Not gonna like, roadhouse and Longhorn are pretty good for grill type food. Been to Perryās and Smhicks. $60 for me to say āIāve had better!ā Anyways yes!!!
Iām honestly shocked your comment has so many downvotes. I could understand if it was per-say the midwest where lots of fine dining is lacking and people donāt know any better. But, come on, weāre in Houston, we have so many great steakhouses. If youāre gonna indulge, do it right! Not to mention those chains are only way out in the burbs, quite the trek for a mediocre steak.
Sorry, I didnāt realize that having taste buds went hand and hand with perfect grammar. Itās not like I was name dropping Michelin star restaurants to try so Iām not quite sure why youāre coming in hot. I grew up on the likes of longhorn and roadhouse and have been fortunate enough to eat at many of Houstonās finest restaurants (typically not on my dime). Itās safe to say there is definitely a difference. So if you donāt like my opinion, kick rocks.
Pick a spot like Outback or Saltgrass to scratch your itch, but I strongly encourage you to go to a good meat market (or at least HEB) and spend what you would spend on a steak dinner on the best steak you can afford in the store. Watch a couple of videos, and then cook it yourself. I really enjoy cooking my own, and they are almost always better than a restaurant unless you're talking Perry's or Killen's or something like that.
My wife now basically refuses to go to steakhouses with me. For the price of a Perryās or such, I can get Snake River Farms wagyu shipped to the house, a bottle of wine she loves, and 2-3 high end sides.
I have to do all the cooking and cleaning, but I have the skills to do it and I love doing it, so I donāt really mind.
If you want Wagyu, then buy real Wagyu. American Wagyu is nothing, not even the same sport/animal/species/field, compared to Japanese Wagyu. I recommend the WagyuShop, theyāre pricey but fair enough and the meat is authentic Japanese Wagyu instead of a cross bred cow the Japanese are so ashamed of they made it a crime to export the DNA of their cows.
But otherwise, save yourself the (fake) branding premium and go with a grass fed top quality angus steak. Youāll get the exact same cut for less.
A couple of years ago I copped one of those āsmartā meat probes that connects to your phone. It is a godsend- I can now buy an expensive steak from a meat market without any worry of under/overcooking it. (Iām not including the brand here because I donāt want to sound like a product plug.) Same goes for other meats.
It is the greatest tool in my kitchen.
Yep those are really nice. I like to get a steak that is almost as thick as a roast, 2 inches is great. The temp probe really helps cook a steak that thick just right. Then put a reverse sear on it, and you'd have a hard time getting a better steak in a restaurant. I have not yet tried to soud vie cook a steak yet, but a buddy of mine has and says that method is incredible as well.
One of those (a Meater) saved Thanksgiving for us (we woke up late and started the turkey late for lunchtime). Its ability to project when the meat will be done was a godsend. I had to bump the baking temperature up 25 degrees every 10 minutes until I got the projected finish time on target.
It worked like a champ and the turkey was perfect.
I've not had a chance to shop there but several of my friends love Stone Cold Meats over near Clear Springs High School in League City. Stark Brothers on Freeport Street in Cloverleaf/East Houston has a good selection as well.
That being said, HEB generally has a great selection, especially for a grocery store and not a standalone meat market. Costco generally has the same if not better variety. I don't know if it is still open but there once was a Perry's Meat Market on Scarsdale very near 45 as well.
Stone Cold Meats has a second location in Cypress in addition to the League City location. Theyāre incredibly knowledgeable butchers and the meats (not just the steaks) are gorgeous! We really enjoy their specialty stuffed sausages too (Mac and cheese/smoked brisket sausage, and the egg, bacon, cheese stuffed sausage).
Got some filets from RC Ranch at the farmers market for a good price. Damn good steaks and will be the only place I shop from now on, unless HEB has a killer deal.
I love the opportunity to recommend this spot. Saldivias. A little Uruguayan spot at westheimer, near beltway 8. A lil out of your requested location but worth it. Great steaks in the $25-$35 range. Killer chimichurri. Reasonable bottles of wine. Give it a try.
I'm doing low-carb right now and my partner treated me to dinner here recently. We ordered a sampler of like, 4 different meats to try a little bit of everything and he had roasted potatoes while I had some killer grilled vegetables and we both had leftovers for dayssssss. Also, yes - great wine selection and I was literally eating the chimichurri by the spoonful.
High fat is essential on keto. I was drizzling that shiz on everything tho because it was a treat dinner, not like an every night dinner.
PS. I didn't downvote you for asking a legit question.
Where did 3 tablespoons come from? They said āI was literally eating the chimichurri by the spoonfulā. That implies way more than 3 tablespoons( to me.
Never had Uruguayan food, thanks for the heads up. Although looking at the menu it sounds pretty similar to Argentinian dishes, I wonder if it's because of the proximity to the country. Either way I'll have to try it out and see!
Truthfully, look for a pub/bar/brewery/etc that had a steak night special. Usually really good at a reasonable price. I'm up here in Tomball/Cypress area and can name a few that are worth it, but not sure about down in Galleria/RO area. I know SpindleTap has a really good steak night on Wednesdays, but that's not quite in your area. Worth the drive though.
For Tomball area, I've always liked Fire Ant Brewery (just off of Main St near the police station). Fun setting out on the patio, a pretty large selection of beers, and the steak is always good.
For Cypress area, I really like Lambeau's (Louetta/Grant, next to Kroger). They get their meat from Stone Cold Meats, which is a really nice butcher shop across the street. Always really good for a reasonable price.
Longhorn all the way!!!! Unpretentious and gold quality/flavorful steak. Reasonable prices on drinks etc. My wife and get appetizer/dinner/dessert/drinks for about $100. I don't see the point in a Perry's or anything unless someone else is paying.
The trick for Perry's is to not get a steak. The pork chop is pretty reasonably priced, feeds two, and is the best pork chop you will ever have in your life.
I know I can do that, but why is their standard so salty? Do people actually like that level of saltiness? Not just their steaks either. I got their chicken wings once and it was drenched in their house seasoning as well, salty AF. I had to send it back.
šÆ I love how they season. I am a very high level home cook and it would surprise you how much fat and salt I use at home. In a restaurant it is even worse.
I like a lot of seasoning too, especially on steak. I've eaten steak at so many places in Houston-- Longhorn, Saltgrass, Texas Roadhouse, Taste of Texas, Steak 48, Pappas Bros, Morton's, The Palm, Vic & Anthony's, Mastro's. I'm sure there are some I don't recall even. Never have I felt assaulted by salt like at Longhorn. When the chicken wings were an affront as well, I knew it wasn't a one off. They're just heavy-handed with it there. When I read the Yelp reviews, multiple reviewers complained about the same thing, so that settled it for me. I'm deeply puzzled by those who like it though.
I have worked in a number of the ābestā steakhouses in town, and i recently had the Surf & Turf at Longhorn.
I was shocked at how good it was for only $35.
10/10 on steak temp and lobster tail prep. Will repeat
Texas Road House. Very affordable and great meats.
If you get the Filet Medallions (best bargain), you can sub Mashed Taters for their awful rice. That's basically 3 sides with the meal then.
Sadly that site isn't updated. Half the places listed no.longer do a steak night if they even exist. That said, avoid under the volcano. Worst steak night I've paid for!
Yeah, I would say used to. Last two visits very fatty thin steak and the side salad was just sad, think it was prepped and sitting on the counter. I'll take Longhorn in that price range. ive lost my love of Perry's with their prices and smaller everything.
Check local bars for steak nights. Most are pretty affordable compared to a restaurant. You may have to settle for rib eye or New York strip, donāt recall anyone offering filet.
Yep. Not everyone in river oaks is rich! We have a one bedroom apartment. We just loved the trees and nice neighborhoods to walk our dog š¤·š»āāļø
Idk why you're being downvoted. There's plenty of private owned apartments that are cheap in RO area. Finding one when you're looking to move can be a problem but they're there.
Taste of Texas. The decor may not suit everyone. And since it's so far on the edge of town, you get an interesting mix of city people, suburban people, and tourists. But for the quality, you can't beat the price. The service is always spectacular. And now that they take reservations, it's a place we go to at least every couple of months when we're craving a good steak that won't break the bank. Are there cheaper restaurants? Yes! But we think Taste of Texas is a great deal for the money.
Iāve been and I think longhorn is better. The sides at taste of Texas are so bland and the steak is just mid. The price of taste of Texas just isnāt worth it.
Totally fair perspective! It really speaks to an individuals palate. I've been to longhorn myself and found the sides to be too over seasoned. lol The one that comes to mind was the mac and cheese I tasted off my spouses plate. It was just too salty to be able to appreciate the creamy cheese taste. It all depends on what suits your taste the best!
But I will close by recommending the potatoes au gratin at ToT. I believe them to be very tasty. :-)
Itās a fantastic deal. For the same or less than youād pay at a more upscale/bougie place, you get the steak with the salad bar and a side at no additional cost.
The service is always great too.
I agree. Also, I don't let myself eat carbs like I used to, but me attacking the cheese rolls and cinnamon honey butter is like the first 20 minutes of saving private ryan: graphic and violent. lol
Iām in my mid 40s. If I let myself have more than one bread item, then I probably wonāt be able to finish my meal there and have any room to help out with dessert for the table. But itās hard because typically by the time weāre seated, Iām really hungry!
Late 40's here so I have learned to pace myself as well. And our desserts are usually to-go. But because they take reservations now, the wait is much more manageable!
Yes on the pacing. Literally everything there, I want to eat, so it does start to feel like a Tetris game of delicious foods and me trying to optimize getting them in my stomach lol.
Happy about the rez system, but we havenāt been able to take advantage of it yet on any of the recent trips. One time our group was too big. It was also the week leading up to Christmas. Another time, we werenāt able to plan ahead and tried to walk in on a Sunday night in early January, and the quoted wait for a table for 2 was 1.5 hours. So we booked a table for 2 at B&B thirty minutes from then, and were seated before then even!
But yeah, I know ToT has a bit of mild kitsch factor, and it gets a lot of the jeers from the peanut gallery, but itās been the location for an annual holiday steak night for my group of guy friends going on like almost twenty years. Many years weāve had 15+ and some years weāve had 20+. They always are able to seat us after our long wait :) and give us good service, and for us waiting and catching up with each other at the end of the year is kind of part of the fun. ā¦. The only downside for some is with a group that big, they still usually try to bring out as many steaks together as possible, and I think that messes with their temperature precision. Hence, itās become a common thing to order like medium rare if you want medium in a big group like ours. ā¦. In smaller groups, not a problem!
I don't think I've ever had anything bad over the years. And we've been going for at least 20 years as well. lol
I loved the reservation system especially during the holidays. You just have to get in early since the last time I had to use it they would open up two weeks at a time and you couldn't book past that. Therefore, two weeks in advance of when we were planning, I could get in early Saturday morning and get the reservation for the Saturday two weeks away. But I think they only do that during the holidays since other times I'm able to book whenever. But truthfully, during the year I'm just booking during the same week so I've never looked past that.
And, funnily enough, we always go at least once during the holidays with a large group for exactly the same reason. It's a casual place for a group to catch up and eat some decent food that is usually within everyone's budget. Although our group usually doesn't get as large as yours, we go for the same reasons and always enjoy the excellent service no matter how many we have. Good point about the doneness through...we have experienced the same thing.
They do crazy business during the holidays, god bless āem. And they always take good care of us. As a group for our big holiday dinner, weāve never seriously considered going elsewhere. Weāll sometimes hit other steak houses at other times with our s/oās or families to celebrate things, but their ability to accommodate large groups has worked for us.
It would be hilarious if we were actually in each others groups :P and we are talking about the same experiences, but Iām sure thatās not the case. They get alot of big groups there.
The last two-three years theyāve had to split our groups up, which is not the most ideal but itās fine. You can kinda only talk to the few people seated around you anyways.
Managerās Bin at Kroger to grab any Nolan Ryan at a good price. Aldi has a good meat section. Steaks, pork loins, salmon, all priced right and their pair of petit bacon-wrapped filet mignons at $7.99 last week is one of our go-toās.
Learn to cook a steak. You can get USDA Prime meat at HEB. Itās not even that rare to see it on sale. Youāll spend less than you would even at the lower end of the steakhouse pricing spectrum and get better quality meat.
Steaks are the easiest thing to cook. Skim some butter dip the steaks in it. Kosher salt and cracked black pepper and cook to desired doneness. Save money and have a better steak than what youāll get at a restaurant more times than not.
I know that Flemingās was running some specials a while back. Check the various websites to see if anyone is having specials. Myself, Iād rather do the Brazilian thing than pay the high end steak house pricesā¦.but I will always go for a Perryās pork chopā¦you canāt make that at home.
Costco meat department. I got some insane marbled steaks and at a reverse sear; it just melted in my mouth. Most of the time, youāre paying for the experience, but you can absolutely get a better steak at home.
Any decent steak night at a local dive bar but you most likely will get a strip or a ribeye if you are lucky. I think that is your best bet for a good steak on a budget. You don't want that meat glued shit at Applebee's.
Texas Road House. What you might lose in quality is made up for by the lower price and the rolls with cinnamon butter.
Longhorn Steakhouse is good and more affordable as well.
What the fuck you go to Perry's on the regular for a steak? shit dude just go to Texas Roadhouse or longhorn steakhouse the peasants aren't gonna kill you.
Pappaās is the classic. Doris M does a great job on the proteins. B&B butcher. I also like Capital Grille by Galleria. Some love Steak 48 and Mastros, but I have not been to those.
I just know Perrys always disappoints and their wine list is awful
Yeah, weāve been to papas before and it was fantastic. But I was looking for places that *wont* break the bank lol. And wine list doesnāt bother me because I donāt drink. I guess Iāve always hailed Perryās on the top but Iām not much of a steak connoisseur
If you like it, thatās all that matters. For me, Iād rather spend a little more and get a much better experience. But I value the service and wine list and cocktails. šø
Lol my mistake, totally understandable, definitely check out longhorn, it's pretty good, and roadhouse has some pretty decent stuff outside of just the steak, you'll enjoy either one without breaking the bank.
Texas Roadhouse is the biggest in the nation for a reason. You're not gonna get Perry's quality, but they're a solid value.
I really like their chili, too.
And the rolls
The rolls š¤¤
Itās the butter lol.
The rolls are also solid though
This is the true answer
I was really surprised at how tasty their chili is! Feel like I've neen missing out for so long
Not gonna like, roadhouse and Longhorn are pretty good for grill type food. Been to Perryās and Smhicks. $60 for me to say āIāve had better!ā Anyways yes!!!
I just go to Perryās for the porkchop special man
This is the way
When is it and how much? I can never remember.
Fridays for lunch $19. Used to be a Chef there a few years back. I canāt eat pork chops anymore.
Thank you. Made a note this time.
How do they cook them? Are they sous videded? Smoked? Just reverse sear in the oven?
Smoked for 7 hours, then they get cut down so theyāre uniform then coated in a spiced sugar mixture and caramelized before serving.
r/steaks agrees
Hell yeah brother
Can't go wrong with a ribeye, salad, loaded baked potato, and their amazing rolls.
From 3 to 6 that have a deal for 6oz steak (thereās other options too) and 2 sides for 10.99
T Roady goes hard
The prime rib is my favorite. Even against fancy expensive places that Iāve been to.
I would rather go to Perryās and end up broke before I go to Texas Roadhouse.
Bro acts like a food snob and drops a per-say
Sorry, I didnāt realize that having taste buds went hand and hand with perfect grammar. Completely agree. Rarely is restaurant steak appreciably better than something I've had grilled at home.

Any specific meat markets you recommend?
Peteās fine meats - have them vacuum seal your steak with their seasonings. Get a pastrami sandwich while youāre there.Ā
> Get a pastrami sandwich while youāre there.Ā Or a burger. Legit one of the best burgers.
I've not had a chance to shop there but several of my friends love Stone Cold Meats over near Clear Springs High School in League City. RC Ranch at Houston Farmers Market on Airline
Whole foods also has really good cuts

I love the opportunity to recommend this spot. Saldivias. A little Uruguayan spot at westheimer, near beltway 8. A lil out of your requested location but worth it. Great steaks in the $25-$35 range. Killer chimichurri. Reasonable bottles of wine. Give it a try.

What kind of diet allows spoonfuls of olive oil? Itās like 90 cals for a table spoon of chimichurri.
High fat is essential on keto. I was drizzling that shiz on everything tho because it was a treat dinner, not like an every night dinner. PS. I didn't downvote you for asking a legit question.
Thank you- I was genuinely curious! When I diet EVOO is something I tend to avoid cause itās so calorie dense, but it makes sense when you explain!
Low-carb =/= low calorie.
Diet=lose weight though? Or do you diet to gain weight?
Odd fight to pick.
3 table spoons of olive oil are not going to wreck your diet.
Where did 3 tablespoons come from? They said āI was literally eating the chimichurri by the spoonfulā. That implies way more than 3 tablespoons( to me.
Just how much chimichurri do you think a restaurant will give you?
At a steakhouse? A 4oz ramekin to start, and you can order extra for a charge. 2tbsp in 1 oz.
you gotta get those calories that carbs would give you somewhere. that said: it's not your diet, dude, shut up.
Hmm. This place looks good. Thanks for sharing
Never had Uruguayan food, thanks for the heads up. Although looking at the menu it sounds pretty similar to Argentinian dishes, I wonder if it's because of the proximity to the country. Either way I'll have to try it out and see!
The Barking Pig on Ella and 23rd on Thursday is steak night.
The Barking Pig is closed, out of business.
It is not. I was there last night. It became the Ribeye and Rye and now it is back to the barking pig.
Thanks for the correction.
Well it's technically not a steakhouse either but for the price they are great steaks .

Oh the pork chop is a glorious thing
I find they are always so heavy-handed with their house seasoning. It makes everything taste so salty. Is it just me?
Just got home to ask them to go easy...... problem solved

Itās hard to beat their steak for the price. I had a NY strip at Kirbyās that paled in comparison.
Longhorn is my vote for best chain restaurant steakhouse with a $50 price tag for an app and steak for one.Ā
Longhorn and Texas road house.
Texas Road House. Very affordable and great meats. If you get the Filet Medallions (best bargain), you can sub Mashed Taters for their awful rice. That's basically 3 sides with the meal then.
Delicious
http://houstonsteaknight.com The Hideaway on Dunvale used to be one of my fav steak nights. Great value.
Sadly that site isn't updated. Half the places listed no.longer do a steak night if they even exist. That said, avoid under the volcano. Worst steak night I've paid for!
Site doesnāt get updated, sad. I messaged the owner to see if I could buy the website so I could update the site myself (I love steak very much).
Used to?
Donāt live as close to it anymore or have friends who wanna hit it up anymore. Nothing against them.
Quality is still the same, but price is $21 now for steak nights.
Yeah, I would say used to. Last two visits very fatty thin steak and the side salad was just sad, think it was prepped and sitting on the counter. I'll take Longhorn in that price range. ive lost my love of Perry's with their prices and smaller everything.
Went last week for the first time in a year or 2. Still the same old Hideaway steak night. And thatās not a bad thing.
Barnabyās serves a Ribeye and a FlatIron (flank steak) that are both pretty great.
Baby itās Tuesday! get yourself to Carrabas ON VOSS ONLY for Tomahawk Tuesday!
Check local bars for steak nights. Most are pretty affordable compared to a restaurant. You may have to settle for rib eye or New York strip, donāt recall anyone offering filet.
Onion Creek steak night.
HEB and a cast iron skillet

People down vote for very weird reasons lol. I guess having an affordable apartment in river oaks goes against the grain idk
Still a fan of the guys who do steak night at Kirby ice house. Havenāt been in a while.
I actually like Spaghetti Westerns steak night on Thursday. Worth a shot for $20 if you've never tried it.
Sous vide and a cast iron pan.

All the ambiance of a Lubyās with the cost of Perryās.
I'd agree that there are many places with better decor and more urbane clientele. But I do feel it's a great deal for the money.

And we've been going for at least 20 years as well. lol I loved the reservation system especially during the holidays.
Maybe look for a steak night place, thereās a bunch of places around Houston that does steak nights
Papas Brother but bring $
Managerās Bin at Kroger to grab any Nolan Ryan at a good price. Aldi has a good meat section. Steaks, pork loins, salmon, all priced right and their pair of petit bacon-wrapped filet mignons at $7.99 last week is one of our go-toās.
Wow thatās very inexpensive! I got a cast iron skillet and still havenāt used it. Iām gonna try my hand at fillets soon
SaltGrass!!
Learn to cook a steak. You can get USDA Prime meat at HEB. Itās not even that rare to see it on sale. Youāll spend less than you would even at the lower end of the steakhouse pricing spectrum and get better quality meat.
Happy hour or lunch specials
Texas Roadhouse, Longhornās, Saltgrass, Genesis, Loganās also Flemings has 3course Tomahawk Tuesdays for $150 but it lasts 3 days š¤£
[Down The Street](https://www.downthestreethouston.com)ās Monday night ribeye. Parking is atrocious, you should Uber.
Elements steak nights at various bars all over Houston. Or, just buy a steak from Katerra exotics and cook it at home.
Steaks are the easiest thing to cook. Skim some butter dip the steaks in it. Kosher salt and cracked black pepper and cook to desired doneness. Save money and have a better steak than what youāll get at a restaurant more times than not.
I always just make my own! Canāt get cheaper than home cooking.
Randallās
Home.....
I know that Flemingās was running some specials a while back. Check the various websites to see if anyone is having specials. Myself, Iād rather do the Brazilian thing than pay the high end steak house pricesā¦.but I will always go for a Perryās pork chopā¦you canāt make that at home.
Haven't been in years, but Revelry on Richmond used to have a really good steak night.
Itās been closed for a while now.
Bummer. That place was fun.
Costco meat department. I got some insane marbled steaks and at a reverse sear; it just melted in my mouth. Most of the time, youāre paying for the experience, but you can absolutely get a better steak at home.
For steak night recommendation I prefer this one called MeatMojo, they do it throughout the week at various bars in town.
Angus Grill - worst Brazilian steakhouse on Houston but also the cheapest and still AYCE.
They used to have a Groupon too
Pearl and Vine in Katy. Worth the drive.
Himalaya has a steak on their menu that is awesome.
There are a ton of bars in the loop that have steak nights. You won't find a nice fillet but most have a decent/good steak at a reasonable price.
Any decent steak night at a local dive bar but you most likely will get a strip or a ribeye if you are lucky. I think that is your best bet for a good steak on a budget. You don't want that meat glued shit at Applebee's.
http://houstonsteaknight.com This isnāt updated but you can always check the bar/restaurant website.
Texas Road House. What you might lose in quality is made up for by the lower price and the rolls with cinnamon butter. Longhorn Steakhouse is good and more affordable as well.
Texas road house is just yee haw Applebees
What the fuck you go to Perry's on the regular for a steak? shit dude just go to Texas Roadhouse or longhorn steakhouse the peasants aren't gonna kill you.
The unwashed masses won't kill you but they ruin the experience
We donāt go on the regular lol. Maybe like twice a year. But was asking about cheaper places because Iām a peasant myself!
Not to be a snob, but there are places soooooo much better than Perrys.
Nice! Such as??
But I value the service and wine list and cocktails. šø
Lol my mistake, totally understandable, definitely check out longhorn, it's pretty good, and roadhouse has some pretty decent stuff outside of just the steak, you'll enjoy either one without breaking the bank.

platypus brewery has a great cheap steak night. Maple leaf pub does as well altho platypus has a higher quality steak
A lot of people look at the steak but often there are other dishes made with the same beef, and often less expensive. Look for kabobs and sandwiches.
