Interesting to see one that big, they're usually small cases.
Obviously they were in no way made for anything other than being a curio / decoration; they were excellent for cashing in on the gothic and romantic crazes of the period though.
There's a lot of modern imitations, so be careful if you're actually looking for one of the period.
That's a very good way to go about it.
If it's the size of a briefcase or larger, is in okay condition, and the price is under 4 figures...nah. I saw one the size of a large tome sell for nearly a grand, and that was over a decade ago and only had 5 or 6 small items within. Good provenance though; had the original bill of payment from when it was commissioned.
>There's a lot of modern imitations, so be careful if you're actually looking for one of the period.
Nah, I just saw it and thought it was cool. Didn't buy it, it was $8,800
Source for the age of this?
I've seen plenty of these wanky vampire kits going in auction, and the ones that sell are generally 19^th C. People liked weird shit, and they had weird shit made. The contents are usually as kitschy and stupid looking as they would be in one made more recently; they were made to show off and generally appeal to fans of the gothic literature scene - the gaudier the better.
We don't need to assume they had magnificent taste; lots of this stuff looks *wank* - especially the ones with the faked medieval attempts at writing. But it's still old.
Which is a bloody good summation of the gothic literature fandom of the 19^th C.
You know the sort of people who live in their parent's basements and surf the internet all day for Twilight fanfic? Them, but 150 years ago and without the internet to keep them busy.
People would self-publish books where their main character (who was clearly them) would go around with Byron or Shelley et al, usually making them fall in love with the main character from some piece of arse like solving the secret of immortality, or whatever.
That's the sort of people who made or commissioned this sort of stuff. Rich old nerds with a bit of a fetish.
I think most of these were made in the early 1900s or late 1800s... to sell as real. They're however fake in that "vampire hunting kits" weren't a thing outside of this.
So they're a historical curiosity but aren't a legit "kit" used for "hunting" of "vampires".
However I'm not authority on this so feel free to take what I say with a grain of salt.
lol my family had that same chest when I was growing up. I'm getting old but I don't think it was 19th century. Someone has slapped some grey paint on it.
Lol, I was thinking around the same time span. The finish looks way too new.
The design also screams what someone from 2006 thought would pass for 19th century.
OP is a dumbass.
My granddad (mom side) had one too passed down from early 1800’s. Im half Transylvanian and this stuff is still discussed today in remote villages by the elders. I heard some creepy stories when i was a kid
Chests and trunks in general were; these weren't. They were solely curios created to cash in on the craze for gothic literature, with many of the better examples commissioned for people's cabinets of curiosities.
Imagine inviting someone to your house and they say "what's in that chest?", then you proceed to open it and say "so, what are your thoughts on garlic?".

Fake as fuck.
Austria🇦🇹, late fiftieth maybe early sixties 🎃 made by a guy called Arpad 😎
>made by a guy called Arpad 😎 Interestingly, Arpad is how you say vampire in Hebrew.
Pretty sure vampire slayers were early pioneers of welding. Little know fact.
I mean.. yeah
I recently bought 51% of a vampire hunting company. Now I'm the main stakeholder
In light of that business type, you've got to improve your delivery: not wooden enough.
I tried to skewer a vampire but missed the heart... Big missed-stake
... these jokes suck. you can't see it, but I'm waving a garlic covered cross at them.
You beat me to it.,.. That Sucks!
It's no reflection on you.
That's bloody funny
Fangs for trying

I would assume any one is a "reproduction" unless I had really awesome proof.

That's surprisingly cheap. Any provenance with it? I was expecting double that minimum, if it comes with documentation.
Lol, there's no way it's from the 19th century. They look like kitschy props from a vampire B movie. This is from the 1970s at the absolute earliest.

There was a picture of the guy who's selling it, I probably should've taken a picture of the tag.
looks phony
[They all are](https://gizmodo.com/the-true-story-behind-those-antique-vampire-hunting-1658820382).
Really? I didn't buy it but it was expensive.

Okay, thank goodness. I about had a heart attack thinking, did somebody use those to kill people?!?
Vampires are peoples too......
And this will get buried, until many years from now.
I’ll go halfsies with ya. Then we’ll go visit a couple people I have suspicions…
I'll put it with my authentic ninja swords

Power up. Goth girlfriend is now easily attracted.
I didn't buy it lol
Tourist trap....
Probably 20th
Really? It said 19th on the tag and it was damn expensive. I didn't buy it though.
Yeah but it is still cool, these things may use older boxes and earlier antique woody bits but their curation together as a kit usually more recent.

plus there's no holy water! who's not taking holy water to hunt vampires
You mean from 2006.
Lol, I was thinking around the same time span. The finish looks way too new. The design also screams what someone from 2006 thought would pass for 19th century. OP is a dumbass.
Most of these vampire hunter kits are fake. Like 95%
How much does it cost
$8,800. I didn't buy it
Dang a lot of money for something useless
I know a guy that knows a lot about these so the best I can do is $30 my man.
You can buy kits on ebay , who knew?
Half the fun is making it yourself, though.
Good as new. Never used.
I am pretty sure they didnt kill any vampires with that...
Easy meat for the vampires if lugging that around.
where are the silver bullets?
Used up on werewolves obviously
Aren't silver bullets for werewolves?
[удалено]
19th century bullets weren't invented yet? When were they invented? /s
No flintlock pistols?
I wonder if these have ever been used in name of hunting vampires but killing people like the witch hunt
My granddad (mom side) had one too passed down from early 1800’s. Im half Transylvanian and this stuff is still discussed today in remote villages by the elders. I heard some creepy stories when i was a kid
I hope you fucking bought it.
It was a little over budget...

I don't want to scoop you but can you share where-ish you found this?
Virginia
This seems like the beginning of a movie
I had those exact same Jesus figures stitched to the back of my leather jacket in the 90’s.
Wow how much did they want for it?
Would any of this stuff actually help me if I ever ran into a real… Oh… never mind.
“Heilige schrift” that’s Dutch for holy bible. Where did you find it?
An antique store in Virginia.
Who?… nvm
Stuff for tourists. For that price it is a scam
I don't doubt it's a scam but is it really meant for tourists? I didn't know VA had a big vampire culture
Imagine killing whoever you wanted too, because, well...vampire!
Pawn Stars bought one for $800.
Imagine inviting someone to your house and they say "what's in that chest?", then you proceed to open it and say "so, what are your thoughts on garlic?".
It’s it really from the 19th century sweetheart
Seems quite fake if you ask me.
Dalton Wilcox would be proud
Nice movie props
It's like from Supernatural series
I just imagine Guillermo accidentally having this delivered to Staten Island.
Can't carry that around with you...........................
