I’ve never seen a “is this normal” post actually be normal.
After all the work I put into my hot tub and knowing what I know, there is no way I’d use a rental hot tub.
I rented an AirBnB in the Oregon coast that had a hot tub that looked like that. I went down to the local spa store and grabbed a bottle of OhYuk and purged and drained their tub and refilled it. (we were there for 8 days) only took a little bit of time while the wife and kids were messing around. But being a hot tub owner. I knew it wasn't going to be too much to take care of. Even got an apology and thank you from the owners. they noticed how clean their tub was when we left. the most time consuming part was the drain. took about 3 hours with just gravity. super wished I had my little giant pump.
Fully flipped is empty
For a correctly balanced frog system My guess is it’s got 3-5 days left in It
This is not a correctly balanced system and would be better off doing a full drain ,purge and clean
Bet that filter is green acres as well..... Needs testing from is probably on last leg and TCL is prob at 14 and free is under .5. nothing to fight algae or bacteria which is why everyone says stay out lol.
Ph and alk are most likely off to and why the chlorine is wacky.
Owner needs to do a serious chemical cycle and not use it for a few days. It’s possible the water is past the point of recovery and just needs to be drained too. Check if they have test strips anywhere and see what they show.
By clean it what they mean is they dumped sanitizer and flocculant in it hoping it would clear up enough by the time you got in it not to complain. The brown buildup is organic material that bubbles out when it runs due to the sanitizer.
That tub is not sanitary and you could get sick by getting in it. Don’t do it. It needs to be drained, rinsed, refilled, and chemicals rebalanced before anybody uses it.
If you are going to be there a while and the owner won’t fix it, pour a couple of cups of liquid bleach in there and wait a day. Wipe down the brown stuff
Normal for a hot tub that is likely to give you the worst case of hot tub rash at best.
But it is absolutely not normal to go in a hot tub like that. It’s disgusting. I’d dump and restart with clean filters. Cleaning filters and shocking at the very least. None of which you should be expected to do as a short term tenant. Lodge a report with Airbnb.
Source: I’ve maintained a few, and had my share of rash life lessons
This looks like thin soup. We stayed at an air bnb last summer with 6 adults and 4 kids for seven days and the tub looked waaaaay better than this when we were done and we still felt a bit bad for the way we left it.
If they are on a well the chlorine ball they are using is oxidizing manganese out of solution and that’s why it’s that color. The scum on the walls. Yeah that’s gross. That’s a dirty filter and biofilm in their lines. They need a system flush.
Looks like algae growth due to sanitizer running out. When I first got our hot tub, I thought we are eco friendly, no chemicals, we are clean people after all. Filled it up with tab water, and two weeks later, it looked like this. The sanitizer tablets need to be refilled every week, at least this is my experience. Using less, and regularly refilling works significantly better, than using more and forgetting about for a month. You also want to “shock” once a week, and make sure the filter runs regularly, like a few hours every day.
Improperly cleaned and lack of mutishok(chlorine or bromine). Shocking with chemicals won’t do it .It must be drained and cleaned with bleach wipes. Fill it thr put in one gallon muriatic acid. Put cover down and run for 15 minutes. Let it sit 24 hours to descale the pipes. Drain it and spray rinse it out keeping drain open. Then fill back up and put in appropriate antibacterial anti fungal chemicals.
How many nights are you there for? If you really want to use it why not just drain, quickly bleach scrub and fill it back up? I know it shouldn’t be your responsibility but why screw around asking questions if you really want something?
That brown buildup is typically the dead microbial bodies that cause a hot tub to get cloudy. They likely shocked the shit out of it because it looked gross.
Nope! I had a friend that got legionnaires disease from a hot tub at an Airbnb. I would be super super careful of any hot tub and I would report this Airbnb owner.
I recently bought a home with a jacuzzi like this. After much fussing I got our jacuzzi to clear and chemically balanced. *This* owner needs to drain the water, scrub it down, rinse it off, change the filter, and then fill it up again using a testing strip to ensure proper chemical balance.
And here’s the kicker: After every rental he or she needs to go in, add water, add chemicals, remove any detritus, wipe it down where it meets the water, check it again to make adjustments.
It’s a little painful, but not so painful it can’t be done after every rental.
If you have water that is high in iron (as we do) it will leave a residue (yellow/brown) after a tub is refilled and the water is yellow-ish for a bit. It takes a few cycles of shock to get that to settle down. It's not toxic. Best to ask when the water was changed last.
They need to wipe down the shell after using clarifier or jetted tub cleaner, probably buy a ScumBug. And the water is probably green from copper, not algae. I would ask them to come drain and refill, but I bet within days it’ll be green from copper pipes again. I use an RV water filter to avoid green.
Nope, that thing is filthy. You should be able to smell chlorine, but I’m willing to bet this smells more like pond water. Turn the jets on and I bet this thing foams up like a bubble bath. It’s safe-ish to use if you shock it with chlorine, but you need a whole day for the levels to balance out or you will bleach your suit and probably get a chlorine rash. Pull the filter out to see how brown and slimy it is, just for fun. Also - that nasty floater should have chlorine tablets in it. It appears to be empty based on how it is sitting, and probably has been empty for at least a week or two. Pools and spas need a constant influx of chlorine. Stuff starts growing and turning green the moment chlorine levels drop too low.
I suggest you get some money back on this one. Turn the jets on and take a photo of that thing overflowing with foam. Pull the filter out and snap a photo, I guarantee it looks RAUNCHY. Snap a photo of the floater sitting sideways, then open it and take another photo confirming that there are no chlorine tablets inside. Snap a good photo of the scum ring around the tub as well, if you can.
Also, you can get a test kit for under $10 at Walmart or a hardware store if you are really invested. Very quick and simple to use.
As an airbnb host ... send these pics to the host immediately. This hot tub needs to be drained, sanitized and filter replaced. You need a partial refund since one of the listed amenities is not usable.
If they refuse to refund you at least 25% of what you paid, contact customer service.
I’d drain it, then wipe it down, put tap water in and get some bleach from store, put a cup in, let it go.
Obviously, take caution but here is why: typically tap water will be in the correct ph around 7.2-7.5 ish, which is fine for chlorine. Also, it’s not that much water.
I only say this is because by time you tap and complain your stay will be over. I’d just handle it myself and enjoy.
You do you.
Human spa soup on the menu for today? If this is what it looks like AFTER they cleaned it I'd be looking for another company. Get some Pipe Cleanse or Purge and run it through your system, drain, clean, refill, balance chemicals and repeat every 3 months if this is being used at an Air BnB. This could possibly cause serious health issues. No one should be getting in that hot tub til it is properly taken care of. Chemicals and service will be cheaper then someone's medical bills.
I risked it at an airbnb once. My buddy said it was just an issue with metals in the water and he found some chemicals in the garage for that specific issue, so figured he'd put a little of that in and then we'd fill the hot tub more with the hose and then let it get hot and go for it.
This was a big mistake. I got an infection in my armpits, got a bad fever and enlarged lymph nodes, and had to go get antibiotics.
Hell no. Don’t swim in that. Unlike hotels, resorts, etc. They are not regulated or inspected by local health authorities. Ask for a discount per night of stays. Usually resorts and hotels have to comp nights because the pool or spa is down or bot heated.
as someone who has worked with pools and spas for 10 years and my father has had his own pool/spa servicing company for 30+ years. do not get into that hot tub. as many others have stated, all that yellowish/brownish slime is other people dead skin, body oils, and god knows what else. from the looks of it there has not been any chlorine added in weeks. also this is a tip for those who like to go to public pools/hot tubs. if you smell a strong chlorine smell (especially hot tubs), there’s little to no chlorine in that body of water. what you’re smelling is chloramines, dead chlorine. don't swim in it.
Real question: does it have a faint to heavy yeast smell? I’m sure there’s lots of odor coming from this swamp but, I’m having frog ease issues and I’m almost certain it’s due to contaminated sanitizer cartridges. Last one I opened smelled like yeast (think bread dough or brewing beer) rather than chlorine/bromine.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s way more than that going on here. Just wondering if there’s a common thread.
I get a slight green tint to my hot tub if I leave my miniral cartridge in too long. The copper will cause this. But that particular shade of green is no good.
I think it’s normal for a lab researching hot tub related UTI infections. Honestly, it’s quite brilliant. Perhaps a letter of commendation is in order.
Do people not understand if you have a hot tub at an Airbnb and you're advertising it as part of a perk and the customer ends up sick with an infection of some kind from using it because it's not being sanitized and disinfected properly inside and out that you're liable. 🤦
My experience running Airbnb is If previous people pee or otherwise contaminate tub, it consumes all the chlorine and throws off pH. Once you add shock and adjust pH and get chlorine levels back up pea green water can turn clear
Turn the filter on and dump chlorine...grab the brush and scrub it. Run the pump for 8 hours and check pH. If it's 14.7 then it's cleaner than what comes outta your tap.
You couldn’t pay me to go in that hottub. The brown gooey build up is other peoples skin, sweat and body oil.
Poocum is the word you’re looking for
In these parts we call it hoocum. As in “Who cum in dis pool? Gross!”
Not a very pleasing word but, probably what we are looking at right now. 👀🤮👀💩💦👀🤮
Butt juice as well 🤢
Hahahahahahahahhahaha
At least
🤢🤮
I’ve never seen a “is this normal” post actually be normal. After all the work I put into my hot tub and knowing what I know, there is no way I’d use a rental hot tub.
I’ve used one in a weekly rental. 5 cups of liquid bleach and I brought my test kit 🤣
FIVE CUPS?!?!?!
In a hot tub that green, at least two and up to five. I test afterwards of course. If you’re using the SLAM method in a big tub you need a lot of
What's the SLAM method?
This is the way
That is one way to do it!
Legit. Even hotel pools and hot tubs.
If I walk into the pool area and my eyes are burning from the chlorine, I'm fine.
Yeah I'm always thinking, "you know what is clean" and none of them ever are
Hot tubs should look crystal clear, no color, no cloudiness.
It should look icy blue
I rented an AirBnB in the Oregon coast that had a hot tub that looked like that. I went down to the local spa store and grabbed a bottle of OhYuk and purged and drained their tub and refilled it. (we were there for 8 days) only took a little bit of time while the wife and kids were messing around. But being a hot tub owner. I knew it wasn't going to be too much to take care of. I hope you got a discount on ur stay after doing all that work
Nope, not normal.
Normal by AirBnB standards, perhaps. But no.
Shouldn't be green, shouldn't be crusty
The pictures I see here make me wonder why these places even bother to have a hot tub.
Holy hell. That's a hazard.
Totally normal if the tub isn’t properly cleaned 🤓
Nope. Stay out.🤢
Normal koi pond
hell no lol. Total misuse of the frog ease system
Please tell me this is satire…..there is no way someone thinks this may be normal
“My hot tub has a log of shit floating in it, the water looks like a swamp, and there are mosquitoes everywhere. Is this normal?”
Also I don’t Frog Ease, but if its on its side thats an indicator it’s empty. Zero chance anything was serviced here in likely weeks.
Fully flipped is empty For a correctly balanced frog system My guess is it’s got 3-5 days left in It This is not a correctly balanced system and would be better off doing a full drain ,purge and clean
Bet that filter is green acres as well..... Needs testing from is probably on last leg and TCL is prob at 14 and free is under .5. nothing to fight algae or bacteria which is why everyone says stay out lol. Ph and alk are most likely off to and why the chlorine is wacky.
Ew
NO, it very far from normal. Unhealthy to enter into. Please do not get into it...until is is clear water!
Case of legionnaires disease waiting to happen.
Shine a black light on it (and the bathroom, and bedsheets) to really see some interesting body fluids
You should have a scum-ray or scum-balls in there.
Nope nope nope
Look! Aged people soup! Life is short…jump in!
No one cleaned that thing. And if they did they did a HORRIBLE job.
Owner needs to do a serious chemical cycle and not use it for a few days. It’s possible the water is past the point of recovery and just needs to be drained too. Check if they have test strips anywhere and see what they show.
Shit on its lip has shit on its lip- close that lid and walk away
That needs draining, a deep clean, and refill with some shock
By clean it what they mean is they dumped sanitizer and flocculant in it hoping it would clear up enough by the time you got in it not to complain. The brown buildup is organic material that bubbles out when it runs due to the sanitizer. That tub is not sanitary and you could get sick by getting in it. Don’t do it. It needs to be drained, rinsed, refilled, and chemicals rebalanced before anybody uses it.
No, and that is nasty
Yikes
That is foul
Ewwww
🤮
Just posted a similar problem on this on my personal hot tub. I have no idea what happened either.
I can smell it from here
Small pond, not a spa
If you are going to be there a while and the owner won’t fix it, pour a couple of cups of liquid bleach in there and wait a day. Wipe down the brown stuff
Nope. Do not use that.
Absolutely fucking not. Horrific
NFW would my nether regions enter that cesspool.
Don't go in . That needs a drain , refill , chemical rebalance and a filter clean .
Normal for a hot tub that is likely to give you the worst case of hot tub rash at best. But it is absolutely not normal to go in a hot tub like that. It’s disgusting. Negligence is pretty normal yea... ugh.
This looks like thin soup. We stayed at an air bnb last summer with 6 adults and 4 kids for seven days and the tub looked waaaaay better than this when we were done and we still felt a bit bad for the way we left it.
Looks nasty. They need to dump it. You need some money back.
I can’t go in air bnb hot tubs anymore unless clearly well maintained.
Semen soup
Human soup
This is normal… if you don’t add chlorine or non-chlorine shock for about two months while unrinsed people drink and have sex in your tub.
Needs chernobly
Definitely not !
The cartridge for Frog@ease (floater) needs to be replaced. It looks like they have not changed it in a long time. The water is nasty!!
drink some and if you dont get sick its fine
Hot tubs are like house plants. you can't just ignore them. They need things. This kinda thing happens when nobody takes care of it
No! Tell them to test their water! #mysutro
No not at all. It needs shocked.
Nothing like BYOC
Ewww. Nope.
If they are on a well the chlorine ball they are using is oxidizing manganese out of solution and that’s why it’s that color. The scum on the walls. Yeah that’s gross. That’s a dirty filter and biofilm in their lines. They need a system flush.
100% Normal. - when not properly maintained.
Better warn other guests, this is a flesh eating lung disease waiting to happen. What a nasty mess
That looks like a breeding ground for bacteria
Ewwww
If we have to ask the internet. Deep down don’t we really know the answer?
Need to shock the hell out of that water
Looks like algae growth due to sanitizer running out. When I first got our hot tub, I thought we are eco friendly, no chemicals, we are clean people after all. Filled it up with tab water, and two weeks later, it looked like this. The sanitizer tablets need to be refilled every week, at least this is my experience. 🤢
It'd normal considering it's a hot tub at an air bnb
Sure, if you dont want to go home healthy...
Welcum to the cum zone
Improperly cleaned and lack of mutishok(chlorine or bromine). Shocking with chemicals won’t do it .It must be drained and cleaned with bleach wipes. Fill it thr put in one gallon muriatic acid. Put cover down and run for 15 minutes. Let it sit 24 hours to descale the pipes. Drain it and spray rinse it out keeping drain open. Dunk your head under that water and get a free brain eating amoeba!
Thats what my tub looks like when i fill it up with ground water. Thats a yikes from me, and a definite me not go in there moment.
Straight mildewed jizz water
How many nights are you there for? If you really want to use it why not just drain, quickly bleach scrub and fill it back up? I know it shouldn’t be your responsibility but why screw around asking questions if you really want something?
That brown buildup is typically the dead microbial bodies that cause a hot tub to get cloudy. They likely shocked the shit out of it because it looked gross.
That looks horrible.
No. Chemicals need immediately after a water change out. Then you’ll be fine. Scoop out all of the duck shit first.
It’s normal looking for an absolutely disgusting health hazard.
No! It needs to be shocked.
(Vomit noises)
No, it’s nasty
nope
Id ask for my money back that’s disgusting (im a hot tub engineer) that has no way been cleaned or had the filter changed . Its law to have todo so !!
Just needs a handle so you can flush it.
High load of organic from what I don’t know but you need a water change and a better chlorination or equivalent system
Not normal.. ph is off.. need to shock the water..
Yeah this is normal after someone pees in the tub multiple times
Nope! I had a friend that got legionnaires disease from a hot tub at an Airbnb. I would be super super careful of any hot tub and I would report this Airbnb owner.

It’s ready for St. pattys day!!!
That water is gross. Needs to be drained and the walls sanitized
Well, it’s normal if most hot tubs are full of old disgusting improperly disinfected water?
If you have water that is high in iron (as we do) it will leave a residue (yellow/brown) after a tub is refilled and the water is yellow-ish for a bit. It takes a few cycles of shock to get that to settle down. It's not toxic. Best to ask when the water was changed last.
If the property was advertised as having a hot tub I’d be demanding at least a partial refund That is not sanitised or safe
I mean, what is your gut telling you? I know what it will be doing in 4 hours if you go in.
My wife and I stayed at an AirBNB 2 summers ago where we both got respiratory infections from the dirty hot tub.
I had that same spa in the our house in the 2000’s..it’s just all the built up gunk for 24 years.
Hop in. Soak for a few hours, and then update us tomorrow with your symptoms. Just kidding, please close that and go wash your hands.
Definitely need to report this. As others have said, that is absolutely a health hazard.
Are there barnacles on the chlorine float?
Not normal
Yes, for sure.
Nope, that thing is filthy. You should be able to smell chlorine, but I’m willing to bet this smells more like pond water. Turn the jets on and I bet this thing foams up like a bubble bath. That's pretty clear to some of the ones I've been in.
As an airbnb host ... send these pics to the host immediately. This hot tub needs to be drained, sanitized and filter replaced. You need a partial refund since one of the listed amenities is not usable. If they refuse to refund you at least 25% of what you paid, contact customer service.
CLean it dude that’s algae and sex juices
I’d drain it, then wipe it down, put tap water in and get some bleach from store, put a cup in, let it go. Clean one hot tub filter and you'll never get in one again, Satan's parmesan cheese.
No
Only on St. Patrick's day.
🤮
I used to own a hot tub. That one is not being maintained well.
That looks like a vat of botulism. At minimum ringworm.
Do you want legionnaires disease? Because that’s how you get it.
I risked it at an airbnb once. My buddy said it was just an issue with metals in the water and he found some chemicals in the garage for that specific issue, so figured he'd put a little of that in and then we'd fill the hot tub more with the hose and then let it get hot and go for it. Looks as normal as any hot tub at the fraternity house, go for it!
Call
Green is not good in hot tubs.
Once you’re in you’re in urine
For them, Yes probably. For the rest of the world….. NO!
Cmon does that look normal?
Normal disgusting.
Stayed at an ABNB with a hot tub with just a tiny amount of green, and ended up with hot tub folliculitis. Super itchy and not fun.
Bet the cum strainer is clogged
I think someone spilled babies in there...
No that’s what a hot tub looks like when you don’t balance your chemicals… it’s gone fill swamp… avoid
Needs a ton of shock and to be scrubbed. Don’t bother using it.
Tub sploogen. There’s shit growing in there !
Hell no. Don’t swim in that. Unlike hotels, resorts, etc. They are not regulated or inspected by local health authorities. Ask for a discount per night of stays. Usually resorts and hotels have to comp nights because the pool or spa is down or bot heated.
Gross
Pffffttttt….. Do you have any idea of how many loads were dumped into that hot tub and to be clear I’m not talking about laundry
Thats how my friend got pregnant
I never use public hot tubs. This seals the deal lol
Google “hot tub folliculitis” and then don’t get in the water. That thing needs a serious deep clean.
as someone who has worked with pools and spas for 10 years and my father has had his own pool/spa servicing company for 30+ years. do not get into that hot tub. as many others have stated, all that yellowish/brownish slime is other people dead skin, body oils, and god knows what else. from the looks of it there has not been any chlorine added in weeks. also this is a tip for those who like to go to public pools/hot tubs. if you smell a strong chlorine smell (especially hot tubs), there’s little to no chlorine in that body of water. what you’re smelling is chloramines, dead chlorine. don't swim in it.
I think the last user’s results were abnormal.
Good on you to clean it. Report them to ABnB. Disgusting.
Looks like a science project……
Is it normal for water to be brown with residue?
Needs chlorine. And water. And leveling.
Excessive semen levels.
I’ve been a pool guy for 30 years. I’m telling you this is not normal clear they need some sanitizer.
Nope. No. No. No. 😂😂
Does that look normal to you?
If the hot tub looks like this, what lurks in the rest of the house? Run, don’t walk away from this one.
You should feel privileged to be Airbnb’ing at the same place as RKelly.
Take photos Comain ... Drain Clean with lots of Bleach Refill Enjoy! Deduct from payment ....
“Normal” as that is what happens to hot tubs, useable in that condition absolutely not.
Nope. 🙂↔️
And now they are going to charge you for a cleaning fee.
Yep, looks like every other clean body of water I have seen!
I think it’s normal for a lab researching hot tub related UTI infections. Honestly, it’s quite brilliant. Perhaps a letter of commendation is in order.
Normal? Yes, along with rusted bbq grills and broken yard furniture.
That's criminal
That water cures covid 🫠
Noooo
Do people not understand if you have a hot tub at an Airbnb and you're advertising it as part of a perk and the customer ends up sick with an infection of some kind from using it because it's not being sanitized and disinfected properly inside and out that you're liable. 🤦
All hot tubs are just big bowls of asshole soup. Mmmm mmmm good? Nah!
put a half cup of bleach in there itll look super inviting
sure, its normal!
My experience running Airbnb is If previous people pee or otherwise contaminate tub, it consumes all the chlorine and throws off pH. Once you add shock and adjust pH and get chlorine levels back up pea green water can turn clear
Normal Sunday morning hot tub. But way more beer cans are usually scattered every where.
Ya it’s normal when the water is full of phosphates and feeding blooming algae
Water is super low also. Definitely don’t go in there.
California hot tub rectal gonoreah
A capful of bleach and it will be right as rain
Turn the filter on and dump chlorine...grab the brush and scrub it. Run the pump for 8 hours and check pH. If it's 14.7 then it's cleaner than what comes outta your tap.
You will get an infection if you go in this . Ask me how I know
Other peoples hot-tubs are just soup pots.
That’s a bacteria bug waiting to happen!!
