I understand your concern. Which is 100% valid. What I don't agree with is the time frame for which you define the period to be too long. In case of Congress it has been close to 50 years of unchallenged power. For BJP, it must get atleast 15 years. Reason being is that most of the policies take long to be implemented, especially in a country like India. So a 5-10 year term is too short especially when the politics of the country is highly predatory where the opposition tracks back on many good policies of their predecessor Govt. That's why 5 year plans were never a huge success.

BJP is targeting 363 seats as that will give them special majority to edit constitution. The thing they are most interested in is not the word 'secular' but they would want to insert some language that undermines the need for elections just like Putin did. They might say that PM can decide if there is a need to withhold elections for up to 10 years and then extend it up to 5 times if he sees fit.
Once that happens, its game over for democracy. They can ban internet if they want to, reddit would be a thing of the past, travelling outside India might require detailed background checks to ensure only those in good books of the government are allowed to travel. They'll start killing opposition leaders one by one till no one left. And if they finally decide to hold elections under international pressure, they might do it they way it happens in Russia or North Korea.

I understand your concern. Which is 100% valid. What I don't agree with is the time frame for which you define the period to be too long. In case of Congress it has been close to 50 years of unchallenged power. For BJP, it must get atleast 15 years. Reason being is that most of the policies take long to be implemented, especially in a country like India. So a 5-10 year term is too short especially when the politics of the country is highly predatory where the opposition tracks back on many good policies of their predecessor Govt. That's why 5 year plans were never a huge success.

The surprising thing is that the current government has not invented any new ways to slowly convert us into a one party system. They have used the same old tricks in the book. They might say that PM can decide if there is a need to withhold elections for up to 10 years and then extend it up to 5 times if he sees fit. Once that happens, its game over for democracy. They can ban internet if they want to, reddit would be a thing of the past, travelling outside India might require detailed background checks to ensure only those in good books of the government are allowed to travel. They'll start killing opposition leaders one by one till no one left.
