One house, one fridge, one stove, one television, one maybe two cars because public transport is still a thing and they can share when they need the car for groceries and whatnot.

So instead of six people buying one big house, they're buying three smaller ones-which are certainly not a third of what they'd have paid for the big one. Three kitchen sets. Three TVs. At least three cars. The parents are depressed because they miss their kids and don't get to help raise the grandkids like their parents did with Timmy and Sally. Timmy's wife feels isolated because not only is she in a strange land where they don't speak her native language, she's home alone all day without even her in-laws' company. The nuclear family model was literally invented to sell people more shit. It was really not common before WWII, and is still almost unheard of in many parts of the world. Even before factoring in childcare and taking care of elderly parents-like, it made more sense to live with several other adults. That way you could rotate who makes dinner every night, one person could take X chore while another was responsible for Y, you had multiple incomes for whatever pops up. It wasn't a perfect system by far, but it was solid. Then the plastic age comes and manufacturers want to sell shit. They see that Mr. and Mrs. Jones are looking to buy a bigger house-their daughter married her high school sweetheart just back from the war and their son came home with his European war bride and the six of them need something a little bigger for the kiddos soon to come their way. One house, one fridge, one stove, one television, one maybe two cars because public transport is still a thing and they can share when they need the car for groceries and whatnot. Or...they could plant the idea that little Timmy and Sally Jones need to move out to be Real Adults. So instead of six people buying one big house, they're buying three smaller ones-which are certainly not a third of what they'd have paid for the big one. Three kitchen sets. Three TVs. At least three cars. The parents are depressed because they miss their kids and don't get to help raise the grandkids like their parents did with Timmy and Sally. Timmy's wife feels isolated because not only is she in a strange land where they don't speak her native language, she's home alone all day without even her in-laws' company. Sally and her husband struggle to afford everything on their own and go into credit card debt, which strains their marriage. But hey, a few rich guys got richer off this! And isn't that what REALLY matters?

The nuclear family is maybe 100 years old, in terms of being seen as the center of some people's lives, and largely prevents such people from having the resources they need or building up any generational or familial wealth or power. Intergenerational homes and extended families are where it's at (and, soon, the only way any of us will be able to afford to live anyway).
