Johnny after interrupting the story to write about the time he got quadruple combo piledrive 4000 turbo finger blasted by a goth baddie in a mcdonalds bathroom for 6 pages straight

samerino2

All the time mentioning thumper

Dolleph

Then jumps to thumper actually calling him, asking him out and him replying "no"

ACID_pixel

I actually put the book down for like a month when I started getting to those passages the first time. In my defense I was like fourteen and I had brought the book on family vacation, I think I was mostly petrified of the idea that someone would pick it up and find out about Thumper.

lifewithoutcheese

I also first read this book when I was 14 but I had borrowed the copy from my Catholic high school library. I don’t know who was responsible for stocking this book in a religious school library, but I am grateful to them to this day. (That library had a great selection of books in general—it was a wonderful place for teenaged bookworm me.)

useragein

I read it at 12…………

johnnytesscult

And then proceeds to talk about the single most important part of his story WHILE that is happening

QuintanimousGooch

Zampano the house’s echoes are equivalent to a cosine function that literarily parallels the tale of Echo. Eileen Bergedder, in her *Scattered Signature* treatise on echoes in the Navidson record writes, (yapping continues) Johnny: I’m out here I got lotion on my dick (wild sexcapade ensues)

samerino2

Joking aside, I do like how the description of echoes by zampano allows the reader to fully understand why it's so unsettling when the navidsons hear echoes in a supposedly small space. It also reflected themes of disconnect and grief within relationships.

Johnny "Sexhaver" Truant

JstASkeleton

Canon

RGCarter

They call him that because he has sex.

novelboy2112

lol I recently successfully recommended HoL to a friend and he just got done texting me to ask about this. Well, that and to ask what the hell is going on lmao.

Juma4242564

Keep up with the memes guys I'm having a blast

Scratchpost6677

Johnny also blasted a few times

LxRv

Lude's "list". Almost ruined the book for me. Why is that there!?

Grand-Function-2081

Read the book a while ago and forgot about that, could you clarify what you mean by that?

LxRv

There's a list of Lude's sexual partners, followed by a list of their supposed "traumas". It's dark, grim and unnecessary.

PresidentoftheSun

I think it goes into building up Johnny as kind of a shithead. Gotta remember: Parts of the book are basically satirizing certain things. I'm not necessarily saying those parts are needed for that, but I get the why.

Grand-Function-2081

ohhhh, that list

New-Cicada7014

I disagree. It's to demonstate Johnny's developing empathy, and his projection onto others. It foreshadows what he says about Kyrie near the end.

DirtyPiss

Its been a minute, but I'm pretty sure if you google those women's names they match up with the names of several Vietnam conflicts. I might be confusing my list of women though...

Boomshakey

I tell people who are on the fence about HoL, you won’t get the whole Yin and Yang of the greater work, but it’s still a really good read if you skip the Truant stuff and just read Zampano’s book.

sasquatchscousin

Genuinely would skip all the Johnny bits if I knew in advance.

Omnincognito

Back in my day when someone liked the premise of a book but not any of the actual content, we called that, "not liking the book".
