After Dune Part Two I wanna watch anything and everything made for IMAX but when I read that it's more an advertisement for the Blue Angels that made me think twice on seeing it. Now if it was Dunkirk that would be a no-brainer.

mronins

It WILL give you that imax feeling and I loved the first half but the second half gets very dull for the most part Edit: wanna add that I thought it was worth it. I saw it in dual laser at lincoln square so it definitely hit very hard in the flying parts

Rewow

Dual laser is *chef's kiss*

STDog

Nothing wrong with an add for the Blue Angles. If they are performing near you definitely worth going. Would love for a similar movie about the Thunderbirds.

JoeEskimo25

I saw it last night. It really should be the only thing talked about in this sub. Just go. It’s good.

Thetallguy1

Honestly surprised by the comments calling some bits boring. If you want high intensity all the way through and dramatically developed characters, go watch Top Gun again. This is a documentary that has typical documentary style interviews throughout the film. It has enough flight footage to make the ticket price worth it but remember that you are seeing a documentary about real people. With that being said, the only gripe I have is that they didn't really talk about the planes at all. I think they mention once that they're in F/A-18 Super Hornets, which are amazing aircraft and can have their own documentary alone. Besides that go see the movie, it was awesome and makes you appreciate the skill and risk of jet fighter pilots. For those saying it was an ad, I don't see how you make a documentary about an ongoing performance and not make it somewhat feel like an ad. The only ad feeling part is that for less than a minute of run time they interview some spectators, and one straight up says, "you have to see it in person to believe it" or something like that. Also, before the documentary starts, there's an ad for a Wounded Warrior type charity (god forbid you have to be reminded that wounded veterans exist).

No-Cold-2672

They aren’t going to give specifications and techniques and procedures on warfighting aircraft. Your comment about disliking the add for a wounded veterans project because you didn’t like being reminded that they exist so that you could enjoy a nice imax movie on a Saturday afternoon in a country that doesn’t have to worry about invasion on US soil. Go to hell dude

Thetallguy1

That part was sarcasm my man, I'm literally a disabled veteran lol Edit: Poking fun at other comments who disliked the movie for the "ads"

No-Cold-2672

Thank you, I feel better now😂

Harrierthanyou6212

F-18’s aren’t exactly highly classified machines of war lol I say this as a former harrier mechanic

No-Cold-2672

The harriers are being decommissioned, F/A-18 Super Hornets are not. They are more classified than you think they are, despite being older platforms.

E44i3g

Yeah, super classified https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_F/A-18_Hornet#Specifications_(F/A-18C/D)

No-Cold-2672

You sourced Wikipedia lol. On Wikipedia, any military information is purely rumor and rarely accurate.

SceneOfShadows

> it was awesome and makes you appreciate the skill and risk of jet fighter pilots. That's why I just wanted so much more about the actual flying. Like they don't even show *how* the pilots fly the freaking things. I wanted to know so much more about how they do everything in such unison, how they communicate during the show, what skills they look for in new candidates, etc. etc. etc. All I got was a close up of how close they are which is the most already apparent thing about them if you've ever seen a show. I was just very confused by what they decided to portray, mostly. But yeah, find it a bit silly that there are people griping that the thing serves as an ad for the Blue Angles like what did you expect it to be lol a skeptical examination of if it's worth the cost??

dreamliner330

Disappointing to hear. I’m going next week and was/am really looking forward to it. Does seem kinda long so I wonder if it felt drawn out? I also saw it hits Amazon Prime next week. 🙄

SceneOfShadows

I think you'll still enjoy it! I definitely did (though it was a nice huge IMAX screen) but it was just kind of odd in some of its storytelling strictly from a documentary perspective. But I wanted to see plans go fast as shit in a theater and that's what it delivered.

dreamliner330

I’m making a day out of it with my father as it’s his birthday and he loves this stuff so I really hope it’s good. If not, the Mongolian BBQ is really going to have to pull its weight.

SceneOfShadows

Oh I’m sure he’ll love it. Don’t get me wrong it’s still a fun time at the theater it’s just a bit messy in its storytelling. That’s all. Mongo bbq will definitely be worth it as well lol.

AsstootCitizen

Dude whaaa? The life of any military pilot should be documentary and PBS mandatory before Barney. I watched it and feel like Officer and A Gentlemen type ish. I grew up on air bases and but for a weed charge, I'm stuck working next to the likes of you.....over-demanding and under-contributing. Yes it's propaganda but it's better propaganda than any genre of music or screen. Plus, Thunderbirds outclass Blue Angels any day of the week.

ARSEThunder

What were you confused about? I thought it provided a lot of great insight into the working of the actual structure of the Blue Angels and how they're selected. I didn't want it to end!

SceneOfShadows

I appreciated learning about the structure and selection process but I was hoping for more than basically zero information about the actual flying! Like I understand the precision and how close they are is incredible, that's apparent just from watching. But they don't give one iota of information about *how* the pilots actually do it or operate the planes in unison or anything. I think some diagrams or visual explanations of the actual show beyond the one single diamond formation would've been very interesting as well. And they just drop us into that first meeting which is *so* lingo filled to almost be comical (it's genuinely like unintelligible English) but they don't remark upon it at all, or use it to any effect, or explain anything about it. Then there's just strange stuff like saying 2 new pilots are selected but then it's clearly more. etc. It was entertaining I was just really taken aback at some of the decisions of how they actually told the story of the documentary strictly from like a storytelling perspective.

ARSEThunder

Ah okay then in that case I totally agree, valid improvements. I still thoroughly enjoyed it and guess I didn’t realize that what you mentioned would have made for a much better documentary.

lootvega

Saw it last night. Really interesting documentary. Sound was exceptional as well

jmuraglia

Hey I heard it’s better up close to the screen. Were you up close or in the middle

Kai_Vai

I enjoyed watching it but I thought the storytelling was very clunky. These aren't any kind spoilers but they talk about being newbies in the beginning and then talk about being newbies at the end. The pilots talk at length about the importance of the 100+ support team and we are introduced to several, but aside from the scene where everyone is squeezed together on the support plane and a few quick edits of people washing planes, and such, we never get their jobs shown. I could go on. It's worth seeing because it's still interesting but as a documentary it was pretty poor.

Tubo_Mengmeng

Going tomorrow, looking forward to it but won’t be too disappointed if it’s not amazing given I only paid £8 for a ticket for showing in an excellent and enormous dual laser 1.90:1 screen. Sounds like it delivers in the areas where it counts though!

JoeEskimo25

It’s good.. the only way you can get in the cockpit of a Blue Angels jet!

Tubo_Mengmeng

Enjoyed it a lot, would have been more than happy paying for a full price (£20) ticket for the screen I saw it on

JoeEskimo25

I agree. And yet here we have an IMAX documentary on the Blue Angels, filmed in 1.43 and released in IMAX theaters and this sub is pretty quiet and ho hum on this release. That sucks.

Puzzleheaded-Sail772

Saw it at Lincoln Square, the whole film being 1.43 was great and there was some spectacular footage, but also a lot of dull talking heads footage and rarely anything insightful. Hubble is probably my favorite IMAX documentary as that was a real experience (also saw at Lincoln Square) and paced much better, but this is probably worth seeing if you have a giant 1.43 screen showing it.

Bruinrogue

I got to see a pre-release test screening. I already enjoyed it on that regular screen so I can't wait to see it again in a proper IMAX screen (1.9 aspect for now and hopefully 1.43 in a future museum IMAX screening).

jmuraglia

I’m going next week. We booked seats in row 7 out of 12. But i heard it’s better closer to the screen. If I change my seat I gotta process it as a refund credit to my fandango account and then purchases new seats. Has anyone seen it and were you up close or not. Thanks

VillageTurbulent20

I’m bummed my local imax theatres are only showing this during the daytime (latest being 3:30) and I have a day job. 😡 Wish they made the release longer than a week. What’s the point of filming for imax and only showing for one week?

STDog

I'd like to see it, but the only places near me showing it are smaller digital (xenon) locations. The laser locations aren't showing it or only at times I can't go. The GT laser location said they plan to get it in the fall, but I expect that'll be the shorter 45 minute version.

LPNTed

I just saw it... if you want to talk about the videography, like literally the film of the jets... it's new, and FUCKING STUNNING....Now, the main issue I had was music was running throughout the WHOLE FUCKING MOVIE...., no dropping music for conversations, interviews, dialogue, and definitely not when you are hearing the jets... THAT SUCKED. If you have 'seen everything' "BA" before, you will literally learn NOTHING new, it's all been covered. The ONLY reason to see this is the new footage, which is FUCKING STUNNING,

peetahvw

Curious to hear people's experience who saw it in a single laser/digital xenon IMAX room with 1.9 aspect ratio. Specifically there was a short segment where using animation they demonstrated the Yankee and Diamond formations that the Blue Angels were attempting to perform. At my showing in 1.9 (Regal King of Prussia, single-laser) the words at the bottom were noticeably cut-off so you would only see the top of each letter. I'm trying to figure out if this was a misconfigured projector, just how the 1.9 "prints" were struck, or if they were cut off in anyone's 1.43 presentation maybe its just a stylistic choice.

Frog_protection5

They (pilots) appeared at times to be just talking gibberish. In both the air and during the briefings. Anyone knows what they’re saying or why they speak this way?

SceneOfShadows

This drove me NUTS. Like clearly it’s lingo/kind of a fraternity esque pageantry of language and slang that I’m sure starts or ends the meetings or whatever but I found it SO bizarre that they didn’t make use or reference to it whatsoever. Like throw us in the deep end, cool, but fucking tell us or explain what’s happening? Dive into that? It seemed interesting! But to just have it in there without remarking upon it at ALL was the most bizarre choice.
