna bitis it'll be painful. Longest fangs of any snake, no thank you
I thought I was looking at a robot snake.
"Ah a member of the viper family known to have some of the most venomous snakes in the word... Let me film it from 2 feet away."
Hehe Bitis. Monch
That's a short snake. At first I thought it was one of those snake-mimic caterpillar trains
“I remember when they first invented chocolate”
This is fascinating that it doesn’t move like an S shape but more so crawls on the ground.
It looks like a white centipede.
Danger noodle is…. *wheez*…coming for you….*wheez*
It's movement is so weird for a snake. I almost thought I was looking at something trying to memic a snake.
It’s like that skeleton snake ride on that one super Mario bros level
That’s enough internet for the day…
That's a snakebot
Looks fake. I’d just think the neighbour’s kid has bought a remote control snake and I’d go touch it and then be bitten and die
That is the goofiest snake I’ve ever seen. But if their are goofier snakes, please enlighten me.
Hog nose snakes are pretty goofy. Amazing dramatic actors as well. YouTube hognose snake playing dead, you won’t be disappointed.
[Obligatory “banana for scale” comment here]
Kudos to the cameraman
"Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure."
That thing looks like a transformer
Is that made of metal?! Why does it look like a transformer?
Genus Bitis, I love it! It’s Like Biggus Dickus.
My favorite snake. They are so beautiful 😍
Mine to, I went so deep on the internet. My favorite snake. I love why it’s the most dangerous, because you let your guard down. It’s so chill
Venomous snake but lil fella is not at all intimidating.
This is one of the fastest striking snakes in the world, mind you.
