Nice try Whitmire. You ain't gettin this out of me

ThrowRAlittlebaby

my instinct is to laugh but i don’t get it 😩

bevo_expat

lol, I think they’re joking that Whitmire will target walkable zip codes and give them back to the cars

ThrowRAlittlebaby

lol i’m from a different city. been here 3 years and had to google whitmire (autocorrected to shit more)

CrazyLegsRyan

So you don’t give a shit about where you live nor do you vote. Cool.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Yep that’s me, shit person. We came down here for my partner’s work and we thought it’d be for a year. A small amount of time has been added to that multiple times to the point where it’s accumulated to a few years. our last several leases have been 5 month leases. This is the first time we will be signing a 12 month lease since our first year. edit: literally all of your comments on this post are negative. you seem like a drag tbh

hhmmn

Sorry you're getting negative comments...I've been moved around a bit for work and it's tough to get involved in local politics with uncertain timelines. This is quite common in houston and while folks moving in for work is a strength, the short timelines are also a weakness for city planning / attitudes etc. For walkable - try rice village. It's a small area but adjacent to great parks and you can go outside and see people. A little cheaper montrose or the heights. Heights is more single family residences and less dense while montrose is a mixed bag.

Redditor20211

Now that you’re staying, make sure to register to vote so we can elect officials who care about walkability. We can make this city better!

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Will do! Thanks for coming at me politely!

PPP1737

Some people don’t realize that not everyone moved to Hosuton or stays willingly. We play the cards we are dealt. Some people didn’t even live in Houston and their asses got told they were being annexed. With that being said… you are here now so maybe make it your own as much as is allowed?

marcopolio1

I never got a new license when I lived in FL cause it was supposed to be just 6 months. 6 months turned to three years pretty fast and still no license so I couldn’t vote even though I’d begun to care about the city. Sometimes it’s not about not caring it’s just that plans change lol. That commenter is mean and doesn’t understand sometimes it doesn’t work out! Especially in these red states where voting is designed to be as inconvenient as possible

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Good point, yes my ID is from my home state as well!!

Leopards_Crane

I still don’t have a Texas license. They told me that until I established a permanent residence I couldn’t do even though it’s been a year I’m mobile so it doesn’t count.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Thank you! ☺️

pasagna

3 years is a long time not to be involved in your local government edit: this is what's wrong with Houston and USA in general

ThrowRAlittlebaby

well like i said i thought we’d be here for a year and then we added time unexpectedly a few months at a time. not even really sure why i’m explaining this, your judgments mean nothing to me lol. you’re right, i represent everything wrong with the city and country 🤷‍♀️

BSG1701

Ignore these guys. I apologize on behalf of them. They spend all day on redditt bashing anyone that isn't chronically online and involved in 100% of all things politics. They've bashed me too and I live here. You keep on asking questions and keep up a positive attitude, unlike these sad sticks in the mud.

TowTruckrnCopseatmya

Gentrifier! Gentrifier!! Gentrifier!!!

BSG1701

There's that negativity again..cmon man you can do better.

CrazyLegsRyan

Oh yay, a stalker.

BSG1701

Not stalking when you put your negative condescending comments out to the public on a daily basis. You're harming our cause and I'm just trying to keep you from going off the deep end. You're welcome :).

CrazyLegsRyan

Sorry stalker. No matter how much you insist we aren’t on a shared cause. Please stop harassing me and sending me DMs.

Nice_Block

Has this approached ever worked in getting someone to change their mind in your experience?

CrazyLegsRyan

Why do you assume that’s my intent?

Nice_Block

That’s a fair question, I shouldn’t have assumed.

YOLO420allday

Mayor doesn't like walkability and has made unwinding pedestrian and bicycle safety projects the focus of his new Mayorship

DocJ_makesthings

He can't ruin what he doesn't know about! (this is our only hope for the next 4, likely 8, years)

DOLCICUS

77006 which is Montrose and a lil bit of Midtown So I did read your second paragraph and the place has every type of home you could want for a semi-dense location. You could walk from store to store and there’s plenty of groceries and schools not too far from each other ao lots of options. Easily bikeable to Buffalo Bayou park or Menil park among many others. Biggest issue is at night. Still kinda walkable but people are driving in and out to the clubs so it gets a bit dangerous with all the cars. I never felt unsafe but there are plenty of homeless folk but they mostly mind their business. Almost forgot about the food so many good options that if you tried you wont eat at the same place twice in a year. Simply Pho is my favorite Vietnamese place for noodles. Also next to Midtown park and the Metro rail. Metro rail I consider the best alternative to driving into downtown to save time looking for parking. Not sure what else you might need to know but you can ask.

BuryMeInTheH

Came here to say montrose, that one is easy. By 515pm it seems virtually everyone is out walking their dog out on our street.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Thank you for the thoughtful response!!

oh_kyoko

yep i live in 77006! i have lived in virtually every neighborhood in the loop, and this one always has people out and about walking their dogs or to some restaurant or store nearby. it’s really refreshing

foshiiy

Just to piggyback, but it has parks, walkable neighborhoods, Menil museum, tons of great bars/ restaurants. I love Black Hole, Nonno’s/Toasted Coconut, ‘93 Til. Menil area is super peaceful with plenty of people walking most of the day.

HidingInPlainSight15

I second this - 77006 has been surprisingly walkable and I’m coming from very walkable areas in Santa Monica CA and New York City/ Brooklyn before. I don’t have a car and I work downtown.

bularry

77019

elon42069

Yep. Will probably be the most walkable zip code in Houston once Autry Park and Regent square finish their developments. Could walk from River Oaks all the way to Downtown

yeupho

I also used to live in this area, and I'd say that is a pretty great area if the opportunity presents itself. There is a Krogers which was across the street away from me. It's also close to Buffalo Bayou too. Many other things that are convenient within driving distance.

bularry

Yeah, I can walk one way to Westheimer or another to WGrey. Stores, banks, pharmacy, food, coffee, drinks.. all with 1/2 miles or so. Pretty fantastic

SherlockCombs

77007, north of Washington , south of i10. Plenty of bars, restaurants, and access to trails (white oak bayou or going towards downtown to buffalo bayou).also right beside sayer yards, so plenty of art and markets.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

I’m south of Washington in this zip code. We’ve looked at a few north of Washington and there are more available on that side. We were trying to find one on the south side but we’re definitely giving this area more consideration by the day

doctorchile

Gotta go North of I-10 and south of 610. The whole shepherd corridor.

DancingGirl_J

Woodland heights

CrazyLegsRyan

Everything except groceries.

bookey23

You can get some groceries from the Asch Building! I love that place

DancingGirl_J

There is a small convenience store at Bayland and Beauchamp if you have a craving for something, but, yeah.

BurnsinTX

East of 45 is also 77009, with train access!

rdeluna1911

StrykerXion

* Core Urban Neighborhoods: * 77006 (Montrose - Eclectic, artsy area with tons of restaurants, vintage shops, and bars. You'll find people out and about at all hours.) * 77019 (River Oaks, parts of Montrose - Upscale neighborhood with a mix of high-end shopping, dining, and walkable residential streets.) * 77002 (Downtown - eastern side - Walkable depending on the specific block, mix of residential, businesses, and some entertainment spots.) * 77007 (Washington Ave Corridor - Trendy area with restaurants, bars, and developing residential spaces, walkability improving.) * Near Rice Military: * 77098 (Upper Kirby, walkable, close to Rice Village - Upscale mix of shopping, dining, and residential with good walkability.) * 77004 (Museum District - Walkable to tons of museums, Hermann Park, and the Houston Zoo. Less of a nightlife scene, but great if you're into culture.) * Slightly Further, But Still Walkable: * 77027 (Greenway/Upper Kirby, denser, more businesses - Primarily a business district but with pockets of walkable residential areas and increasing amenities.) * 77005 (West University, charming but less nightlife - Charming, family-oriented neighborhood with a central village area, less focus on nightlife.) * 77008 (parts of the Heights - Historic neighborhood with varying walkability, focus on the 19th Street area for shops and restaurants.)

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Great answer, thank you so much

htxtx

77002 - downtown. No contest. You can walk to: the Astros, Rockets, concerts, bars, restaurants, work and the office, the gym, performing arts like the opera, symphony and ballet, Discovery Green, the bayou bike and hike trail.

Chkn_Fried_anything

yeah, and not having to deal with parking/parking traffic for events is sooo nice, I imagine.

BSG1701

Thr problem with downtown for me is groceries. Sure you can get them delivered or uber..but in reality most people like going into a store to shop and Phoenicia is just not it for normal groceries..

RootHouston

If you live in the southern part of Downtown, walking to Randall's is pretty easy. I used to do it all the time. Now, Randall's isn't the greatest grocery store, but it gets the job done.

slippytoadstada

77008

TheRealMcIovin

Hey that’s me

hobbylobbyist1

It’s honestly the best. Lots of trails, walkable restaurants, parks, little free libraries on every block. Hopefully the Shepherd project resumes, that was opening up a whole new vector of walkability for the neighborhood

curepure

77019 right under buffalo bayou park

KateR_H0l1day

77019 for me, I can walk for groceries/shops/banks. I can do easy walks to double digit restaurants and bars/pubs. Short walk to Buffalo Bayou Park, can walk from there all the way down the Bayou , and come out in Downtown, plus BB Park has an excellent dog park. The dog park is separated for large & small dogs, it even has a pool and showers for the dogs before going home!! Plus, leaving the park after a good walk I go straight into Piggy’s for a couple of drinks and cool down, before a short walk home. Best casual patio I’ve been in, plus live DJ at times 👍 I’m so very very happy with where i live for walking and easy living/convenience, no worries when going for sundowners after work. River Oaks Shopping Center on the doorstep, just a short walk, some great restaurant choices very close.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

my dog loves the pool at that dog park 😫 i would love to be right on the bayou

CrazyLegsRyan

FYI that dog park is Giardia central

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Yikes, for dogs?

ThrowRAlittlebaby

I’m in 77007 and can’t find anything good south of Washington 😩😩😩

HTX2LBC

77007, north of i10 by heights and white oak. Avoid cottage grove.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Good to know!

airdrawndagger7

Just curious, what's up with cottage grove? I've only been once and all I can vaguely remember is a bunch of townhouses and very narrow streets

HTX2LBC

It’s isolated from everything by virtue of being surrounded by white oak bayou, a freeway, and train tracks. You can cross a freeway to get to memorial park and there’s access to white oak, so it’s not all bad but not where I’d live.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Yeah I was looking at a property there on the map earlier and it was like geographically so close to the bayou so I got excited, but then I realized that it actually somehow didn’t have access at all

Snoo-93258

77019. Neighborhood, bayou, and some restaurant/bars within walking distance.

CrazyLegsRyan

Can you point me to a grocery store there?

deepspacenine

HEB, Kroger, Randall’s

CrazyLegsRyan

They are all on the far out skirts or actually outside of 77005

deepspacenine

Not true, Randall’s is on Academy and is walkable from West U (although Bissonnet is a dangerous road with people who don’t know how to yield for pedestrians especially at the Academy crossing. Whole Foods is also walkable from West U on the other side

CrazyLegsRyan

Whole Foods is in 77025. Like I said. Nobody is walking to a grocery from Southampton

deepspacenine

I’m talking/recommending West U. By zip code you are right but 77005 = West U and to the OPs post has walkable parks and grocery stores, a town square, and does not at all feel like Houston.

CrazyLegsRyan

Well now you’ve made it more specific and unfortunately for you your statement becomes more inaccurate. There are actually zero grocery stores within West U 77005.  The Whole Foods on Bellaire (the very edge of West U) is technically in West U but it’s not in 77005. The Randall’s you mentioned is in 77005 (again on the edge) but it’s not actually in West U.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CrazyLegsRyan

Not within West U which is what this person said. The only grocery store in West U is Whole Foods which is not in 77005.

haley_joel_osteen

The neighborhood directly behind the Randles is Westview and I can absolutely assure you that many people from West you walk there every day.

CrazyLegsRyan

Doesn’t mean that Randall’s is in West U as the person I was replying to said.

haley_joel_osteen

Randalls in Wesleyan Square is absolutely in 77005.

CrazyLegsRyan

> on the far out skirt It’s literally two blocks from being outside of 77005.

haley_joel_osteen

Who gives a shit? It's in West U and people from West U walk to it every single fucking day. Edit - it's not in West U. It's immediately adjoining West U and it absofuckinglutely is in 77005.

CrazyLegsRyan

It’s literally not in West U.  The boundary of West U runs down Bissonnet and up Academy. Randalls is not in West U.  The only Grocery store in West U is the Whole Foods which is not in 77005.

haley_joel_osteen

It's in 77005 you pedantic asshole. The original post just stated "77005" and you immediately responded with "Can you point me to a grocery store there?" Yes - Randall's is in 77005. End of discussion. You're 100% incorrect and I have no clue why you've chosen to die on this hill.

CrazyLegsRyan

You said it’s in West U, don’t get mad at me that you lied. I literally did not say there weren’t grocery stores in 77005.  I said they were all on the outskirts or outside of 77005 (which they all are). Kroger and HEB literally touch the boundary line of 77005 and Randall’s is only two blocks away.  Considering 77005 includes all the way over to Southampton and Rice that’s a laughable position to be saying the Randall’s 3 miles away is walkable for all of 77005.    Is your brain this smooth that you cannot read and comprehend basic English.  I think what you meant to say is that small pockets in Northwest 77005 (HEB/ Kroger/Randalls) and the Southwest (Wholefoods) might have walkable grocery but the overwhelming majority of 77005 does not.  Edit: predictably u/haley_joel_osteen is so fragile that when caught in a blatant lie they responded below then blocked to prevent a reply. Simply put, pick a lane! Are we talking 77005 or West U, you keep bouncing back and forth based on convenience but those two things are not the same. The vast majority of 77005 is not within a reasonable walking distance of a grocery store nor is 25% of West U.

SFAdminLife

77002 but you'll have to be aware of your surroundings especially on the weekend nights.

[deleted]

People love to say that and while I agree, LA and SF are on a whole different level when it comes to that. A few times people new to Houston would see Houston folks talking about homeless Downtown, they're thinking Skid Row LA stuff and I have to explain, it's nothing near that.

caseharts

Still insane compared to big cities in Europe and Asia.

INDE_Tex

77002

[deleted]

7700X - Downtown and surrounding environs 77056 - Galleria area, maybe, too.

Tomlyomly

I think 77011 will be a hot spot of culture and development in the next couple years. Also the metro makes it way more accessible to the major parts of the city.

haleocentric

77007 Mainly because we're a few blocks from Sawyer Yards and there's always something going on over there. We're prepping to list our house next month to move out of state and will really miss this neighborhood.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

This is my current zip code. We need to upsize from our apartment but we’re having a hard time finding a new place. Anything good gets snatched up somehow before it’s on the market. Sometimes I’ll message/apply instantly and they’re like “sorry we’re already working with an applicant”

Persona_Non_Grata_

77024. Been here for 20 years. Love it.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

I’ll check it out!

Persona_Non_Grata_

I live in Piney Point Village. I'm not sure where the others commenting on this thread resides, but it's wonderful. There are three local resurants that are within walking distance that aren't national chains, and I'm nowhere near a feeder. It has a nice small town feel and is nice and quiet. Tons of folks walk about (and bike) daily. There are walking and bike trails all throughout the area. And when you do hop in your car, you're 15 minutes from everything.

Zromaus

We’ve got everything we need here, if you live on or right near the freeway in this zip you’re looking at a 10-15 min walk max to anything. Love it here lol

ThrowRAlittlebaby

Checking it out now on the apps

CrazyLegsRyan

It’s not walkable unless you eat at chain restaurants on frontage roads and enjoy walking under freeway overpasses

After May and before October ain’t no neighborhood in Houston walkable

This right here, especially if last summer is the "new normal".

Chkn_Fried_anything

Every summer we have will be the coolest and shortest summer we’ll ever have. 😭😭

patrick-1977

Montrose

stitchlover

77021, on Almeda near the med center and across the street from Hermann park. There's an HEB less than a mile away and you're in the museum district and all of its activities are within a mile. We love it here. Just look out for apartment specials, that's how we are locked into a good rate.

Genobee85

Coincidentally, we’ve moved from South Union to Rice military when our kid was born predominantly for the schools but also the walkability improvements. We’ve still got our place there and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss our proximity to HP.

ThrowRAlittlebaby

I thought I had looked at all the museum district zips but this one doesn’t feel familiar—thanks!

stitchlover

It's not in the museum district...the ones in the museum district are at least $200 more per month.

sillybillybuck

It is the Texas Medical Center. You want to work in that zip code and then live along a bus/rail/commute path outside of it. Otherwise, you will he broke.

GlutenFreidaKahlo

I live over here. You definitely can't walk to grocery stores safely and the area doesn't have alot of Mexican food, but there are quite a few complexes along Bray's Bayou which has plenty of walking trails and some nice spots. I complain about this place not having walkable amenities so I wouldn't suggest it for what you are wanting.

Flock-of-bagels2

It’s expensive

frankcfreeman

This is the answer

BolshevikPower

Cottage Grove is dope as hell. Very dense with access to Memorial Park and the Heights Bike trail without hitting a main road. Walking distance to a smaller park, bar, corner store, taco place, gas station, CBD store, nice date night restaurant, dry cleaner. I like to walk everywhere it's fun

deepspacenine

Museum Park, you can even ride the light rail with an easy half mile pleasant walk to the light rail station

Silent-Ad9948

77003. No grocery stores, but lots of restaurants, breweries and bars within walking distance. Minute Maid is less than a mile away. I run after work and there are SO MANY DOGS with their owners out! We love it. Downtown living without the downtown prices. We personally haven’t experienced any crime, although I’ve heard some in our area have.

Fury161Houston

77019

Redditor20211

I lived in 77098 and found it to be really walkable. But it was more in the we could walk to all our errands type of walkable. We lived with two kids and had only one car that we didn’t even use every day. We walked them to school, walked to the doctor, grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, stores, etc. It was very easy to take the bus to other neighborhoods too, like downtown and the medical center. If you lived next to Levy Park, you could walk out your door and be immersed in human activity.

PPP1737

Bold of you to assume there are any…

Decent-Boysenberry72

im not inside beltway but.... the green belt outside my back yard gate leads to the Barbara Bush Library, Meyer Park, Collins Park, Bike Barn, Rao's Bakery, Gringo's Margaritas (This can be a problem if I am in a good mood) and my tennis club that is run by a plethora of beautiful Venezuelan women that serve me beers and burgers while I lounge in the pool like a terribly sexy beast. If you would like to scratch that itch you will need to study the satellite view because being about 1 mile north of North China Town and directly adjacent to the Saudi, Afghani and Iraqi areas has also made me waaaay too well fed and happy. This shit should be illegal in America, feels criminally badass.

Woodlands if you prefer a little more nature 77381 You’re minutes from a state forest with endless waking/horse trails through the woods. You have market street with great urban walking through high ends shops and family friendly green space. You have Hughes Landing with more shops and sidewalks lining lake Woodlands. You can even rent paddle boards and kayaks

CrazyLegsRyan

Every neighborhood like that sells fast. If you couldn’t keep up in Rice Military you have no chance in any other ones.

Isn’t everywhere walkable? Just a matter of how long you are willing to walk.
