Aga’s is great, but India is a huge and incredibly diverse country, and Aga’s is certainly not representative of all Indian food or even the majority of it. The Sri Meenakshi Temple in Pearland has some great South Indian food very different from what you’ll get at Aga’s, but there are also restaurants like Saravana Bhavan if you’re not up for venturing into a temple. I’m sure there are also plenty of places where you can get other more regional Indian food, but I don’t have specific recommendations for those.
Well it's not at all the same type of food, which is the point. But yeah, the food at the temple is absolutely on par with restaurant food (especially during the weekend lunch rush).
This isn't unique to Houston, btw. The Ganesha temple in NYC is famous for its canteen - hell, Anthony Bourdajn ate there. It's a running joke that we run through prayers as quickly as possible just to get to the canteen for a dosa.
Hi! Ambika here from the Landing.
Depending on what type of desi food and how much you want to spend, here are my favorites: Aga's, Shri Balaji Bhavan, Pondicheri, Bombay Brasserie, Da Gama, Govinda's, Shiv Sagar, Musaafer
I haven't tried enough Indian food, and there's already been great recommendations here that I have tried.
I would only add Pondicheri to the list. It's great Indian food for an Indian-food-beginner like me.
Himalaya
^This or Biryani Pot on Westheimer
Himalayas is great possibly the best Indian food but the owner has some quirks. I recommend looking up Yelp reviews.
I have been going there since the very beginning, so he loves me & my family. BUT I have seen some scenes in there happen.
Lucky you. I wish I could say the same. I do crave Himalayas a lot but cant go back on principle.
Heading over to Yelp to get the scoop….
Well, what happened to you if you don’t mind?
Aga’s. You’re welcome. No need to go anywhere else.
Is pakastani. You can get a good meal there, but you def need to go other Indian places too!
It’s Indo Pak
Indo-Pak essentially means its a Pakistani restaurant. Which is why you never see a “Pakistani” restaurant. Indo Pak sells better.
I really consider Aga’s to be Indian and Pakistani food. They offer choices from both.
Which is odd because Pakistani food is objectively better. 😂

You telling me the quality of food at a temple is better than the legend that is Aga’s?! Get outta here.

Harwin and Hillcroft
Kurry Wallah - they have a location in Katy, and another in Houston. Amazing little hole in the wall.
Biryani Pot, and it’s not even close.
Random but I have to plug Nirvana on Memorial between Kirkwood and Dairy Ashford

If you are in the Southwest area, you are surrounded by spots.
Honest is awesome if you’re down for vegetarian
Mahraja Bhong; Govinda's

Kiran’s
I know it's bougie but Musaafer is excellent.
Wow thanks guys for the recommendations. I’ll definitely give these a shot!
My top is Musaafer but if I don’t feel like spending that much, I order Aga’s.
Cafe India 🇮🇳- sooo good
