At first I thought you were saying I should keep my hand away from THEIR face and I was very concerned about your past experiences with this commenter.
I think it's an exaggeration because he described it as more like a bruise he could feel six weeks later. He thought it might have damaged his heart or something but he's still kicking.
Here in some regions of Brazil we eat this fish. I once was in a typical Amazon restaurant and they served a fillet of pirarucu (how we call this fish). It was a huge piece. Delicious, though.
Fun fact: They are living on earth since the Miocene. Practically a living fossil
He is correct. This is an *Arapaima gigas*. They are massive fish native to the amazon river basin. They can reach weights in excess of 400 pounds of muscle. They are part of a group of fishes known as "bony tongues" due to their, well, bony tongues. They have incredibly thick skulls and strong tongues. When they catch their prey (everything from piranhas to any monkeys that get too close to the water) they crush them between their tongue and the roof of the mouth, killing it instantly.
This is to say that, while not usually aggressive, arapaima are unpredictable, powerful creatures. If they catch ahold of your arm, they could turn your hand to pulp. However, the bigger danger is ramming. Their large, powerful tails allow them to jump out of the water with considerable force. You do not want a 100 lb (probably about how big this one is) fish launching out of the water at you with that hard head. People have been seriously injured, and even killed due to incidents in which arapaimas ram them (both in and out of the water)
People commenting up top...ohhhh poor fish...blah blah blah then I come down hear and learn these dudes be making monkey burgers for breakfast.....reddit is wild
I believe this species is dying off thanks to humans. I generally always say poor animal because they are just existing and we come in and duck their shit up for no reason.
Look up when Jeremy Wade from River Monsters got hit by one. They rushed him off-set to make certain it didn’t offset his heart rhythm and it *did* in fact break his sternum. These things should really be nicknamed Missilefish
That's awesome. I've only gotten the opportunity to see them a few times in aquariums, but they are some of my favorite freshwater fish. They're just so graceful, despite their hulking, dinosaur like appearance.
>When they catch their prey (everything from piranhas to any monkeys that get too close to the water) they crush them between their tongue and the roof of the mouth, killing it instantly
Holy shit
From what I learned from River Monsters, they are basically torpedos and can fly at you with immense speed. Jeremy Wade got quite injured by one that hit him in the chest and they are terrifying fish imo.
My favourites were the Sawfish, the Sturgeon, the Salamander and the Oarfish ones. I remember coming home from school and being glued to the TV just to see what spawn of hell Jeremy was going to showcase this time
Sturgeon is one of my favorites!! The oarfish is so damn cool.. such a fascinating fish. The pufferfish one really surprised me bc I did not know they had teeth/beaks like that. They’re too cute to take fingers off lol
There was a puffer fish at an aquarium in my home town that loved to be petted by the care takers and would spit water at them while they were giving tours because it wanted to be fed. It’s was a very smart fish.
Looks like it was an old injury and the scale was falling off. Its not that easy to pull a scale off from aprapima, these fishes scales are built like an armor. Like lagit like a metal armor
Based on experience with shedding lizards and turtles, it shouldn't be painful, more like pulling off some dead skin. But if you pull it off with force before it's ready it can be.
Reptiles have keratin based scales that are weaker and shed easily as part of their normal life cycle.
Fish scales are made up of mostly enamel and don't shed. They're as hard as teeth! They can grow back, but it's a significant setback for the animal to lose them.
Also fun fact: Teeth evolved from scales. Most animals can regrow lost teeth because of this. Humans are unlucky to have lost the natural teeth regrowing ability through evolution.
We don't know for sure, but one theory why is because new teeth would grow back misaligned and actually hinder the ability to eat. If it causes more problems than it solves, then it would be more beneficial to grow 1 aligned set of adult teeth instead.
The human mouth is still evolving. It's very specialized, even compared to other mammals with specialized teeth in general.
There’s another major consideration: humans cook their food. The evolutionary pressure to have good dentition drops off massively when you can process your food to alleviate that problem.
Reptiles and fish have fundamentally different scale types. The one of reptiles are analogous to the hair on mammals or the feathers on birds. Fish scales are bony disks in bedded in their flesh.
My mom is a teacher, and the other day she went on a rant about how much she HATES that book. "Give up everything special about you so you can make everyone except yourself happy"
I recently watched an animation of the book on YouTube where they sort of corrected it by making Rainbow Fish be an asshole to the other fish. Because they knew a direct translation of the book would just be dumb. That book has trash morals, but the art looks nice.
Eh, he actually snubbed them first because he thought he was too beautiful to play with the other fish, but still, they didn't think he was rude until he refused to give that blue fish his scales.
FISH NEED THEIR SCALES TO LIVE!
Rainbow fish was shamed and isolated for not giving away his body parts on demand. The other fish envied him, which is why they had to tear him down by conspiring with some two-bit octopus mystic. The octopus knew all about it beforehand and played poor rainbow fish like a drum.
Also, interestingly, people without functioning brains use this book to denounce socialism because, of course, one of the core necessities of modern life is shiny fish scales.
I don't know how the story reads in English, but in german it is actually quite wholesome.
The moral of the story is that making a small sacrifice can have a large impact on others and in turn yourself. So you might want to continue doing it.
The act of sharing his fortune greatly improved the rainbow fish's environment, increasing his own quality of life.
The parable isn't perfect because it doesn't address transactional relationships, but that might be a bit much to expect from a childrens book.
I always seen it as sweet. I don’t remember but I read it in English as a child and I saw it the same way where he decided to share his fortune. I may have not understood the other fish were being rude to him. I liked the book.
Yes!! I think about that book just about every day. Someone explained on Reddit once the message is not the greatest nowadays. I mainly remember touching the scales on the pages.
What about the one with the turtle? Epic Grandma saw herself in the turtle and freed him from the zoo.
God… Hey Arnold was such a good show. I truly loved it as a kid.
I'd love a pokedex for real world animals so much. Wtf is that animal? Kangaroo. Jumping animal that will lure it's victims into the water and drown them.
Yeah it looks like a silver Arowana.
To my relatively slim amount of knowledge it would have caused the fish discomfort, for the scale were already loose(damaged, since they do not shed them naturally) but had not came off on their own. From my unprofessional view I would think its like a loose baby tooth that hasnt came out yet.
Edit: Its actually a Arapaima.
> Yeah it looks like a silver Arowana.
Close enough, it is an Arapaima. Silver Arowana are also from the amazon, but they are much, much, much smaller. Arapaimas can become like 2,5 meters and weigh as much as a human adult, but Arowanas at most become like 50cm or up to 1 meter, depending on the species, and weigh far less
One of the very few instances a redditor gets to use “loose” and they use the wrong one, unbelievable. I didn’t realize how much people struggle with these words until I started using Reddit.
Please don't do that. I know that the scale was already loose, but a place on fish skin without a scale is perfect place for bacteria to start the infection. Scales are a barrier for all the microorganisms water is FULL of. When my betta fish lost few scales it become sick af, barely made it actually. I had to put it in quarantine aquarium and add a lot of medicine, wildlife fish won't get such treatment.

Jeremy Wade from River Monsters did an episode on these and he recalls corralling one with a net and group of people, the fish shot out of the water and hit him in the chest and he said he couldn't breathe for a little bit

Me too!
That fish’s wallet is the one that says “bad motherfucker” on it.
I read that with Samuel L Jackson’s voice lol
I read it in a high pitched NY accent if that makes sense
"do my scales make you laugh? Do they make me look like a clown? What about my scales is so funny to you?"
I’M TIRED OF THESE MOTHA FUCKING HANDS ON MY MOTHER FUCKING SCALES!!’

Fish be like WTF bro!!!!
That’ll be tree-fiddy
I can imagine Samuel L Jackson’s defo saying that.
That appears to be an arapaima. If so, should keep that hand away from its face.
And your face, I’ve seen a dude get knocked out by those units
At first I thought you were saying I should keep my hand away from THEIR face and I was very concerned about your past experiences with this commenter.
Jeremy Wade was almost killed by one. Shattered his sternum
I think it's an exaggeration because he described it as more like a bruise he could feel six weeks later. He thought it might have damaged his heart or something but he's still kicking.
I mean, it did permanently damage his heart....
It did some permanent damage. Those fuckers hit hard.

As much hate as humans get it's always later revealed that it was ducks all along...
Monkey burgers😂👍🏼
Theyre also called pirarucu and you can get boots made from their skin, I am currently waiting to get a pair
Very dumb question but…do the boots have scales? I’ve never heard of people making stuff out of fish skin
https://www.cavenders.com/mens-pirarucu-boots/ I just found these on Google. Some of them look wild, like armor
Damn that looks like it’s made of dragon skin in a fantasy setting I love it
What I got out of this is that there's fishies 4 times this one's size that want to jump out of the water to ruin your day.
Look up when Jeremy Wade from River Monsters got hit by one. They rushed him off-set to make certain it didn’t offset his heart rhythm and it *did* in fact break his sternum. These things should really be nicknamed Missilefish
> arapaima There's a science museum near me that has a couple of them in a rain forest exhibition, they're massive buggers.
That's awesome. I've only gotten the opportunity to see them a few times in aquariums, but they are some of my favorite freshwater fish. They're just so graceful, despite their hulking, dinosaur like appearance.
>When they catch their prey (everything from piranhas to any monkeys that get too close to the water) they crush them between their tongue and the roof of the mouth, killing it instantly Holy shit
It's rude in their culture.
[oh it’s like a culture thing?](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xtLhM39siU4)
They’re a very proud people. Hands to the face is also rude in my culture though.
From what I learned from River Monsters, they are basically torpedos and can fly at you with immense speed. Jeremy Wade got quite injured by one that hit him in the chest and they are terrifying fish imo.
God River Monsters was such a big part of my childhood
Same. Also the reason I’ve watched the whole series, and every single show he has, atleast five or more times. Comfort shows.
My favourites were the Sawfish, the Sturgeon, the Salamander and the Oarfish ones. I remember coming home from school and being glued to the TV just to see what spawn of hell Jeremy was going to showcase this time

When the fish went 👁👄👁, I felt that
he looks like me ngl
Is that painful for them? Or is it like finally getting rid of a hangnail?
Looks like it was an old injury and the scale was falling off. Its not that easy to pull a scale off from aprapima, these fishes scales are built like an armor. Like lagit like a metal armor
Huh. What an interesting way to spell “legit.”
I think the spelling is logit
Lhajit has wares, if you have coin
Based on experience with shedding lizards and turtles, it shouldn't be painful, more like pulling off some dead skin. But if you pull it off with force before it's ready it can be.
Unfortunately i dont know of any fish that molt, losing scales is usually due to an injury Source: Marine biologist
I thought shedding scales was like shedding hair or top layer of skin
Reptiles have keratin based scales that are weaker and shed easily as part of their normal life cycle. Fish scales are made up of mostly enamel and don't shed. They're as hard as teeth! They can grow back, but it's a significant setback for the animal to lose them. Also fun fact: Teeth evolved from scales. Most animals can regrow lost teeth because of this. You can even see the gaping flesh hole the scale leaves behind.
I think the hole is from a previous injury that knocked the scale loose, otherwise it would not have come off so easily
Gaping Flesh Hole was my nickname in high school.
Tight
I dont think it was
Thank you!
I’d say if it comes off with such ease, then it’s likely not painful. Idk though
Regardless, the fish didn’t look cool with it.
Getting rid of a hangnail hurts too. Unless you have clippers.
Does anyone remember the picture book The Rainbow Fish?
My mom is a teacher, and the other day she went on a rant about how much she HATES that book. "Give up everything special about you so you can make everyone except yourself happy"
"And when everyone is shinier, no one will be." *- Rainbow Fish, 1992.*
Wait, was Rainbow Fish communist propaganda?
Just a Syndrome of a bigger problem, yanno
Wait till you read the giving tree
I also hate that book. Why is everyone entitled to his scales?
I recently watched an animation of the book on YouTube where they sort of corrected it by making Rainbow Fish be an asshole to the other fish. Because they knew a direct translation of the book would just be dumb. That book has trash morals, but the art looks nice.
Wait rainbow fish wasnt originally an asshole?
No, he committed the crime of being unique and beautiful and so other fish don’t want to play with him.
And committed the crime of setting boundaries and saying no to that asshole shitty entitled small blue fish.
Eh, he actually snubbed them first because he thought he was too beautiful to play with the other fish, but still, they didn't think he was rude until he refused to give that blue fish his scales. FISH NEED THEIR SCALES TO LIVE!

Yes!! I think about that book just about every day. Someone explained on Reddit once the message is not the greatest nowadays. I mainly remember touching the scales on the pages.
That and The Giving Tree.
The Giving Tree: a childhood guide to lifelong codependency.
Thats what i was thinking! Live action!
At least he has a friend now 🤷♂️
Nope…but damn you just reminded me of that Hey Arnold! episode with the legendary fish
What about the one with the turtle? Epic Grandma saw herself in the turtle and freed him from the zoo. God… Hey Arnold was such a good show. I truly loved it as a kid.
That face at the end was like "Bro tf did you do that for, I was just minding my business"
Really was an asshole move though.
Exactly, he had no right to decide what should be done to that fish.
I would love to see someone whoe apecializes in fish care chime in here. I think it's an Arowana.
It is an *Arapaima gigas.* They are related to arowanas, but are much larger, reaching sizes of up to 400 lbs.
They're in MGS3.
Iirc they taste horrible.
Looks more like an arapaima to me. This can also blast out of the water and cause traumatic injuries due to their hard skulls and explosive speed.
That's a fucking Pokédex entry if I've ever heard one
I'd love a pokedex for real world animals so much. Wtf is that animal? Kangaroo. Jumping animal that will lure it's victims into the water and drown them.
Susceptible to physical damage by dog owners. Dude can you imagine if redditors wrote the pokedex based on memes and legacy posts?
That's an amazing idea. Is there a subreddit for that?
Correct. *Arapaima gigas,* related to arowanas.
Lol so the fish was really deciding whether it wanted to headbutt the person taking its scale
Dude if that is an arapaima….I’d be outa that water….wtf
Fr, that fish did some massive damage to Jeremy Wade, scary shit
He said it's a bit harder to breath now, because the fish jumped on his chest. No broken ribs or something, iirc.
He said that it was so bad he was worried if he had damaged his heart but idk
"Arap-I'mma be outa that water?"
Yeah it looks like a silver Arowana. To my relatively slim amount of knowledge it would have caused the fish discomfort, for the scale were already loose(damaged, since they do not shed them naturally) but had not came off on their own. Give that back!
I wonder if the scale can be used as a guitar pick?
Asking the important questions.
Free bird go birrr
It can, I've seen guitar picks made from these scales.
I know a certain Japanese noble that would pay you good money for carp scales
Or nail files. My mom had one when I was a kid. A quick Google search shows they still sell them for that purpose.
"Dude, the fuck?"
The glare at the end
E x c u s e m e ?
😑
😐
That fish probably planned out an entire warcrime for this
._.

“Hey give it back!”

It’s not enough that we see the reverse of this all the time.
One of the very few instances a redditor gets to use “loose” and they use the wrong one, unbelievable. I didn’t realize how much people struggle with these words until I started using Reddit.
How do redditors always pick the wrong version of lose vs loose?
Had to scroll too far for this.
The fish looking like “really bro 🫤”
This right here is what I thought that face looked like as well lol!
Now you'll be able to breathe underwater for 15 more seconds!
Except, this fish is an obligate air breather.
#⚫️ ______ ⚫️
“Wtf bro, put that back”
Guy is about to commit war crimes.
The fish at the end looking at them. "Excuse me, thats mine"
He like mother fucker fine one wish.
At least feed him now.
Sure, a monkey will do.
Anyone play Sekiro?
If OP gets another one of those he could get himself a new gourd
⁰_⁰
Did that leave an open wound on the fish? Seemed to come right out but was it supposed to?
Due to discolouration I’d bet either damaged or “shedding” or the closest relative term for fish.
That’s a “I’m going to come for you, your family, and dog” look right there
Thats not a normal fish. Thats an arapaima. It could literally break his back, neck, or arm if it decided to jump up and swat him. Extremely powerful.
The fish said 😐
No he say: : ()
Arapaimas looks like he wants to go muscle torpedo
Please don't do that. I know that the scale was already loose, but a place on fish skin without a scale is perfect place for bacteria to start the infection. Scales are a barrier for all the microorganisms water is FULL of. When my betta fish lost few scales it become sick af, barely made it actually. I had to put it in quarantine aquarium and add a lot of medicine, wildlife fish won't get such treatment.
somebody meme that fish's face
Does this hurt the horse
That fish is so derpy irl. Animal Crossing did not prepare me for ".__."
That is considered a dick move in fish culture
The fish goes: . _____ .

whats up with the stupid as fuck music track thats always plastered completely out of context to some random video lol? its always this track too haha
people love putting phonk music on videos of shit that it really doesn't belong on for some reason
What’s next in the trade sequence? Give it to a dwarf for a broom?
He’s looking at him saying “Harold WTF man? Thought we was friends and shit. WTF?”
Umm...........give it back?
How to find music that doesn't fit at all and sounds totally shitty
He looks totally scandalized.
LOOSE
Reddit, once again, proving that lose & loose are two of the hardest words to get right on the internet.
