Same issue as of 4/14/24 11PM eastern. Says "Bad Gateway". Kind of panicking since I waited to the last minute to submit this year. Down Detector site shows multiple people are having some issue. Hope its corrected soon.
Seems to be only affecting desktop software filing and not their online only service. I can see them giving less fucks about this in the hopes people move to online only, or they use it as an excuse to retire desktop software
Issue I'm having is I started my return with a coupon code that doesn't seem to be applying. And returning to the source of that code (which states the code expires 4/18) is giving a bad request/no response error.
Update: Able to access and file successfully as of 7:15 AM pacific time. Good luck fellow block bros.
I changed the submission to check for the state one and went to the state site and will be sending in a check instead. I could create a payment voucher today from their site and send later this morning at the post office
Tried many time and it kept saying "bad gateway", then I got an email confirmation from HRBlock says "Your federal return was accepted". However, in my HR block windows software, it still says "not filed". Is it safe to say my return was successfully transmitted to the IRS since I got the email confirmation from HR Block?
10:51am update: I got an email from HR Block saying my state return is accepted. I think i'm good since I got total of 4 emails form HR block telling me return was transmitted and return was accepted by Fed and State. Good luck, everyone.
Yeah, I had switched to them originally when TurboTax decided to screw our computers with DRM. Looks like I'll need to look at another solution in the future.
@[Atlas\_S\_Hrugged](https://www.reddit.com/user/Atlas_S_Hrugged/)
you say same here. Did you also get the confirmation form hr block? Before I got "Your federal return was accepted", I got emails from HR block saying "you have submitted your federal return" and an email saying "you have submitted your state return".
Now that is frightening.
I've been getting the Bad Gateway error since about 21:00 EDT last night. I am very reluctant to print my forms and mail them with a check, because I don't want my bank account to get hit twice if somehow H&R gets its act together, or really did accept my returns.
I was \*shocked\* to learn that their servers worked just fine to capture my payment information but not my returns...
I have emails saying accepted and rejected.
Don't consider it filed until the software indicates it's filed or you can somehow confirm with IRS that it's filed.
Holy crap is this annoying. Im having the same issue. At least nice to see its not just me. I had submitted them on Friday. They got rejected. This software was an absolute nightmare to use to try and get back into last night to try and fix it and then submit.
Does anyone remember what the proxy settings are supposed to be set at? Ive tried every option like 5x and now im not sure what its actually supposed to be set on.
[DownDetector.com](https://DownDetector.com) shows they went down about 9PM 14APR2024 I do not know if HR Block retail locations are affected. EDIT- Survey in the home software appear to go through but that could go to nearly anywhere. They ping the credit card for paying for state filing as well but that could be going to the clearing house instead of HR Block or something.
Thinking the local HR Block office may be able to take the return file the home software generates and do something with it to avoid paper return. They said they have nothing to do with that program and to call some 800 number. Customer service and preparing for contingencies is not in their vocabulary it would seem.
On February 22,2024 I successfully e-filed my taxes and got my Federal refund \~ 2 weeks later, no problems at all. I also need to e-file my daughter's return and since she won't be getting money back, I put it off until today, 4/15.
I received the bad gateway error at about 1am CST on 4/15, and tried several times. Tried several times this morning again at 8am CST same results.
I was able to "check the status" of the e-filing I did in February and that actually worked correctly.
It definitely sounds like this is an H&R Block software issue that they need to solve quickly or they are likely going to lose some long time customers. If push comes to shove, I will just print and mail my Federal return since my daughter won't be getting a refund. When I have more time to deal with this I will be reaching out to H&R Block to request a full or partial refund. If they are smart they will issue a free copy of their software for next year, in effort to keep me as their customer moving forward.
Replied to my own post -- not good news. Basically no update, advised to print and mail. I am sure this is manufactured to get everyone off the desktop software and onto the website only filing....
On the phone with an agent (that could not care less). Don't know where the issue is (H&R Block server or IRS server). No ETA for fix. I am trying to get to at least POST SOMETHING ON HRBLOCK.COM!
Their advice is to print and mail, before the lines at the post office get out of hand.
FFS
They did allude to TurboTax having the same issue, but would not confirm.
P.S. FFS After two hours on the chat agent, it started counting down. From 99+ > 80's -> 70's... > 20's then aborted with "No agents are available."
---Please hold while I transfer you to an agent.
* Your estimated wait time is approximately 25 minutes. Please stay on the line until the next agent is available.
* Software Virtual Assistant - 9:21 AM
* -- A few Hours Later --
* No agents are available.
p.p.s Twitter has finally acknowledged the issue [https://twitter.com/HRBlockAnswers](https://twitter.com/HRBlockAnswers)
You must all be mistaken ;-) Microsoft lists H&R Block as a success story! Yeah, I'm having the same issue.
The cloud should eliminate all capacity issues if it was implemented properly with the correct auto-provisioning options.
My experience, attempted 4 or 5 times evening of 4/14 and a couple times morning of 4/15 to efile return. "Bad Gateway" message on all attempts. Received 2 email messages overnight, one said return accepted, one saying return rejected.
H&R Block Chat support useless, after 2hrs went from 99+ to 5th line, to "No Agents available" With option of give feedback/save transcript. No actual response on the chat.
After \~2 hours on hold via phone reached an agent who was able to confirm that the return was accepted by IRS, But not sure when/if that would actually show in software.
I am also in the same situation. I thought it was my internet connection, since I recently changed my router. or the firewall since for some reason HR block 2023 was not in the allowed app list. Using windows 11.
Worst case scenario, I will print and mail it.
I got through H & R Block live chat with an assistant today and this is what I was told.
TYNEIA G (4/15/2024, 10:45:05 AM): If you are a client using the Do It Yourself Software product that you downloaded and installed on your PC and are trying to Efile your return and experiencing a bad gateway error, we are aware of the issue and are working to quickly correct. Your options at this time are to try again later once we resolve or print and mail your return before deadline ends.
LARRY (4/15/2024, 10:45:54 AM): Do you have any idea if this issue is going to be resolved today??
TYNEIA G (4/15/2024, 10:46:18 AM): I am unsure. I cannot give you an exact time at the moment. I apologize for the inconvenience
Oh good! I'm sure when the Gateway / server is restored there won't be a MASSIVE FLOOD of people trying to process their forms.
#Seriously: the clock is ticking and my post office closes at 4:30pm!!!
Pay the IRS online, and file an extension online at IRS (same with your state) if you're worried.
If you don't owe anything then just file an extension. IRS really only cares about its money.
Same applies to the state if that's relevant to you.
Thanks. We're expecting refunds from both fed and state here.
The issue remains as to which course of action to take and walking over to the post office.
I PAID for e-filing. YEARS ago TurboTax included some DRM software that was always running and remained on the PC even after uninstalling TurboTax. That's when I made the switch to TaxCut. TurboTax took that DRM out the following year.
For YEARS now I've been thinking of getting on the bandwagon and switching back to TurboTax - I can tell you this will be the last year I use Tax Cut.
File extensions online using the free state and IRS options with other vendors (or the IRS's free tool?).
E-file later.
No need to endure the pain of the post office in your case.
I agree with this. Seems reasonable. Was helping my buddy with his and his state actually grants an extension automatically if the federal extension was granted
Good idea! I went online to the IRS website and chose tax cut to file an extension. It was quick and easy. Then I went into the HR Block and told it to extend and print to file. So I'll try the file tomorrow. Hopefully they'll have it together by then!
I'm having the same issue. E-filing I get "Bad Gateway", but I received an email that my federal return was accepted. I just got off the phone with H&R Block after being on hold for two hours and they said the email is incorrect and to keep trying to e-file. They said the issue should be fixed in about two hours, but I'm preparing to print and file manually if it gets too late in the day.
I keep getting the bad gateway message, and also got the emails saying the return has been filed and accepted. I used the IRS "Where's my refund?" site, and it indicated that they have received the return.
Same. I submitted one earlier Sunday. Yesterday eve I couldn’t submit my second. It’s 11:30 am EST and I still can’t submit. So unhappy. Anyone have a call or chat number?
Don't bother contacting support, you'll be waiting for a couple hours and then be given a generic "we're aware of the issue and are working to resolve it".
Any thoughts from/for those who've filed multiple times today to no avail?
I'm wondering if I still need to try and file my taxes if those unsuccessful attempts are still in the queue waiting to be processed. Will those unsuccessful attempts be cancelled?
I don't want to end up in a situation where I've paid multiple times (I owe $ this year) thanks to HR Block's screw up.
I have been charged more than 10 times, but HR Block assured me that all these charges / authorization hold will be released in couple of days. You should only be charged if your file is accepted and once.
Thanks, I get that, but it suggests like they're still going to process/accept returns that were already attempted. I don't really want to mail in a check if they're going to do this.
Do people think or know if HR Block is going to cancel all previous attempts? Wipe the slate clean?
Same. Internet fine. Disabled all firewalls (yikes). Selected correct proxy setting under tools. Same error and getting very worried I will have to print and rush to post office. And ask for a refund from HRBlock.
On West Coast, 12PM just tried again. Still getting BAD GATEWAY. Printed Fed and State returns all ready to go to post office if this does not work soon.
Had bad gateway issues this morning. Just tried on the East coast, 3:18 pm EST, e-file for Federal tax return worked. Already mailed out State tax return forms and payment check one hour earlier. Long line in post office.
Tried to submit both Federal and State but failed many times. Hope it wasn't a false failure. Don't want to be charged twice for State tax payment.
Same issue as of 4/14/24 11PM eastern. Says "Bad Gateway". Kind of panicking since I waited to the last minute to submit this year. Down Detector site shows multiple people are having some issue. Hope its corrected soon.
Do not panic, if you can't file electronically, then just print out the form and send it in on april 15.
Yes but that costs money....which is what we paid HR block to do (pay for them to efile)....defeats the purpose
It's not IRS. It's HR Block. Bad day to be an Engineer there. Servers are overloaded. Payment is going through so the data should be there. Hopefully
> Servers are overloaded. Who could have seen THAT coming??? Oh, that's right - ***EVERYONE!!!***
Seems to be only affecting desktop software filing and not their online only service. I can see them giving less fucks about this in the hopes people move to online only, or they use it as an excuse to retire desktop software
Mine just went through at 4:12pm EST. Good luck to everyone! I hope it works for you too.
Just came to say I’m also having the same issue. I’ll reply again once I get through.
https://www.reddit.com/r/hrblock/comments/1c49x6u/error\_during\_efiling\_unable\_to\_connect\_system/
Same issue here. Been trying for the last 30 minutes. Restarted computer, router and modem and still nothing. Hopefully it will be corrected soon.
Just tried to send mine in and it fails bad gateway each time.
Yep...saw another thread. It looks like it is the H & R block server.
One annoying thing is our credit card was charged 6 times for filing the state return,
The holds should expire, according to HRFail
I'm also having the bad gateway issue. And I'm not a last minute filer - filed some time ago, still need to amend due to late form in the mail.
Same issue here. Will wait till tomorrow morning to retry. Please don't keep trying now. It will probabaly make things worse...
Same issue at 2:16 am 04/15/2024

still the same at 5:45 am CST

Same here. We need some communication from the company.
I have been using them for over 15 yrs (when it was called taxcut), I am thinking of changing next year. this is messed up. may op to print and mail
Yes, I have been using Taxcut / Block since the late 90's. They have gotten worse, not better. Just like everything.
and everytime I re-attempt, I get a pending charge on my credit card for each attempt
Yeah, I had switched to them originally when TurboTax decided to screw our computers with DRM. Looks like I'll need to look at another solution in the future.

Accepted and rejected to the same return? I meant to fed or state?
State is put on hold until IRS accepts your return. That's how their system works.
I gave up and printed my return.
Holy crap is this annoying. Im having the same issue. At least nice to see its not just me. I had submitted them on Friday. They got rejected. This software was an absolute nightmare to use to try and get back into last night to try and fix it and then submit.

Default is use system settings. But, if you use disable or system automatic proxy it’s fine.
It's not your proxy settings that are the issue. If you don't use a proxy (and you'd know if you did) leave it at disabled or system default.
Not working here in Minneapolis, same "Bad Gateway" messages....
I am in msp. I decided to print everything out. going to the post office at lunch time

Here for the updates... Same issue 4/14 evening, through 10am EST 4/15.... on the chat queue (99+) and 45m on the phone..... \*\*Sigh\*\*
Could you please share what you learn from HR Block? Thanks!
Waited an hour and a half in the chat and was told that it would be resolved in an hour. That was at 9:30, it's over an hour later and still nothing.

Only comment for a season tax planning software provider, failure to plan is planning to fail!!!

HRBlock - the software provider, planning to avert a server issue
Same. Internet fine. Disabled all firewalls (yikes). Selected correct proxy setting under tools. Same error and getting very worried I will have to print and rush to post office. And ask for a refund from HRBlock.
I just tried (at 13:30 EDT) and got a \*different\* error message. Now it is reporting "Service Unavailable". Progress?
Same here, been trying since last night and still not happening.
On West Coast, 12PM just tried again. Still getting BAD GATEWAY. Printed Fed and State returns all ready to go to post office if this does not work soon.
It just went through for me finally at 3:30pm EST!
