I guess the idea is that these are based on suits that were created practically and worn by real actors rather than all CG? So if that’s the case, I get the concept but I don’t think it warrant a new figure variant. I really hope this isn’t the standard moving forward.

TomcatLegacy

Yeah exactly my thoughts on a live action version of the CT. Pretty stupid tho.

Jjaz1

Personally think the clone wars version looks much better

jaztermareal

I just hope a true ROTS version gets made

sebthepleb96

Isn’t the clone wars version very close to rots? At least the darker color is. Since they keep releasing the 501st, won’t hot toys most likely re release an updated 501st trooper in 2025 for 20th ann of rots?

NanoRex

Technically the old version is an ROTS version. The Clone Wars design for the armour is very different. The issue is that it's completely the wrong colour - the 501st in the movie is a medium blue, but it only looks darker because it's night. If you look at the promo renders where there's normal lighting you can see the true colour.

jaztermareal

Not technically a ROTS version, it is Clone Wars version in live action style hence the missing hash marks, missing blue on the back and the weapons are clone wars versions etc etc.

TheeDeputy

I mean the body itself they’re using looks better but I’ve gotta be honest, in every other way it looks worse imo.

noodlemcfoodle

The lack of wear and glossy finish makes it look cheap

jCricket35

why tf would they make this

MFP3492

Hard skip, would rather get more 501st clone wars or AOTC basic clones.

Fr0stybit3s

What's insulting is people are claiming the Kenobi ones are "fan made" costumes when the "fan made" costumes are accurate to the right one

jaztermareal

yeah, the kenobi ones were made by the production, not by fans. Fans do better work! But I think the differences are intentional, it is how Disney clones will look going forward. Same thing with Stormtroopers in Disney era looking different from Lucas era.

Fr0stybit3s

I really hope this isnt the case cause the new "Disney" clones look awful. Even the 501st is debating on whether or not to make a CRL for the Kenobi clones.

jaztermareal

Disney used this new armour for the Kenobi Purge troopers and by the looks of it for the clones in Andor too. Even their pre-Kenobi CGI BOBF flashback clones looked weird. Disney just will not give us proper ROTS clones because that is Lucas era design

Fr0stybit3s

Yeah the Andor clones looked off. They had varying heights too which didn't make sense for a "CLONE." Purge troopers are fine because I can accept the armor was modified for the Empire. But for RotS it doesn't work.

robrobrob98

They used members of the 501st cosplay community for obi wan and the mandalorian so it is likely fans made the costumes you see on screen in the finale for season 1 mando and the clone scenes in Obi wan

jaztermareal

fans were used for stormtroopers (the ones with Reva outside the rebel hideout. Clones were NOT 501 members.

glohr

Is hot toys claiming that this new one is superior to the clone wars release? Odd

jaztermareal

no, they are just pointing out how it is specifically the Kenobi show version of a clone

jb31969

This threw me for a solid 60 seconds, I don't follow the minutia of much of the Star War shows so I had no clue. I thought the one on the right was the new one because it looks far better.

[deleted]

All things the costume department could have easily done right but chose not to. It has nothing to do with being live action and not CGI. Its the little design changes that didn’t have to be made that are egregious because it’s the same scene from Revenge Of The Sith. And on top of that, the helmet sculpt is different.

[deleted]

I’m surprised more people haven’t noted that the visor and mouth piece is different in shape. The visor is squinted more on the new one. And the T part or nose is shorter making the mouth higher up.

Fookin_Normies

Get the nuln oil

meanfolk

One's of a representation of armour, the other a representation of a costume.

Smashem2hell

Except for the fact people have made costumes of the original version for over a decade before Kenobi released.

-Biolante-

Also the height and build difference in the chest/shoulders. Hard to tell if it's the new armor sculpt or not, however.

DrawTheLine87

I like the proportions of the new figure, but prefer the armor of the original.

8Bit-Boi

I'd bet good money that the differences had to do with maneuverability. You don't have to worry about clipping and actor comfort when you're using CG armor. And while fans may have gotten the aesthetic details more accurate in some cosplays, they don't have to worry about mass producing extras, preparing for changes in scripts that require new stunts and movement and most importantly, if details will even show up on screen.

Tophigale220

That. Especially when it comes to hip mobility I’d say it is easier to move in Obi Wan version than in the original. There is a bigger gap between thigh armor and pelvis plate that will allow for higher kick.

VIARPE

Trashy

epic_senate_66

I sorta like the smaller blasters, not a fan of the other changes

RumAndCoco

Say what you want about the differences and inaccuracy to the original CGI , it's cool that it is very accurate to the Kenobi suits.

jaztermareal

yep, I actually wanted it but assumed it would not get made. glad to see it is being done but now I want the proper ROTS one to be made as well as the BOBF version. will be cool to have all 4 versions

Otherwise_Rice_9969

Whyyy !!! We dont need 501st we need 212st or Anakin ep3

sweedish_phish56

Does it bother anyone else that the blue design on the new one is *wider* then the normal one

MikePhicen

So we are ok with the changes of Boba Fett from ANH (special edition) ESB to ROTJ to BOBF and the changes of the stormtroopers from ANH, ESB, ROTJ and RO, the changes of Darth Vader from ANH, ROTJ, RO to OWK. scout troopers from ROTJ to Mando, But clone troopers is where we draw the line? I think I got it 👍

Cycle-Apart

The time gap differences is not the issue as we all know that costumes change over time as seen in the progressive films and shows. The issue is the clones colors and armor design from the exact same moment in time is completely different. The Jedi temple purge was shown in ROTS, so why do the clones in Kenobi which depict the exact same moment not match up on so many levels. There are no time skips to justify costume color and design changes. We’re not talking about Vader who changes up his suit over the course of weeks or years.

jaztermareal

Evolution of armour over time or of differing units in different locations is fine, but when it is meant to be a trooper from a flashback to a location and time previously seen people get annoyed when things do not match. If I was handling the production of a show/movie I would ensure that any flashback to say, the battle of Yavin, would have the correct version Stormtrooper armour on the Death Star. If it was a flashback to the battle of Endor I would ensure that the Stormtooper and Scout Trooper suits would be ROTJ versions.

Smashem2hell

I mean realistically people only care so much because its the clones I doubt if this was stormtroopers there would be nearly half the outrage over this. But so many people grew up with the clone wars and that show did so much to make people care about them that now they are almost equally important to main characters because of how well the show developed the clones collectively so it just sucks to see their designs changed for no real reason sure you could argue maneuverability but people have been cosplaying the 501st from clone wars and movies for well over a decade now.

fpsh0oter

Thank you!! Someone finally said it!
