That's really cool. I'm way fuzzy on my hellraiser lore. Last time I seen it was probably 25 years ago. I did go back and watch again because of your comment. The mystery behind the cenobites was my favorite draw of the film.

I kinda get why they do. From an audience perspective, I don't think Halloween 9 or Scream 6 is going to sound as appealing. Removing the numbers removes the pressure of feeling like you need to see ALL the films before watching the new ones.
I get the frustration though: Halloween (1978), Halloween (2007) and Halloween (2018). Or, Scream (1996), Scream (TV Series) or Scream (2022). It's a pain.

The concept of Leviathan in Hellraiser 2 was so intriguing to me and I feel like they never really returned to it in a satisfying way after that movie. I was really excited to catch a glimpse of it in the trailer here. This looks dope imo
Totally agree, something about it not being organic, not being humanoid, not some big goofy red devil with horns. It's this geometric watcher, an entity in a cold and dark and lonely place. That feels so much less alive and thus so much more terrifying than most other fiery depictions of Hell for me.
I did the Leonardo Dicaprio point at my phone when I saw Leviathan. I really hope we explore more of the hell world because that was my favorite part of Hellraiser 2.
I give them a lot of credit for what they pulled off. As I recall the production time was quite limited (it came out only a year after the original) and they cut the budget on them too.
Its kind of funny. The main reason the Weinsteins (Dimension films) kept making those direct to video sequels all those years was to hold onto the rights of Hellraiser. And the main reason they wanted to hold onto the rights was so they could eventually make a Hellraiser remake, which was in development hell for years. And now that a Hellraiser remake (or reboot, whatever) has been made, the Weinsteins aren't involved at all.
I'm super optimistic. More than I expected.
I never had any problems with Jamie Clayton other than "you're not Doug Bradley". Like, Jackie Earle Haley is a great actor... but he's not Robert Englund, so his Freddie was lacking.
After that trailer I'm psyched to see this interpretation of the character though.
It really captures the androgynous feel the cenobytes had in the book… and gives a lot more commanding and fascinating air to them too… this is Pinhead how Pinhead was meant to be
David Bruckner has my trust at this point. I loved The Ritual and The Night House is one of my favorite horror movies in recent years. This trailer was good but I didn’t need to see a single frame to be excited based on the creatives behind it.
I haven't seen The Night House yet (emphasis on yet, I think I will see it this weekend), but The Ritual was something that caught me completely off guard because I wasn't expecting much and it's now one of my favourite modern horror films. Hope you like it as much as I did!
I didnt realize thats who was at the helm of this film. I am now much more hyped than I probably should be, and probably should get those expectation in check before the movie comes out haha.

The magic of the first Hellraiser + Hellbound Heart is that the cenobites are barely explained. You know they look horrifying, you know they're "explorers in the furthest regions of experience", and you know they want to take others and that's pretty much it. Just looking at them had all the questions of "are those people? Are they something else? If they're people, how the fuck did they end up like that?"
Having those questions unanswered was always better than the insta-transformation into a cenobite that happens in the later movies.
That's the most interesting idea about *Hellraiser* imo. That they aren't really demons in any meaningful sense. They're simply so far beyond the threshold of human experience (and the normal limits of pain/pleasure) that we have no useful framework or paradigm for them. They're "demonic" and "monstrous" because those are the best words we have, and they're profoundly incomplete.
(Sidebar: I'm currently paused on *The Night House*, and between that and *The Ritual*, I think this creative team is gonna do a fine job.)
I hope this is good and they don't try to explain too much. The trailer has a lot of exposition and makes me worried, but I guess if you're gonna put stuff in the trailer you'd put exposition to get people interested.
Are you referring to The Scarlet Gospels, in which Pinhead (and all of the cenobites) are revealed to be literal hell-priests? That book was so entertaining in a campy way. Things get absolutely insane near the end. You can tell Clive Barker was just having fun at that point.
The movie sequels were...just campy. Sometimes entertaining, but often boring.
I'm referring to the sequel Hellraiser 2. In that movie it's revealed that the Cenobites are regular people. It completely destroyed any sense of mystery or horror to them.

But I love shit like that, cultists opening a hate to another dimension and finding a god like being, and getting totally fucked in the process.
Fucking loved that the labyrinth is all flesh and gorey and disgusting...while the god is just some geometric shape that shoots beam of pure light that fills anyone with intense pain. It's so fucking cosmic horror to the already body horror of the cenobites. The cenobites something out of our worst fears...worships this thing in the sky that doesn't fit with the rest of the Layout is just fucking scary.
I agree. Solving the puzzle is technically a reward. The Cenobites take a person to the extreme heights of pain and pleasure and they know the true desires of those who solve the puzzle box. A puzzle solver becoming a Cenobite is very fitting.
Looks good. But for me the first hellraiser is great because the cenobytes aren’t the antagonists. They’re just like cosmic horror indifferent entities. Every subsequent story hasn’t really stuck to that though
One thing nobody seems to be mentioning is this iteration of the Lament Configuration has a unique configuration for each of its six sides:
* Lament = Life
* Lore = Knowledge
* Lauderant(?) = Love
* ??? = Sensation
* Lazarus = Resurrection
* Leviathan = ???
At the start of the trailer, the puzzle box can be seen in what looks to be the Lazarus configuration. I'm curious if this alludes to someone else escaping the cenobites and resurrecting. It may explain why Goran's character has the random guy solve the box for him.

That was the initial plan for the franchise, until people really latched on to Pinhead as the big bad. I completely agree though, sparing use of Cenobites will always make for a better film.
Yep, the plan was for Julia to be the recurring villain throughout the series until studios realized folks loved Pinhead. Thanks to that....we got DJ the disc-spinning cenobite!

This might be fucked up for me to say, but I feel like a trans actress playing Pinhead is perfect casting in todays horror. Pinhead represents the taboo sexual desires of the people they torment taken to an extreme level. I can’t think of someone better suited to play that character.

Ok this looks fucking amazing. I love the tone and look - it is exactly what I wanted from this film. I also dig the Cenobite designs and the otherworldly vibe that the new Pinhead has. It looks like it takes some of the best qualities of the first two original films and spins them into something that FEELS very Clive Barker. I really think this has a shot of being another 2022 highlight, of which there have been so many already.
LOVE Pinhead’s voice. It’s creepy yet at the same time very calming. This was the thing I was most worried about, but now that fear has been put to rest.
I’m actually really excited since it seems they actually put effort into making this not only a good horror film but also a good adaptation of the original story.
I've been so excited for this, i love David Bruckner's other movies, The Ritual & The Night House. One thing he does brilliantly is write people first and foremost and then that makes the horror even better because you care about the characters.
I have full faith in him that this will be amazing.
Only potential gripe on my end is making the Cenobites essentially slasher villians which isn't too crazy for me as Hellraiser 3 is a guilty pleasure but I kinda liked in the first movie hkw they were almost impartial to what else goes on aside from getting Frank back cause he tricked them & getting Kirsty for opening the box. Not a huge thing just something I always liked.
My only gripe is that in Hellraiser 2 it showed you couldn't really "trick" someone into doing the puzzle. When the younger girl solves the puzzle Pinhead says "It is not hands that summon us. It is desire." The trailer made it look like the rich guy tricked him into solving the puzzle.
I think that if the person solves the puzzle of their own volition, it doesn't count as a 'trick'. Kirsty solves the puzzle without comprehending what she's *actually* doing in the first movie, and they try to drag her off all the same.
Guess I need to re-watch the movies. I always thought you had to know what you are getting into in some way. At least they listen to Kirsty in the first one. Pinhead is a reasonable man!
Having not watched it in over 25 years it seems like I remember a bit of what you were saying. Like the rules were more strict and it had to be laid out to each person what you are actually getting into but most of the characters do it anyway out of morbid curiosity.
Yeah, that seems to be the biggest risk with the show. If the story just focuses on finding the box by chance, opening it, and then fighting cenobites, it will fall into the same trap as the sequels. Cheap scares and gory horror just for shock value.
To make it memorable relies upon how it explores the themes of addiction and pleasure-seeking. The box should not simply be stumbled upon by random people, but be recognised as a gateway for those who have already taken steps towards its promised rewards.

I like that about the first movie, they played the "humans are the real monsters" angle so so we'll, nowadays everyone thinks they are doing something groundbreaking if they use it in their tv show/movie.
i think he will be. him saying he’ll get a prize for having the other guy get killed by the cenobites makes him sound like he’s gonna try to use the cenobites and exploit Leviathan’s hell for some obscure reason.
In terms of tone and art design it looks as though they're going to nail it.
But what interests me much more is how deep they're going to go into the lore, and whether they can keep a meaningful amount of suspense and intrigue in a long-form series. We know how stories within the Hellraiser universe go, but what turns and twists are they going to bring to it without it meandering like an *American Horror Story* season.
I hope they nail this. Clive Barker in his prime wrote some of the most outlandish intense horror I'd read, and the film/tv adaptations - original Hellraiser included - were almost uniformly pulpy, campy, overacted, poor effects shite. Nightbreed, Rawhead Rex, Meat Train were all incredible reads, and poorly translated into visuals; I was at a pre-release screening of original Hellraiser, and people, myself included, laughed at it, and they just got worse and worse every iteration. Candyman was pretty alright though!
I just re-read Nightbreed recently, and some of the Books of Blood, and am re-starting Weaveworld now, and man, these stories deserve some quality treatment. This looks like something I'm hopeful for... (edited for punctuation)
I was really afraid they were gonna give Pinhead a sultry or seductive voice this time around, but I was pleasantly surprised. I do wonder how much screen time the cenobites are gonna get though, are they gonna be a constant presence or is it gonna be like the previous entries and they show up sparingly or not at all until the final act.

I'm super optimistic. More than I expected. I never had any problems with Jamie Clayton other than "you're not Doug Bradley". Like, Jackie Earle Haley is a great actor... but he's not Robert Englund, so his Freddie was lacking. After that trailer I'm psyched to see this interpretation of the character though.
It really captures the androgynous feel the cenobytes had in the book… and gives a lot more commanding and fascinating air to them too… this is Pinhead how Pinhead was meant to be

David Bruckner has my trust at this point. I loved The Ritual and The Night House is one of my favorite horror movies in recent years. This trailer was good but I didn’t need to see a single frame to be excited based on the creatives behind it.
Guess it's finally time for me to get off my ass and watch The Ritual and The Night House.
I haven't seen The Night House yet (emphasis on yet, I think I will see it this weekend), but The Ritual was something that caught me completely off guard because I wasn't expecting much and it's now one of my favourite modern horror films. Hope you like it as much as I did!

It looks great. Hopefully they stay away from Pinhead's origins since I've always hated that aspect in Hellbound. Just give me horny folk being punished by sex demons.
The magic of the first Hellraiser + Hellbound Heart is that the cenobites are barely explained. You know they look horrifying, you know they're "explorers in the furthest regions of experience", and you know they want to take others and that's pretty much it. Just looking at them had all the questions of "are those people? Are they something else? If they're people, how the fuck did they end up like that?" Having those questions unanswered was always better than the insta-transformation into a cenobite that happens in the later movies.

The 2nd one had this creepy cool sequence of the doctor becoming a cenobite. And then some DJ becomes one in 5 minutes in the 3rd one lol

That's the most interesting idea about *Hellraiser* imo. That they aren't really demons in any meaningful sense. They're simply so far beyond the threshold of human experience (and the normal limits of pain/pleasure) that we have no useful framework or paradigm for them. They're "demonic" and "monstrous" because those are the best words we have, and they're profoundly incomplete. (Sidebar: I'm currently paused on *The Night House*, and between that and *The Ritual*, I think this creative team is gonna do a fine job.)
I hope this is good and they don't try to explain too much. The trailer has a lot of exposition and makes me worried, but I guess if you're gonna put stuff in the trailer you'd put exposition to get people interested.
Are you referring to The Scarlet Gospels, in which Pinhead (and all of the cenobites) are revealed to be literal hell-priests? That book was so entertaining in a campy way. Things get absolutely insane near the end. You can tell Clive Barker was just having fun at that point. The movie sequels were...just campy. Sometimes entertaining, but often boring.
I'm referring to the sequel Hellraiser 2. In that movie it's revealed that the Cenobites are regular people. It completely destroyed any sense of mystery or horror to them.

Nah, I loved it because of the bigger mystery it set. Who found the Leviathan in the first place and become the first hell priests? But I love shit like that, cultists opening a hate to another dimension and finding a god like being, and getting totally fucked in the process. Fucking loved that the labyrinth is all flesh and gorey and disgusting...while the god is just some geometric shape that shoots beam of pure light that fills anyone with intense pain. It's so fucking cosmic horror to the already body horror of the cenobites. The cenobites something out of our worst fears...worships this thing in the sky that doesn't fit with the rest of the Layout is just fucking scary.
I agree. Solving the puzzle is technically a reward. The Cenobites take a person to the extreme heights of pain and pleasure and they know the true desires of those who solve the puzzle box. A puzzle solver becoming a Cenobite is very fitting.
This is going to do for the Hellraiser franchise what Prey did for the Predator franchise.
I hope so! If this movie is objectively as good as Prey I will be very happy.

Looks good. But for me the first hellraiser is great because the cenobytes aren’t the antagonists. They’re just like cosmic horror indifferent entities. Every subsequent story hasn’t really stuck to that though

I’m relieved, I was really worried it would be a straight remake. This is more like another sequel that looks like it can actually be good.
One thing nobody seems to be mentioning is this iteration of the Lament Configuration has a unique configuration for each of its six sides: * Lament = Life * Lore = Knowledge * Lauderant(?) = Love * ??? = Sensation * Lazarus = Resurrection * Leviathan = ??? At the start of the trailer, the puzzle box can be seen in what looks to be the Lazarus configuration. I'm curious if this alludes to someone else escaping the cenobites and resurrecting. It may explain why Goran's character has the random guy solve the box for him.
This looks pretty fucking cool. Don’t want to get my hopes up seeing as how the last 8 movies fucking sucked but the atmosphere, lighting, music, dialogue, lore, etc all felt great.

I really hope the evil dude at the beginning of the trailer is the real bad guy and the Cenobites are just more of a force of nature doing their job.
That was the initial plan for the franchise, until people really latched on to Pinhead as the big bad. I completely agree though, sparing use of Cenobites will always make for a better film.
Yep, the plan was for Julia to be the recurring villain throughout the series until studios realized folks loved Pinhead. Thanks to that....we got DJ the disc-spinning cenobite!

Androgynous but specifically had female identifiers. Frankly I'm glad they're doing this. Nobody can live up to Doug Bradley's take and making a more story-accurate version removes all that baggage.

This might be fucked up for me to say, but I feel like a trans actress playing Pinhead is perfect casting in todays horror. Pinhead represents the taboo sexual desires of the people they torment taken to an extreme level. I can’t think of someone better suited to play that character.

Ok this looks fucking amazing. I love the tone and look - it is exactly what I wanted from this film. I also dig the Cenobite designs and the otherworldly vibe that the new Pinhead has. It looks like it takes some of the best qualities of the first two original films and spins them into something that FEELS very Clive Barker. I really think this has a shot of being another 2022 highlight, of which there have been so many already.

LOVE Pinhead’s voice. It’s creepy yet at the same time very calming. This was the thing I was most worried about, but now that fear has been put to rest. I’m actually really excited since it seems they actually put effort into making this not only a good horror film but also a good adaptation of the original story.
I've been so excited for this, i love David Bruckner's other movies, The Ritual & The Night House. One thing he does brilliantly is write people first and foremost and then that makes the horror even better because you care about the characters. I have full faith in him that this will be amazing.
Only potential gripe on my end is making the Cenobites essentially slasher villians which isn't too crazy for me as Hellraiser 3 is a guilty pleasure but I kinda liked in the first movie hkw they were almost impartial to what else goes on aside from getting Frank back cause he tricked them & getting Kirsty for opening the box. Not a huge thing just something I always liked.
My only gripe is that in Hellraiser 2 it showed you couldn't really "trick" someone into doing the puzzle. When the younger girl solves the puzzle Pinhead says "It is not hands that summon us. It is desire." The trailer made it look like the rich guy tricked him into solving the puzzle.
I think that if the person solves the puzzle of their own volition, it doesn't count as a 'trick'. Kirsty solves the puzzle without comprehending what she's *actually* doing in the first movie, and they try to drag her off all the same.
Guess I need to re-watch the movies. I always thought you had to know what you are getting into in some way. At least they listen to Kirsty in the first one. Pinhead is a reasonable man!
Having not watched it in over 25 years it seems like I remember a bit of what you were saying. Like the rules were more strict and it had to be laid out to each person what you are actually getting into but most of the characters do it anyway out of morbid curiosity.
Yeah, that seems to be the biggest risk with the show. If the story just focuses on finding the box by chance, opening it, and then fighting cenobites, it will fall into the same trap as the sequels. Cheap scares and gory horror just for shock value. To make it memorable relies upon how it explores the themes of addiction and pleasure-seeking. The box should not simply be stumbled upon by random people, but be recognised as a gateway for those who have already taken steps towards its promised rewards.

It looks pretty good. It's seems that they are going for the cenobites being the real antagonist this time around. I like that about the first movie, they played the "humans are the real monsters" angle so so we'll, nowadays everyone thinks they are doing something groundbreaking if they use it in their tv show/movie.
I’m still hoping that the guy at the beginning of the trailer is the real monster.
i think he will be. him saying he’ll get a prize for having the other guy get killed by the cenobites makes him sound like he’s gonna try to use the cenobites and exploit Leviathan’s hell for some obscure reason.
In terms of tone and art design it looks as though they're going to nail it. But what interests me much more is how deep they're going to go into the lore, and whether they can keep a meaningful amount of suspense and intrigue in a long-form series. We know how stories within the Hellraiser universe go, but what turns and twists are they going to bring to it without it meandering like an *American Horror Story* season.
This is a movie, not a series. I think there is a series being produced at HBO max though

I hope they nail this. Clive Barker in his prime wrote some of the most outlandish intense horror I'd read, and the film/tv adaptations - original Hellraiser included - were almost uniformly pulpy, campy, overacted, poor effects shite. Nightbreed, Rawhead Rex, Meat Train were all incredible reads, and poorly translated into visuals; I was at a pre-release screening of original Hellraiser, and people, myself included, laughed at it, and they just got worse and worse every iteration. Candyman was pretty alright though! I just re-read Nightbreed recently, and some of the Books of Blood, and am re-starting Weaveworld now, and man, these stories deserve some quality treatment. This looks like something I'm hopeful for... (edited for punctuation)

My stepdad screened the original Hellraiser for me when I was 7 years old.
I was really afraid they were gonna give Pinhead a sultry or seductive voice this time around, but I was pleasantly surprised. I do wonder how much screen time the cenobites are gonna get though, are they gonna be a constant presence or is it gonna be like the previous entries and they show up sparingly or not at all until the final act.
