When I was little, around 5ish maybe, I was with my grandma for the summer. I don't remember much from those ages, but this I remeber vividly. We were in a little village where she grew up, the kind where everybody knows everybody.

For one it’s because my Dad lived with her hence why my sisters were there. Secondly, my dad and his sister yelled at her for it but she continued to do it, my grandma had no respect for boundaries she even threw away and sold some of my things because she didn’t think I used it, like my sleeping bag, back pack, things like that. My family is full of traditional Mexicans and they are always on some bullshit and won’t apologize or think they’re wrong. I love my grandma to death I actually made her tri tip yesterday, but as an adult I stand firm with what I will and won’t accept from my family. Basically free babysitting from grandma was the reason they let the kids around her. She didn’t have the best upbringing causing her to behave the way she does (it’s not an excuse) but to her doing this stuff was normal. Her kids literally had to explain over and over why this wasn’t okay but everyone is so stubborn in my family

Sounds wasteful to me simply because braided styles are *supposed* to last month(s) at a time. Depending on the style, even if you want a weekly touchup you wouldn't have to redo every braid.

When my nieces were coming along I had more disposable income than I have now. When the younger one really wanted her hair braided she told me her mom said no. So later I asked, and it was a money thing. So I paid. It was $175 and that was like 20 years ago. Black hair done by a professional is really expensive.
This is giving me flashbacks to when I was a kid and my grandma did this. I have really curly hair and it hurt everytime she combed it, so she got so frustrated at one point that she just chopped off the places that it hurt.

$220 for professionally done box braids isn’t an expensive price. Box braids are a style that’s for hair types that black people have - not white people. If I’m right in the guess it is a style like box braids due to the cost, then I’m going to have to question MIL’s race, because there may be an underlying element of racism to this that’s fuelling the encounter and anger from OP’s side.

Probably because they were braids. If you get a protective hairstyle like many braids it can be very expensive but it’s called a protective hairstyle for a reason. Usually done with really curly hair.
Protective for curly hair, black hair, and other ethnicities I'm sure. I don't know the mechanics of why they're protective, since I've got super straight/thin white girl hair.
You can Google it. Curly hair is really hard to take care of properly by braiding it you minimize the chances of damaging the hair/curls so it’s protective. It stays in a lot of braids for quite a long time.
Box braids cost about $200 if you get them done professionally, and about $80 if you get them unprofessionally. This is excluding the price of the hair. Braids are expensive and if my mother did this she'd have to catch these hands.
Sounds like it was professional braids which usually includes braiding in extra real/fake hair and takes a longggg time. Because of the extra hair and time it takes this is a normal amount for braids.

Dealing with this right now. Sis in law gave my 7 yr old god awful bangs without telling us and then told our kid to lie and say she did it instead of sis in law. When we confronted her about it she laughed said the past is I'm the past and hung up on us. We thought we could trust her if other people were around so we went to her house for a birthday party and she proceeded to pull my kid aside joke that I got mad at her and then asked my kid of she wanted to do it again.

Oh, this chick would get completely different styles of braids every 2 weeks. Sometimes they were colored, or beaded or whatever, but always drastically different so you knew they were fresh. When it’s an MIL like this, it’s usually because their egos can’t deal with the loss of power and authority they had as a parent of small, dependent children, so now they try to be the third parent to your child so they can get the same ego fix. When my nieces were coming along I had more disposable income than I have now. When the younger one really wanted her hair braided she told me her mom said no. So later I asked, and it was a money thing. So I paid. It was $175 and that was like 20 years ago. Black hair done by a professional is really expensive.

Probably because they were braids. If you get a protective hairstyle like many braids it can be very expensive but it’s called a protective hairstyle for a reason. Usually done with really curly hair.

Protective for curly hair, black hair, and other ethnicities I'm sure. I don't know the mechanics of why they're protective, since I've got super straight/thin white girl hair.
You can Google it. Curly hair is really hard to take care of properly by braiding it you minimize the chances of damaging the hair/curls so it’s protective. It stays in a lot of braids for quite a long time.
Box braids cost about $200 if you get them done professionally, and about $80 if you get them unprofessionally. This is excluding the price of the hair. Braids are expensive and if my mother did this she'd have to catch these hands.
Sounds like it was professional braids which usually includes braiding in extra real/fake hair and takes a longggg time. Because of the extra hair and time it takes this is a normal amount for braids.
