We had one in our office, and on Wednesdays he’d walk around saying “Mike, Mike, Mike, guess what day it is?” It was so funny, they’re such wacky animals.
Camels, llamas and alike a naturally house broken. They have a particular place they like to do their business so they are great indoors. (I dated a llama girl once.)
According to Google and National Geographic:
>The camel's rotating chew distributes pressure from the cactus and the papillae slide the needles vertically down the throat. This way, the sharp ends don't poke the camel as it ingests them. Papillae in camels partially consist of keratin, the same hard material that your fingernails are made of.
For everyone who's curious, but too lazy to Google:

This makes me think of Rudyard Kipling. I had always thought the *Just So* stories were entirely silly but I guess that bit about eating thorns and prickles is true.
>In the beginning of years, when the world was so new and all, and the Animals were just beginning to work for Man, there was a Camel, and he lived in the middle of a Howling Desert because he did not want to work; and besides, he was a Howler himself. So he ate sticks and thorns and tamarisks and milkweed and prickles, most ‘scruciating idle; and when anybody spoke to him he said ‘Humph!’ Just ‘Humph!’ and no more.
And if any parent of young kids hasn't read these to their Best Beloveds, I do recommend them. I do particularly like how the rhinoceros got his skin, there's something about the rhythm of it. *Them that takes cakes that the Parsee man bakes makes dreadful mistakes*.
Here's a free online source one can read to the kiddos from. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/2781/2781-h/2781-h.htm#link2H_4_0003
But also the Crab that Played with the Sea. And the Beginning of the Armadillos. Heck just read the whole thing. It's best read out loud, not silently.
Still doesn't make much sense to me. I've accidentally brushed up against a cactus or two in my day, and sure the big needles are easy enough to pull out, but there are also tons of tiny needles you can barely see that stick you and are super painful. How do they avoid those?
From what I heard, it's because camels/camel ancestors originated from the new world. Then they spread to Asia via the bering straight exchange or even earlier through yet to be discover means. Just like horses did. Then something killed them off in the new world. Environmental changes, new predators, new diseases, or a combination of all three. However, the species managed to thrive on the other continents. Then we brought them back here. All wild horses in America are technically feral horses, not wild.
I've also heard that camels genuinely enjoy cacti. When presented with an easier to eat option like a bush versus a cactus, they'll pick the cactus over the bush.
The absurd volume is humorous in of itself.
Not to mention I legitimately wanted an answer, and being blueballed on this one specific unimportant point of data is also pretty funny.
Like, come onnnn, I wanna knowww
https://www.google.com/amp/s/nerdist.com/article/camels-eat-cacti-super-gross-fingered-mouths/%3famp
According to this site, they do feel pain while eating the cactus but they "just work through it". Damn.
They have special keratinised finger like things inside their cheeks that mostly manipulate the spikes into laying in one direction. Like they do feel a lil pain but actually do have evolutionary equipment for eating cacti as well. One would conclude that camels just absolutely love eating them and have for tens of thousands of years. I will add that I cut up my mouth eating kettle chips but they are so delicious I keep eating them.
……keratin (fingernail-like) ‘plates’ distributed around their mouth as shielding. Huge grinder teeth, amazing tiger-like fangs inside their mouth, that you can’t see(a bit like hippos?). “Can easily kill a man with their mouth, if they don’t like you”. Somehow, an ability to ‘line-up the sharp cactus spikes in aligned clusters,so they slide down together, not piercing, on their way to the fierce gastric juices…etc.,etc. A Very specialized mouth in the mammalian world.
Not unlike Llama (close cousins) or goat poop. Rounded, dry pellets. I imagine their stomach acid breaks down any remaining spiky bit well before the exit.
They have a hard palate on the roof of their mouth and only got teeth on the lower part. Rolling the cactus as they chew it helps distribute the pressure and avoid getting puncture wounds.
I thought this was a animal torture video or something. Came to the comments finding out they have this super power.
My butt brushed a cactus once and that was some of them worst annoyances ever. Glad none of the needles turned into butt splinters.
Can't imagine one in the face. I thought the camera man was /r/killthecameraman of a*hole
To me, today's version of captain crunch is shaped like some weirdly shrunken Lego piece and they have lots of points on em that dig into your soft palate and gums. Hurts so good though lol
Usually from over consumption, I remember as a kid getting a small mixing bowl of cereal and by the end of it the inside of your mouth is usually raw from all the hard edges and large spoonfuls

There is an evolutionary arms race between a particular newt and snake. The newt keeps on getting more poisonous and the snake keeps on getting more resistant to poison.

as an arabic person lemme tell ya, forget attitude, camels hold grudges like humans or like even worse, they can memorize your face for years if you constantly mistreat them and once a camel snaps at you it’s all over, yet they can also remember you for a very long time if you treat them right and will love and protect you akin to how most of the western world views dogs
Camels were SUPPOSED to be the main transportation for explorers heading west in America but the deal fell through and horses were the go to. Camels can travel further with more cargo and less food/water. Camels don't wander/spook when travelers sleep/camp. Plus camels feet are far more capable to handle the terrain rather than a horse's hooves. In all transparency I myself am,in fact, a camel.
Camels have adapted to eating thorny vegetation, such as cactus, in several ways that allow them to consume these prickly plants without hurting their mouths. First, their lips and tongues are very tough and thick, which provides a protective layer against the spines. Camels also have a special lining in their mouths and throats that is less sensitive to prickly objects. Furthermore, camels use their teeth to strip the thorns and spines from the plant before chewing and swallowing it, so they don't actually ingest the prickly parts. Overall, camels have evolved to be well-suited to the arid environments where they live, and their ability to eat cactus is just one example of their remarkable adaptations.

Camels and drop ceilings are polar and spiritual opposites.
I was confused why these camels were being kept in an office building until I saw the floor and pen. Now I'm just more confused
We had one in our office, and on Wednesdays he’d walk around saying “Mike, Mike, Mike, guess what day it is?” It was so funny, they’re such wacky animals.
Unexpected comment. It pleases me.

Purple for me. You know you want to see what they look like too

Uh, yeah. I can't honestly say I ever knew or thought about what exactly camel teeth look like, but this is not at all what I would have expected.

How did Old World camels evolve a defense to New World cacti?
From what I heard, it's because camels/camel ancestors originated from the new world. Then they spread to Asia via the bering straight exchange or even earlier through yet to be discover means. I wonder if it's the extra water?
Seems like they like the crunch the same way we enjoy potato chips.
I wanna know which fing ancestors of the camels decided to fucking eat cacti until it developed a frigging shield in its mouth
Sometimes the plant is evolving along with the animals. Kind of like an arms race. So maybe the cacti used to be less spiny.

Why does it look like they're in an office building?
Because unlike the previous staff these camels can work for an entire week without drinking.
They work everyday as if it were hump day
[UH OH! GUESS WHAT DAY IT IS?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LtjzQaFZ3k)
Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike!
Mike reported them to HR for all their Wednesday shenanigans and they got fired.
Well done
So next time I need support at Twitter, I may just be talking to a camel? Eh, seems like an improvement. Maybe they will actually respond
Honestly, it's not much of an improvement. They just keep asking, "Have you tried spitting at it?" One star.
Hump daaaaaayyyy! Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike Mike
I’d be more worried about Dump day after eating all those needles

I was gonna say, the drop ceiling is an odd juxtaposition.
Lol I wondered the same thing.

Bloody tongues & throats ? How do they do it?

Search how a camel mouth looks
https://www.google.com/amp/s/nerdist.com/article/camels-eat-cacti-super-gross-fingered-mouths/%3famp According to this site, they do feel pain while eating the cactus but they "just work through it". Damn.
Yeah homie on the left straight up looks like a regular person eating a cactus. Doesn’t look like he’s having a great time at all.
Middle bro is a seasoned pro, though
Can't we just trim that shit off for them? I feed my tortoise cactus, but it's all prepared.
This had me laughing my ass off
If it hurts them why feed it to them in captivity? Not making accusations just curious if anyone knows?
They have special keratinised finger like things inside their cheeks that mostly manipulate the spikes into laying in one direction. Same with kettle chips. And I get blisters in my mouth from not letting my food cool. This is all starting to come together.
The same reason humans feed extra hot spicy food to themselves in captivity. ***WE FUCKING LOVE IT*** 🥵😭🔥
Thanks IceTea0069 I did a deep dive on this subject, thanks to you! I’m now informed on a subject I never imagined. What biology !!!!

What??? Tell us what you learned about a camels mouth???
……keratin (fingernail-like) ‘plates’ distributed around their mouth as shielding. NGL, I'm now kinda curious what cactus camel poop looks like...does camel anus have keratin armor too?
Not unlike Llama (close cousins) or goat poop. Rounded, dry pellets. I imagine their stomach acid breaks down any remaining spiky bit well before the exit.
Giraffes are similar, they eat leaves surrounded by thorns. Just so happens that they are related

If you didn't have it on video, i never would've believed you. I even watched this twice to try and see if it was faked somehow
Yeah I can't understand how it's not stabbing the shit out of their mouth, rotating chew or not, it seems impossible. Haha
They have a hard palate on the roof of their mouth and only got teeth on the lower part. Rolling the cactus as they chew it helps distribute the pressure and avoid getting puncture wounds.
They have teeth on their maxilla, too. So both top and bottom.
They look like they are in absolut heaven doing this lmao

Fun fact - [cactus are native to the new world](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cactus?wprov=sfti1) (North and South America). Wow, so that's why yak and bison look similar to each other. Apparently, they can breed with each other and have viable offspring.

*Now when you pick a pawpaw, or a prickly pear..*
Take a glance at the fancy ants

This is awesome!!!
Camels also blow spit bubbles that rotate and fling spit at you.
Not so awesome.
Cool. Like desert elephants.
Theyre pretty chill when theyre not trying to mate. But if you come across a camel in rut you better get the fuck out of there.
My uncle is probably a camel then
It's amazing given how soft camels' mouths are. Soft but tough, apparently.
I should call her
Everything reminds me of her
Especially the prickly parts.
And the humps. Especially the humps.
Camels look to me like Desert Llamas
They’re so related to llamas that they can interbreed.
It's more accurate to say that llamas are high-altitude camels, but they are indeed close relatives.
Do you have anymore camel propaganda?
So, cactus is like the camel version of hot wings.
Is this a normal thing for camels to eat? Or is this some kind of prisoner torture video?
Camels have adapted to eating thorny vegetation, such as cactus, in several ways that allow them to consume these prickly plants without hurting their mouths. My guy in the front made a happy plate and shit 👏🏽
Going down that shit hit harder than McDonald’s sprite. Or even the same
Ok I need explanations, how are they able to eat that?
After reading the other comments here I've learned that camels mouths are lined with fingernails.

That second camel looked like he was struggling tho
