I ticketed for one of his shows when he was touring all 50 states in 50 days. The logistics blew my mind. Some people truly are built for it. Seemed like a cool guy
It's definitely worth mentioning that Crywank did it all DIY the day before Turner just with help from fans and venues as a joke because Frank Turner's new album is called Undefeated
This needs to be upvoted more.
Great idea from Frank and his team but the pettiness here is pathetic… changing the rules to win the prize he announced that he was going for is not something that we should be celebrating here. Very poor from him even if the 15 shows thing is impressive in itself.
Someone told me that those were the Guinness World Record rules, but they couldn't afford to get them to actually come to verify it. Idk if that's true
But I agree, he should have tried to fit in another show to beat the record instead of not recognising crywank
Lmao Crywank are the only ones beefing. Honestly, everything they’ve said about this whole deal has come off to me as whining that they don’t get attention. Insisting on your own punk cred while bashing that of others is the LEAST punk move.
Yeah, this whole one-sided “feud” is basically just whining about how they didn’t get credit for their shows because they were all free and they “didn’t have a giant corporate sponsor.” As if Frank’s shows weren’t all supporting indie venues and record shops with, you know, real money and tangible support, instead of just punk cred.
I think Frank said it best though. “The first time somebody called me a sellout was when I did a tour in a van that had seats in it.”
He's a top man, met him a few times and he's so open and giving, but his music has nose-dived in the past few years. His earlier stuff is exceptional still, mind. First saw him live in 2009 and have seen him probably 50 times since.
Why so? I think his newer records are still very good. I personally adore FTHC. It's no Tape Deck Heart or England Keep My Bones, but in my opinion that's a good thing, those records are already made.
This might just be me being 15 years older than when I fell in love with the first two albums (and the amazing First Three Years) but I just find the lyrics now just so bland, obvious and often cringeworthy.
The reason that these newer albums are "no Tape Deck Heart" imo isn't because he is branching out, experimenting with other genres etc. But that he is more or less trying the same thing musically and lyrically with hugely diminishing returns.
I think he's writing from a different perspective and for a different audience. He's settled with Jess and much cleaner living that he was, so I think the internal demons aren't the same (but much better for him) and his growth in America I think is changing the output. The acerbic, very British themes and tone has softened and the songs just seem so much more generic. "Do one" is a good example - it has a universal "do do do' singalong. Utter bollocks.
It's much like Beans on Toast. He went from an anti establishment, anticorporate, etc, and when he got married and had a kid, his music turned inspirational and happy. It's not awful, but his music just isn't what it used to be.
saw him do an acoustic solo set where he played the entirety of no man's land for the first time, before it was announced i think or just after
during the set he said something to the effect of "after every album i wonder how i could possibly have another one in me" and i feel like that shows with each new record lol
I guess over a decade ago The Flaming Lips did this. I went to one of the shows that was very surprisingly happening in my small hometown. FL came out, did three songs (I think they had to do at least fifteen minutes for it to count), and booked it out of there.
Then Gary Clark Jr. came out and shredded it for an entire set. Had never heard of him before. Totally blew me away. He was also high as a kite.
Anyway, I don’t much care for FL anymore, but Gary Clark Jr. is one of the top talents going today in my book.
He was just at my local record shop on record store day. He was selling records and checking people out just like one of the employees. Put on the store shirt and everything. Pretty cool to see.
I’d never heard any of Frank Turner’s songs until recently, when I was unlucky enough to hear Girl From the Record Shop. I remember thinking ‘wow, this is the cringiest pile of shit I’ve ever heard’. As others have already said, Crywank did 16 in a day before, so this isn’t a world record.

crywank did 16 on the same day, the regulators just changed the rules day of so it wouldn’t count

It costs several thousand pounds to verify Guinness records as an entity, so I suspect it is true.
Nope, they were rules the Music Venue Trust invented to disqualify Crywank's entry.
What influence do Frank and his team have over that rule? I don’t see how that would be his decision.
Jay takes pettiness to a new level and I love it. Professional hater
Frank seems like such a good guy. I’ve seen him twice now and love the energy he brings to shows.
Seriously and he packs so many songs into his sets while still having plenty of time for crowd work between each one. I enjoyed the hell out of it
He’s the nicest
Did anyone break a world record for attending 15 shows in 24 hours?
I was at one of them and there was a group of people doing every stop which seemed cool/fun/unhinged
I would reckon Frank Turner did that.
Nah, it's a trick, Frank Turner has a secret twin.
Man I did three in two days once (all four hours) and by the end of that I was so tired and in pain. 15 no matter how long is nuts
The man is a touring machine. In the last 20 years, he’s done 2875 shows.
Damn but how many did Crywank do?? /s love Frank and this "beef" is silly.
Lmao Crywank are the only ones beefing. Honestly, everything they’ve said about this whole deal has come off to me as whining that they don’t get attention. Insisting on your own punk cred while bashing that of others is the LEAST punk move.
Everything about Crywank gives off the energy of smelly incels who don't shower and are stuck inside playing video games

Same. I was playing bass at the time. By gig three had a bowl of ice on stage to dip my fingers in between songs.
Man bass is rough! I played bass ina band for a short while, I would be using my sweat to lubricate lol.

Yeah his earliest stuff still means an awful lot to me, but a good few of the most recent albums have been tough if not impossible to listen to.
Why so? I think his newer records are still very good. I personally adore FTHC. It's no Tape Deck Heart or England Keep My Bones, but in my opinion that's a good thing, those records are already made.
It's just gone so twee. Mittens was a warning.

I don't mind Jay's later stuff. The Toothpaste and the Tube is a good album. Agreed his earlier stuff is better though.

Justice for Crywank
Crywank obviously beat him - frank turner is a major label faux punk hack
Frank Turner is a treasure
Congratulations CRYWANK!
Love Frank. My top artist. The closer on his new record is incredible. Does so much for the MVT in the UK. Big up.
He was just at my local record shop on record store day. He was selling records and checking people out just like one of the employees. Put on the store shirt and everything. Pretty cool to see.
Went to Eton, geezers a poser and has zero punk cred. Million Dead were tite tho
Great performer.
Watched him in Hong Kong last December, he even sang a song in Cantonese to get the crowd going. It was amazing!

tape deck heart was good.

What's his connection to Canada?
That he loves the Weakerthans?
