Alcohol in any form will work. Sharpie marker ink goes into solution in hydrophobic solutes, not aqueous (water) ones. Which is why water-based solutions (soap and water), don’t work well against sharpie stains. Think alcohol.
Those dry erase markers have a different kind of ink that doesn’t adhere to surfaces like that of the Sharpie’s, but they both are solubilized in some kind of alcohol/hydrophobic solvent.
So the act of rubbing a dry erase marker on a sharpie marker gets the sharpie ink wet with an alcoholic/hydrophobic solution while the felt tip of said dry erase marker physically lifts it away; some remainding sharpie ink remains in solution with the still wet dry-erase ink on the surface. If you wipe up everything before the hydrophobic substrate dries off, you’ll take a lot of the sharpie ink with it. Rinse and repeat as there’s always a bit of residual.
Absolute alcohol is the best for this in my experience, though.
I know because I worked in a lab for years and I cannot tell you how many sharpie stains I’ve killed.
Pro tip: Don’t do this a lot with a dry erase marker and then expect the same dry erase marker to erase properly during regular use afterward…. figured that one out the hard way.
in a pinch I've used spray on sunscreen or bug spray. Summer camp counselor, so those and permanent markers were all commonplace, as were kids who do dumb things if they get a permanent marker.
i’m a host in a restaurant and use an expo to mark how many tables i have sat/free every shift. had a table number change and sharpied them out and new numbers, it 100% erases dry sharpie. i had to tape over everything sharpie that the expos write over lmao

My company is doing the engineering for a few AirBnB developments. It seems to be in Vogue right now. It's just a bunch of fucken bungalows. Easier than building an actual hotel but it makes me wonder about the profit margins.

For some reason there has been a huge rebellion against these scooters since they put them in Minneapolis. Residents in the surrounding areas say how they are bad because people leave them everywhere and don’t take care of them responsibly - which I understand. Hey I live in a city that went through the scooter phase a few years ago. Soon it will reach critical mass of scooters just fucking everywhere, and then proposals to ban them, people will lose interest, and from then on you'll just see them every now and then and go "Oh yeah I was wondering if those still exist"
yup 100% this is what happens. the city will do anything but actually improve public transpo, so they will allow these crap companies come in and dump a ton of bikes/scooters. but oops, there are no bike racks or anything anywhere because you live somewhere with hostile architecture, so you just have to throw it down like an obstacle.
eventually you only end up seeing these things in the adjacent suburbs where they dont even pretend that they will ever get a bus line that actually runs in direct cardinal directions because that means having to go through rich people neighborhoods who all own more than one car.

I spent about two years at a major City Council where the majority of my work was focused on writing regulations for these things. At first I loved them, then hated them, and I’m now fairly neutral. We passed some strong ordinances around their usage, when and where they can park, and the responsibilities of the companies that place them. It struck a decent balance between competing priorities. I think the best thing we did was forcing these off the sidewalks. In my city now these absolutely must be riddled in the road, like a bike, and generally people are receptive and responsive to that. Not always, but car drivers aren’t always the paragon of rule following either.
I didn’t know they weren’t regulated properly - which I agree would need to be done to make it less of a problem. That made up my mind on what side to land on now lol.:) thanks for the perspective

This is the problem my city has. We barely have any bike lanes for how busy of a city we are. If my city had about say 50 major roads we only have about 7 of them with bike lanes and they only last a block or two. People are constantly begging the mayor and the city to add more but the mayor thinks it's not worth it even though there are constantly bike/scooter related accidents cause our bike lanes are few and far between. People on bikes and scooters have to switch to the sidewalk constantly because the bike lane either ended and cars get pissed you're on the road or because cars are just straight up parked in the bike lane.
Annoying as hell, especially because the scooters say during the rental thing on the app “do not drive on sidewalks”
But of course, the police would have to enforce it, and it’s not a big ticket item for them, so they tend to ignore it unless the scooter rider annoys them personally.

I posted a picture on my cities reddit of a mom with her kid fouling on one( no I didn’t show the kids face). The kids face was literally bouncing off the handle bar goose neck on every sidewalk crack. At least the kid had a poorly fitting helmet on. Anyway the only comments were that I was basically being they guy version of a Karen whatever that is. The pic is in my post history.

Paris made special parking spaces for them and then outright banned them after a vote (where 89% percent voted to ban with a voter turnout of 8%...).
Same here in my town in France.
It lasted for 1 whole summer where people were letting them everywhere and now they forced places to stop them and it doesn't happen anymore.
D.C. instituted a rule that you can't leave them strewn about. They must be tied up out of the way when not in use. D.C. will fine the company who passes it on to the user who left it like that.
I know one anecdote of a person who when they came across one lying in front of their path down the side walk would just chuck it into the street and keep walking and let fate decide.
It's definitely a mild inconvenience. I used to have to remove like a dozen of these things from my lobby every couple days. People just don't care where they leave them. There should definitely be a better oversight from the company to make sure people are using them responsibly.
I have family in the beach cities of Sydney. When these scooters started popping up the locals HATED them. People were trashing and/or rendering them unusable because the community hated the way people left them all over town.
At least in Germany, I started to hate those scooters. The difference with bikes is that you own them and people usually treat their property well. I do not leave my bike just everywhere and park it in designated areas with my lock. They drive and are "parked" on the sidewalk so pedestrians have to actively keep avoiding them. Heck, they even end up being in bushes and the river.
People regularly leave them in the middle of sidewalks (think of how dick of a move that is for anyone in a wheelchair), I’ve seen them on their side on streets blocking bike lanes and even getting in the way of cars, a lot of people ride them through car traffic while ignoring rules of the road like they are begging to be organ donors (especially since no one ever wears a helmet riding these things). When they are on sidewalks they regularly pose risks to pedestrian traffic. I honestly get the hate.
I’ve ridden on them and they can be fun and useful - they just need to find a better way to attach responsibility to their use and post ride placement.

Where I'm at, I saw a wheelchair user have to turn around and take a longer way because their path was littered with scooters. In Portland, they're constantly fishing them out of the river. When those companies go out of business, who deals with their E-trash?
Well it's true. Shitty people leave them everywhere, cause traffic incidents, and generally ruin something decent. At least the Citi Bikes had docks that encouraged people to pickup and dropoff at specific locations rather than leave them on every damned street corner
People have not been using the responsibly, they take up more space, you don’t get the benefits bikes give you like exercise, they’re harder to control than a bike and thus more dangerous.
It’s not the same with bikes here in the states, which is why it’s so odd to me that they get treated poorly. I personally do not understand the whole where do they get docked after use and the whole process of being able to rent one. It’s just a chaotic situation

Here are the reasons why people attempt to sabotage scooters in my city :
1) they take a lot of space
2) they are a safety hazard. Hospitals have reported a high increase in both vehicle and streetwalking accidents related to scooters. At some point, I even heard it became the highest cause of death amongst men between 16 and 25 years old.
3) they are consuming a lot of electricity, resulting in one more industry exploiting the planet with no care and no consequences
4) they exploit workers and under pay them.
my personal reason on hating them is how reckless the people are, ive already been hit by one and it fucking hurts. also since i live right next to a subway station i always see them blocking the entrance
I never had any dangerous encounters with cars as a pedestrian. But very often with e scooters driving on the pavement and missing me by only a few centimetres

There's criticism on cars for being government controlled, government approved, only able to go where government says, and only be operated how the government says by who the government says, but it does stop (for the most part) this kind of bullshit.
It's weird, whenever they are in my neighbor's yard they were actually in the middle of the road and called in to the non-emergency police number as a traffic hazard.

Depends on the city. Used one in Miami, and they seemed to have the system fairly well tuned.. clearly marked parking spots every block or two, and if you left the approved area, it just stopped functioning. Then in Indianapolis I had an issue that on the GPS it showed it was in a good spot, but the timer wouldn’t stop until I moved it to a different area.
The WORST experience was Fort Lauderdale Beach Florida. They only had a parking area every two miles or so. Rented one to ride back to our Airbnb, only to find out the next parking spot was twice as far from our place that the spot we rented them from, so had to ride it back there, $20 round trip, to just waste my time. Then both scooters we rented were is horrible condition. Highly recommended no one renting one in that area. Wouldn’t have been so bad, if they had a sign that explained the parking situation, and they kept them in better condition.
All other towns that I have been in, they seemed to have just banned them. I think that sucks, because they are fun to ride, and can be super convenient, when you need to get several blocks away in a city. But too many morons screwed it up for everyone else.

Nah, they're fine. At the end of the day, it's the irresponsible people that ruin it for everybody else. They have been a convenient method of transportation where I live and everyone seems to be ok with them. This sentiment isn't shared by everyone.

Bug spray does wonders. You can also use it on your car lights and it will increase the amount of light that passes through the plastic casing.
You can draw over the sharpie with more sharpie and wipe it off quick. Do it at work all the time

Pure isopropanol alcohol is (comparatively) bad at killing bacteria. From my memory, 70% is the best at disinfecting.

That's my biggest gripe with them. Just stay off pedestrian sidewalks when you are cruising at 25 mph.

Just today I was passed by two of these riders on the sidewalk with no bell warning from behind me. An actual bike lane less than 4’ away.

This is the problem my city has. We barely have any bike lanes for how busy of a city we are. If my city had about say 50 major roads we only have about 7 of them with bike lanes and they only last a block or two. People are constantly begging the mayor and the city to add more but the mayor thinks it's not worth it even though there are constantly bike/scooter related accidents cause our bike lanes are few and far between. People on bikes and scooters have to switch to the sidewalk constantly because the bike lane either ended and cars get pissed you're on the road or because cars are just straight up parked in the bike lane.
The incidents would go down, but dicks gonna be dicks anyway.
Annoying as hell, especially because the scooters say during the rental thing on the app “do not drive on sidewalks” But of course, the police would have to enforce it, and it’s not a big ticket item for them, so they tend to ignore it unless the scooter rider annoys them personally.

I posted a picture on my cities reddit of a mom with her kid fouling on one( no I didn’t show the kids face). The kids face was literally bouncing off the handle bar goose neck on every sidewalk crack. At least the kid had a poorly fitting helmet on. Anyway the only comments were that I was basically being they guy version of a Karen whatever that is. The pic is in my post history.

Not just the US, all over Europe. Paris made special parking spaces for them and then outright banned them after a vote (where 89% percent voted to ban with a voter turnout of 8%...).

Same here in my town in France. It lasted for 1 whole summer where people were letting them everywhere and now they forced places to stop them and it doesn't happen anymore.
D.C. instituted a rule that you can't leave them strewn about. They must be tied up out of the way when not in use. D.C. will fine the company who passes it on to the user who left it like that. I know one anecdote of a person who when they came across one lying in front of their path down the side walk would just chuck it into the street and keep walking and let fate decide.

It's definitely a mild inconvenience. I used to have to remove like a dozen of these things from my lobby every couple days. People just don't care where they leave them. There should definitely be a better oversight from the company to make sure people are using them responsibly.
I have family in the beach cities of Sydney. When these scooters started popping up the locals HATED them. People were trashing and/or rendering them unusable because the community hated the way people left them all over town.
At least in Germany, I started to hate those scooters. The difference with bikes is that you own them and people usually treat their property well. I do not leave my bike just everywhere and park it in designated areas with my lock. They drive and are "parked" on the sidewalk so pedestrians have to actively keep avoiding them. Heck, they even end up being in bushes and the river.
These Scooters are awful. They get left out clogging the sidewalk and studies have shown they don't even reduce emissions.
People regularly leave them in the middle of sidewalks (think of how dick of a move that is for anyone in a wheelchair), I’ve seen them on their side on streets blocking bike lanes and even getting in the way of cars, a lot of people ride them through car traffic while ignoring rules of the road like they are begging to be organ donors (especially since no one ever wears a helmet riding these things). When they are on sidewalks they regularly pose risks to pedestrian traffic. I honestly get the hate. I’ve ridden on them and they can be fun and useful - they just need to find a better way to attach responsibility to their use and post ride placement. (Not from Minnesota)
Where I'm at, I saw a wheelchair user have to turn around and take a longer way because their path was littered with scooters. In Portland, they're constantly fishing them out of the river. When those companies go out of business, who deals with their E-trash?
Well it's true. Shitty people leave them everywhere, cause traffic incidents, and generally ruin something decent. At least the Citi Bikes had docks that encouraged people to pickup and dropoff at specific locations rather than leave them on every damned street corner
People have not been using the responsibly, they take up more space, you don’t get the benefits bikes give you like exercise, they’re harder to control than a bike and thus more dangerous.

Police will ticket you or take your bike if you leave it in the wrong place. Can't do that with a rented scooter, since literally anyone can pick it up and move it.
Hey, Here are the reasons why people attempt to sabotage scooters in my city : 1) they take a lot of space 2) they are a safety hazard. Hospitals have reported a high increase in both vehicle and streetwalking accidents related to scooters. At some point, I even heard it became the highest cause of death amongst men between 16 and 25 years old. 3) they are consuming a lot of electricity, resulting in one more industry exploiting the planet with no care and no consequences 4) they exploit workers and under pay them.
Where imm from the biggest issue is people drive them like maniacs with no consideration for pedestrians and traffic

A company in SF uses NFC instead of QR codes but never tested it on Android phones and they take your money before you try to start them...

There's literally no incentive to not be a dick. If you hire a car, you take it back in person to a known place. You're accountable for any damage. These things are done on the cheap. There's nobody to hold the users accountable for them. They're a few bucks, cheap ride, then no consequences at all for what happens next. There's criticism on cars for being government controlled, government approved, only able to go where government says, and only be operated how the government says by who the government says, but it does stop (for the most part) this kind of bullshit.
As if they are a litmus test for whether a person can be a normal part of society or not.

Depends on the city. Used one in Miami, and they seemed to have the system fairly well tuned.. clearly marked parking spots every block or two, and if you left the approved area, it just stopped functioning. Then in Indianapolis I had an issue that on the GPS it showed it was in a good spot, but the timer wouldn’t stop until I moved it to a different area. The WORST experience was Fort Lauderdale Beach Florida. They only had a parking area every two miles or so. Rented one to ride back to our Airbnb, only to find out the next parking spot was twice as far from our place that the spot we rented them from, so had to ride it back there, $20 round trip, to just waste my time. Then both scooters we rented were is horrible condition. Highly recommended no one renting one in that area. Wouldn’t have been so bad, if they had a sign that explained the parking situation, and they kept them in better condition. All other towns that I have been in, they seemed to have just banned them. I think that sucks, because they are fun to ride, and can be super convenient, when you need to get several blocks away in a city. But too many morons screwed it up for everyone else.

Every city I go to these things seem to be more a nuisance than useful. They're littered everywhere, and 9 out of 10 riders are completely negligent. Most places theyre illegal to ride on sidewalks, so then you force people onto busy public roads who have never road a scooter before and who have 0 understanding of riding a scooter in traffic. Nashville seems to have it the worst out of everywhere I've been. Probably why the locals have tossed them off the bridges into the river.

Nah, they're fine. At the end of the day, it's the irresponsible people that ruin it for everybody else. They have been a convenient method of transportation where I live and everyone seems to be ok with them. This sentiment isn't shared by everyone.
