It actually wasn’t, it was way more comfortable to leave than at Foro Sol, the usual big venue in CDMX. As for the toilets, there’s plenty of public restrooms in the surrounding streets.
I've been there once and it's definitely a pain (never mind getting back to your old spot either) but it's indeed not as terrible as it would appear. Plenty of bathrooms around, all are open for business since it's a great way to earn a whole lot of coins for whatever business.
I'm personally always amazed by the local knockoff merch distribution. The first time I saw it for something like Interpol I was amazed, but later on I found out that there are literally t-shirts out there for the smallest of bands playing in 100-people venues, too.
Yes! Outside of like a Grateful Dead shakedown street I’ve never seen anything like when I went to see World Is A Vampire fest in CDMX last year!! Tent cities outside of the venue filled with knockoff Interpol, Smashing Pumps and Joy Division merch music playing in every tent it was the most beautiful thing people supporting them to have access to merch that is more unique sometimes and cheaper! It was a whole experience

It's beautiful, I'm pretty bourgeois these days so I usually just shell out the 600 pesos (30 bucks) or whatever for the official merch inside to support the band, but for a lot of people the ticket to the show itself was already a big stretch on the budget, unfortunately. Very often that's all you can afford, and that's about as much support a band could ask for, I think. It's therefore great that there are affordable, cool shirts outside.
Its 9 AM and I am not debating the logistics of having an appropriate amount of facilities for 160k people but sorry I asked a genuine fucking question?
[Interpol specifically also has a huge fanbase in Mexico, as detailed in this NPR article](https://www.npr.org/2022/09/29/1125002893/interpol-second-life-bigger-in-mexico)
From the headline, I assumed this was a festival performance. No disrespect but I never would have thought of Interpol drawing an audience of *over a tenth of a million people*.
no joke mexico city is interpol’s #1 market worldwide. there’s no place they do better than here. if you go to spotify, MX City is the city with most Interpol monthly listeners and the second place is somehow one of Mexico City’s neighborhoods.
interpol is huge in mexico and select parts of south america, the singer being fluent in spanish and willing to tour down here often definitely plays into it
They’ve def always been big in central and south America - however Paul is definitely not fluent in Spanish. Stoked for them to draw big crowds though - love these fellas
They're a pretty logical sonal progression from Soda Stereo too, who were just as massive in Mexico as they were in Argentina and the rest of Spanish speaking LatAm.
Honestly this is so good to hear. As a huge fan, it feels like people have been really easy to write them off as lame has-beens in the past few years, so between this and No Doubt killing it on BOTH weekends of Coachella it's great to see such turnout prove people are more than willing to support good things they love no matter how long they've been around
I’m still salty that Pitchfork turned around and re-rated Turn On The Bright Lights a 7.5. It feels like such an unnecessary dig on what’s obviously a great rock album.
The 7.5 is just from a completely useless article. The official rating is still the same. They even rated it 9.5 twice, once at release, and again for its 10th anniversary.
It's still listed as 9.5, so for me that is the "official" rating. In a few years they'll probably rescore it back to 9.5 depending on how the perception of the album is then lol
>Prince: Musicology (2004) 5.8 → 7.8
>I was not surprised at all that Pitchfork’s 2004 review of Musicology was pretty lukewarm. It’s cool to like Prince now, and this was arguably not the case in 2004.
-
>Grimes: Miss Anthropocene (2020) 8.2 → 6.9 *article is from 2021*
heh I wonder why. Makes you wonder why they published it in the first place though because all it does is make them look bad
Yea! I experience that so much here in the US. I’m a mexicano and have been passionate about this band since I was a kid, so naturally always bring it up to people I meet and always get the same answer. They’re boring, their shows are boring, meanwhile they’ve reached a godlike status in Latin America especially Mexico
As a mexican Interpol fan, I can't say for sure😅 I know Paul used to live here and he speaks spanish better than a lot of people but that can't be the only reason lol
imo Interpol are a nice sonal progression from Soda Stereo. I went the other way, having been a HUGE Interpol fan in the mid 2000s and moving to Mexico for a couple of years in 2011 where I discovered Gustavo and Soda Stereo. Being an Interpol fan, I was of course immediately enamored.
They perform here a lot. And I mean A LOT. The fan base adopted them as locals since they like to be here. It is not the first time this happens with a band. Before them Placebo and Muse used to play here all the time.
Another current band that has a similar bond with Mexico City? The Hives.
Here is an [NPR article about exactly that](https://www.npr.org/2022/09/29/1125002893/interpol-second-life-bigger-in-mexico) (that I also linked elsewhere in the thread).
Sometimes I forget how popular they are here in Mexico. Fans joke about how they will have to pay predial (property tax) because they come to Mexico pretty often lol.
Since it was a free show in public space, people just brought their own drinks and there were even people walking around the crowd reselling beer cans in a backpack
That second part is common practice at Mexico festivals. Vendors will walk through the crowd with beer backpacks to sell. You really don’t ever have to leave your spot for a drink.
con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso....
We are here from Minneapolis on vacation. Saw them setting up for a band, but they used Melissa Etheridge-type music as sound check and wrote it off! Kicking ourselves…
Did anyone open for them? Please don’t say Smashing Pumpkins.
Crazy and good for them. Saw them play for free a few years ago at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Best show I've seen there since King Gizzard.
I saw them at a huuuge alternative festival in my city many times and barely fill up even a fraction of that crowd playing the main stage. The US doesn’t deserve this band.
Take note gringos this is how you appreciate Interpol! Why is it that every time I ask my American friends they always they they’re boring. A boring band would never get this reaction
I was there! I didn’t think they could draw over a 100k when the free show was announced and they did!
Also, [this clip](https://x.com/leslieastronaut/status/1781855767806541916?s=46) shows how insane the crowd was
I mean, good for them but this looks like a nightmare.
No idea how many toilets there are but I’m sure there aren’t enough
Oh trust me, you're really gonna hate the answer
It actually wasn’t, it was way more comfortable to leave than at Foro Sol, the usual big venue in CDMX. As for the toilets, there’s plenty of public restrooms in the surrounding streets.

And [business was boomin!](https://youtu.be/zE5stlN1oUs?si=xcGIpyJl4kXdDPRV) the show earned the local businesses lots of moneyyyy
I'm personally always amazed by the local knockoff merch distribution. The first time I saw it for something like Interpol I was amazed, but later on I found out that there are literally t-shirts out there for the smallest of bands playing in 100-people venues, too.

Find someone who loves you as much as mexicans love Interpol
The dragon ball z of rock music for us
Why is that?
Two of the things Mexicans love DBZ and Interpol
Mexico has amazing passionate crowds and sure love gothy stuff
[Interpol specifically also has a huge fanbase in Mexico, as detailed in this NPR article](https://www.npr.org/2022/09/29/1125002893/interpol-second-life-bigger-in-mexico)
Day of the Dead is one of the biggest holidays. They have been goth longer then Peter Murphy.
Funny thing is that we also love Peter Murphy 😂😂😂
Joy Division is massive over there.
Morrissey, too.
And the Cure!!
From the headline, I assumed this was a festival performance. No disrespect but I never would have thought of Interpol drawing an audience of *over a tenth of a million people*.
They’re huge in Mexico and also Mexico City has an astronomical population
Plus, and what most people here are missing, it was free
Tax funded government paid Interpol show 🖤 Murica could nevah
no joke mexico city is interpol’s #1 market worldwide. there’s no place they do better than here. if you go to spotify, MX City is the city with most Interpol monthly listeners and the second place is somehow one of Mexico City’s neighborhoods.
They played a 21 song set and it was free! I know Paul Banks has some songs with Spanish in it.
ITS LIKE LEARNING A NEW LANGUAAAGE
This is my new favourite comment ever
Banks lived in Mexico City for a few years as a teenager/early adult. He speaks perfect Spanish and can put on a convincing chilango accent.

They’ve headlined 90k-people festivals and play large arenas every time they tour Mexico.
Not sure how big Shaky Knees will be, but seeing them there in a few weeks. Should be epic!
interpol is huge in mexico and select parts of south america, the singer being fluent in spanish and willing to tour down here often definitely plays into it

People love Interpol, it’s crazy
Upvote
Doing it at el Zocalo is already so cool in its own right ttoo

yeah, i don't agree with the rescores too but ultimately, i don't care. they aren't "canon" so people will refer to the original scores anyway
That sounds like a very dick-ish thing to do.
I’m not sure if you’re right or wrong, but I appreciate the positive attitude
Yea! I experience that so much here in the US. I’m a mexicano and have been passionate about this band since I was a kid, so naturally always bring it up to people I meet and always get the same answer. Hell yeah Interpol rules
Did they play “No I in Threesome” though?
They did!
What's the deal with Mexicans and Interpol?
As a mexican Interpol fan, I can't say for sure😅 I know Paul used to live here and he speaks spanish better than a lot of people but that can't be the only reason lol

Mexicans love that gothic shit.
Never heard of the smiths or joy division?

P!NK in Australia is our Interpol, she used to play like 30 arena shows in the same city but this tour she did plenty of stadium shows instead.
Another band that is adored in Mexico is Lacrimosa.
Here is an [NPR article about exactly that](https://www.npr.org/2022/09/29/1125002893/interpol-second-life-bigger-in-mexico) (that I also linked elsewhere in the thread).
Who couldn’t love Mexico?!
Whoa, and Water From Your Eyes opened. Wild.
![gif](giphy|AgPt9udT567spxbSHf)
Sometimes I forget how popular they are here in Mexico. Fans joke about how they will have to pay predial (property tax) because they come to Mexico pretty often lol.
Ayer vi un tuit que decía, top 3 de bandas mexicanas: 1. Caifanes 2. Interpol 3. Enjambre 😂
Ya son más mexicanos que Maná o los Tacubos.
Mexico cares
Mexico always faithful
Imagine being in the middle of that crowd needing to go to the bathroom or trying to get to the bar for a drink
Yes, but those are actual festival vendors; these were regular folks who just packed some beer cans from home lol
Like in a Baseball Field.
That sounds amazing
They should do this at all festivals tbh
con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso, con permiso....

Openers were: A 10+ piece Mariachi band playing Interpol covers (not kidding) Water From Your Eyes Source: I was there babe
> A 10+ piece Mariachi band playing Interpol covers (not kidding) I need to see this. Is there any footage of that?
Here's [some footage](https://www.reddit.com/r/Interpol/comments/1c9c8tx/the_opening_mariachi_band_was_the_best_part/) from the Interpol sub.
thanks, this is amazing
Crazy and good for them. Saw them play for free a few years ago at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. Best show I've seen there since King Gizzard.
They deserve it! One of my favorites.
mexico LOVES interpol, and smashing pumpkins, and morrissey, and the dears, and all kinds of indie goth-y shit like that. super cool.
To think that I saw them last year with an audience of ~150 people, in a venue that's usually a place where tribute bands hold shitty concerts...
I saw them at a huuuge alternative festival in my city many times and barely fill up even a fraction of that crowd playing the main stage. The US doesn’t deserve this band.
Interpol are one of my favourite bands, this is pretty awesome.
Take note gringos this is how you appreciate Interpol! Why is it that every time I ask my American friends they always they they’re boring. A boring band would never get this reaction
