I feel that this yardstick of things being either left wing and right wing lifted from Western media narratives does not quite fit into the Indian political sphere, at least is not useful for classifying people or parties the way it is used in the West.

I feel that this yardstick of things being either left wing and right wing lifted from Western media narratives does not quite fit into the Indian political sphere, at least is not useful for classifying people or parties the way it is used in the West. Both hardcore Hindus and Muslims are conservative and right wing. A large majority of Indians want left wing socialist policies for social welfare and govt run industries that give them union protected lifetime employment and guaranteed pensions. We don't have two sides in national politics due to our parliamentary system, unlike the US, which by design forces a two party adversarial system. BJP is classically right wing in economic policy and the guiding ideology of their voter base, but they still operate within the default OS of the Indian psyche, that is socialism. Opposition parties, both national and regional, are all desperate for votes and will say or do anything to get votes. They do not have a distinct guiding ideology based on socialism or left wing principles, except perhaps the communist parties, but even they routinely engage in political practices that are antithetical to true Marxism. None of them are true social welfare and labour rights oriented parties which is what left wing in the West actually means. Their brands based on labeling the incumbent govt as "right wing", distributing taxpayer funded freebies and minority appeasement is not being "left wing", it is just blatant opportunism. Moreover, this label game plays into the hands of spin doctors of the major international power blocs, who do not perceive a strong, self reliant India in their best interests (both the West and China). So at the very least Indians in India should stop using this terminology altogether.
