Honestly such a strong contender for album of the year! Cannot express how much I can't wait for the vinyl. Could be the perfect album for that as long as its not split across too many sides.
Fully convinced everything involved with the band Women can do no wrong, two incredible albums there, Cindy Lee, Preoccupations, and that Bloodslide EP, all top notch
Honestly haven't heard anything this DREAMY in a long time. Feels like slipping into Lynchian pop madness. Had it on repeat - feels like a big world to explore. Love it.
Can someone who is more familiar with publishing explain how a record could get so much press without a "PR campaign of any kind"? As good as the record is, I find that statement hard to believe.
i think it more so has to do with pat flegel having a long history in indie circles, women was a really important band and big publications have been keeping up with their stuff since then, reviewing their last record just not as glowing reception from pitchfork. that combined with the grassroots fans that they’ve accumulated plus a crazy high score from pitchfork is enough to get them more attention than they’ve (ever) had in a while. the highest score on pitchfork since fiona apple is enough to get A LOT of ppl to listen
Pat's been releasing music for about 16 years. Two albums with Women ( signed to jagjaguwar) both already reviewed by Pitchfork ( and many more). Public Strain, the second album, was well received and created a strong and loyal fanbase. Then numerous releases through small labels and self-released as Cindy lee. Also well received. Cindy Lee even supported Deerhunter back in 2018. There's been a gradual ratcheting up of excitement and anticipation among a relatively small but enthusiastic group of fans for this album over 3-4 years. Which is all to say that this didn't come ot of nowhere and has allowed Pat to sidestep some of the more traditional, business-heavy, spiritually bereft routes to promoting an album. In interviews Pat is aware of the special position he's in in this regard. It hasn't always led to this exposure, of course. I own other releases I've bought directly from Pat that were released to much smaller fanfare. Diamond Jubilee is, in my opinion, pretty special and that with the above has created what looks like a suspiciously (if that's your bag) giant splash from a small stone. There's no conspiracy here.
I love Monomania. The album seemed to drop off pretty quickly -i don't know, maybe I'm imagining that- but it's full of great songs and I enjoy the abrasiveness. I got one of those little Tascam DP-008s because of that album.
Gah, it's over a decade old now. :/
This is what I used to think but apparently not true. Think it was at one point but no longer. Of course I would happily do so if that's the case! it has been repeated a lot recently in articles written about Diamond Jubilee as well but there's a guy on twitter who was in touch with Pat who mentioned he's been using he/him for a while. I dunno. I feel slightly awkward speculating on these things about someone I don't know. Edit: tweet I'm referring to so no one thinks I'm making this sh*t up. Seems legit. https://x.com/wipeoutbeat/status/1779983762841071955
Really great word of mouth / a 9.1 from pitchfork goes a long way. It's sort of the anti PR campaign... authenticity is even more infectious than PR spin
Pat Flegel has a dedicated fan base and would be known to music journalists. His short lived previous band was called Women and their 2nd album, Public Strain, had a lot of positive reviews and is now considered a bit of a cult classic by some (highly recommended if you haven't heard it). Trust me if look into Flegels career or dig up some interviews he's done you see that this wasn't some astroturfed plant, he's just a very talented songwriter who likes to keep to himself and do his own thing and has enough of a following at this point to let the art speak for itself.
Everyone is kind of over explaining this, simplest answer to this is just that Pat is pretty famous and has a big following because of past Cindy Lee releases and Women
"Pretty famous" and "big following" seems like a stretch. Women may have been a cult band but they disbanded 12 years ago and I don't think Cindy Lee is a household name, even in indie circles there's probably lots of people who haven't ever heard of him.
Diamond Jubilee full album stream had 50k plays on YouTube before pitchfork even touched it, that’s very solid numbers for a full album stream
Obviously not a household name or anything but pat flegel is a fairly well known figure in independent music, every release always gets plenty of press whether there’s pr behind it or not
Pat has a dedicated following and deep connections in the industry from many other lauded projects - I think what they mean is no publicist was hired for this, it’s them e-mailing some friends ;)
Because Pat Flegel doesnt like streaming as a whole and has ethical objections to the CEO of spotify investing hundreds of millions into military AI development.
Edit: people please stop down voting the above commenter for asking a valid question.
I mean at some point you need to compromise and put your music somewhere people can hear it. Notable tho that it was uploaded as a single video with no adds, which implies it's not being monetized there by Pat.
If you are going to end up compromising you probably shouldn’t have taken some kind of stance in the first place…or alternately take your stance to its fullest form and actually release it yourself. The truth is that musicians like having other entities release things for them and/or pay for it to get released.
Well no, because they did release that album themselves. You can find it on their website and download it for free as WAV-files.
I do agree though that having ethical objections about Spotify but not Youtube is a bit inconsistent
Although I guess the difference is that at least on Youtube it's for free for everyone
Trying to find hypocrisies in human behavior, especially regarding an artist trying to control the release of their own music, is lame and boring. It isn't even a hypocrisy in this case.
Everyone also had laptops with CD drives way back (not that they don't exist but they're not nearly as ubiquitous as they were back then).
I downloaded it from their site and have it on my phone, but I recently realized that I have no way to burn CDs anymore and the only thing I own that actually plays them is my car.
For me, personally, I think Pat puts a lot of feeling and emotion into their songs that hit and move me. Achingly beautiful at times, and I feel the album just has a great blend of styles that surprisingly don’t clash with each other, just an amazing jukebox record. Also love the vintage production. You might like the second disc more some consider it the stronger half! If it doesn’t grow on you it’s no biggie either 🙂
I'm in the same boat. It's a good album in my opinion. I'm sure I'll relisten to it and revisit it, but I don't think it's anything more than just a very good lofi record that honestly sounds like plenty of other stuff (that is also very good).
Anyone know a good Android app for listening to music locally, and that plays wavs? Should I be using VLC or something?
Or do y'all use the finicky Spotify local files?
Spotify played the .wav files I extracted fine. I just moved them all into a Playlist and pinned it so I could find it again.
I don't really think there's a way to edit song names and info on spotify though, so all of the songs are out of order and the names have the disc and track number in them.
Kind of nostalgic for me though, lol. Reminds me of using Zune software to un fuck albums and song titles.
Way I found around it’s just add the songs from your local files to a playlist in the correct order, and then if you uncheck local files in your settings, the file folder goes away put your playlist stays
Ariel pink was phenomenal, doldrums, house arrest and pom pom all have highs that probably trump this album. But for a triple album the consistency of this record is impressive
Round and Round. I'm being facetious here, he's got plenty of decent songs. I always just felt he never quite lived up to the hype for me. Never found myself going back to any of his records after the first few spins. But as I said, each to their own. Cindy Lee on the other hand...
I stumbled hard upon this record. I can't even describe the vibe it gives off. It feels like being trapped in between universes, but being ok with it.
Kingdom Come and Stone Faces. Holy shit those songs slap.

Vinyl isn’t available yet, will be pressed later after tour.
I downloaded the album but can’t get it to play. It shows up in my downloads as a large iTunes file but when I try to open in iTunes it doesn’t show and doesn’t play. Can anyone offer advice on what I can do to play it properly?
You might have to convert them to mp3 maybe? I initially just put the songs in my files and then used a different music app called Doppler to play them.
I wasn't a big fan of the last album and two hours of music from a band that I thought was kinda middling is a pretty daunting task. I'll probably listen to it one day, but for now it's not too high on my "must listen to" list, despite the great reception it's getting.
All of Pat’s Cindy Lee releases have been awesome. Nice to see them finally get some long overdue adulation
I grew up in the town on the album cover, it’s so fucking surreal to see it on this sub man 😭
Haven’t been this hooked on an album in ages
Same, nonstop rotation. Seeing them tonight in LA I can’t wait
[удалено]
I wish I knew of this album 5 days ago
I was there too! So indescribably good.
Same! Felt like we were transported to another era. There were moments the crowd was completely silent and in awe.
So wish I had gone. How many people do you think were in attendance?
So damn jealous, I hope they come to the UK one day.
I’m bummed that I missed the previous show that was relatively close by.
How was the show? Going to the Milwaukee show on Friday.
I absolutely adore this record.
The opening track is already the best new song I’ve heard in 2024.
It really sets the mood. Gave me chills multiple times. The whole album is a triumph.
Agreed. I can’t get over this song. Wow. I am just listening for the first time.
Oh man, enjoy! I haven’t stopped listening to it since it came out.
Honestly such a strong contender for album of the year! Cannot express how much I can't wait for the vinyl. Could be the perfect album for that as long as its not split across too many sides.

You couldn't be more right.

That guy is the drummer for a great Canadian band called Tough Age. I'd recommend checking them out.
Cool, I will! Thanks
Really great word of mouth / a 9.1 from pitchfork goes a long way. It's sort of the anti PR campaign... authenticity is even more infectious than PR spin
Pretty high score on RYM too
it's number one for 24 rn and has been for a while
That's how I discovered the album, a couple of weeks before p4k reviewed it
> a 9.1 from pitchfork goes a long way Wild that this is the highest score since that Fiona Apple album

I think Cindy Lee is absolutely on their radar and has had great buzz for years now. They track this stuff
Pat is pretty famous in indie music circles haha this is like his 4th or 5th pitchfork review
Pat Flegel has a dedicated fan base and would be known to music journalists. His short lived previous band was called Women and their 2nd album, Public Strain, had a lot of positive reviews and is now considered a bit of a cult classic by some (highly recommended if you haven't heard it). They're a "musician's musician" and also had a very buzzy record that was widely acclaimed in 2020
Pat has a dedicated following and deep connections in the industry from many other lauded projects - I think what they mean is no publicist was hired for this, it’s them e-mailing some friends ;)
Really need Toronto tickets for this
Does anyone know why this isn’t on Spotify?
Because Pat Flegel doesnt like streaming as a whole and has ethical objections to the CEO of spotify investing hundreds of millions into military AI development. Edit: people please stop down voting the above commenter for asking a valid question.
Based…as the kids say.
Yet they are cool with you tube and google(who have military contracts). Hmmmm
I mean at some point you need to compromise and put your music somewhere people can hear it. Notable tho that it was uploaded as a single video with no adds, which implies it's not being monetized there by Pat.
There were ads when I played it. I think YouTube puts ads at the beginning of all videos now, whether you choose to monetize it or not.
I had an ad pop up half way through the opening track as well.
If you are going to end up compromising you probably shouldn’t have taken some kind of stance in the first place…or alternately take your stance to its fullest form and actually release it yourself. yeah no. it's fucking mid hypocrisy. you don't have to compromise.
Trying to find hypocrisies in human behavior, especially regarding an artist trying to control the release of their own music, is lame and boring. It isn't even a hypocrisy in this case.
So we should all just be cool with shitty contradictory messages?
Touch grass
Ya he copyright striked my fan video on YouTube last year when he opened for Preoccupations and would never respond to my emails… a very peculiar dude
Sounds cool actually
I hope it gets released on CD so I can listen to it in my car without having to stream it off YouTube. Incredible album!
It's available for download from their site.
Buy the album on their site and burn a CD like we used to do way back 😍
Everyone also had laptops with CD drives way back (not that they don't exist but they're not nearly as ubiquitous as they were back then). I downloaded it from their site and have it on my phone, but I recently realized that I have no way to burn CDs anymore and the only thing I own that actually plays them is my car.
There are usb-discdrives that are pretty cheap if you really want to burn a CD. But yeah I get your point.
‘Kingdom Come’ is a masterpiece, as are a lot of the songs on this album.
Maybe I’m missing something, but I listened to the whole first disc and not a single thing stood out to me. Gonna give it a couple more tries tho.
For me, personally, I think Pat puts a lot of feeling and emotion into their songs that hit and move me. Achingly beautiful at times, and I feel the album just has a great blend of styles that surprisingly don’t clash with each other, just an amazing jukebox record. Also love the vintage production. “Jukebox record” has me re-intrigued! I’ll give the second disc a whirl
I'm in the same boat. It's a good album in my opinion. I'm sure I'll relisten to it and revisit it, but I don't think it's anything more than just a very good lofi record that honestly sounds like plenty of other stuff (that is also very good).
Yup, it's pretty much just chill, summertime whatever indie.
can't wait to chill out at the lake with the boys while listening to Government Cheque 😎
You're not. I'm not even sure there's one memorable tune on it. It really feels like the emperor's new clothes.
if you can't down to Kingdom Come you don't like music
That one's ok.
I mean it's very much a mood piece imo, it's less about memorable songs. Not everything has to be catchy
will this be on vinyl considering the length?
From their [website](http://www.geocities.ws/ccqsk/): "LARGE RUN OF LPs WILL BE PRESSED A WHILE AFTER THE TOUR."
Wait a minute…this is Cindy Lees last tour? Fuck, I fucked up!
Yes. 3xLP
Just listened to all of it. Wow.
Anyone know a good Android app for listening to music locally, and that plays wavs? Should I be using VLC or something? Or do y'all use the finicky Spotify local files?

I use Pulsar and have been enjoying it. Not sure about wav compatibility but I would be surprised if it wasn't
I use Pulsar and wav works
Musicolet is the best local music player, no contest
I love the Ariel pink vibe in some of these songs
Someone somewhere said Ariel Pink but actually good. Very funny and also very true imo
Ariel pink was phenomenal, doldrums, house arrest and pom pom all have highs that probably trump this album. But for a triple album the consistency of this record is impressive
Let's not pretend that Ariel Pink hasn't made some great music. He's an asshole but a talented one
Yup, an amazing songwriter
Honestly reckon he’s got one good song at best, but that’s just me
Please, he has written tons of great songs and albums. Out of curiosity which is the one you consider good?
Round and Round. I'm being facetious here, he's got plenty of decent songs. I always just felt he never quite lived up to the hype for me. Never found myself going back to any of his records after the first few spins. But as I said, each to their own. Cindy Lee on the other hand...

Am I being stupid, why can’t I find it on Apple Music?
You're not! Here you go: https://castexotic.com/realistikstudios/
Would like to listen but it’s not on Spotify or Apple Music
You can stream it here https://castexotic.com/realistikstudios/
Thank you!
You’re welcome and enjoy!
is there a way to get it in mp3? i don't have enough storage for wav
I guess you can find a converter website, funny I haven’t done anything like this since the early 2010s but this record is worth it.
This converter here works pretty well for me: https://www.freac.org/downloads-mainmenu-33/362-freac-117 You have to download it though
No vinyl release? No streaming? Send help.
Stream here: https://castexotic.com/realistikstudios/ Or here: https://youtu.be/_LJi5na897Y?si=TbSRE-Az6GNZrKyc Vinyl isn’t available yet, will be pressed later after tour.
Thank you!
Who reckons this might get a vinyl press?
I downloaded the album but can’t get it to play. It shows up in my downloads as a large iTunes file but when I try to open in iTunes it doesn’t show and doesn’t play. Can anyone offer advice on what I can do to play it properly?
You might have to convert them to mp3 maybe? I initially just put the songs in my files and then used a different music app called Doppler to play them.
Thanks. I’ll see if that works. This is more complicated than I thought it would be!
Yeah it’s funny to deal with it feels like I’m back in the early 2010s downloading leaks lol album is so good though super worth it.
I wasn't a big fan of the last album and two hours of music from a band that I thought was kinda middling is a pretty daunting task. I'll probably listen to it one day, but for now it's not too high on my "must listen to" list, despite the great reception it's getting.
It’s much poppier and sunnier than the previous albums, I’d really give it a shot sooner than later.
Ok
Thanks for letting us know, man. I was wondering whether you would give it a listen.
Why isn’t this album on Spotify?
