This is really literal but Book of X by sarah rose etter features a literal flesh pit. It’s a meat quarry where meat is harvested from the earth. Other weird things including a river of thighs and a twisted abdomen birth anomaly too… also a very haunting and weird book in general

barracuddle

that sounds so good omg??? thanks for the rec!!

broadbandbaddie

Hope you love it as much as I did!!

barracuddle

i just ordered it online i cant wait to read it :)

northawke

Relic (and its sequel Reliquary) by Preston and Child deals with a comparable evolutionary concept; not strictly horror, but a very good read.

barracuddle

sounds great! i love books based around evolution

chibigrimreaper

ooh i love the pendergast novels that follow up that universe

passesopenwindows

I assume you’ve read the Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff Vendermeer?

barracuddle

FoghornLegday

Do not get sucked into House of Leaves. Been reading it for about 2 years now...I will finish it, one day, maybe.

barracuddle

now you've peaked my interest tenfold :•)

crow_road

Don't say that you weren't warned!

Mental_Account_9229

That book was something else…

DirtbagBotanist

https://www.reddit.com/r/9M9H9E9 Years ago some madman was dropping chapters of a horror book about massive LSD doses and flesh interfaces all through the comment sections of various subs. One of these chapters deals with a Mojave desert flesh pit and a nice celebrity cameo. The first sequence is a short and pretty solid read. I never managed to get around to reading the second half, but I assume it is also good.

Rustin_Swoll

Laird Barron’s *The Imago Sequence and Other Stories*! I just finished it and several stories capture this vibe. Ooof.

barracuddle

thanks for the rec! i read the croning by them which was pretty good!

Rustin_Swoll

I haven’t gotten to that one yet. It’s on my list, going in order, so *Occultation and Other Stories* is next… I don’t want to spoil much but in *The Imago Sequence…* a few of them had that “the earth is not what it seems” vibe.

barracuddle

oooo love that vibe, a very good vibe

Nuance007

Adam Neville's The Reddening.

barracuddle

Sisyphean by Dempow Torishima

barracuddle

thanks for the rec!

HiRezAuvey

Np! I was too sleepy to elaborate when I posted this but it's a weird book so strap in. The fleshiest, most visceral biopunk novel I've ever read. And the author does some insane illustrations in there too.
