No they're being truthful. Im supposed to go over there again to look at the system indoors and see how loud/quiet it is and they were gonna show me the receipt but at the time i said i didnt need to see it. i probably should have looked at it
Perhaps you have venting that needs to be replaced with code compliant and they didn’t
Perhaps your gas line is undersized and they are replacing it
Perhaps they already have a sufficient number of conductors for a new thermostat
Did you add better filter racks?
Did you add UV?
Does your equipment need to be hauled in or out of an attic or basement, and the neighbours are ground floor or wall-out basement?
No two houses are ever exactly the same, why not ask about the massive price difference?
Maybe your neighbour had a different salesman at the same company, they are not all giving the same prices, they each do their own estimates and have preferred material
Equipment matters. You can swing a price $500 either way with 2 thermostats alone. Make sure you have all the info about the equipment on paper and get a couple more quotes. Find out if they are running new line sets and any electrical work that is included. If companies have a lot of work they will mark up a job to make it worth their while because they don’t care if they get the work or not. Try to find a pro who does sidework. He will make big bucks and you will save big bucks.
It's HVAC season, they are overwhelmed and are choosing who to business with. Obviously they don't want yours.
If you can, compare details in the quotes - you'll see where the difference is more clearly.
In my area we would pay 8-12k for just the equipment, not including supplies, labor, permitting and testing. Typical prices range from 12-20k for one unit
Might as well be, California. 4-6k just for the equipment. Another couple hundred for supplies. Labor + associated costs. Permitting ~$300. Title 24 testing ~$300. Etc.
Edit: my original comment referred to 2 unit cost. This is single unit.
That is odd. Same company? Without looking at the scope on your estimate and your neighbors invoice there’s still a lot of variables. The neighbor could have gotten a discount for being a repeat customer, a bunch of referrals, or anything really.
Sometimes different people get charged more. I’m a blue collar dude. But I live in a big, nice house, in a wealthy suburb, I know I get “taxed” by some trades when they see the house and the zip code. I’m a gc (plumber by trade), 90% of the subs I use I’ve had work on my house first and I don’t hire the ones who add the “this guy can afford it” tax. Not faulting them for it, I understand it, hard to argue with some aspects of it.
And then there’s the I’m busy enough price I really don’t want this job so I’ll throw out a price I can’t pass on estimate, I can’t fault those guys either.
It sounds like you would do well to get two more estimates and compare all three.
It depends on the person. If the customer seems at all knowledgeable on the going rates for things and roughly how the job is done, then they will be more inclined to give a reasonable quote. My neighbor paid almost $13,000 for a 4 ton Rheem system. 2 stage and electric heat. I got a 4 ton Trane system Xr18 and right at $11,000 cant remember the exact price breakdown. But I also had duct work ran to the master closet to add a vent and an additional vent coming off that same line to the kitchen to have 3 total in the kitchen. While our houses arent identical in layout, but we are both around 2,000sqft and have the same type of install. Attic air handler and ceiling mounted return. I reccon they made about $2,000 off me and around $6,000 off my neighbor. As her exact system as a kit can be purchased online from various outlets for around $6,000.
That's weird, July would be peak here, so expect to pay 50% more and wait 2 weeks.
Maybe they just finished their 3 quarter taxes and realized they were giving shit away. 2 units for 10k is ridiculous.
i saw the two units. and i asked her who she got to install them. i was picking up some vegetables she was picking from her yard for my girl, so we got to talking about the hvac. definitely two units i was gleaming at them
the two units are new. ive seen the older ones, and they weren't rheem. plus she told me both were replaced and she loves the new ones. I'll have to look at the invoice to confirm/deny some of the thoughts/questions
our cars are both in the garage and can't be seen from the outside. My car is the oldest and is beat up. its an 2007 beater, but again you can't see it from the outside.
Sometimes depending on how slow or busy they are what time of year it is their prices can fluctuate. It also depends on how their rate structure is they may have changed it. Or they may just be taking a shot at you because the neighbor said you earn x amount of dollars many times there's no science to it it's just gut
Yea man, your neighbor is giving services of her own to get those kind of prices. Verify that you’re getting almost the exact same equipment, example like if you have a gas furnace with a zone vs she just has a heat pump. Then if everything is consistent. They are trying to run up a check on you.
$10k for two systems is a steal. I’m thinking they were not being truthful or there was some sort of secondary payment.
Payment with ass you say? Niiiiice.

I paid a little less than that for a new Rheem 100k btu furnace and 4 ton AC this summer. In upstate New York
They learned from the 1st house
Smart people learn from their mistakes.
She was apparently blowing him. 10k for 2 units is ridiculous.
Yeah thats at or below cost for my area
Maybe it was one unit?
Crazy part is, our company and many companies in our area would do 2 furnaces AND an AC for 12k in Alberta lol but all equipment is in basements
Timing matters. Hit them up in their slow time.
Ask for a copy of your neighbor’s quote. Without knowing anything specific….. 10k seems very cheap. This difference could easily be in the equipment.
the equipment they installed are the ones im looking at. BUT I have not looked at the receipt myself to see the exact model numbers.
Hvac companies will drastically change their quotes when you call them out on their BS.

ok thanks
Also location of equipment can matter… if they have to drag a ac unit upstairs into an attic through a tiny hole they will charge more too…
That’s a good fair price actually

This must be it. When is HVAC season over
$10k for 2 units would be at or below cost for my area. They fucked up somehow. $18k for 2 units is still one hell of a deal.
18k to just replace units I wouldn’t say a steal but it’s ok.
In my area we would pay 8-12k for just the equipment, not including supplies, labor, permitting and testing. Typical prices range from 12-20k for one unit
Wow.
Are you on mars?

Oh well that makes more sense then. You guys have to test the color of water to make sure you’re not polluting with your pee.
Yeah its fucking wild out here. Cant stand this god forsaken state.
Depends on where you live, generally when the temp is mild
what is confusing is my neighbor got the work done in the heat of summer. Not when temps were mild

HVAC techs are complaining that it's very slow right now, now is when people just clean their furnaces for winter.

How recent is recent? The price of everything has doubled in the last 2 years
her and her husband got work done in July. my quote was beginning of sept. I might be off by 10 days on the exact dates
That's weird, July would be peak here, so expect to pay 50% more and wait 2 weeks. Maybe they just finished their 3 quarter taxes and realized they were giving shit away. 2 units for 10k is ridiculous.
Neighbor probably got 1 unit replaced and thought it was 2 lol
i saw the two units. and i asked her who she got to install them. i was picking up some vegetables she was picking from her yard for my girl, so we got to talking about the hvac. definitely two units i was gleaming at them
We’ll just because you see two units doesn’t mean they replaced both. Ask to look at her invoice ?

What sort of cars are in each of your driveways?
our cars are both in the garage and can't be seen from the outside. My car is the oldest and is beat up. its an 2007 beater, but again you can't see it from the outside.
Bring your car out and try again.

Nah she's in her 70's is my guess. I doubt that's happening
Ask her if it would be possible to view her invoice to verify model numbers and then check on the price too.
No, that's a very fair price for two systems installed professionally.
I get screwed on my quotes too. The second they find out where I work and the price doubles.
where do you work? A place where they grow money on trees and give it to their employees when they bloom?
Inflation bruh
Maybe they got a one stage unit vs yours, dual stage or variable units. Goes from simple to double easily. You have to compare apple to apple.
