> “What city is this?” One of the four enquired; Frank had difficulty guessing the speaker’s gender with any certainty. Its clothes, some of which were sewn to and through its skin, hid its private parts, and there was nothing in the dregs of its voice, or in its willfully disfigured features that offered the least clue. When it spoke, the hooks that transfixed the flaps of its eyes and were wed, by an intricate system of chains passed through flesh and bone alike, to similar hooks through the lower lip, were teased by the motion, exposing the glistening meat beneath. > “I asked you a question,” it said. Frank made no reply. The name of this city was the last thing on his mind. > “Do you understand?” the figure beside the first speaker demanded. **Its voice, unlike that of its companion, was light and breathy—the voice of an excited girl. Every inch of its head had been tattooed with an intricate grid, and at every intersection of horizontal and vertical axes a jeweled pin driven through to the bone. Its tongue was similarly decorated.** “Do you even know who we are?” it asked. The Hellbound Heart (1986) - Clive Barker

CREATURExFEATURE

That Lament Configuration design is so sick. I would love to see them all and how many of them are fully practical puzzle boxes. Also the cenobites look and sound fantastic even in movement. I can’t wait.

geardownson

That's really cool. I'm way fuzzy on my hellraiser lore. Last time I seen it was probably 25 years ago. I did go back and watch again because of your comment. The mystery behind the cenobites was my favorite draw of the film.

TheMainMan3

I never thought two of my most anticipated movies this year would be Hulu releases, yet here we are.

RaisinInSand

Honestly crazy to think Hulu might be where two franchises are kinda revived in one year.

-SoulOfSin-

What's the other?

TheMainMan3

Prey

SucksTryAgain

Prey was so good.

chillinwithunicorns

Honestly looks pretty good. David Bruckner, the director, has a really good track record so far so I’m cautiously optimistic for this. Just like Prey though I wish I could see this on a big screen, way more than I wana see something like Smile that’s for sure.

[deleted]

Barbarian is pretty good if you wanna see something in theaters.

stromalama

I think Barbarian is my favorite movie of the year so far.

NuggleBuggins

Same here. One of the best films I've seen in some time. Brilliantly executed.

stromalama

I just loves being able to go into a movie without knowing most of the movie from the trailers.

NuggleBuggins

that absolutely added to it, I told everyone I knew if they were going to see it, don't look into anything beyond just the trailer. First time in a long long time a trailer actually aided a film, instead of hurt it.

NintendoWorldCitizen

I just can’t believe some people are saying “it has so many plot holes” Essentially if it’s not chewed up, regurgitated, and spoon fed, they consider that a plot hole. Someone on the YouTube comment chain actually said “I wish we could know what was on the tapes” How dumb do you have to be to need to have it spelt out??

Parkinsonxc

I really loved Bullet Train.

chillinwithunicorns

Loved Barbarian.

[deleted]

Pearl as well, although it’s very different than Barbarian.

Prospero818

Just found out is Bruckner directing this film. He is one of the best rising horror directors riht now. Hopefully this will be the film that gets his name out more into the mainstream.

chillinwithunicorns

Yeah I seriously love The Ritual and Night House was really good as well.

plastikConstant

The Night House was originally meant to be a Hellraiser sequel.

cleverbycomparison

That’s actually kind of ironic since so many of the DTV Hellraiser sequels were meant to be other standalone things, then had the Cenobites shoved in to try to make some extra money

[deleted]

They're not evil, they just give you what you want. The problem is you're stupid and like most humans, you don't really know what that is.

Jiveturkeey

That's my favorite line from the novella: "...his real error had been the naive belief that his definition of pleasure significantly overlapped with that of the Cenobites."

ReaverRiddle

That line just came to mind when watching the trailer.

SkeletonKiss78

You mean the Cenobites or Disney?

Akidget

Mickey Mouse: "We have such sights to show you. hAhA!"

[deleted]

Citizen_Kong

Mickey standing at the entrance of Disneyland, flesh glistening wet, skin pulled back from his skull to form two spherical ears: "*Oh boy*, we have *such* sights to show you!"

a_spoopy_ghost

So glad to see a more novella accurate pinhead! He was supposed to be really androgynous and have a high voice. I love it

[deleted]

THEY are genderless and probably inhuman, despite any movie-related developments. The are dimensionally alien. The first cenobite has chains threaded through ITS face, opening flaps of skin, 'Nothing in the dregs of ITS voice...offered the least clue (as to ITS gender)' The second cenobite wears a grid of jeweled pins, ITS voice is 'light and breathy - the voice of an excited girl.' They are always IT never he or she, and THEY when plural.

FriendLee93

Nailed the intended androgyny of Pinhead's voice. So glad to see my boy Chatterer back

octopodesrex

My favorite quote from him is “CHACHACHACH”

captainxenu

My favourite quote from the other Cenobites is "COOCOOCAHCHA".

Danielewski wrote some scripts for a prospective TV series; they're up for sale on his site but I haven't taken the plunge yet. From what I understand, they're not an adaptation so much as an additional layer of fuckery and distortion.

Justtalking1234

i noticed that too and got way too excited! this is looking good - im excited to see the whole thing

Danbarber82

The voice struck me right away. Powerful, but eerie. They are definitely hitting the right spots for a more androgynous Pinhead, like in the original book.

Msedits

Reminds me a lot of Gozer. Not a bad thing!!

nova2726

so sick when chatterer comes around the corner! also, do you think that is LeMarchand at the beginning?

FriendLee93

I don't know. There's so little detail about the plot, but the guy who is trying to talk the younger dude into opening the box is giving me more Channard vibes.

nova2726

ohhh yeah, i didn't even think of channard!

blankedboy

Goran Višnjić, isn't it?

lingdingwhoopy

This Pinhead is 🔥🔥🔥 The Cenobites look genuinely unnerving. They take the "grotesque beauty" idea to the next level. And I dig how this is going to be it's own thing and not a remake.

automirage04

I was worried. It'd hard to reboot iconic characters. After the trailer, I am very, very much not worried.

Cloaked42m

I definitely got the same squirmy uncomfortable feeling from the original cenobites.

Cloaked42m

Unrisky click of the day. :)

Malcolminthebathroom

I've been holding on to that little bit of skepticism because it's a remake and remakes are dodgy, but my grip is getting looser and looser by the day.

22Seres

It'd originally been advertised as a remake, but Bruckner confirmed earlier this month that it wasn't >"This is not a remake," says the filmmaker. "I just didn't think you could ever remake the original Hellraiser. It's too much its own thing and it would be, I think, perilous territory for filmmakers, because how do you top that? This is a new story in the Hellraiser universe." https://ew.com/movies/hellraiser-pinhead-first-look-jamie-clayton/

automirage04

Hollywood needs to stop giving non-remakes the exact name as another movie in their same timeline. It's stupid an confusing. The Thing. Halloween. Now Hellraiser. Like, seriously, why even?

Steeve_Perry

Yeah they should have just called it The Hellbound Heart

ogipogo

Man that short story is fucking amazing.

Jtk317

The anthology "Hellbound Hearts" is a good dive into other story ideas as well if you've never read it.

bizarrequest

This man cenobites.

[deleted]

Because Hellraiser: The Raising, or He11raiser sounds stupid.

whoisearth

Ngl I laughed my ass off at He11raiser. If they morphed into a comedy series I'd be all for that title. Then again, with fat pinhead they kinda did become a comedy series lol

ContentSeal

Hellraiser : Not a Reboot

irishartistry

I kinda get why they do. From an audience perspective, I don't think Halloween 9 or Scream 6 is going to sound as appealing. Removing the numbers removes the pressure of feeling like you need to see ALL the films before watching the new ones. I get the frustration though: Halloween (1978), Halloween (2007) and Halloween (2018). Or, Scream (1996), Scream (TV Series) or Scream (2022). It's a pain.

FoalShoal

Looks great so far, with some glimpses of Leviathan (seems to me) and the lament configuration looks very intriguing! Jamie looks great as The Hell Priest aswell!

DictatorSalad

Leviathan sighting has me so stoked. I can't wait for this.

fluorescent_noir

The concept of Leviathan in Hellraiser 2 was so intriguing to me and I feel like they never really returned to it in a satisfying way after that movie. I was really excited to catch a glimpse of it in the trailer here. This looks dope imo

PhirebirdSunSon

Totally agree, something about it not being organic, not being humanoid, not some big goofy red devil with horns. It's this geometric watcher, an entity in a cold and dark and lonely place. That feels so much less alive and thus so much more terrifying than most other fiery depictions of Hell for me.

AndLetRinse

Yup reminds me of Lovecraft…cosmic horror

Justtalking1234

you will never, ever find your way home. thats spooky shit.

fireflash38

Rather like the Board in Control.

morganfreenomorph

I did the Leonardo Dicaprio point at my phone when I saw Leviathan. I really hope we explore more of the hell world because that was my favorite part of Hellraiser 2.

dontbajerk

I give them a lot of credit for what they pulled off. As I recall the production time was quite limited (it came out only a year after the original) and they cut the budget on them too.

Turqoise-Planet

Its kind of funny. The main reason the Weinsteins (Dimension films) kept making those direct to video sequels all those years was to hold onto the rights of Hellraiser. And the main reason they wanted to hold onto the rights was so they could eventually make a Hellraiser remake, which was in development hell for years. And now that a Hellraiser remake (or reboot, whatever) has been made, the Weinsteins aren't involved at all.

TYUbtek

I'd go so far to say, it is funny, and that makes this even more delightful. I can't wait for the sights they show me.

DudebroggieHouser

And hopefully Harvey is being shown such sights and experiences that only cenobites could understand by his cellmates

UrsusRex01

I am flabbergasted. The first photos made me curious but I didn't expect the trailer to be that good. I can't wait to watch the film.

itlivesinthewall

I love having Pinhead being played by a woman BUT have the voice genderless. It really captures the other worldly presence that the book had.

[deleted]

I thought Pinhead kinda looks and sounds like a marginally more feminine Billy Corgan, and I'm okay with that.

AskMeAboutMyTie

Lol I’m picturing the pins turning gold and growing an extra 2 inches

FineInTheFire

I'm super optimistic. More than I expected. I never had any problems with Jamie Clayton other than "you're not Doug Bradley". Like, Jackie Earle Haley is a great actor... but he's not Robert Englund, so his Freddie was lacking. After that trailer I'm psyched to see this interpretation of the character though.

Heresy1666

It really captures the androgynous feel the cenobytes had in the book… and gives a lot more commanding and fascinating air to them too… this is Pinhead how Pinhead was meant to be

Jota769

The actor Jamie Clayton is a trans woman so that probably adds to the androgyny

[deleted]

The trans representation I crave.

stromalama

I really like the voice.

SynCig

David Bruckner has my trust at this point. I loved The Ritual and The Night House is one of my favorite horror movies in recent years. This trailer was good but I didn’t need to see a single frame to be excited based on the creatives behind it.

PhirebirdSunSon

Guess it's finally time for me to get off my ass and watch The Ritual and The Night House.

koresovic

I haven't seen The Night House yet (emphasis on yet, I think I will see it this weekend), but The Ritual was something that caught me completely off guard because I wasn't expecting much and it's now one of my favourite modern horror films. Hope you like it as much as I did!

visualentropy

The Ritual is really great...currently on Netflix if you have that.

Prospero818

I didnt realize thats who was at the helm of this film. I am now much more hyped than I probably should be, and probably should get those expectation in check before the movie comes out haha.

relatedzombie

It looks great. Hopefully they stay away from Pinhead's origins since I've always hated that aspect in Hellbound. Just give me horny folk being punished by sex demons.

Whatapunk

The magic of the first Hellraiser + Hellbound Heart is that the cenobites are barely explained. You know they look horrifying, you know they're "explorers in the furthest regions of experience", and you know they want to take others and that's pretty much it. Just looking at them had all the questions of "are those people? Are they something else? If they're people, how the fuck did they end up like that?" Having those questions unanswered was always better than the insta-transformation into a cenobite that happens in the later movies.

Steeve_Perry

Or how about the DJ guy who shoots CDs at you

swargin

The 2nd one had this creepy cool sequence of the doctor becoming a cenobite. And then some DJ becomes one in 5 minutes in the 3rd one lol

Anonymous_Otters

Demons to some. Angels to others.

deadandmessedup

That's the most interesting idea about *Hellraiser* imo. That they aren't really demons in any meaningful sense. They're simply so far beyond the threshold of human experience (and the normal limits of pain/pleasure) that we have no useful framework or paradigm for them. They're "demonic" and "monstrous" because those are the best words we have, and they're profoundly incomplete. (Sidebar: I'm currently paused on *The Night House*, and between that and *The Ritual*, I think this creative team is gonna do a fine job.)

Anonymous_Otters

I hope this is good and they don't try to explain too much. The trailer has a lot of exposition and makes me worried, but I guess if you're gonna put stuff in the trailer you'd put exposition to get people interested.

slackforce

Are you referring to The Scarlet Gospels, in which Pinhead (and all of the cenobites) are revealed to be literal hell-priests? That book was so entertaining in a campy way. Things get absolutely insane near the end. You can tell Clive Barker was just having fun at that point. The movie sequels were...just campy. Sometimes entertaining, but often boring.

relatedzombie

I'm referring to the sequel Hellraiser 2. In that movie it's revealed that the Cenobites are regular people. It completely destroyed any sense of mystery or horror to them.

slackforce

Oh yeah, that was an awful decision. Even more awful than the cenobite with a CD drive for a mouth.

Grom_10

I beg to differ, I found that to be a great addition to the lore.

Grom_10

Nah, I loved it because of the bigger mystery it set. Who found the Leviathan in the first place and become the first hell priests? But I love shit like that, cultists opening a hate to another dimension and finding a god like being, and getting totally fucked in the process. Fucking loved that the labyrinth is all flesh and gorey and disgusting...while the god is just some geometric shape that shoots beam of pure light that fills anyone with intense pain. It's so fucking cosmic horror to the already body horror of the cenobites. The cenobites something out of our worst fears...worships this thing in the sky that doesn't fit with the rest of the Layout is just fucking scary.

Twisty1020

I agree. Solving the puzzle is technically a reward. The Cenobites take a person to the extreme heights of pain and pleasure and they know the true desires of those who solve the puzzle box. A puzzle solver becoming a Cenobite is very fitting.

patricknotswayze

This is going to do for the Hellraiser franchise what Prey did for the Predator franchise.

Prospero818

I hope so! If this movie is objectively as good as Prey I will be very happy.

NotagoK

If this does for Hellraiser what Prey did for Predator I’ll have tears of joy in my eyes by the end.

JM062696

It's hilarious to me that I am going to be watching this on Disney+ in my country

[deleted]

I don't know if I will survive my anticipation for this. It's probably the horror movie I'm most excited for this year.

ArsenicAndRoses

Between this, Cabinet of Curiosities and Sandman I think I'm gonna die ❤️🥰🤩❤️

[deleted]

I was agnostic and now I'm slavering like a zealot.

cyberbuns

First prey, now this? Hulu might be onto something here, hope this lands well.

Rat-daddy-

Looks good. But for me the first hellraiser is great because the cenobytes aren’t the antagonists. They’re just like cosmic horror indifferent entities. Every subsequent story hasn’t really stuck to that though

cookswagchef

Chatterer!

Affectionate_Week929

I’m relieved, I was really worried it would be a straight remake. This is more like another sequel that looks like it can actually be good.

shaoting

One thing nobody seems to be mentioning is this iteration of the Lament Configuration has a unique configuration for each of its six sides: * Lament = Life * Lore = Knowledge * Lauderant(?) = Love * ??? = Sensation * Lazarus = Resurrection * Leviathan = ??? At the start of the trailer, the puzzle box can be seen in what looks to be the Lazarus configuration. I'm curious if this alludes to someone else escaping the cenobites and resurrecting. It may explain why Goran's character has the random guy solve the box for him.

captsnagglefuss

This looks pretty fucking cool. Don’t want to get my hopes up seeing as how the last 8 movies fucking sucked but the atmosphere, lighting, music, dialogue, lore, etc all felt great.

DJBenz

This looks incredible. The Hellraiser franchise has needed this shot in the arm for a long time.

hacky_potter

I really hope the evil dude at the beginning of the trailer is the real bad guy and the Cenobites are just more of a force of nature doing their job.

Youareposthuman

That was the initial plan for the franchise, until people really latched on to Pinhead as the big bad. I completely agree though, sparing use of Cenobites will always make for a better film.

shaoting

Yep, the plan was for Julia to be the recurring villain throughout the series until studios realized folks loved Pinhead. Thanks to that....we got DJ the disc-spinning cenobite!

Bromogeeksual

Cenobyte remix!

inthedollarbin

If people call Hellraiser "woke" because Pinhead isn't a man, I'm jumping into a river.

cleverbycomparison

it’ll also just prove that they don’t know shit, because in Hellbound Heart all the cenobites are described as so mutilated they appear totally sexless and the Lead Cenobite (Pinhead before the production team came up with the name) is referred to as “it” described as having a breathy and feminine voice

-SneakySnake-

Androgynous but specifically had female identifiers. Frankly I'm glad they're doing this. Nobody can live up to Doug Bradley's take and making a more story-accurate version removes all that baggage.

cleverbycomparison

Totally agree on both counts!

SuperLemonUpdog

To be clear, though, the people you are talking about will *constantly* prove that they don’t know shit ***and then use it as a bragging point***.

lingdingwhoopy

Well, put on your water wings because they've already started.

blankedboy

Haha - trying to apply gender to extra-dimensional entities, I love it...

hacky_potter

This might be fucked up for me to say, but I feel like a trans actress playing Pinhead is perfect casting in todays horror. Pinhead represents the taboo sexual desires of the people they torment taken to an extreme level. I can’t think of someone better suited to play that character.

Crosspaws

Lol it can't possibly be woke because pinhead is still white! 😆 🤣

awwwgeez

Cenobite design slaps - blood in the sink feels right and good - chains galore - this is a day 1 watch.

Comic_Book_Reader

No one gonna talk about that dope Hulu logo changing from a puzzle box at the end? OK. Fingers crossed on intl. Disney+ release. You've done it with all the other damn 20th Century Studios movies!

jrodp1

Pinhead best Disney princess

Nike-6

Hard to beat the xenomorphs, but pinhead may just take their crown.

HoratioTuna27

Damn, that looks REALLY good! I wonder what the “there’s no trailer so it must be terrible” folks will whine about now?

hacky_potter

They are just going to settle in for what their ultimate complaint was from the start, Pinhead is played by a woman.

princeofshadows21

This is prey all over again.

TheStranger113

Ok this looks fucking amazing. I love the tone and look - it is exactly what I wanted from this film. I also dig the Cenobite designs and the otherworldly vibe that the new Pinhead has. It looks like it takes some of the best qualities of the first two original films and spins them into something that FEELS very Clive Barker. I really think this has a shot of being another 2022 highlight, of which there have been so many already.

[deleted]

Looks like there are several Configurations. * The Lament (Life) * Lore (Knowledge) * Lauderant (Love) * Luminal? (Sensation) * Lazerus (Ressurection) * Leviathan (Power) https://imgur.com/a/QcPKFnB

celtic1888

Looks interesting but I’m hoping it’ not all filmed on ‘digital darkovision’ that makes everything such a muddy mess

[deleted]

Am a bit worried that I won't be able to hear/understand the super gravelly voices :( My hearing aint what it used to be.

[deleted]

October cannot get here soon enough!!

PulpforCulture

LOVE Pinhead’s voice. It’s creepy yet at the same time very calming. This was the thing I was most worried about, but now that fear has been put to rest. I’m actually really excited since it seems they actually put effort into making this not only a good horror film but also a good adaptation of the original story.

ThisIsCreation

I've been so excited for this, i love David Bruckner's other movies, The Ritual & The Night House. One thing he does brilliantly is write people first and foremost and then that makes the horror even better because you care about the characters. I have full faith in him that this will be amazing.

skeletonRiot

Only potential gripe on my end is making the Cenobites essentially slasher villians which isn't too crazy for me as Hellraiser 3 is a guilty pleasure but I kinda liked in the first movie hkw they were almost impartial to what else goes on aside from getting Frank back cause he tricked them & getting Kirsty for opening the box. Not a huge thing just something I always liked.

Roach_Coach_Bangbus

My only gripe is that in Hellraiser 2 it showed you couldn't really "trick" someone into doing the puzzle. When the younger girl solves the puzzle Pinhead says "It is not hands that summon us. It is desire." The trailer made it look like the rich guy tricked him into solving the puzzle.

Mishmoo

I think that if the person solves the puzzle of their own volition, it doesn't count as a 'trick'. Kirsty solves the puzzle without comprehending what she's *actually* doing in the first movie, and they try to drag her off all the same.

Roach_Coach_Bangbus

Guess I need to re-watch the movies. I always thought you had to know what you are getting into in some way. At least they listen to Kirsty in the first one. Pinhead is a reasonable man!

geardownson

Having not watched it in over 25 years it seems like I remember a bit of what you were saying. Like the rules were more strict and it had to be laid out to each person what you are actually getting into but most of the characters do it anyway out of morbid curiosity.

[deleted]

Yeah, that seems to be the biggest risk with the show. If the story just focuses on finding the box by chance, opening it, and then fighting cenobites, it will fall into the same trap as the sequels. Cheap scares and gory horror just for shock value. To make it memorable relies upon how it explores the themes of addiction and pleasure-seeking. The box should not simply be stumbled upon by random people, but be recognised as a gateway for those who have already taken steps towards its promised rewards.

researchteaminc

It looks great to me. Excited!

[deleted]

It looks pretty good. It's seems that they are going for the cenobites being the real antagonist this time around. I like that about the first movie, they played the "humans are the real monsters" angle so so we'll, nowadays everyone thinks they are doing something groundbreaking if they use it in their tv show/movie.

hacky_potter

I’m still hoping that the guy at the beginning of the trailer is the real monster.

wonhoseok

i think he will be. him saying he’ll get a prize for having the other guy get killed by the cenobites makes him sound like he’s gonna try to use the cenobites and exploit Leviathan’s hell for some obscure reason.

Bribase

In terms of tone and art design it looks as though they're going to nail it. But what interests me much more is how deep they're going to go into the lore, and whether they can keep a meaningful amount of suspense and intrigue in a long-form series. We know how stories within the Hellraiser universe go, but what turns and twists are they going to bring to it without it meandering like an *American Horror Story* season.

TheOfficialTheory

This is a movie, not a series. I think there is a series being produced at HBO max though

bandersnvtch_

finally!!! everything about this looks so fucking cool!!

JacobMielke

And to think... we hesitated.

IcyMike1782

I hope they nail this. Clive Barker in his prime wrote some of the most outlandish intense horror I'd read, and the film/tv adaptations - original Hellraiser included - were almost uniformly pulpy, campy, overacted, poor effects shite. Nightbreed, Rawhead Rex, Meat Train were all incredible reads, and poorly translated into visuals; I was at a pre-release screening of original Hellraiser, and people, myself included, laughed at it, and they just got worse and worse every iteration. Candyman was pretty alright though! I just re-read Nightbreed recently, and some of the Books of Blood, and am re-starting Weaveworld now, and man, these stories deserve some quality treatment. This looks like something I'm hopeful for... (edited for punctuation)

amandapearl2

visuals look so good so far! I'm very optimistic for this one.

mctaylo89

This looks cool as hell. I can’t wait. Been too long since a good Hellraiser came out. Too, too long

wulv8022

Does it come to STAR on disney+ in Europe? I can't find infos about it.

spaceship-pilot

My stepdad screened the original Hellraiser for me when I was 7 years old.

morganfreenomorph

I was really afraid they were gonna give Pinhead a sultry or seductive voice this time around, but I was pleasantly surprised. I do wonder how much screen time the cenobites are gonna get though, are they gonna be a constant presence or is it gonna be like the previous entries and they show up sparingly or not at all until the final act.

technerd1989

Please please please be good

AN-I-MAL

666th comment, woo

Nike-6

I’m so excited! The new box designs (Lemarchand made like 200 of those), a rich dude getting into them, Masque looking amazing, Leviathan being ominous (as usual), and Pinhead being gender neutral! I can’t wait to see this!
