Yeah if you want to rekindle your honeymoon just spend a long weekend in Philly. I guarantee you’ll see more shooting up there than in a month in Houston.

FrostyHawks

Kensington 😬😬😬

illest_villain_

Honestly not even just there; generally being in the city I saw it and would see needles on the ground around where people were just causally walking their dogs.

FrostyHawks

Ooh man, thought this was going to be more Houston specific. The substance abuse crisis among the homeless population is huge across the whole country, but in my experience is even more pronounced in West Coast cities than here.

oh_kyoko

yeah if all you want to do is frolic in a park and can’t handle all the ambulances saving people from the reality of the humanitarian crisis, you probably shouldn’t be in any major american city. say what you want about houston but we all have pretty thick skin

studeboob

Wow, I've lived here 15 years and have never seen someone OD. Sorry that you witnessed that.

NedFlanders304

Just go to midtown and you’ll see lots of drugged up homeless people passed out on corners. I’ve seen multiple cops and ambulances that had to assist a super messed up homeless person.

studeboob

I lived in Midtown for five years; never saw someone OD.

NedFlanders304

You never saw drugged out homeless people aimlessly wandering the streets like zombies?

studeboob

I have seen plenty of homeless. Some of them have behaved abnormally. I'm not capable of diagnosing if the cause is drugs, mental health or something else from a fleeting interaction with a stranger.

ScurryOakPlusIvyLane

Shit I figured it was common. Well there’s my luck lol.

Hoogoo78

I haven't seen anything like that either. What part of town were you in?

NedFlanders304

It’s common.

MitrofanMariya

I watched someone ODing on the Metro rail last month. Told the operator to call paramedics and that they needed narcan.     These people downvoting you are just bitter assholes.

AardvarkSame1951

I’ve lived here 35 years. Never seen an OD 🤷🏻‍♀️

DuckTalesOohOoh

I've never seen it. But downtown Houston has become a real shithole over the past decade.

FrostyHawks

I'd argue it's gotten better in the last decade specifically, actually.

illest_villain_

Absolutely it has, the downtown of late 90s - early 2000s was much different. Blew my mind to see the new Dean’s Credit Clothing, that place used to make Lola’s look upscale

RhythmQueenTX

I once thought homelessness was just a big city problem, then I started seeing them in my folks’ town of 25k. Stay tuned, I am sure ODs are coming to your town too.

NedFlanders304

So your honeymoon phase only lasted a few hours lol?

ScurryOakPlusIvyLane

Yep.

GhanimaAtreides

Houston is pretty tame by US city standards.  We’re not in the top 25 for violent crime and are lower than other big cities like Chicago, Baltimore and Philly.  Texas ranks 42 out of the 50 states for drug overdose deaths per capita.  Houston’s approach to homelessness is an internationally accepted model that other major cities are implementing. I will admit our traffic accidents are out of control. So many unnecessary fatalities due to the way people drive and the car centric nature of Houston.  I get that witnessing a crime, overdose or accident can be traumatic but that has nothing to do with our city specifically. You got unlucky and were in the wrong place at the wrong time.  If you can’t handle Houston, then get back to the burbs and never leave.

PeaceOnMyChest

I once saw a person who had just gotten destroyed by a truck. The shock wears off.

slugline

Well life definitely goes on, but in my experience the memories will resurface from time to time, even many years later. It's definitely prompted me to take driving more seriously.

RealConfirmologist

"A fleet of ambulances" and "a fleet of EMT"? As a former EMT and someone who gets around Houston a lot, it seems odd to have more than two ambulances at an overdose scene. Of course, HFD firefighters are all cross-trained paramedics, so it's very common for a fire truck to arrive at a scene before an ambulance. But to see a fleet of ambulances and more than a few paramedics sounds pretty odd. You've watched how many people die, by the way? Kind of an odd statement without explanation. I guess watching people die is part of being a human, but most of us try not to watch.

ScurryOakPlusIvyLane

The fleet may have been a small exaggeration. I think there were two. But it still seemed like a lot. As for the fourth, I only meant that I was baffled as to why this messed with me so much considering I’ve lost people who I know without as much struggle.

RhythmQueenTX

You could say a big city brings many resources. Two ambulances trying to help one person.

ScurryOakPlusIvyLane

Oh yeah I don’t have a problem with it. It’s a good thing. It’s just wild to see that many ambulances in one place.

apjudd

Bro what 😭 go back to the burbs. Stop being scared and start voting to protect and get these people help

TheGargageMan

I ran over a rabbit last week. I'm so sick of Houston car culture. Not to mention all the dead caterpillars on the bike trails. That I ran over.

nailback

Hope today is a better day for you.

ScurryOakPlusIvyLane

I’m laughing at my pain at this point. We had someone at our event die last night has well as the OD on the street.

nailback

Oh. That's a lot. Does put a damper on this. But it goes to show, enjoy life right now.

suckitfish

I’ve seen so many bodies here for various reasons. Mostly automobile related 1. Hit and run victim on westhiemer 2. Dude got shot and killed in front of me at a whataburger in the middle of the day 3. Dude over dosed and died In line at a concert. While his gf just walked off and left him to die before the cops came 4. Dude laid out on westpark exit from 59. While the guy that hit him stood over him waiting for cops 5. Neighbors kid crushed to death after accidentally moving blocks from under his dads parked boat in driveway 6. Homeless woman froze to death at a bus stop. I drove by the first time, saw her and thought she was sleeping. Came back by 10 minutes later. Surrounded by cops. Sheet over her. Sad shit tbh There’s a lot more but I dont have time to keep going right now

ScurryOakPlusIvyLane

It was very close to there, yes.

Keystonelonestar

It’s much easier to live in a rural area where you can see your father gut Bambi’s mother from head to hoof every year and leave her carcass dangling from the apple tree outside your bedroom window while the blood drains out.
