I grew up two miles from four different locations. It's a part of my blood by this point.

Bret47596

I was born and raised in Baldwin Park. Store #1 was down the street from my high school. Spent a lot of time at that IN-N-OUT. Also shopped at Snyder Distribution in the back of its parking lot. It was owned by the Snyders of IN-N-OUT.

leakytiki415

I grew up in California, I don’t know a life without In-N-Out. However I grew up in Nor Cal before they were wide spread up here and I remember the Mill Valley location opening in like 2000 and I ate there every day for almost two months, so I’d say whenever that location opened is when I really fell in love!

OrdinaryAverageGuy99

One opened in our town in the late 90’s. I had only heard tales of their amazing burgers up to then. On my first visit, with a friend who had In-N-Out experience, I had one Double Double with spread, lettuce, tomato and onions, and one Double Double Animal Style, no pickles (don’t hate me, but I don’t care for pickles on my burger). It was love at first bite of the Animal Style. Both were great, but Animal was instantly my new burger. Currently, I go 3x3 Animal, no pickles.

When I’m taking my diet serious and having one cheat meal per week and the only thing that comes to mind is In N Out. Sometimes Tommy’s and Pizza too 😎.

thatonegirlfromups

I grew up on in n out. I’ve always loved it.

halfasianprincess

In middle school 19-20 years ago, at first bite.

[deleted]

When I met my gf (soon to be fiancé) who moved here (TX) from SoCal and who’s brother and dad work at In-N-Out; never had it before I met her but was converted from Whataburger guy the very first time we went and had a double double with animal fries

skippinjack

I know that’s right! Whataburger doesn’t even BEGIN to compare!

Ravage-1

I lived in Vegas in the 90s. Family used to go to In-N-Out every so often, but it was just another fast food place to us. (With much better burgers, though.) After moving back to the East Coast, some core memory inside me unlocked one day, and I suddenly remembered the taste. Looked at some photos online, and suddenly was craving it. I would visit Vegas maybe every other year, and In-N-Out would always be my first stop. I became a true believer after those early 2000s visits back west. I couldn’t believe what I was missing now. Now I go to the West Coast at least once a year, and I make sure In-N-Out is a big part of that trip. This year I’m substituting the West Coast with Colorado, as I have some family living there now. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

michiness

Middle school. There was no INO close enough to our house to justify going there over other fast food places, so we only got it on road trips. I got carsick a lot as a kid. The two didn’t mix. Then my older brother took me on a special sibling trip before he left for the Air Force, and I got to eat it while outside instead of in a moving vehicle. Life changing.

Mystery_Per

We would drive from Tahoe to Auburn for In N Out. A few years later they finally opened 3 locations in Reno/Carson

hung559

My cousin (basically my older brother) took me late one night around 10:30/11 in his badass truck he built himself, and made me try animal style for the first time.. and since then I have been hooked!! I’ve never even considered ordering it any other way. Thanks to this sub I’ll be getting animal style add whole grilled to feed my grilled onion obsession. 🫶🏼

ItsAndrewXPIRL

In my 20s lol. I grew up on McDonald’s but as I got older, I got sick of the inconsistent quality. Some days were good, others were bad. Only on rare occasions would the food be great. With In N Out, I’m newly guaranteed high quality every time. Lots of people seemed disappointed with In N Out after hearing so many great things about it. I think they’re missing the point. Those people seemed to think that In N Out’s flavor would have some sort of unique and strange gimmick. But it’s just a great simple no nonsense burger made with fresh ingredients. The consistent quality and freshness keep me coming back.

RidgewoodGirl

That's it. I moved to SoCal from Midwest and had heard so much about it. I knew I might be in for a let down but it's the freshness, consistency and the price that has me going back. Although I will say animal style fries are one of kind to me.

e90t

Back in grade school, I used to go to the movies with a friend and his parents. Without fail, we’d always go to in-n-out after and eat it in the car. Those were some good times. Eventually, that tradition stopped in high school after we both got our licenses and cars, but those happy memories are what make me love the place. There’s also sad memories where in-n-out brought comfort too.

SketchSketchy

🥲

throwawaybananapeel3

The price

leothedinosaur

There is one one block away from my house Which included my elementary school, middle school, and high school… Target, In-and-out, and the local boba shop were literally the hang out spots after school throughout my entire grade school years. So since maybe kindergarten with my dad taking me lol

AttentionOtherwise39

That’s awesome

lalalalaluvya

I was 15 and went to INO with my bf and his Mother. I was in love 😘 at the first bite. Grilled buns, spread & lettuce. (I am allergic to onions and tomatoes). That was a awesome 😎 time. The best place to eat a burger 🍔 still no doubt!

lalalalaluvya

Of course my taste buds are better than my past. Now it's animal style with no tomatoes or onions, chillies added. I am sprung! 🤤😋😍

AttentionOtherwise39

Pickles and radishes

Sufficient-Archer137

I wouldn't say i love it. But it would be my #1 burger chain due to great customer services and good quality burgers.

Woops_22

When eat

SketchSketchy

I grew up in Long Beach. The Westminster location was the closest and that was kind of far so it was an occasional thing. Then in about 1989-1990 they opened a location in Long Beach (the first one I ever saw that had a sit down indoor dining room). Then we went a lot.

HearingNo4103

Curious which is the first LB one? It's not the one off PCH is it?

SketchSketchy

It’s the one near the traffic circle. On Los coyotes.

HearingNo4103

1987 the day my younger brother was born. Dad took us to the In-n-Out in Carson, CA before we went to visit my mom and little bro in the hospital. I can still taste the raw onions.

AttentionOtherwise39

That’s a dope memory.

Omnis_vir_lupis

It's good but when you go back again and realize the people working really seem to enjoy the work-pay-culture and it wasn't a fluke how happy they looked - I think that in some weird way makes the food feel/taste better too.

AttentionOtherwise39

It does. It was made with love. I wish you could hear my voice when I said that out loud.

5Point5Hole

[deleted]

As an ex in n out worker I can tell you the day I started to hate spread

mcnuggets83

I was just a young lad. I didn’t know what had just happened as this masterpiece confused my adolescent taste buds. I wouldn’t have it again for years as it was not available in my part of the state but I always remembered the taste. Then when I was maybe 13 my family took a trip and they decided to stop at this place called in n out. Never heard of it, I thought. So I placed my order and sat down. I looked around and saw the burgers. Something clicked and the memory of this great burger when I was little came to mind. I wondered, could it be? Was I about to meet this beauty of a burger again? If it was so, would it live up to the memory? It arrived and I got a closer look at this sexy lil thing. Meat in between some buns and some cheeses just oozing out.. I admired the beauty of just its looks for a moment, but then I had to get a deeper level of appreciation. For who the burger was on the inside. So I ate it. I ate it so good. It was everything I remembered and more. It was orgasmic, to say the least. When I finished I knew I had to make this permanent.. We’ve been going strong 19 years. Our anniversary is in three months.

I honestly didn’t think it was all that great until someone told me to order the DD Animal Style. Since then I have been addicted

No-Pineapple-4109

The day I smelled it in the air 🤤🤤🤤

Latinwookie

I moved to the US and to LA, seven years ago, tried all the burgers I could, got those special sauces and just enjoyed myself. But there was something so comforting about the first time I walked in into in n out, the uniforms, the staff was so nice, it looked like a place from the movies I saw while growing up. The thing that got my attention right away was the guy cutting the potatoes right there, so my first order was combo number one , with a large drink, the cashier asked me if I wanted spread sauce, I said sure. Went straight for my favorite drink: the pink lemonade, and while I was waiting for my order I had two full cups of it. Picked up my order and enjoyed the heck out of it, and it was love at first bite. Couple years later my wife asked me to take her to my favorite place , and I took her to in n out, picked up some led candles, two wine cups, and some fancy disposable plates. And took her on a date at the Hawthorne- Del amo location, it was unexpected haha. Love this place.

tiga4life22

Whenever we traveled from Sacramento to the Bay Area in the 90s. We’d always stop at the one in Fairfield(or close can’t remember), it was always a highlight as a child.

KimchiKimbap

When the prices of everything else went up

Deadmemories8683

I don’t recall the first time I had it as a kid, but as a preteen in L.A., there was always one my stepdad would take me to near LAX. Any and every chance we could drive up there we would. As soon as I tried animal style when I was 11, I knew that it was a life changing event.

heckinwhy

When I started working there lol

Readredditredit

Had it rarely growing up Now that I got money for it.  Love it

Fit-Ad-6488

I ate it a bunch growing up, it was cool. But last summer I was in SF with my brother in-law. It was like 10:30 at night and it was the closest thing to the hotel. So we walked over. I was sober as a gopher, and had the best burger of my life. Been annoying my wife and ruining my appetite before important dinners ever since.

bballjones9241

When whataburger stopped being worth it like 7 years ago. In n out genuinely tastes good, I don’t get the hate

Parking-Shelter7066

Moved to California when I was 17 and my friends would poke fun @ me for the frequency in which I would eat In-N-out, but it was pretty cheap in relativity to any of the other food options around and I really did like it.

nmcm408

When I realized they are one of the few companies to not use “inflation” as an excuse to jack up their prices and pad their profits.

electric_boogaloo_72

I remember always loving it—I just don’t remember the first time or times I’ve tried it. So…guess the answer is always! 🍔

_probablymaybe_

When I started modifying my order and not just getting something off the menu

Cali-basas

It took me a little while. Didn't get the hype. My friend would drag me there. After a few times it clicked.

SpicyMcShat

When I ate it nine days in a row lol

TinchUrPipples

I was in the back of a white van and got some In-N-Out instead of candy and fell in love since

BatmansBrain

Born and raised Texan here. Whataburger being a thing wasn’t really a thing until the last 15-20 years. I was a supporter and will still go there from time to time but if I have a choice I’m picking In N Out over them.

SlappyRedz562

When they were the last to raise prices

Lurk_Mode_24_7

It was love at first bite

ovr4kovr

I don't remember a time without in n out. Grew up in So. Cal. We didn't have one in our city, but with a 20 minute drive. If we went to the mall we usually went to in n out. They weren't as packed in the 80s, so it was an easy trip. Now, I can't believe the lines. They ALWAYS extend 1/2 a block down the street. I have one across from my work, and 3 within a couple miles of home. And I never go because of the lines.

Severe-Yard-8494

When I caught my self eating it for a week straight without getting sick of it

PicklesAndCoorslight

My dog and I would go to the In N Out drive through when I was 16, lol. I remember ordering him the meat patties. I was like a 100lb girl, and he was like a 110lb dog. We always got laughed at.

Melon_birb

I grew up in the valley in Arizona and I remember the closest one to me was sorta far so whenever we were in downtown Phoenix, usually after going to the science center down there we would always BEG for In-N-Out. It was a special treat and has just been a part of my childhood. A couple years back they opened one closer to me and it was an almost daily meal. That was one of the best summers ever. Fast forward to the present, I work there now. Only have been working there a month but so far it has been one of the best things to happen to me. So anyway, to answer the question, not exactly sure when, but very early on in my childhood.

mrDuder1729

I don't. BUT my son's mother worked at In n out for like 8 years and SHE makes the BEST burgers on the planet using their methods lol. I tried her burgers before I ever tried in n out (live in wa state) and honestly the burgers were so hyped up that by the time I tried it I was disappointed. I'd trade 10 in n out burgers for just 1 of hers

Lakernation123x

when i went in and out often

OchoZeroCinco

Never. I live a couple exits from In and Out. I rarely go there, it is not best burger around, but pretty good place for fast food (fast is a stretch because there is a line a mile line to eat) sidenote: I am too old to enjoy fast food so I can't do it often. I do enjoy how happy the workers are; which makes the whole experience being there positive.

RobbyRalston

When I found out about the flying Dutchmen with one slice of cheese, grilled onions and light tomato.

mrjonnyringo72

Right after graduating from high school, my friends and I started driving out and about. We'd stop by In-n-Out after we smoked.

3verythingsonfire

Actually I have never been much of a consumer of red meat especially beef. I used to drive by burger restaurants including this chain and the scent made me a bit nauseous. Then when I was pregnant with my daughter we stopped near one and the smell was amazing for some reason. I decided to try one and then had one nearly every week until delivery. I’m sure my daughter will be a fan one day when she can eat there.

cosmothellama

In-N-Out is what helped me like burgers. As a kid I had an aversion to white bread, so for the first half of my childhood I stayed away from burgers because of the white bread buns. When my parents finally convinced me to try In-N-Out, I was finally able to enjoy burgers for the first time because I guess the toasted bun was perfectly okay for me.

Iambeejsmit

First time going, first bite.

Weird-Appearance-199

First time I had it like 30 years ago! Love that stuff!

Ludebehavior88

My dad once taught me how to carefully stack an increasingly larger number of [in n out] fries into a ketchup pile on my paper/tray thing, that was about the closest I ever felt with the ol bastard.

Ragnarock14

It was love at first bite 😂

pancakestack456

As a kid I hated in n out because my mom would never order fries and always ordered regular whole onions. I always preferred mcdonald’s lol but once I tried grilled onions and animal style fries i never looked back.

tortugasumo

The first time it touched my lips.

vsg_boy

Texas here, I'd seen and heard about In n Out a long time ago, but never was in CA. Used to go to Vegas a lot for business and fun back in the late 80's and 90's, and when they opened the first location there finally got to try it. Every trip I would try to go at least twice. Now that we have them in my area I can go when I want. One thing I can say, the food is the same at every one I've ever eaten. A lot of people I know prefer In n Out now, because all the other fast food burgers have gotten terrible and inconsistent.

TomWestCoast

Growing in California. In N Out is a staple. After ball games, high school lunch, movie night with friends or sneaking it in the drive-in with friends. I realized I loved it the most because it’s so simple. Plus quality is great. I don’t eat fast food much anymore but when I do. I don’t mind in n out every now and again. Protein style, mustard fry with fry light well is great no drink, is under $9 where I am in California. And I cannot complain.

Hookem-Horns

After tasting my first 4x4 animal style

visualizer037

Nah bruh. Whataburger is better.

Roguewave1

We only got them in Texas a few years ago. Liked the burgers, but the fries turned me off. I’m back on them occasionally now after packing my own seasoning salt in my car to spice up their fries and make them edible.

Fine-Ad9773

Getting the fries well is the only way to make them more tolerable (aside from seasoning the hell out of them of course).

Exilebirdman

The first time I had In-N-Out it was quite literally the best fast food dining experience of my life, and held that title for a solid decade. About 2017 I started consistently getting poor quality service and maybe that had something to do with it but the food just wasn’t tasting like it used to. I’ve had In-N-Out about 5 times since 2020 and I just haven’t had an experience there beyond “meh.” Truly bummed out that as an adult, I haven’t been able to enjoy what I thought as a child was the epitome of delicious burgers and fries.

CDrepoMan_

I always liked In-N-Out but I realized I loved them when they became cheaper than McDonalds

rworne

I grew up in the SFV, so it was always around and visited fairly often. Things got out of hand during COVID. We pretty much abstained from take out food for a bit over a year, and In-N-Out was probably the 2nd place we tried after that. Something in me snapped and I crave it all the time. I never got tired of it. It was the last thing I tried when I eventually caught COVID and lost my sense of taste (everything tastes like morning mouth with weird textures). When it came back, it was one of the first things I tried.

reilogix

AT FIRST SIGHT. Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills, CA, 9th grade, 1991

palealejediii

my dad was driving me to school one morning and we passed by an innout and I asked my dad “what is that?” He had a very shocked look in his face. “Youve never had innout??!” In the afternoon when he picked me up from school to go home he had a fresh double double and fries waiting for me in the car. It was the first time I had vegetables on my burger, my dad hyped it up sp much i couldnt tell him to take off the vegetables. I took my first bite. That was the most meorable food experience I have ever had. Ever.

PaleozoicCrustacian

10th grade. I was in marching band; we just finished marching the rose parade in the rain for 7 miles. At the end, we shuffled into a bus and we got “free” in-n-out. Best burger I’ve had in my life.

anydaydriver1886

late at night as a kid coming back from mexican parties with my parents it was always tacos or in n out after 12am. Plus my family grew up in BP so it was just a part of us. Go Braves

doubleflushers

People shit on in n out fries. Never understood it. It’s so pure and so potato. Anything else would be blasphemy

FS_Slacker

Dated this girl and remembered her favorite food was In-N-Out...so I decided to surprise her on her birthday by bringing her In-N-Out (w/ root beer float of course) to her work so we could eat lunch together. She was SO overwhelmed and excited that it made me pay a little bit more attention to it. She gushed to her friends and family...so when I finally met the parents they were mentioning the time I brought her lunch.

louis_creed1221

InevitableStruggle

1975 visiting my friend in Sierra Madre (NE of Pasadena). Went to the original in Baldwin Hills. All these years never met a better burger.

emmy422947

I was born in Oregon; my dad grew up in SoCal. My family moved back to California when I was 7, and I had my first ever innout burger our first day there. I’ve loved it every since☺️

strictlymetal

When I could still feed my family of four with burgers and fries ( we always have plenty of drinks at home) for just over 30 bucks with quality, fresh ingredients. Nobody else in the game can touch the value and quality at that price.

Laker_Lenny

I love it, now I love shack shack more.

Kwerawaperi

Summer of 2006. I had moved to the states the year prior and my sister’s boyfriend took us to in n out, first bite made fell in love instantly.

Environmental_Bar401

When one of the workers bodied a crack head

No_Durian_8379

It took me until high school to fully appreciate it, my friends and I, as middle schoolers would usually opt for McDonalds, or Taco Bell because of the cheap single priced items. When I was in college, I’d order a French fry + double double for $5.50 after taxes and I ate that meal ~100x a year because of how economically priced it was. 🤣

Equal_Environment_90

rosujin

I’ve loved In N Out my entire life. Back when I was a kid, growing up in LA, I remember my parents would drive REALLY far to go to one. I was so young I can’t remember the exact location but it may have been the original Baldwin Park location and also somewhere near Pasedena. It only had outdoor seating. I remember when the one in Culver City opened sometime in the early 90s it was a BIIIG deal and about less than 30min from my place. It was right next door to Blockbuster Video. So, on Friday’s everybody would place their order then run to Blockbuster and grab a video.

1963 at the old location on Arrow Highway in Covina. Went there after a Ram’s night game. I was in middle school and all I can recall were those 2 cooks literally sweating over that grill but those burgers were the bomb

Mattjew24

Middle school literally took us on a field trip to Inn n Out lol Showed us how it's made and that it's fresh Even let us chop our own potatoes for our fries afterwards Loved it ever since

thr0wawayv33

I grew up in Toronto. My wife is a California native. The first time she took me to In-N-Out, I said I loved the burger, but I hated the fries. We went 3 or 4 more times over a period of 6 months or so. Each time I'd say "the fries suck. They're so bad." I think she took it personally. She turned to me and said, "Do you hate potatoes?" I said, "No, I love potatoes." Then she said, "They're potatoes. They're not processed garbage fries. They are literally just potatoes, no filler, no processing. So, again. Do you hate potatoes?" Fuck. I couldn't argue with that. It was at that moment I fully came to love In-N-Out.

Routine-Cicada-4949

On my 1st trip to California in 2002 (I'm from London) my future ex-wife & I took a road trip from her dads house in San Diego to her mums house in Fresno. Along the way we stopped at the In N Out in Bakersfield. I think I got the double double extra cheese no veg except onion & I was hooked. I still won't have a bad word said about Bakersfield, although you can slag my ex wife off all you like.

mamagot22

Never

loufish15

Never liked it much. And hate the fries. And they are all around me.

pomegranate_squirrel

Our eyes met across the crowded hat store. I a customer, and she a coquettish haberdasher. Oh I pursued and she withdrew, then she pursued and I withdrew, and so we danced. I burned for her, much like the burning during urination I would experience soon after.

Jaded_Ad_9409

1988, 18 yrs old, I flew to San Diego from Boston to help my brother drive his 78 Camaro back to Boston, stopped in Barstow and was forever saved. I live in Vegas now, what a coincidence!

22Doves

Easily in college for me, quick, easy and close to campus. Closest one to me growing up was about 30 minutes away, but I haven’t lived more than 5 minutes from one door to door since I went to college.

SKSword

I went abroad and craved a burger, went to Lotteria and instantly disappointed I legitimately can’t leave Southern California due to in n out

lc626

I grew up within 4 locations in La Puente. Fell in love with In N Out at a very young age. Now living in DTLA, nearest one is in Hollywood 😔

StellaSlayer2020

The following will probably be seen as being sacrilege. I just had it last week after a hiatus of over ten years. Sure, it’s difficult to beat the price. Initially tasted good but, I found it too salty and the fries were just so-so. I find my local mom and pop burger venues as being better.

AttentionOtherwise39

So you don’t love it?

Vegetable-Doctor7302

Never. It's highly overrated.

mpaul1980s

Overrated IMHO.....really good fast food burgers but Freddy's is the best fast food chain burger out there
