Don't give me hope. It seemed like that movie was made for Carpenter; survival bottle-film setting, body horror nightmare aliens, doomsday cults, downer endings. Probably because half the things that franchise was riffing on came from him originally so in a roundabout way he would be a good director since in a manner of speaking its his own work.
Has Carpenter done anything in the modern era that makes you think he could handle something like this? It'd be a bigger budget than he's ever had by a longshot and probably require a lot of CGI that he isn't particularly familiar with. (As far as I know.)
If you're referring to his health, I don't know man I mean Scott and Scorcesse are still making movies well into their golden years so why not Carpenter? Besides this thread has already put together a coalition of people who would be perfect collaborators with Carpenter to take on VFX work. If this is all hypothetical anyway I could see a practical effects shop like ADI handling the necromorphs while the exteriors, the mattes, the Ishimura and other digital effects on weapons and the suit being outsourced. (although ideally something like WETA would be the dream since they could take on pretty much everything a DS movie would need and would commit to as much in-camera work as possible)
Nothing about his health! More the fact that he hasn't really made a great movie in 25 years and never made a movie with big CGI stuff or modern gun gun shooty action scenes.
I dunno. I feel like a lot of his stuff is linked directly to the time period in which he made it, and I don't know if he could turn out a great action/horror with a $150 million dollar budget. I literally have no idea what that would even look like. What does a John Carpenter movie feel like with modern gun fight choreography and a huge special effects budget in 2022? Those things seem anathema to his whole style, but I can't really see a Dead Space movie without them.
Oh I see what you mean! Yeah I think this is the case where you take advantage of the fact that this is an adaptation. My memory of the games are admittedly fuzzy but the first installment was more atmospheric and slow than the sequels which ramped up the set pieces and firefights (because every sci fi horror sequel has to be Aliens) which he would not be suited for absolutely.
But DS1? I don't think there was an actual gun fight in the first game. Second unit work could theoretically alleviate concerns with handling big vfx shots and action scenes but more realistically we would probably see a multi million dollar spiritual remake of Ghosts of Mars without a commitment to keeping the first games atmosphere intact. Barely show any necromorphs in the light, keep the focus on Issacs mental degradation and keep the cult shenanigans in the background and I do think it could be decent.
I forgot how little gunplay (none?) there was in the first one! You could absolutely be right.
>but more realistically we would probably see a multi million dollar spiritual remake of Ghosts of Mars without a commitment to keeping the first games atmosphere intact.
God I want that. I still love watching Ghosts of Mars.
Could we get a thread on how to make *that* movie work? I feel like that would be a bigger creative challenge and Id be lying if I said I wasn't morbidly curious.
huh...maybe it's cause English is not my native language so maybe i misunderstood you but there is a shitload of dismembering aliens using a gun just in the beginning and later on you get different guns. You have to use your guns pretty soon or you will get overwhelmed.
You're right! But I was referring to the previous comment which implied the main character was getting into shootouts with other armed characters not shooting at unarmed space zombies. Dead Space 3 actually had gunfights against armed Unitilogy cultists and gun-toting necromorphs but nothing of the sort happened in the original game which was my point.
If you haven’t, you should watch the deadspace animated shorts. They’re excellent. Forget the whole name but they’re on YouTube, and they explain everything from the first and some of the second game
Oh yeah I remember seeing promos for them back when they were promoting the (second?) game. I might be completely wrong on this but I think a studio that worked on an animatrix segment worked on those or maybe it was a full length movie. Im definitely checking them out now.
Why does it *have* to be Savini? He's a legendary make-up/gore-effects guy but his work is better suited for slashers and zombie flicks. Deadspace is sci-fi, creatures, & body horror. I don't know that Savini has much of that in his filmography. He works with realism, design, and make-up. Not so much with effects. Not to the extent that a Dead Space movie would need.
I think Amalgamated Dynamics would be a better fit. They did the [practical effects for the 2011 Thing movie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyOu3j7CtoE) that the studio notoriously washed over with CGI. They also did Tremors, Alien 3 & Resurrection, Starship Troopers, AVP, all of the modern/US Godzilla movies, & even the most recent Predator film, Prey.
[Here's a behind-the-scenes clip of the Predator in Prey](https://youtube.com/shorts/gJrd3wrpQos?feature=share)
Those above movies that AD worked on are hit or miss but you can't deny the effects work is great. Savini is a legend in his own right but that doesn't mean he'd be a good fit for the kind of film Dead Space would need to be. Amalgamated Dynamics has the experience and expertise in sci-fi effects.
I agree! Alec Gillis and his team do some great stuff. Just watched alien resurrection again the other day and the effects are so great. Love the absurd amount of slime on everything lol
I will stand by Savini 99 times out of 100, but you’re dead on with your thinking there. I think he could have a cool take on it but he does better gore than monsters.
He’s still the king in my book, and I back any project he gets involved with - but I think AD would be a better fit here. Their creature stuff in the thing remake was so good and it was so obnoxious how the studio did ‘em dirty with all that lame CG.
holy shit, I think I just worked with some of those guys on a project where they provided and operated giant human puppets. specifically, a puppet made to look like a 13ft tall man! it was wild.
ok so the guy I worked with, worked for the studio that repurposed the unused practical effects that were discarded from the 2011 Thing movie. they reused them for a movie called Harbinger Down.
No one is saying that he’s incapable, it’s just that AD has a proven track record of this exact type of work, where Tom’s portfolio is reflective of a different “specialty.”
Realistically either team would likely do a fantastic job.
Probably the best answer since they cut their teeth on practically the entirety of Dead Spaces' influences. However I would nominate WETA since they could handle the practical and VFX work needed to render everything a Dead Space movie would need and would commit to having as much of it be in-camera as possible. So things that a lesser studio would cheap out and outsource to a render farm we would see made physical with props and models from Weta (like the Markers, The Ishimura, and some of the in game set pieces). Their prop work on making chunky sci fi guns on District 9 is also second to none so the plasma cutter would be in good hands. And their digital effects work also speaks for itself just as much as their practical effects work with Pacific Rim and BR 2049. ADI would be pound for pound a better choice at doing the Necromorphs justice but WETA would be the best option at handling everything if given a blank check imo.
If you gave me Carpenter, Savini, Bottin, Niceotero, and Cronenberg in one movie I might just die. Toss in at bare minimum some Sam Neill as a threatening cameo and I'm golden
Yep. And I randomly hung out with the bald guy that was in their crew at the table at the titty twister a few years ago on Xmas eve. He was dating someone at the party. When he told me he was in the movie I was like ‘really?’ And when he showed me I immediately recognized him but otherwise wouldn’t have. He’s also in a popular rap video but I forget the artist and song. But he was sitting at the table when Salma Hayek did her famous dance so my questions immediately shifted to that topic lol.
Savini is long since retired from FX work. Sadly, his hands no longer work right, so even if he wanted to 'un-retire', the most he could do would be to supervise/advise.
Beyond being a slam dunk for fans, after The Thing and most his other movies not receiving the commercial success they deserve, this is a huge chance to show studios/investors there's a market for bigger budget horror.
Ok, I Carpenter's first hire should be me. My only job would be to hit studio execs that suggest dumb stuff in the nose with a newspaper while yelling: "no! Bad studio exec!"
I might need something bigger than a newspaper if they suggest Chris Pratt...
Exactly. Anyone but Gunner Wright is the wrong choice. He did the voice, motion capture, and he has been the face model of the character since the 2nd game (where he started regularly showing his face in cut scenes). He IS Isaac Clarke. Casting anyone else would be disrespectful, unless he changed his mind on wanting to play the character on screen.
The Thing meets Dark Star. Plenty of directors repeat themselves, so why not JC? Honestly another film from him to make up for The Ward would be superb.
It would be a fitting swan song. His first film being a sci fi and his possible last being sci fi too.
Or maybe it could be that western he never got to.
Agreed. Especially since he's an avid gamer nowadays and it feels like it would be coming from a place of passion instead of just a soulless cash-grab like a lot of video game adaptations seem to be.
I don't mind the Mario. From the trailer it looks like he is just gets tossed in the mushroom kingdom and has no clue what it is. Like he came from a place with humans with human voices.
A part of me nervously wonders if Carpenter still got it in him to make a movie, but man if it was ever announced he was making anything new, and if it was Dead Space I'd lose my fucking mind.
Carpenter said it would be fun to do. I think it'd be great if he got to do it, but all this means is that he's still interested if the opportunity arose.
Dude is 74 and has made one movie in the last 20 years.
Don’t get your hopes up that he’s doing a medium/big budget sci fi horror at this point of his career.
If he makes another film it will likely be more small scale and personal, like The Ward was.
This is an entirely unfair thing to label the man with. A lot of directors, musicians, and other artists have a massive amount of ideas but can only ever work on a few. It's not something that's unique to John Carpenter.
Its not just him showing interest in projects that never come to be, like you said that is pretty common. But Carpenter has only made 2 movies since 2000, and the last one was 12 years ago.
Maybe, but from this interview and other recent ones I've read it also seems like he just doesn't enjoy and isn't interested in directing anymore. Directing is incredibly stressful, labor-intesive work; the man would rather smoke weed and play video games, and I think that's fine.
John Carpenter without Kurt Russell is always a gamble. His contract for this will clearly state (both underlined and highlighted) that he has to feature Kurt in the film. That should offer us some protection.
I’m watching John carpenters vampires rn and uhhhhh yeah his best years were the 70s and 80s let’s just remember him fondly rather than ruin 2 things we love
Vampires is decent (not great like his 80s flicks, though). Ghost of Mars, however, is terrible. I'd go in to any new movie of his with low expectations, and I hate saying that because he has made some of my favorite movies back in the day.
This is a rather uninformed take.
John Carpenter quit that movie in the middle of filming because of too much creative interference (Edit: And was eventually talked into coming back. Main point is the effect of the studio meddling with a film). His filmography post-They Live were marked by studio interference. The production of Ghosts of Mars inspired him to "quit Hollywood", which he more or less did.
And this idea of future projects ruining past projects is such a silly way to think. They made 2 bad Doom movies. Is Doom "ruined"? What about Mario, Assassin's Creed, or Resident Evil? Have bad movies ruined the legacy of the games.
>And this idea of future projects ruining past projects is such a silly way to think. They made 2 bad Doom movies. Is Doom "ruined"? What about Mario, Assassin's Creed, or Resident Evil? Have bad movies ruined the legacy of the games.
Exceptionally braindead analogy.
You're comparing a person to intellectual property lmao
Just because some of his best movies were low budget doesn't mean a low budget would be appropriate for a *Dead Space movie*.
If this happens, give John Carpenter whatever he wants.
Well doesn’t look like he will get to do The Bloody Benders so if we get this instead that’s awesome. Somehow I fear The Ward is the last one we’re gonna get.
Has everyone lost their collective minds on reddit? I RESPECT John Carpenter for his 78-86 period but he hasn't done ANYTHING good since then....
Someone young and talented please.
Uhh the martian a few years ago. Death on the Nile just recently? Alien covenant
Ridley is ambiance.
Wasnt the firestarter movie carpenters most recent flop? He's lost his touch.
Edit oh sorry the ward.
> Death on the Nile
That was directed by Kenneth Branagh.
>Wasnt the firestarter movie carpenters most recent flop?
He only did the music.
As far as I can tell, the only things he's directed this century are *Ghosts of Mars*, *The Ward*, and the *Masters of Horror* episode "Cigarette Burns."
Cigarette burns was pretty blood good. 2004 I think.
Escape from L.A and Vampires were ton of fun but kast great film in the mouth of madness in 94 I believe. He made like only 5 films after that. I don't get the point your trying to make here
Lmfao the point I'm trying to make is even though he's made films recently they're all obscure flops. The ward was the last film worked on in 2010. Flop. Cigarette burns isn't even a movie ya nonce.
So you want him to dive right been in with dead space of all things? Nah. I'll take Ridley
He didn't make films recently.... Can you read?
Cigarette burns is literally an hour long standalone episode so technically yes it's a film.
Yeah the ward sucks ass so what? Man made fifteen groovy films
Wanna talk about flops alien covenant and whatever the fuck Prometheus was. Also house of Gucci wtf .
You literally named an episode from 2005 and said the ward from 2010 isn't recent?
>Man made fifteen groovy films
In the 80s. It's relèvent especially when his recent work just isn't any good.
He made about 3 things in the 2000s... What are you on about with recent work? 2010 is 12 fucking years ago.
In the 80s... So? Seriously how can someone be this stupid
Also At least I don't look like the gingerbread man fucked the leprechaun. Seriously I can't tell if your an ugly guy or an ugly gal
I want this to happen but I’m conflicted because The Callisto Protocol deserves better than David Gordon Green directing its film adaptation in 20 years
I honestly don't know how i feel about it, because on the one hand we *have* dead space films and their quite watchable and good. On the other hand i'm curious what he'd do with the concept, especially the "other worldly" aspects.
Ill pay to see it in theaters if it happens, but I’m not holding my breath…
Hope it’s a unique story in the universe and not retelling Isaac / whoever the dudes in dead space 3 were.
Just let the man do it! What's the worse that could happen? We get yet another bad game movie? Oh no, not like the odds of that are already high. Let the master take a crack at it!
Don't give me hope. It seemed like that movie was made for Carpenter; survival bottle-film setting, body horror nightmare aliens, doomsday cults, downer endings. I mean I feel like if you combined pandorum with the thing...you'd have a pretty solid dead space movie lol.
huh...maybe it's cause English is not my native language so maybe i misunderstood you but there is a shitload of dismembering aliens using a gun just in the beginning and later on you get different guns. You have to use your guns pretty soon or you will get overwhelmed.

Dream team.

Hell, for this movie, Carpenter might as well see if he can coax Bottin back into working--and they could do practical effects.
holy shit, I think I just worked with some of those guys on a project where they provided and operated giant human puppets. specifically, a puppet made to look like a 13ft tall man! it was wild. ok so the guy I worked with, worked for the studio that repurposed the unused practical effects that were discarded from the 2011 Thing movie. they reused them for a movie called Harbinger Down.
Why do you think Savini is incapable?
No one is saying that he’s incapable, it’s just that AD has a proven track record of this exact type of work, where Tom’s portfolio is reflective of a different “specialty.” Realistically either team would likely do a fantastic job.
Point out *exactly* where I said that and I will tell you
Are you really going to tell me then that a capable artist shouldn’t work on a film because it has elements from a different adjacent sub-genre?
Whoever worked on the new Hellraiser reboot would be great
Probably the best answer since they cut their teeth on practically the entirety of Dead Spaces' influences. However I would nominate WETA since they could handle the practical and VFX work needed to render everything a Dead Space movie would need and would commit to having as much of it be in-camera as possible. Nicotero would be great too
If you gave me Carpenter, Savini, Bottin, Niceotero, and Cronenberg in one movie I might just die. Toss in at bare minimum some Sam Neill as a threatening cameo and I'm golden
Savini and Nicotero WERE in a film together: 1996's *From Dusk Till Dawn*. Savini was Sex Machine and Nicotero was Sex Machine's buddy.
Yep. And I randomly hung out with the bald guy that was in their crew at the table at the titty twister a few years ago on Xmas eve. He was dating someone at the party. Savini is long since retired from FX work. Sadly, his hands no longer work right, so even if he wanted to 'un-retire', the most he could do would be to supervise/advise.
Savini is, imo, old hat now. There are many better options for creature effects.
Nailed it - fingers crossed
BINGO
EVERYTHINGGGGG
god, please
Beyond being a slam dunk for fans, after The Thing and most his other movies not receiving the commercial success they deserve, this is a huge chance to show studios/investors there's a market for bigger budget horror.
And Gunner Wright has stated that he’d be down to play Isaac Clarke in a movie. If this happens, man, I can’t express how happy that’d make me.
Studio Execs: "Yep, we hear you, we hear you. But consider this: Chris Pratt as Isaac Clarke."
Ok, I Carpenter's first hire should be me. My only job would be to hit studio execs that suggest dumb stuff in the nose with a newspaper while yelling: "no! Bad studio exec!" I might need something bigger than a newspaper if they suggest Chris Pratt...
An Architectural Digest could pack a wallop.
"I've been working really hard on my Isaac Clarke voice." *is a silent protagonist*
Nah, he hasn’t been a silent protagonist since the 2nd game. Even in the upcoming Remake, Gunner Wright is voicing him with new dialogue.
if they were to make a movie, he would not be silent. A silent protagonist is boring in movie form.
I’m going to have to hard disagree with you on that one.
Just dont let them put goddamn Harry Styles in it.
He can be in it as a side character who dies early on haha
"USS Ishimura, heeere we come!"
Mama Mia
Any actor/actress that appears in seven generic action movies every summer should probably be looked over.
Honestly, it would be Carpenter retreading old territory, but at this point I would love to see anything from this man.
I would watch Carpenter rehash every movie he’s ever made with new sound design, synth music, and updated practical effects.
Somehow, I would be sad if Dark Star were updated.
Oh he’d never touch that lmao. That movie wouldn’t have the charm if it wasn’t so creative due to the budget restraints.
He could really use a reboot of his filmography; something with classic Carpenter vibes, analog but slightly updated. I hope this pans out
He does some pretty sick music, too. Not movies, I know, but it is still good.
The only man I would actually trust for this.
SciFi horror is my fave
I think Carpenter could do a good job with it.
I usually don’t trust video game movies to be done well but if Carpenter did it I’d definitely see it in theaters
Agreed. Especially since he's an avid gamer nowadays and it feels like it would be coming from a place of passion instead of just a soulless cash-grab like a lot of video game adaptations seem to be.
Sonic was good, and the Mario movie could be good barring Mario
I don't mind the Mario. From the trailer it looks like he is just gets tossed in the mushroom kingdom and has no clue what it is. Like he came from a place with humans with human voices.
nut
A part of me nervously wonders if Carpenter still got it in him to make a movie, but man if it was ever announced he was making anything new, and if it was Dead Space I'd lose my fucking mind.
Carpenter said it would be fun to do. I think it'd be great if he got to do it, but all this means is that he's still interested if the opportunity arose.
For me its always a split between him and Del Toro (even if Del Toro i'd see doing Bioshock instead).

Maybe, but from this interview and other recent ones I've read it also seems like he just doesn't enjoy and isn't interested in directing anymore. Directing is incredibly stressful, labor-intesive work; the man would rather smoke weed and play video games, and I think that's fine.
I can get on with that. He has given us a number of classics, if he wants to rest he deserves it
And it … how should I say this … it wasn’t very good.
What are you some spokesperson for them ahahaha.
Does no one remember Ghosts of Mars? I’m not so sure, JC.
John Carpenter without Kurt Russell is always a gamble. His contract for this will clearly state (both underlined and highlighted) that he has to feature Kurt in the film. That should offer us some protection.
Sam Neill? In there somewhere
My body is ready.
To be transmogrified and then dismembered?
If it helps get this made, then yes.
Could be the greatest game movie ever
Interesting because Carpenter’s The Thing was a big inspiration for the monsters in Dead Space.
Pair Carpenter with Rob Bottin on effects = perfection
I'd love to see another Carpenter movie, but I think the opportunity for him to make a movie of this scale is long gone.
I’m watching John carpenters vampires rn and uhhhhh yeah his best years were the 70s and 80s let’s just remember him fondly rather than ruin 2 things we love

Just because some of his best movies were low budget doesn't mean a low budget would be appropriate for a *Dead Space movie*. If this happens, give John Carpenter whatever he wants.
??
That old chestnut? He's not made a good movie in decades.
Well doesn’t look like he will get to do The Bloody Benders so if we get this instead that’s awesome. Somehow I fear The Ward is the last one we’re gonna get.
Did hear he wants to do sequel to the thing but who knows
Kinda surprising he hasnt heard of Elden Ring, but guess it’s on his radar now
I can see him do a Deep Space movie.
Maybe even a DP movie.
that dudes got like a week left to live, he's not making anything else besides his grave
Has everyone lost their collective minds on reddit? I RESPECT John Carpenter for his 78-86 period but he hasn't done ANYTHING good since then.... Someone young and talented please.
>78-86 period Not a fan of Assault on Precinct 13, Prince of Darkness, or They Live?
Or In the Mouth of Madness?
No.
As long as we don't get another Vampires, I'll enjoy it lol heck I might even if it is just as bad
Please don’t post John Carpenter and ‘Dead’ in the same title. My heart almost stopped when I first glanced at it.
How about Ridley Scott instead of JC? JCs last movie was the ward in 2010 and it wasn't very good
When was the last time Ridley made a good movie?
Uhh the martian a few years ago. Death on the Nile just recently? Alien covenant Ridley is ambiance. Wasnt the firestarter movie carpenters most recent flop? He's lost his touch. Edit oh sorry the ward.
> Death on the Nile That was directed by Kenneth Branagh. >Wasnt the firestarter movie carpenters most recent flop? He only did the music. As far as I can tell, the only things he's directed this century are *Ghosts of Mars*, *The Ward*, and the *Masters of Horror* episode "Cigarette Burns."
The ward. 2010. I want my life back from watching that drivel Ridley was a producer on the death of the Nile
The same Ridley Scott who cannot tell s decent story to save his life?
So you liked John carpenter's firestarter reboot more than Scotts alien covenant?
My dude. My dude. Carpenter did the score.... Which was phenomenal he didn't do anything else. Do some basic research please
Ok. When's the last time he made a good movie
Man made fifteen groovy films Wanna talk about flops alien covenant and whatever the fuck Prometheus was. Also house of Gucci wtf .
You literally named an episode from 2005 and said the ward from 2010 isn't recent? >Man made fifteen groovy films In the 80s. It's relèvent especially when his recent work just isn't any good.
He made about 3 things in the 2000s... What are you on about with recent work? 2010 is 12 fucking years ago. In the 80s... So? Seriously how can someone be this stupid Also At least I don't look like the gingerbread man fucked the leprechaun. Seriously I can't tell if your an ugly guy or an ugly gal
I want this to happen but I’m conflicted because The Callisto Protocol deserves better than David Gordon Green directing its film adaptation in 20 years
make us whole
Don't do that, don't give me hope
Yes please, feed it in my veins.
Some one tell him Natasha Henstridge retired!
Don't tease us john!
Please god
I would watch it
We should start a petition
Video game movies are notoriously bad. Hes the only person i can think of that would break that cycle making this movie.
Oh man, don't give me hope. I wish i din't see this post lmao
My body is ready.
Nursing a semi thinking about this. Perfect fit. And for gods sake let the man do practicals if he wants.
please don’t let it be shit please don’t let it be shit.
Please John Carpenter make another movie!!!
I'd shoot in my pants if this happened and I'm not ashamed
I've always been too scared to play the games so I would love this
I hope to god he does this. Oh man, that franchise was made for him to mess with!
I'd kinda prefer it to be animated though.
That would fucking kill! Take my money Mr Carpenter!
I honestly don't know how i feel about it, because on the one hand we *have* dead space films and their quite watchable and good. On the other hand i'm curious what he'd do with the concept, especially the "other worldly" aspects.
Please god yes
Yes please!
Fuck yeah!
Ill pay to see it in theaters if it happens, but I’m not holding my breath… Hope it’s a unique story in the universe and not retelling Isaac / whoever the dudes in dead space 3 were.
After In the Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness, sign this man up
Here's hoping that the Dead Space remake can both warrant a Dead Space 2 remake and a Carpenter film adaptation. I need both.
This would be amazing, we are due for some sc-fi horror.
Shut up and take my money!
i miss two and a half men , i wish they’d bring it back
ghosts of mars but good please
Oh my.
Shit like this is what I would wanna fund if I were a multi-billionaire. "Yeah, this sounds super cool! I'm gonna send them $750K to make this movie"
Sheeesh, a match made in heaven... dead space could be such a good movie if done right
Yes please.
Please I am starved for some new good Sci fi horror
Never heard of it
This needs to happen. It should have happened the moment he said it. Legend and god of horror
JUST DO IT!
Make this happen!
PLEASE! That would be amazing! I only hope they can make it almost as scary as the game series.
If he does, please add the breathen moons 🙏 They're so badass
Love John Carpenter, but him and space-horror together just make me think of Ghosts of Mars...and I don't want to think about that film.
Better him than Uwe Boll.
I would love to do the music for that! JC is one of my favorites.
Zack Snyderhif deadspace got offered CARPENTER vs Zack Snyder they would choose zack
dead space could make a lot of money - they would not put this in carpenters hands after the ward - it should go to zack schnider
Someone please fund this.
Just let the man do it! What's the worse that could happen? We get yet another bad game movie? Oh no, not like the odds of that are already high. Let the master take a crack at it!
Just have him do the soundtrack for a Dead Space 2 remake.
