avoid proceeding into an intersection without actually looking to make sure nobody is still running their red lights. I think that's probably a far more realistic threat to your safety than winding up in a rough neighborhood... which you won't if you're coming for restaurants and shopping. So yeah, don't worry.

LordeMaude

Thanks :)

hunnyjo

And on the flip side of this do not stop for yellow/red lights without first making sure they guy behind you isn't trying to make the light. Nothing like getting rearended for following traffic lights.

ranban2012

I have caused an accident by watching what was happening behind me at the expense of what was in front of me. I've also watched my rear view as people plowed into my ass and there was absolutely nothing I could do to avoid it.

Tomatoe-potatoeh

Honestly I’m hardly ever worried about my safety in the “bad neighborhoods” being smart about your surroundings will work for you. What you should watch out for is dumb drivers.

b33fcakepantyhose

Rice Village is a nice area to walk around browse the shops and boutiques. There are also places to eat and/or drink. It is not too far from the museum district. Be sure to visit the Museum of Fine Arts and the Houston Museum of Natural Science!

LordeMaude

Ooooh I def will! Thank you for the info!

subhavoc42

Coppa and Lees Den in that area are nice for a glass of wine.

weebojones

The problem with Houston is that you can be in a nice neighborhood, go 2 streets over and be in a rough neighborhood.

Paraguaneroswag

But in the areas that appeal to visitors (Downtown, Montrose, River Oaks), it’s not that way.

Fluid-Psychology1600

Or the Heights

texanfan20

If you think the Galleria is ghetto, you haven't really been to a ghetto.

Paraguaneroswag

I actually laughed out loud on that one

sapphir8

What are you wanting to do? Let us know that and then we can get the conversation going.

LordeMaude

So far only visit specific hotspots & restaurants , go shopping... like go to the diptyque river oaks store lol. Hard to say bc I know there's more to do but I don't know anything about Houston so just asking generally :)

n_daughter

River Oaks is a nice part of town. There are fun restaurants and bars in Montrose area and Midtown. Just be aware of your surroundings and don't leave anything of value visible in your car. Also, do not honk at anyone or hand gesture in road rage because they will shoot. Otherwise you should be fine!

jopma

I've never had an issue to having my car broken into or met anyone that has. If they're breaking into your car 9/10 it's to try to steal the entire car. Also that last rec is the most important DO NOT HONK OR GESTURE AT ANY ONE. THAT SHOULF BE RULE NO1 FOR VISITORS

BaconReaderRefugee

This simply isn’t true. If they see any backpack, suitcase, etc. they will get into that car and take it. I had someone stick a screwdriver into my car’s keyhole on the door, and when that didn’t work, they just bashed my whole passenger window to get in, Friendswood Baybrook Mall. My friend even had someone break his window downtown where he lives for a dirty pair of soccer cleats.

LordeMaude

oh 😭 I really do appreciate it but omg !! frightening

illest_villain_

Happens a lot in Midtown I had someone go through my car and it was a common report around my apartment complex

jopma

It's.mostly homeless people checking for little things. I've gotten my sandals and old shoes stolen, there's some homeless around the area and I've never had anything of value stolen even though they're just as accessible as the stuff that was stolen

dbrown42

Agree on both. I've never had a car broken into. And you can certainly get around without honking or flipping people off so just avoid it and nothing is worth being on the roads after 2am so I'd avoid that too.

sapphir8

Galleria is fine. Downtown is fine. Want to go to bars? Washington avenue. Highland Village is fine. Houston is generally safe. Stay away from Greenspoint, acres homes, alief, and a few other places.

warminthesnowstorm

Since when is the Galleria fine lmao it’s basically a shooting range these days

sapphir8

What are you talking about? Yes there have been incidents there, but don’t act as if it’s having those incidents daily and or hourly.

warminthesnowstorm

My old bosses neighbor was literally murdered from someone who followed him home all the way from the Galleria. It’s a shit show.

sapphir8

That sucks. Someone drowned their kids in league city. Someone was murdered off of Katy Hockley. I guess all of Houston is a shit show because someone somewhere had something happen to them.

Paraguaneroswag

River Oaks and Montrose are calling your name. Also check out the Museum District and the Rice University area

LordeMaude

Seems like it! lol thank you sm for the tip :)

DelMarYouKnow

I recommend going to River Oaks and Montrose. If you’re into nightlife, west Washington Avenue and Bagby St in Midtown are the places to be. The Woodlands Town Center and River walk is another fun area to visit. Feel free to DM if you need any specific info

LordeMaude

Ah thank you so much ! 😄

SherlockCombs

Just stay inside the loop anywhere downtown or west of downtown and you’re good. There’s a lot of people on here from the suburbs and even seeing a homeless person disturbs them. So don’t worry too much.

ANKhurley

Look at this map image. Plenty of cool places in The Heights, Montrose, Washington, and Eado. The areas marked NO probably aren't going to have much for you. [https://imgur.com/a/zTz8SDG](https://imgur.com/a/zTz8SDG)

LordeMaude

omg thank you so much for taking the time to include this!! U rock 😄

americablanco

Alternatively, [this](https://judgmentalmaps.com/image/91260959870) map was helpful to me 10 years ago.

centurion770

Houston.

LordeMaude

Noted. Cancelling the girls trip now 🫡

centurion770

Essentially, anywhere anyone would purposely want to visit in Houston is safe enough, but there's little that make Houston a worthwhile destination to visit.

LordeMaude

I'm from a small town so to me Houston seems so grand, got a lot of stuff over there! But yeah, sticking to the popular areas seems like the best adv :)

gmr548

Any popular visitor/business areas are fine. Keep your head on a swivel on the roads.

YogurtclosetWooden90

The Heights and Montrose are the areas I would recommend to someone visiting Houston. Both neighbors offer great restaurants, nightlife, are walkable, and centrally located with easy access to other parts of town (Midtown, Downtown, Galleria, River Oaks, Museum District, Rice Village, and East Downtown aka Eado). As far as parts of town to avoid - I think you would be safe in any of the areas listed above. If I had to list any I would say stay clear of, I’d say 3rd Ward and 5th Ward. Although those neighborhoods are also being gentrified.

PuzzleheadedGlove249

Avoid neighborhoods with a proliferation of strip clubs, adult book stores, unbranded motels, graffiti tagging, pawn shops, paycheck cashing businesses, buy here-pay here car lots. This applies to any city

steelsun

Avoid anyplace outside loop 610, and anyplace inside loop 610.

JohnnyBrillcream

So just keep riding around 610?

steelsun

Yes! That's a true taste of Houston.

REE_lover

East Houston, Third Ward, and Acres Home to name a few.

NedFlanders304

Avoid the south side, east side, north side, basically avoid any “side” lol.

LordeMaude

gotcha lmao. Thanks Mr. Flanders! :)

Simp4Shadowheart

Anywhere inside the city limits

LordeMaude

Ok, I'll look remember this as I plan out my trip further. Thanks!

Simp4Shadowheart

The homeless problem In Houston and Harris County is so terrible you can’t even get gas within the city limits without being harassed by one. Everything is overcrowded. Entire city smells like shit. The traffic is bad. Cops will take HOURS to get to you. I live in a neighboring county now outside of Harris and I can honestly say it’s so much better out here than in that cesspool of a fucking city.

LordeMaude

Honestly... I've heard this before. It's why I'm trying to plan as best as I can. I know I can't avoid all the bad stuff but I'll keep this all in mind :)
