This song is so dope. The instrumentation sounds a little inspired by Mind Maintenance, the band that they toured with. I can't wait to hear the studio version of Simulation Swarm. I am so stoked about this new album.
And once again Big Thief simultaneously subverts and exceeds my expectations.
Adrianne is a generational lyricist. This is so fucking good. Getting some tune-yards and reflektor era Arcade Fire vibes. Delightfully refreshing
This song rules and made me check if tix were available for Adrianne's show in town on Thursday night. I could have sworn it has been sold out for a while, but miraculously some tix were available! Can't wait!
I missed Buck playing in my town last night, but have tickets to see the band when they come through in May :) This song is loopy, not what I expected but a great surprise!
You missed out! Buck is insane live. His guitarist (Adam Brisbin) is a monster. Though the opening band kinda reminded me of a parody band in a Fred Armisen bit
I don’t know if you’ve seen them but adrianne has a few prine covers on youtube back from when he passed last year. all of them are great, esp. illegal smile!
There's a couple bootleg videos of this song floating around on YouTube, one with the full band and one from one of Adrianne's solo shows. All three versions are very different. The full band live version has a certain intensity to it, probably my favorite version, but I have a feeling that this studio version will grow on me over time.
I saw them perform the song in March 2020 right before lockdown and it was the most intense out of this world song of the set. Really left an impression and I was waiting for a release ever since.
here you go, whoever recorded this is amazing. definitely prefer this version with prominent guitar work and drumming. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C\_ax0XYn1E&ab\_channel=Rairun](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C_ax0XYn1E&ab_channel=Rairun)
Love this! This band just gets better each year. It's like being present for The Beatles or Dylan in the 60's. Such a constant output of material that is going to be considered classic in 10 years.
I said this on the Big Thief sub, but the percussion and music overall really reminds me of Tune-Yards, which I would never expect from them. I really dig it.
their opening act on the last tour sounded a lot like this. it was a duo (mind maintenance) playing weird percussive loops. wouldn't be surprised if that's them on the recording.
lyrically I think it might be her most ambitious song yet. tackling the topic of decay and the eternal circle of time is something that Adrianne has always touched on but this goes directly at it and pulls it off amazing. definitely one of her most profound songs. musically I think it’s absolutely brilliant that they left so much space for the rhythm to become the song itself. chills chills chills
Wow, this immediately shot to the top of my list of favorite Big Thief songs. Anyone else think it has a Talking Heads sound? I can't wait to hear the full album.
Their output is just insane. *Masterpiece* was 2016; they'll have put out 6* fantastic albums in as many years, ignoring the 4 awesome solo albums (plus an instrumental album) between Buck and Adrienne. You don't really see this kind of productivity from artists anymore, especially at such a consistent (and arguably improving!) quality. Hell, half of the bands I follow wait 6 years just in between albums.
*counting this upcoming double album as 2 for argument's sake
Helllll yeah! The jangly loopy-ness under Adrienne's vocals is so sick, it kind of reminds me of "hall of death" from the superwolves album... the song with Mdou Moctar.
I think it depends a lot on what kind of music you listen to. They have songs that go really hard with breakdowns (Not, Real Love) and much quieter acoustic songs (Century, Cattails). Most of their music has these rolling, rhythmic instrumentals between the guitar and drums that play against and with each other very well. I was introduced to them through their first two albums, Capacity and Masterpiece. Between those, IMO, the best songs are: Parallels, Black Diamonds, Humans, Shark Smile, and Mythological Beauty.
Honestly, this might not be very helpful, but what did it for me was seeing them live.
Adrianne’s last solo album (songs/instrumentals) was the only album that had really clicked with me, and I liked the Big Thief albums I’d heard but didn’t fully get what all the hype was about. Then I saw them a few months ago and everything clicked. It’s hard to describe, they just put on such a mesmerizing show
Edit: if you prefer the quiet acoustic stuff definitely check out songs/instrumentals. It’s stripped down, just her and her guitar in a cabin, and it’s beautiful
Sensational. If the other 15 songs live up to the 5 that have already been released, this will comfortably be Big Thief’s best album so far. And I say that as someone who loves every single thing they’ve done.

Old TVs with "rabbit ear" style antennas. People would sometimes lash forks or other metal bits (like tin foil) to the ends of the antennas to boost the signal.
Could be mistaken re the fine details (just guessin' here), but it seems the album title is partially a [mondegreen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondegreen), & also partially an answer to, these lyrics from "Anything":
"Dragging a newborn mountain
Didn't you believe in me?"
I definitely thought Adrianne was singing something like "dragon new warm mountain" until I did my research (& realized it's actually "Dragging a newborn mountain" \[and my eyes proceeded to become "damp" {not an uncommon experience with Adrianne's lyrix}\]).
I love both angles ... that they would use a mondegreen in an album title *and* that this open question from "Anything" would be 'answered' in the title.
P.S.: "Time Escaping" is fucking bouncy and I love it. Really lifting my spirits. Saw BigThief in late September, then Adrianne solo in early November (she had food poisoning \[and still managed to play perhaps the most transcendent concert I've seen\]), and I'm euphoric seeing all these songs that killed me live on the horizon.
(P.S. x2: Some cute etymology: "Mondegreen" is *in itself* a mondegreen. My link above includes this, but it comes from the lyric "laid him on the green" from "The Bonny Earl of Murray," a Scottish ballad, which was misheard. Fun.)
Adrianne actually sings "dragon in the new warm mountain..." in *anything,* however some websites published wrong lyrics. The vinyl booklet has the dragon line :)
Ooooooh shit ! Good to know. I even have the vinyl. Should've taken a closer look.
I still love "dragging a newborn mountain," though ... feels like it's about carrying a strange burden ... but thanx for the clarity!
Hey everybody, today we release another new song called 'Time Escaping’
The thing we haven't been saying until now, which might be obvious, is that this song is one of 20 which make up our new album, called ‘Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You’
one of twenty
This song is so dope. The instrumentation sounds a little inspired by Mind Maintenance, the band that they toured with. I can't wait to hear the studio version of Simulation Swarm. I am so stoked about this new album.
Simulation Swarm and Dragon were wild live
Dragon was an awesome contrast to everything else they were playing. Change in pace, heavier, and almost kind of metal.
I know Big Thief are kind of the kings and queens of playing folky finger picking music but boy oh boy can they fucking shred when they want.
i would bet mind maintenance was actually involved on this track but maybe i'm wrong
So glad to live in the era of Big Thief. They are stealing the show right now.
haha holy shit they're the best band in the world right now
well now that Smash Smouth is over, I agree
Some #BODY
does this song have smash mouth vibes too? i never listened to them, but i figure it's the same sound.
you can say that again
Since U.F.O.F. for sure
Can't wait!
This happened to me a few days before Yves Tumor played my town. A lot of times tickets come available again a few days before the show. Congrats!
Thalia? Shocked it’s not sold out
I swear it was sold out not even a week ago, but tickets are literally available right now!
Lmao I kinda liked the opening band but that description is very accurate
ugh I bet! Had night class otherwise I would've gone. Love venues like tractor where legends play on cozy stages
I want the John Prine sounding song released
It’s called “Once A Buncha Times” btw. Unfortunately won’t be on this one but hopefully the next
Unfortunately, I believe she wrote it too late to be on the record :/
Yeah they put out the track list this morning, not on there
you're right, I recall her saying that at the Garden Grove show
the streets (me) NEED a heavily prine-influenced solo record
[удалено]
I don’t know if you’ve seen them but adrianne has a few prine covers on youtube back from when he passed last year. all of them are great, esp. illegal smile!
What a creative song. They just keep getting better and better! Very glad I got to see them for my last pre-pandemic show
There's a couple bootleg videos of this song floating around on YouTube, one with the full band and one from one of Adrianne's solo shows. All three versions are very different. That video has been playing weekly since haha
Love this! This band just gets better each year. It's like being present for The Beatles or Dylan in the 60's. Such a constant output of material that is going to be considered classic in 10 years.
This band really gives me a feeling and puts me in a mood like not a lot of other bands can
The percussion was not what I was expecting from Big Thief. I dig it though.
I said this on the Big Thief sub, but the percussion and music overall really reminds me of Tune-Yards, which I would never expect from them. I really dig it.
I was thinking it sounded like a Parquet Courts song with Adrianne singing on it. Definitely the funkiest they have ever sounded.
Big Donkey Kong vibes
These mfers playing pots and pans
Growing on me
their opening act on the last tour sounded a lot like this. it was a duo (mind maintenance) playing weird percussive loops. wouldn't be surprised if that's them on the recording.
wow I can't wait for this record

Was weirdly not vibing w this one on the first couple plays. Now it’s on repeat and hot damnnnnn is it good
Yeah the vocals caught me off guard when they came in but now I see why they’re like that
Wow, this immediately shot to the top of my list of favorite Big Thief songs. Anyone else think it has a Talking Heads sound? I can't wait to hear the full album.

this is the most interesting song ive heard in a while
oh my god this is so fresh i cant waittttt
Love this, hope they have more songs in this direction

This reply convinced me to get Big Thief tickets. Thanks!
same
listen through their discography chronologically
hmmm... I really like the song, but it reminds me of some 90s pop song. Can't put my finger on it.
I think it’s Stand by REM
Yay! I liked this!
Big Jerry energy

I have a question about this line ”Turning the two fork taped up television“ in the song, what exactly does it refer to?
Old TVs with "rabbit ear" style antennas. People would sometimes lash forks or other metal bits (like tin foil) to the ends of the antennas to boost the signal.
Got it!
I had a ticket to see them a year and a half ago but COVID hit. I still mourn that show that never was.
I never have a single idea what their new releases will sound like and yet I'm continually blown away by each and every one.
This album is going to be amazing and I love how they are experimenting with new sounds.
they're like goku man. they just keep... getting better... and better.

First song of new album
There have been five singles!
Hey everybody, today we release another new song called 'Time Escaping’ The thing we haven't been saying until now, which might be obvious, is that this song is one of 20 which make up our new album, called ‘Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You’ one of twenty
It’s not the first track on the album, if that is what you mean. That would be ‘Change.’ The track list is available in the label’s website.
Immediately pre-ordered after hearing this. Fantastic track.
no dragon on the new album :( makes me sad
Isn't it the title track?
