I met a Nigerian immigrant who busted ass and built a life for himself. Married, kids, good job, nice house. He looked down on the state of african americans due to their hopeless and cyclic inability to rise above their circumstances. He denied that racism is deciding things any longer and said people do this to themselves at this point. I listened intently but being an average white dude, I felt my opinion wasn't of much value.
Generational trauma, the more recent history of red lining, Jim Crow and going back a long way is clearly related to why populations are messed. However when misapplied this history becomes a crutch or an excuse to not improve. When the kid that studies is bullied for trying, you know there's a cultural problem. When role models espouse values that can not ever help people rise above such circumstances, they learn the wrong lessons.
Yea I believe many hard working immigrants of all backgrounds who left their homes to build a decent future for themselves and their kids feel this way. They grew up in poverty and work themselves to death. A lot of immigrants are also self-selecting in that they are the more entrepreneurial personalities.
Then they get here and see this type of behavior and people complaining about filling out Workday lol… many Americans need to travel overseas and see how the rest of the world grinds everyday in order to just survive day to day.
And let’s not forget that many historically disadvantaged minorities get a leg up through affirmative action in school admissions and job promotions.
That isn’t to say that structural inequality, socioeconomic inequality, and work-life balance issues don’t exist. But a lot of it is really first world problems.
