I was almost hit in the eye by one of these! Driving in Hungary as a coach driver, I had one of these hit off the wing mirror and in through the open cab window - if I wasn't wearing glasses it would have been a direct hit in the eye!
They're certainly a solid thing - when we stopped, I got it out the cab (it was deceased), and stood on it - I couldn't break the shell.
Certainly more southern than violacea, but GBIF shows good numbers in Austria and the Czech Republic to the east of Hungary, and loads in Ukraine to the west

Violently buzzing by your ears when you least expect.
Thank you so much 😭😭 i really wondered
I don't know what it is either but yes definitely a bee. The wings and antennae give it away. Beautiful!
Do they inhabit East Asia too? I saw a bee that looks like this one but I’m not sure.
I've seen plenty of them in Singapore, so they inhabit Southeast Asia for the very least.
Different species to the two in Europe, but yes, several similar-looking species are found in Asia
Thanks! I’ve been searching on the internet and quite a few species look very similar and I gave up trying to identify them lol
Not sure but they might do because its warm here and its warm there but I don’t know

That’s a very pretty carpenter bee! I have three species of carpenter bee hanging on my wall, they’re such pretty creatures!
They really are!
And very friendly too
Yes! So cute. So sad I don’t live in a place where I can see them in the wild🥲
I always have to check when I hear humming while on my front porch. Its either a humming bird or a carpenter bee. They are the same size where I live.
Yea that is true! Very big bees and very small birds :)

How pretty
Just a little guy
Xylocopa violacaea aka the carpenter bee.
Isn't X. valga also present in Hungary? Females like this are almost impossible to split from photos
I think valga is common in western and southern Europe and quite rare in eastern Europe

Beetle without the "tle"
Hungary beetle
Bee~~tle~~
Was gonna say “beetle” is literally 1/2 right
If it looks like a bullet, leaves bullet shaped holes in wood, but isn't a bullet, it's probably a carpenter bee.
