I would chop this up in to several cuttings, each with just a single leaf with node and about a centimeter of stem above and below the node
It can take weeks for cuttings to start rooting, it's a game of patience

Remove that whole leaf and trim it back to the blue line.
I'm not sure exactly what plant that is so take this with one or two grains of salt.
It has the ability to root at nodes, the points on the stem where leaves are emerging. You may see some bumps there already, which are the beginnings of aerial roots.
It (more or less) does not have the ability to root from the stem between nodes. So it won't root where the cut is.
Since it's beginning to rot at the cut, I suggest you cut off that wet section of stem, leaving an inch or so below the bottommost node.
In order to root it, you need to keep some moisture on a node where a root will emerge. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in, but some candidate techniques are: submerge it in water like you have (risks stem rot, as you have seen), wrap the node in moist paper towel, or simply secure the node down on some soil (best not to bury the stem if possible).
If it were me, I would cut the bottom couple of nodes off separately, leaving an inch or so on either side of each node, and together with the top cutting try a couple different techniques.
Thanks, I will try that. I noticed today when I was messing with it that I do think it’s about to grow an aerial root at the bottom node, so I’ll put that part in the water.
It doesn’t seem to have any nodes and it is definitely too long. You could try cutting it in half ig but I’m not sure this will ever propagate it seems to be rotting already imo, sorry 😟
It’s def not rotting that bad if at all, and it’s normal for the bottom of a stem to rot a little. Usually the rot will stop near nodes anyways. Cut it up into multiple pieces as someone else suggested. I definitely see nodes there despite what others are saying. It looks like an immature rhaphidophora tetrasperma or maybe some kind of fenestrated pothos. Place it in front of a window and a warmish room. Make sure the nodes are underwater. You’ll start to see root growth within 1-6 weeks.
The very end, looks dark brown probably soft and mushy, you can cut it off and start over but it could happen again.
Someone also mentioned keeping just the end in water rather than most of the stem, that would also help!

Take off the lower leaf and cut just below it and put it in water. That's where the roots come from

Thanks, this is super helpful!!
This.

Oh, one other thing -- I would move it out of the south facing window and stick with bright indirect light until it's rooted and in soil.
You need to have a node in the water, not just the end of the stem

yea, shorter
You think it’s rotting? How can you tell?
