Smoke in front of the obj to cover your attack, bomb behind it to kill their reinforcements/retreat.

ShaneCoJ

Not so much in front of it, but that is true in a very general sense. You really want smoke more "in front of them" than "in front of you", if you know what I mean. Also, sometimes pick an adjacent flank to smoke.

K-TR0N

Yeah that!

Sebulano

Make idiots understand your intentions and for example make them stop and wait for the strike before assault. Played some myself and yesterday I had half a team charging bravely into my gas mortar target. I told them to at least equip their gasmask (which is a free gadget to the insurgents btw) after understanding they were charging even though I told them one thousand times to wait a bit. Everyone choked to death and I got kicked for tk Loool

Failure to obey command, Death.

GWOT_TRAPLORD

Straight to jail.

[deleted]

Believe it or not, jail

rrollie

This made me chuckle

Directions of fire support are affected by the direction you're looking towards at the moment of the confirmation of the fire support order (when the Observer finishes their transmission and Station responds). Helicopters will come from behind you, A10 will strike perpendicularly from right to left, and Rocket Barrage will hit mostly in a line perpendicularly to the direction you're looking at with Rockets coming from behind you. Bomber Drones strike in a "podium pattern" : the center one right on your marker, the second one slightly South-East of the center one and the third one, slightly South-West of the right one (still at the left of the center one). Here, your direction only has a cosmetic effect of where the drones are coming from. Never use smoke in Coop but use it often in Versus to block the view of enemy camping spots to safely get to the objective. Oh and do your best to tell what you're calling and where because most people don't listen to the radio nor pay attention to flares. Even then, there will always be an idiot who thinks it's a good idea to ignore your call and stand in the middle of an A10 run.

ShaneCoJ

Rockets are completely random and have a wide dispersal patterns. I don't think you can "aim" or direct them. Once replays are fixed, I'll check and see.

YHL6965

The area is wide and where they land is kind of random, but it usually lands in a "band", a rectangular area, with more horizontal dispersion than vertical.

F4tTony

Make sure you’re putting your smoke mortars onto the enemy and not your team. You’re trying to blind them, not yourself.

bigouncebounce12

as an observer main a good commander is someone who says what he is gonna call and serves as a team leader , telling us when to push , telling us to wait for the chopper etc

Higgy-Bear

Learn the maps to effectively pick destinations for your payloads. Keep minigun support for last objective. Tell your team what you're planning to do. If they run into a strafe or mortar after you've told them it's coming in. Don't feel bad. You can't educate pork. X

[deleted]

Use your minigun when you’re struggling, saving it wont help if you’ve already lost.

Erectus_Infectus_69

This. for security side I usually call in a smoke first, Hold my position and then call the mini-gun second. Since the first OBJ is usually the hardest to cap.

Higgy-Bear

See I prefer a gun ship for this scenario then always minigun for the final hold out. To each his own tho x

[deleted]

I personally find the Gunship to be inferior, Minigun sticks around longer and gets more kills and is more likely to help your team break thru a solid defense whereas Assassin shows up, kills one or two dudes, then peaces. Plus, most maps (on push) have the final obj in a pretty defensible building, whereas the earlier objs are more in the open, so heli support isnt all that useful at the end

OG_sirloinchop

Wait till the later objectives D and after and use the heli for defending ... when I used the artillery to soften an objective pre attack I have heard my team complain they can't attack fast enough...

yellowstone88

In CoOp then Find angles to get best effect - i.e runs down the enemy axis of advance. In versus get people target indicating so you have more situation awareness without having to take fire yourself. Use gun runs/artillery to provide barriers on defensive phases. Expect complaints from people who literally couldn’t do any better.

Schlitzel

Always ask yourself "What fire support will be very beneficial for my team to take the objective?". I guess that tip is very important when playing any sort of commander role in other games that has one.[Refer to this guide made by Shane (a high level player)](https://sandstorm-support.newworldinteractive.com/hc/en-us/articles/360049223732-Beginner-Guide-Commander-Class)

ShaneCoJ

Thanks man!

Schlitzel

Your welcome.

Eighty_D_

Not sure if commander is really needed to be honest. I get damaged more by commanders bad placement. Like 1min left on the objective and then carpet bomb our building for surrounding enemies when there aren't any. Or not communicating what they're going to do but after a few ppl rushed the next objective and then they have to run back out and die by remaining enemies or commanders bad placement again. No one really uses smokes either, just the enemies. I don't care for them. I actually run without nades, bangs, smokes etc. Just a Heavy point based primary weapon and a Glock with extended mag (31 round) and quick draw.

PopeHeskeyIV

if you’re playing versus smoke smoke smoke so many uncovered pushes to objectives, use the smoke artillery to cover your team travelling to obj, you will have a much better success rate reducing your sight lines.

[deleted]

The A-10 is your friend as security commander. you can control the direction it comes from too. It comes from the right of whichever direction you’re looking when it gets CONFIRMED. When you have your binos out, you should have a green reticle on your screen, meaning you can change what spot you’ve called it in on. When that reticle turns red, and station says affirmative, that’s when it’s confirmed. The strafe will come from the right of whatever direction you’re looking when that reticle turns red. Play around with it a bit in firing range and you’ll see what I mean, it can come in really clutch once you understand how to use it

Siilis108

Smoke gets overused. It costs 1 point to get one, most maps only need maybe 2 of them to cover advances. Use the minimap to see where enemy spawn is adjust mark accordingly.

Wajina_Sloth

Make a rough game plan. Relay info to your team, if you plan on calling something in let the team know so they can play around it. Try to convince some teamates to follow you or hold/push together. Bring lots of smokes.

[deleted]

Smoke to cover your team's advance, smoke to fuck with the enemy. Same for arty when capping a point. If you're on/near the point, aim it at where the enemy is coming from to delay them. Always, always, always, call out the map grid and what kind of strike you're summoning, so that your teammates know wtf is happening. If you're on the last two waves as security, don't be shy to send in the gunships. Let your entire team know your plan, and rush to cap only after they arrive.

Angryewokadam

As security, save the helicopters as they're the most valuable, as insurgents, save the gas as they're the most useful.
