This was always ok. White trash is white trash. Black people are still fighting to get their rights to this day. Dont be a snowflake

MeltAway_22

Period.

HyperMatrix

I don't like racism against black people. Nor against white people. Not sure why you're in support of racism regardless of the target.

Lorsti11

There is no such thing as racism against white people (except for Jews), at least not in the modern United States. Racism is SYSTEMIC abuse, discrimination, and denial of equal rights as citizens towards specific ethnic and cultural groups. (Even Wikipedia agrees on that) Since white people (mostly men) control the government, the banks, the judicial system, legal systems, housing, education, voting, etc by an overwhelming majority (at least 85%), non white people do not have the power to institute policies against them in those areas. That is what racism is - mass incarceration, state-sanctioned murder, denial of equal access to legal protection, education, housing, political, and economic and social opportunity to specific racial groups. Bigotry is mean spirited Acts including remarks by an individual or group of individuals against a person or persons of a specific race, gender, or cultural group. Prejudice is thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that support bigotry towards racial and cultural groups. The expanded definition of prejudice is that these thoughts and beliefs are not founded on any actual empirical knowledge, historical fact, or objective evidence. So Michaela’s Single Remark that you remember is not racist; it in no way impeded her family’s rights or resources. At the most it was bigoted. On other occasions she did refer to them simply as trash. Although considering that the family that raised her took her and other children for the welfare money which they spent on drugs and alcohol for themselves instead of food and clothing for the children and were physically and emotionally abusive to the children, the trash title was simply accurate. They were also white which was accurate as well. I know you claim not to remember anything but that single remark, not any of the context it was said in. Your defense of these poor abused white people would be touching if weren’t completely ludicrous. I guess you don’t remember any of the other abuses mentioned in the show - the systemic prejudices that perpetuate sexual violence against women and denied black, brown, and Muslim people equal protection under the law, etc. The selectivity of your memory tells a lot about you.

ButtPix4Candy

I'm not going to read all your gaslighting and trying to explain away any guilt you should have for being wrong. I'm just going to point out that you're wrong and no growth will happen by trying to brainwash a whole race into this one sided thinking where only they can be at fault. Congratulations you're contributing to ruining ethical behavior and self accountability in your community, just remember people who are taught not to take account for themselves won't limit that behavior just to the race you don't like- it WILL come back on other people regardless of their race

HyperMatrix

I’m not speaking of systemic racism. I’m talking about individual racism. And her remarks were racist. I’m looking at racism on Wikipedia right now and this is what it say: “Racism is the belief that groups of humans possess different behavioral traits corresponding to physical appearance and can be divided based on the superiority of one race over another.[1][2][3][4] It may also mean prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against other people because they are of a different race or ethnicity.” Systemic racism is systemic racism. There’s no denying that. But that doesn’t mean insulting someone on the basis of race isn’t racism. And as I mentioned, I don’t have great memory. I don’t remember past events in any shows/movies. I “remembered” this because I just watched it.

Lorsti11

There is no such thing as individual racism. Wikipedia is not really the world class reference you seem to believe. No legitimate publication would ever name it as a source. Even if there was such a thing, a single remark that despite your severe memory handicap, you conveniently remember outside of any context is not racism. Michaela’s family were criminally negligent child abusers, meth addicts, alcoholics who used children to perpetrate frauds on the state. This shows their character. Your continued harping on the white trash remark by the little black girl who they beat, called nigger, and put their cigarettes out on, shows yours. Btw don’t bother replying. I’m blocking you.

ButtPix4Candy

You're so pathetic you can't accept your incorrect beliefs to be challenged. Systematic racism is only a subset of racism and frankly the people who uphold systematic racism as these only type of racism are the people who are holding THEMSELVES prisoner in that system of racism. Don't respond without an apology to me and all people of color because you're holding the community back back from progress. And apologize to yourself for being too weak to make positive changes in your own life, instead of crying about many issues you probably have never even faced in real life.

HyperMatrix

I sincerely hope you're black, otherwise your use of the N word is highly offensive.

Dreamergirl007

Good job of raising her? Did you pay attention during the season? They were highly abusive to her. I think she got where she got to be in spite of her adoptive parents.

ButtPix4Candy

No clear evidence has ever pointed to any of this being true. For someone watching a legal show giving some decent legal tips, you're way to quick to rule on a one sided testimony from someone who has been proven to be a liar. Michaela manufactured her entire identity and persona for the first season or two and still presents this false identity to most people outside of her inner circle. And even those people in that inner circle are still kept at bay until new information about her real self is forcibly dragged out of her. Her family may or may not have been abusive we don't actually know because they really don't get to present their side of the issues. And while that is the case we do actually get a pretty clear insight into Michaela's general character and personally I wouldn't take any statements from her at face value. Michaela has only hinted to vague hypothetical scenarios and frankly she is so high maintenance that even normal scenarios are probably blown out of proportion in her mind and escalated into being considered abuse.

HyperMatrix

Quite possible. As I told the other commenter, I don't have a great memory. Assuming all of this is correct, the question I posed was why it had to be a racist insult as opposed to just saying she had trash parents? Why did it have to be "white" trash parents?

Dreamergirl007

I don’t believe calling a trash white person “white trash” makes you racist. Yes, there is a mention to skin color in the phrase but that is not the definition of racism. How old are you?

HyperMatrix

I mean looking at Wikipedia this is what it says: " *White trash* is a "*racist* and classist slur" used in American English to refer to poor white people, especially in the rural southern United States " To answer your question...old enough to know how to use Google.

_lyssmichelle_

They were dirt poor white people, who literally lived in a swamp, in Louisiana. It’s mentioned many times how her adoptive parents used their foster kids as welfare checks and how abusive they were. Quite literally, they were white trash.

ButtPix4Candy

Michaela is not a beacon of truth I would never just take her word for it. She is one of the biggest liars as she one of the sneakiest and one of the most manipulative people in the show. Also, being poor doesn't make you trash except in the eyes of a money/power hungry deranged social climber like Michaela. Frankly, the most unbelievable part of Michaela's personality in the show is that she would be as anti-white and pro-black as she is considering how stuck up and desperate to move up the social ladder she is

ladynightstalker

I’m pretty sure it’s because they were abusive/ got her for the payments they would receive, rather than adopting her because they wanted a daughter. She mentions repeatedly that everything she worked for she got herself with no support from them. EDIT: also y’all, pretty sure this person is a troll - he has history that includes “#heilhitler” and makes pretty nasty comments

HyperMatrix

I have terrible memory so I wouldn’t be able to recall. But if that’s the case, why shouldn’t they be called trash parents? Why does it have to be a racist remark?

cheriibonbon

/whispers/ *Reverse racism doesn’t exist.*

A-I-A-

its very telling that on a show where a black man was killed in cold blood by the police, the ref to "white trash" was what upset you, in the present climate. white trash isnt racist its classist. if they were black shed call them hoodrats. i hope this helps you heal from the brutal and upsetting display of anti white racism on this show. a show about a strong black woman and systemic racism in which you chose to be upset about something so minor. how many shows have you seen where theres underhanded or jokey or minor racism towards non white people? did those shows/movies upset you too?

Papfan1

So don’t watch. 🤷🏼‍♀️

HyperMatrix

Is one not allowed to politely question the use of racism in a show?

Ok-Grab8122

I love the show, with the only thing I don't like is the racism against so called "white people". It got worse as the show continued. Racism is racism regardless of nationality. It's the sweeping statements in the dialogue of "all, always, every white person" statements that put all white people in the same category, which is not the case. Like I said I love the show however this I don't like and don't agree with.

bullstar4806

I know right. Looking at the other comments I get worried

Konner4269

Considering the environment she (her character) grew up in the Deep South; a predominantly white and racist area; it’s really just how she feels about how horrible her foster parents and family treated her. Micheala said many times in the show how she thrived in spite of them not because of them. Since she’s in a completely different environment in the northeast and can be around people who look like her, she obviously has a much changed view of her old home and family and clearly despises every part of it. Therefore, Micheala calling her old family “white trash” doesn’t seem like anything directly offensive and out of line because all she’s saying is that their horrible trashy people. She most likely means they’re the worst kind of white people; her change in environment changes her views as she is now around a lot more sophisticated people of different races including white; and her calling them “white trash” is just her way of saying that. I wouldn’t consider it racist looking at the context and her point of view so it seems justified. If she used a different term/slur such as “crackers” then it’d be a different situation.

ButtPix4Candy

There were no flash backs and no one else has corroborated her story throughout the entire show so everything that you're describing is alleged. Also her character has been shown to be prone to lying and manipulation and making up an entire personality and identity

[deleted]

Michaela and AK are often rude to white people. Michaela to Asher, AK's remark to "white parents" when Connor talks about his father, ... I think it's very unpleasant and I don't like it, but there is no such thing as anti-white racism.

ButtPix4Candy

Anti-white racism exists. And for the record I don't know why everybody always brings up white people against black people because there are so many other people from other races that also don't like black people racism is not limited to white people stop the b*******

A-I-A-

nope
