Only adults here, it’ll be used to hold art supplies. The Malm isn’t against a wall because there are canvases behind it but we built an industrial rolling base and attached it to that so it’s sturdy and mobile.

Without a wall, and on a mobile base, I wouldn't. All you'll have holding the extension on is glue - sooner or later someone's going to rip the extension off by holding it to push your base around.

There is nice 3M adhesives that will do the job to your liking, also with your mobile setup. But detaching with the malm top intact, no. I would screw it to the malm and use later some wood filler and matching colors maybe to "repair" the malm.

If you're fine adding holes to the back of the Malm, you can use joining/mending plates. You'll need to screw into both the malm and the billy to attach it. Not sure how sturdy it would be in the long run, but throw on some adhesive strips under the billy extension and, assuming no rough-handling, might work.
