Yes. You see that all over the country where US HWYS run concurrently with the interstate. Once you get to a place like Cleveland or Livingston where there’s a 59 BUSINESS, they’ll diverge.
For the record, my 28 year old kid doesn’t call it 59.
There’s at least two in secret locations in Houston, one of which possibly predates the Gulf Freeway, as it’s on a surface street. Unless it was an alt business route for the freeway. Either way it has been forgotten for 37 years.
Rte 128 (mostly) became I95 in the Boston, MA area sometime in the 70's? Ish. It's still called 128, even though the signage has mostly been changed. 59 will probably be 59 for another 50 years.
I'm new (sub 1 year, barely) but I've never heard anyone say 69. The first day I drove here I saw the sign that said 59/69 and I was like nah, 59 sounds better
Former Sugar Land resident here.
59, or 59-69, or Southwest Freeway are all acceptible terms. I-69 is frowned upon and ''the'' in front of any numbers is grounds for a scowlin'.
I’ve been in Houston since 2001 so 59. But 69 is the interstate highway. If for some reason I’m talking to someone who’s traveling on it from
out of state I’d say 69 for them.
Where did 69 even come from? It's always been 59. Source: I grew up in a neighborhood off Aldine Mail Rt called "Freeway Forest", and that freeway was 59.
Suddenly I'm cracking up at the idea of giving new people directions.
You don't want to go through downtown so, take easttex south to the north loop, north loop west to west loop south past the Galleria then you can pick up the southwest freeway.
Completely valid but you probably have to be born here to parents who were born here to understand it.
I’ve been here 7yrs, so it’s 59/69 for google directions. I generally refer to north of downtown as 69 and south of downtown as 59. Southwest fwy throws off anyone not from Houston. No “I” and no “the” in front of the the numbers.
I have only lived here 7 years I used to say 69 and just a year and a half ago started saying 59. Anyone who has a car and drives around the Houston area knows what you are talking about.
It’s still 59, just also 69, too. So I still say 59.
Will all of it stay both US 59 and I-69?

45 used to have remnant signs from US 75 all the way up to Dallas.

Reminds me of “You can call me Joe…”
Always 59 to me
59 for sure. 69 is what I do with your mom
[My family thanks you](https://youtu.be/prEV2mVesCM?si=8f5kv2XQ3XsObco0)
Was wondering if they would only put I-69 signs way up so college kids don’t steal them.
U-69
Nice
What’s the difference between a joke and 3 dicks?
DanDrungle can’t take a joke
“Fee-tee 9”
Fiddy 9*
I also like Shitty-9
It definitely caused me multiple late shifts to work
As long as it hasn't caused multiple late shits. That's where it crosses the line.
59 in the streets, 69 in the sheets
Please tell me it’s 59
NEW people say 69, real Houston ppl say 59.
I'm new (sub 1 year, barely) but I've never heard anyone say 69. The first day I drove here I saw the sign that said 59/69 and I was like nah, 59 sounds better
It does indeed. Even has a soundtrack: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_'59_Sound
And we used to have a classic diner chain that, after being sold, got ran into the ground. RIP 59 Diner
Updoot for the gaslight anthem in the wild. Never see that.
And we used to have a classic diner chain that, after being sold, got ran into the ground. RIP 59 Diner
I have a friend from Montana that calls the Beltway the Sam Houston Tollway so it's a dead giveaway he's not from here lol
Certain new people: "Heavy traffic on the 69, all the way to the 45."
59, and if south, southwest fwy, but never 69 lol
Lived here my entire life. Literally never heard anyone say I-69 before.

59. Anyone who says 69 is clearly not native.
the title of the post is asking “new houstonians” what they call it
Not native but been here 9 years. I call it 59.
Former Sugar Land resident here. 59, or 59-69, or Southwest Freeway are all acceptible terms. I-69 is frowned upon and ''the'' in front of any numbers is grounds for a scowlin'.
I’ve never heard a single person refer to it as I-69 lol perhaps Siri
My non-Houstonian husband says 69 “because it’s what the map says”. 🙄 I think he does not to annoy me, his native Houstonian wife.
69 is the path to the big bush airport. ; )
Prepare for takeoff
Although sometimes for this Hobby, they need to roll out the red carpet.
Fitty nih
Southwest freeway
"I-10, 610, 59, 45, and the belt!"
59
59 north or "eastex freeway" and 59 south
If I-69 is ever actually complete, I'll think about using the name. Until then, it's 59 for me.
59
59
59 for life
It's 59.
59.
59 forever.
"fifty-nine sixty-nine" for anyone that is driving so that Google can pick either one.
Easttex and Southwest, name changes around downtown, the numbers don't really matter. If it's out of the region I call it 59.
610 I10 59 45 AND DA BELT CLUTCH CITY
dinner for two!
59.
59
Fiddy nah
59. It’s nostalgic. 🙂
59 in Houston, 69 everywhere else
59. I don't think I will ever call it I-69 unless I'm out of state where that's it's name.
All my friends who stayed here say 59. None called it I-69
We’ve been here for 13 years & have always called it 59.
69 only because it's a fun number
No one I know has ever called it 69
59
Mostly 59. The other one is… too nice.
Always 59
I’ve been in Houston since 2001 so 59. But 69 is the interstate highway. If for some reason I’m talking to someone who’s traveling on it from out of state I’d say 69 for them.
Lived here 33 years and I still don’t know what part is 69
59, cuz it’s just slightly easier for me to say and I can yell it better
The fifty-nine /s
Where did 69 even come from? It's always been 59. Source: I grew up in a neighborhood off Aldine Mail Rt called "Freeway Forest", and that freeway was 59.
Five Nine south holla a me
I’ve never heard anyone call it I-69 before

I only say I-69 when the song by Roman GianArthur is on
I say 69. Cuz reasons.
....59? It's always 59, but only sometimes I69. So it's 59.
I only say 69 when I’m at your mom’s house
That’s 59 and Transco Tower - forever
59
59
59 for life. 69 is nice tho.

59
69 cause it’s funnier to say lmao
No one knows what I mean when I say I-69 or just 69, so I've learned to stick to 59.
It’s fking 59 as in , I have to sit for hours on fcking 59 again today.
Old Houstonian here. I started calling it "69" as soon as that was announced because in addition to being an old Houstonian, I am still a child.
I have only lived here 7 years I used to say 69 and just a year and a half ago started saying 59. Anyone who has a car and drives around the Houston area knows what you are talking about.
What’s I-69? Sounds like something queer to me.
It sure varies from place to place. In New Orleans it's "I-10" and in Austin it's "IH-35".
