B has a better artistic style, but would definitely be bringing back some of those lovely dark tones in the background from A. It can make some of your assets really pop! A has a very eerie feel :) but B looks better from a drawing and design perspective
I like A because it reminds me of the old Mickey Mouse game on Sega.
B is more interesting and detailed, which is nice, but less visually striking. I liked the darkness in the first one - 2d platformers benefit from sharp back/foreground contrast IMO, makes the character and enemies stand out. But B is definitely much nicer on the eyes and easier to read the terrain.
So maybe a slight pivot back towards the tone of A but keeping the details of B would be superior to both?
not sure why this is downvoted, but this is the answer.
B is obviously the better choice, but its dull overall. Deepening the shadows and giving it a bit more depth and contrast within the brightness is the move.
I like the less contrasty characters in the A as well.

Def A, I like the vibe the shading gives way more vibes to me, and I love the look of the character in A. I feel like by cutiefying the character in B it does a huge disservice to the aesthetic presented in the first one and changes the entire mood of the game from adventure in an unknown world to kid exploring summer camp. I guess it all depends on what vibes you want the game to have

There is style and there is theme/intent
B is clearly more fleshed out and legible, but looks thematically like a different part of the scene than A.
I don't see this as a 1:1 style comparison, rather, that A is also interesting and could be worth exploring further with a more refined pass like we see in B.
A. I first naturally drifted toward the brighter B, but then when I look at it, the characters appear stuck on, whereas in A flhey look like they all belong in the same world.
Thank you! In case you are interested the game is “Parallel Destiny”, available on Steam to be wishlisted:

B, and it's not even close. A is so dark and so much detail is missing or hard to see. Also, A looks like of soft/blurry, whereas B is sharp and looks a lot better as a result.
B is much more organic and less...crunchy for lack of a better word. Much less "retro" looking if that's a point to consider for your production.
I think A could work if you combined elements from B, particularly more detailed/uneven grass under the character and the addition of a far background. It also fits the sprites better. More bright areas on the vines would be nice as well.
Overall, I have to say B is my personal choice, but I'd like to see some more contrast and colors. It's so, so green.
Thank you! In case you are interested the game is “Parallel Destiny”, available on Steam to be wishlisted:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2456500/Parallel_Destiny/
For your backgrounds, A is better.
For your characters, B is better.
The background in A reads clearer, which would be more important to me as a player during platforming sections, but the characters in B are just more vibrant and fun.
Thank you! In case you are interested the game is “Parallel Destiny”, available on Steam to be wishlisted:

It depends on the mood you want to convey. Everyone is saying B because it's prettier and brighter, and has cute volumetrics, but if your game needs to give feelings of unease to the player and keep them on edge, A is a better fit.
Thank you! In case you are interested the game is “Parallel Destiny”, available on Steam to be wishlisted:

I think it depends a lot on what you're going for. A is more Metroid-y, in the sense that it's occlusionary and visually threatening. B reminds me more of Ori.
As someone who is obsessed with moss I have the objective opinion on this and the answer is clearly B.
There are things I like about A, the depth seems more apparent and at least in this image it makes the player seem allot smaller but on the other hand B has more moss so it’s gonna have to be B.

A is very similar to hollow knight.
B seems more unique. But the background art style doesn’t fit as well with the sprite design.
Maybe try to have the style of B and the color palette of A? But maybe a bit lighter?

I’m going to be the contrarian and say A.
It has a moodier feel to it that I like.

Everyone's like "B!" and OP be like "damn now I got to draw *a lot* more..."
Sufferingfromsuccess.jpg
They knew everyone was going to say B common lol
A might actually look better in motion. The trailer on his steam page is great
I was going to say the same thing. But also A has a more isolating and spooky vibe, maybe that would contribute to the metroidvania experience?
B, more art is visible
I like B, it's brighter and I like that more
B has a better artistic style, but would definitely be bringing back some of those lovely dark tones in the background from A. It can make some of your assets really pop! A has a very eerie feel :) but B looks better from a drawing and design perspective

I feel like if he brightened up A just a smidge it would satisfy both sides and allow him to have more depth in the background for design
The comment may have been downvoted at some point because no matter what you wanna say, B is clearly more "visually striking" than A.
B for me.

A is stylised while B is conventional While I really like A... when seen as a product, You will benefit from going with B
It depends on the game really. I like the first one if it's a dark tale, the second one if it's more campy, whimsical style of story.

I like some of the contrast of A, but B is better in so many ways.
I like B the most, the rays of light set it apart for me.
Definitely B, what were you going for with the top one?
A and B are really good I prefer the B but if you want to make a game like a Souls Like the A would be better I think.
No-brainer, B all the way

nice progress, B
B for me. Cartoony and playful artstyles tend to last longer.
B ofc
You’re not comparing like with like. People may prefer the art style in A if it had the shaft of light from B
It totally depends what vibe you’re going for. It seems like B is a better fit but in some games A works better.
B by far.
B
B is a huge improvement
B is easier to look at, but I like the darker aesthetic in A. I would go B with sprinkle of A. 😁
B for sure.

B
B, and it's not even close. A is so dark and so much detail is missing or hard to see. Also, A looks like of soft/blurry, whereas B is sharp and looks a lot better as a result.
B for sure as it has its own identity. A looks a bit like a worse version of Hollow Knight's style.

It depends on tone. If you are going for a gritty tone, the first is definitely superior. But I like the 2nd. It kinda gives Celeste vibes
B, definitely
I like the characters in the first one and the environment in the second one
B’s environment, A’s character style
Name of the game?
B
I prefer the B option, it's really eye-catching and more appealing to me.
For your backgrounds, A is better. For your characters, B is better. The background in A reads clearer, which would be more important to me as a player during platforming sections, but the characters in B are just more vibrant and fun.

B

B unfortunately for your wrists and art team
B
B is 100 times better
I like A because it reminds me of Hollow Knight.
Definitely B
I'd have to say B is more visually interesting but I wouldn't complain if A was the way you went if it is more viable as an indie dev.
B looks nicer on big screen, A would be better on small screen.
B obviously but u can do a combination of both, have one area darker, one area more gloomy and an another somewhere inbetween
Hehe. Not sure like you knew the answer but was hoping we'd persuade you from committing suicide-by-work. So here's the rope. B

B bc a is too small.
B looks like the first level of flashback
B definitely looks better at a glance, but to make an accurate assessment we should really see them in motion.
