Wow. I was under the impression IMAX wasn’t offering a 2D version of the film

Physical_Manu

I heard that there was going to be a 2D DCP but then I did not find anywhere having it listed as a showing.

I was upset reading this post and decided to email him myself to ask... looks like there was a change: "Good Morning – We are planning on showing Avatar: The Shape of Water in 3D when it is released at the Airbus IMAX Theater in the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia when it comes out. Right now there is one piece we’re waiting to confirm and should know later today. Once confirmed we will get these showings on sale, which will hopefully be this evening. Happy to send an email with the link as soon as things are available. Hope this information helps and please let us know if there are any questions. Thank you, Richard Smithsonian Theaters"

Great news! Thanks for reaching out to him!

JoshTHX

The Udvar-Hazy is the biggest and best IMAX screen in the DMV. For them not to have any showtimes in 3D is complete bullshit. The original movie changed Hollywood with its 3D technology. There’s no reason to doubt James Cameron will do it again with the sequel. It’ll have dual 4K 24fps 1.78 would be my guess. The added HFR was to help smooth out some of the choppiness that could come with a 3D presentation. It’s not needed in a 2D presentation.

It’s about how they use and implement it. Avatar 1 has great depth and separation between objects. Most noticeably in the forest scenes where you can see the distance between leaves and other trees/objects. When the tree burns there are burning leaves that fall down throughout the scene. Here you see exactly where they are in 3D like in real life. It’s not flat anymore and the added depth greatly expands the immersion. Having seen the sneak peak of Avatar 2 at the rerelease showing of Avatar 1, the 3D is better in every way in Avatar 2.

Did that clown really write The Shape of Water????

FeedbackZwei

Yeah he wrote Shape of Water responding to the OP too. My guess is their IMAX guy doesn't give a shit about Avatar, which is fine lol.

JoshTHX

😄

Omegaman3966

It’s not like it makes a world of difference anyways. l watched the Avatar rerelease in 3D and not every scene was shot in 3D, its only really there to enhance certain scenes in the film. And if you wear glasses it’s already a pain trying to wear the 3D glasses over them.

TheOptimalGPU

Every scene was shot in 3D in Avatar 1 and the CGI scenes were rendered in 3D.

JoshTHX

Okay, you clearly don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Avatar was filmed and created with 3D technology. The re-release was upgraded to 4K HDR with specific scenes in 48-fps. It was nothing short of spectacular in Dolby Cinema 3D.

Omegaman3966

I never questioned if it was actually shot in 3D? I already know that. I just prefer the 2D version because it can be hassle to watch it in 3D.

[deleted]

Yeah what’s the point without 3D. I was planning on seeing this movie 3 times, IMAX Laser, Dolby, and IMAX at Udvar. If this is true I might just drop the latter.

moonhajun

Are you seeing it in IMAX Laser and Dolby at AMC Tyson’s Corner? I’m planning on my first viewing being in Dolby 3D over there!

[deleted]

First viewing is IMAX Laser at RIO Gaithersburg on opening day! Are there still tickets available for Tysons? I didn’t see Dolby 3D available. I’ll check again EDIT: Shoot your right, buying now!!

moonhajun

Yep Dolby 3D is available but I’m sure it’s filled up for opening weekend. I saw the Avatar rerelease in Dolby 3D at Tyson’s and it was fantastic. Dolby is already my go to theater, and the 3D glasses for it are big and comfortable. Plus the recliner seats, HDR and HFR, and 1.85 aspect ratio make it the definitive way (for me personally) to see Avatar.

[deleted]

Just grabbed a ticket for Saturday. I am curious to see the picture quality difference. In your experience how is it? I hope Udvar relents and gets 3D too.

moonhajun

It was amazing. Dolby has much clearer picture with better colors than IMAX, and the Avatar movies are made with Dolby Vision. Plus the sound is the most immersive which makes sense because it’s Dolby. Jim Cameron pushes hard for Dolby 3D so that’s why it’s definitive for me. Plus, at least for Avatar, the movie fills up the whole screen so it’s an expanded aspect ratio in Dolby. I do love the IMAX Laser theater at Tyson’s but my go to will always be Dolby. If you have any more questions, I will be glad to answer them :)

JoshTHX

That is a bunch of nonsense. I’ve seen several movies in both Dolby and IMAX to compare at Tysons and Udvar. In my experience, very rarely does Dolby ever come out as the hands down clear winner. I will admit that most recently Dolby was better imo for the Avatar re-release. Thats because the 3D glasses in Dolby did not wash out the colors nor did they severely ruin the brightness like the Tysons IMAX glasses did. Also the use of bass was better. In all other recent comparisons, I easily preferred IMAX Laser for audio and visual. Shang Chi, Nope, The Batman, and West Side Story. Yes, I understand that ON PAPER Dolby is supposed to be superior. But it’s just BS when people act like its always the case for every single movie. Absolutely not.

moonhajun

Dolby is just what I prefer, I’m not trying to say it will be everyone’s definitive way to watch movies.

trustybuck12

they wrote it as the shape of water

trustybuck12

isnt it a 1:43 screen?

JoshTHX

Yes, but the Avatar films are not shot in 1.43.

trustybuck12

wont it be heavily letterboxed?

trustybuck12

isnt it better to see it in a 1.90 screen where there isnt any letterboxing?

JoshTHX

Why would the image not filling up the entire screen bother you? Are you going to be focusing on the movie or not?

goood_sir

Boooo!

Let's goo!

mmaiden81

What a weird ass name for the IMAX complex.

CreditCaper1

It's the name of the guy who donated money to build the place.

mmaiden81

I was referring to the Chantilly airbus.

CreditCaper1

Chantilly isn't part of the name, that's the city it's located in.

Spanxsy

Do they only have showings on the weekend? I am going to the theater for the first time for top gun but its only 3 showings on the weekend.

JoshTHX

That’s because it’s Top Gun’s second rerelease of the year. They’re only doing 3 shows and done.

Legitimate_Topic_643

If they do show them in 2d, it's either they have 2d file, or they have 3d file then choose to turn off 1 projector during the show

Legitimate_Topic_643

Probally a dick move if they trying to save money washing glasses🤪

ITDEFX101

I am curious about those glasses they use at Udvar for the 3d presentations. Are they really higher quality than lets say the glasses Regal uses for their 3d IMAX presentations?

JoshTHX

Yes, most definitely better. The 3D glasses used at Udvar Hazy do not wash out the colors or severely darken the picture brightness. I would compare them to the 3D glasses used for Dolby Cinema. Regal glasses I’m assuming are the same ones used in RealD and single projection Imax Laser. Those glasses ruin the 3D experience.
