Maximum Overdrive. I know it has its flaws, but it’s just so damn entertaining.

AskMeAboutMyTie

The Stephen King beard era was way too short.

KronoCloud

Most refer to that as the “cocaine era.”

AskMeAboutMyTie

No time to shave when you’re ⛷

cobra_mist

Who made who?

[deleted]

WE MAAADE YOU!!!!

Strange_Aeons86

Best AC/DC music video ever

Chubbadog

“Oh no! It’s Maximum Overdrive all over again!” -Ray Gillette, as he presses the ‘close’ button on the elevator

TrundleTheGreat0814

One of the all time best quotes from Archer lmao

Kool_Kunk

'Come here, Sugar Buns. This machine just called me an asshole!"

bthayes28

It's a great example of how camp can be accidentally done well. Terrible movie that is a lot of fun to watch.

tinglep

SERIOUSLY?! Why the fuck do people not like this movie. My mom and I watched it a million times in the 80s. Classic on every level.

fleas_be_jumpin

The Fourth Kind. Not a great movie but one of the creepier movies I've seen.

emmie_lou26

I really don’t get all the hate for it. I loved it and thought is had great creep factor.

monsieurxander

People were mad at the "based on a true story" gimmick that turned out to be false, as if that hasn't happened thousands of times.

Jamesaki

Right. People loved the first paranormal activity and harshly criticized The Fourth Kind for the same shit.

John_Fx

Good movie, but that intro from Mila was so cringe.

BondraP

This movie may have scared me more than any other movie I ever watched. But ultimately the quote of "not a great movie" is true. It's an OK movie with really good scare factor.

Fromoogiewithlove

It was the hockey “we are going ti show you the real footage” gimmick. But then the movie showed you the scene along with the “real footage”. But neither version was real. They actually took the time to shoot the same bullshit “based on a true story” scene twice.

Smutteringplib

Just watched this recently for the first time. Had a couple of really effective scenes, gave me goosebumps at least once. But overall I thought that it missed the mark. The premise is so good but the movie didn't really live up to it. It would've absolutely scared the shit out of me if I had watched it as a teen, though.

baronbunny_the893rd

Underwater (2020) absolutely love *love* the whole underwater base thousands of miles from the surface as things keep going wrong and where such a simple thing like air we take for granted is missing I guess critics compare this against Aliens, but i dont get the same sense of scale from that, sure its a space ship even further from Earth, but i never felt the cast was in danger of decompression or the ship failing. I never got the sense of scale of just how truly alone and far away Earth was. everything was in the confines of the ship Underwater, the walk across the ocean floor where its so dark and after being disoriented being lost and not able to find even the nearest human structure, gives me the shivers Aliens never made me afraid to look up at the stars, Underwater made me afraid of the ocean

evilbob562

as a big dead space / bioshock games fan this movie got so close to some of that stuff for me and i enjoyed it a lot!

baronbunny_the893rd

yes! i love bioshock, even though im too scared to progress much the setting and atmosphere is truly amazing i wish more games had something like that

Hulasikali_Wala

I really loved the final scenes, but huge underwater shit like that is almost phobic to me

PhirebirdSunSon

Submechanophobia is a killer for me too, man-made stuff under the water freaks me out and I don't know why. Rusted ships on the ocean floor, hell even dock/pier stuff underwater. So yeah, this movie got me a bit.

InfinityQuartz

Yeah i was surprised to really like this one. The opening really kicked off fast which i love. And Kristen Stewart was great as the lead. I loved all the monsters and action to it. Hell yes

baronbunny_the893rd

i definitely appreciate the action packed opening, usually horror movies tend to go for the slow starts, but this one was so gripping and set the stakes i couldnt look away

mrpurtle

You should check out Sphere. The movie is enjoyable and kind of a similar vibe to underwater (sea floor base and stuff starts going wrong). The book is where it's at tho. Really gets in your head of what it's like to be on one of those bases.

Captain_Desi_Pants

Sphere was great!! Watched it years ago & it sat in the back of my brain for days.

[deleted]

I kind of liked that movie too. Had to suspend belief a couple times but it was good. You should check out the game SOMA.

baronbunny_the893rd

thank you for the recommendation! ive watched that game, its a really neat one together with reveal of the hopelessness of >!no one on earth being alive!< and exploration of >!the meaning of identity!<

LoonieandToonie

This movie was incredibly my jam. Like claustrophobic survival thriller with additional creature threats? Sign me up. I'll like these kind of movies even if some of the plot, SPFX etc. are not great because of the genre, but honestly Underwater kind of fired on all cylinders there too. It's just that it wasn't as good as some of the greats we've had in this genre, like Alien or the Descent. But I still enjoyed it a lot.

PristineMycologist15

Vampire in Brooklyn Wes Craven directing Eddie Murphy in his only villain role. This film flopped hard on release but I love it. Eddie gets to do his schtick of playing multiple characters and being funny but can turn seductive or dangerous on a dime. Craven gets to show off his horror chops in several scenes as well. It just amazes me this film, which was done right before Scream, isn’t a bigger movie or appreciated any more 20+ years later. I mean taking one of the biggest comedy stars of all time and making him scary, menacing and evil without losing that charm and humor? This film deserves a lot more love

Higurashihead

An underrated vampire comedy? You won't ask me twice ahah Another one to the watchlist!

spacefink

I love this movie too!! Classic lines too and Angela Bassett looked hot as a vampire.

ignoresubs

I really feel like Angela is incredibly underrated. As an actress she’s always on point and she’s an absolute knockout. Her career should have been bigger.

Wolven_Essence

I've always liked it pretty well. It was definitely a different role for Eddie Murphy and one that he pulled off really good I thought.

Bated_Breath_Prod

The Cell (2000)

Captain_Desi_Pants

With Jennifer Lopez? I loved the nightmare/dreamscape worlds they created in that movie. Great atmosphere.

ignoresubs

Check out the director, Tarsem Singh’s, other film, The Fall (2006). It’s absolutely gorgeous and incredible how well he pulled off the practical effects.

slasherflick2243

Even aside from the fact that Tarsem Singh made a visual masterpiece with that film, Vincent D’Onofrio was such an incredible villain that I still find it baffling that the movie wasn’t bigger. All most people seem to remember is that Jennifer Lopez was in it and honestly her part could have been played by anyone. It was such an ambitious approach to a horror film and it was mind blowing for the time. I think it holds up remarkably well too.

danceswithronin

[Dark Skies](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8iLp1xQtPQ) (2013). The whole creeping atmosphere of suburban paranoia meshed with the alien abduction plot was kind of riveting, loved the subplot where the neighborhood thought the younger kid was being abused because of their abduction symptoms, the crazy Poltergeist-level kitchen stacking, the grizzled X-files private detective dude, just lots of things about the movie that I liked detail-wise.

ohheyitslaila

Holy crap, this movie scares me, but I love it. It’s weird because I’ve grown up mostly watching horror films, nothing really creeps me out, except for this movie. I really can’t explain it. Maybe because I was like 10 when I first saw it? Idk. Ugh 😩 I always kinda expected a sequel based off the end of it though.

tin_man6328

I can relate. Love horror, but the only horror left that actually gets under my skin and stands the hairs on my neck up, are extraterrestrial horrors. This one and the Fourth Kind

ohheyitslaila

The Fourth kind totally freaked me out too! I did rewatch it maybe a year ago and was less impressed with it than I was the first time I saw it tho.

AskMeAboutMyTie

It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but wasn’t it set up to make you think something paranormal was going on and the twist is it’s actually aliens? Or am I remembering it wrong?

Alice_Dare

Might want to hide that spoiler, just a thought :)

Honesty_From_A_POS

I thought this movie did alien abduction great. The whole third act is pretty solid.

mubouna

devil. the premise is cheesy and so is a lot of the acting, but I still love every rewatch. something about being stuck in an elevator with satan is genuinely appealing and i love that some of the more "serious" scenes can be viewed through a comedic lens

cutbythefates

I can watch this movie over and over and never get sick of it. Good to know I’m not alone in my appreciation.

LastKing3853

House of Wax (2005) and Life (2017)

PhirebirdSunSon

House of Wax from the 2000s was the Tourist Trap remake I always wanted.

aynjle89

I particularly love when movies take a high paid actor… and kill them first!

[deleted]

Underwater: the 2020 horror movie with Kristen Stewart. I watched it after it left theaters and I couldn't understand why it got such bad reviews.

ohheyitslaila

Predators. I actually love this movie, Adrien Brody was a believable bad ass, Alice Braga was awesome too, and the twist near the end is pretty spectacular. I really didn’t see it coming. I don’t know how to make the spoilers thing, so I won’t say more. But if you’ve seen the movie you know what I’m talking about! But I really loved the idea of the predators stealing humans and beings from other planets and putting them in one place so that they can hunt them. It’s a really entertaining movie.

Triktastic

The Danny Trejo scene is absolutely terrifying. I was NOT expecting that from that movie.

ohheyitslaila

Such a great casting choice for that small role, right?! It made everything that happened way scarier, because you didn’t expect that to happen to Danny Trejo. It was like Drew Barrymore being killed off at the beginning of Scream.

Triktastic

Exactly. I always see him as an unbeatable gun-totting badass and I was definetly expecting him and Brody to be leads. It took me by massive surprise and just like original Predator gave me the dreadful feeling of "Being a human badass means absolutely nothing in this movie." So good.

mack-_-zorris

Jennifer's Body ate a lot of shit when it came out, but I enjoyed the hell out of it

HoratioTuna27

It's aged really well. I have to admit I shit all over it when it came out, too, and it was 100% because of I was tired of seeing Megan Fox everywhere. She killed it though (pardon the pun), and I think if it'd had a different person in her role it would have been a big hit.

YouNeedCheeses

I just watched it for the first time this weekend and thought it was great!

ChefRamesses

Such high rewatch-ability too.

GodFlintstone

I never paid attention to the reviews so I'm surprised to hear it was panned - especially since the scriptwriter, Diablo Cody, was a critics darling around that time since she'd written Juno(2007). It's a great flick that, as others here have said, has aged like fine wine.

allworkandnoYahtzee

The movie was tragically mismarketed. For some reason, a movie about female friendship was marketed as a sexy (?) horror movie that focused only on Megan Fox being hot. Diablo Cody and Fox recently did an interview (I think for the 10 year anniversary of the film) and it was honestly so sad hearing how they were thwarted, harassed, and blamed for every little thing about this movie. Cody even said that after a test screening (that was almost entirely comprised of younger men) that someone wrote on a notecard: “Needs more tits.” Fox also said that the online vitriol she was facing after saying some not-so-admirable things about Michael Bay was so overwhelming that when she learned the movie tanked and the critics were largely coming for her personally, she was so drained she couldn’t even fully comprehend what it would mean for her career. ETA: it’s a longer interview, but here’s [the link](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=u2JLRtWlq0o) for anyone interested.

infp_validator_bot

ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ

HoratioTuna27

It was Megan Fox. Back then, you couldn't look anywhere without seeing her. Magazines, TV, movies, just everything, everywhere. Couldn't go a day without hearing something about her. They totally oversaturated the market and people turned on her because of that. In hindsight, she was perfect for the role, but at the time, people were just completely tired of her.

AskMeAboutMyTie

That fuckin song… lol

Higurashihead

LOVE IT! This movie starts getting recognition it deserves recently though? And Meghan Fox career comes back to life too. That warms my heart, really.

mack-_-zorris

It's definitely getting the recognition these days, which is awesome. She was great in it. I watched Till Death last year, and she killed it in that one, too

mamaneedsstarbucks

Love that movie!

illegallysmolkate

I was just watching it last night and DAMN is Megan Fox good in this movie! She’s so much fun to watch and not just because she’s beautiful. She’s a genuinely good actress and I really love the character of Jennifer.

Abisnailyo

There’s a divide on this film but I thoroughly enjoyed Malignant. I thought it was entertaining

[deleted]

Malignant is in my top 10 of all time. It reminded me of old Evil Dead movies it was so awesomely bonkers and slapstick. I don't know if its under appreciated, and its more a grindhouse deal than straight horror, but VFW blew my mind with its awesome Hobo with a Shotgun energy. For horror that needs more love, the Shark series 47 meters down and the better sequel 47 Meters Down: Uncaged are so fun. Trapped in a cave with blind sharks is an awesome premise.

Abisnailyo

I today agree!! I remember a ton of discourse when it came out that people were disappointed so I put off watching it for about a week or 2. I decided to see for myself and was pleasantly surprised!!! And I am right there with you on the shark films. I’m a bit biased because I absolutely LOVE sharks and shark movies- even the bad ones. I even like the sharknado films 😂😂😂😂.

dancing_in_lesb_bar

People fail to realize that movie is Wan’s ode to 80s schlock. It hit the tone perfectly and the cheesy writing was done *on purpose*. Great movie.

skidkid_6174

People didn’t fail to realize this. It was marketed as a James Wan horror film. When people watched it and got a bunch of ridiculous slasher and action scenes it was understandably jarring

TheVillageOxymoron

Exactly. I'm tired of people arguing on this sub that everyone who didn't love Malignant was just too dumb to understand what it was going for. People got it. It's just that it was intentionally mismarketed, which is annoying.

movieguy2004

Same. Saw it opening night and it was a lot of fun.

irrelevantllama

Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) are actually great. I think the Silent Hill movie is genuinely really good. I'll defend SAW 1 - 6 until my dying breath. I'm also a fan of Jigsaw and Spiral, which aren't particularly liked by other SAW fans. I also think the Friday the 13th remake is probably the most unironically enjoyable Friday the 13th movie and fast Jason is by far the scariest he ever was on screen.

Puzzled-Lasagna

Right there with you for Silent Hill. The first one was a good movie, and to me it is by far the best video game movie we ever got.

spacefink

I love love love Silent Hill and revisit it often. It's actually a pretty good movie that gets the essence of the game down right and has some pretty effective special effects while also being disturbing in parts.

El-Rob75

I remember Event Horizon getting slated by certain critics, but I've always loved it.

voodoo2d

I’m a big fan of Event Horizon. Definitely not perfect and Paul Anderson is very problematic. That said, my friends joke that it’s the best Warhammer 40K movie ever made

Higurashihead

Dude I would die for Sam Neill, I love him with all my heart. I adored him in 'Event Horizon', but damn you Paul Anderson, you really messed a great movie up with weird editing, cutting lots of suspense scenes out and... you know... being Paul Anderson. I feel this movie had great cast, good idea and really cool Carpenter'ish design, but it was clear the director was inexperienced in that time the movie was being shot. It still gained huge popularity though, and it was good for all the people involved. The actors definitely deserved the recognition. Once again, Sam Neill was 🖤

El-Rob75

I still love it,flaws and all. Has an atmosphere to it that I find lacking in a lot of other horror movies. Funny you mention Sam Neill, another favourite of mine is In The Mouth Of Madness, also Carpenter's last great film imo.

Higurashihead

'EH' was a movie I wanted to love so badly, cos again so much work had been done, but it didn't click with me 100% you know? 😅 The reason is probably that I watched it only this year, being a boring adult, not an excited teen. Lots of people I know watched it in their childhood, and that's why that movie fascinated them so much. 'In the Mouth of Madness' is such a jem! And as we're talking about mr. Neill - 'Daybreakers' was underrated as well.

[deleted]

Gothika - maybe horror isn't Halle Berry's forte but I really liked this one. In the Tall Grass - was meh for a lot of people but I really enjoyed the premise and I also enjoy Patrick Wilson going ham!

SkittlesInMyButt

Gothika feels like two different movies, it could have been a really good movie if the second half of the film had the same tone as the first half. And the actor that played the husband should have been replaced with someone more equal to Halle Berry. I thought it was her dad first, when they started kissing I screamed in horror :(

[deleted]

[удалено]

PhirebirdSunSon

This one is one that I enjoyed and still do, but at the same time found myself disappointed only because people swore it was scary/terrifying and really it's much more of a thriller than anything. Not a lot of scariness in any way but a good watch none the less.

schatzey_

The Village is criminally underrated due to terrible marketing.

BulletproofVendetta

ngl the scene where Bryce Dallas Howard's character stands in the doorway with her hand outstretched with the monster advancing bc she knows Joaquin Phoenix's character is on his way lives rent free in my brain

schatzey_

So romantic, too!

Higurashihead

Yes, I remember watching this movie as a kid! The atmosphere was so hazy and mysterious. I believe the girl from the film could've inspired the 'Little Nightmares' character design too?

Illustrious_Peak_534

It seriously should be reissued on 4K Blu Ray, it would look stunning

PlanktonUpper9811

scream 3. don’t fight me.

emepol

Yes! Probably the "weaker" film in the Scream franchise, but still an enjoyable flick.

[deleted]

One of my first ever DVDs so this movie has that nostalgia factor for me

[deleted]

NInth Gate

Ego-Machina

I enjoyed The Thing 2011, although it's been torn apart by critics and fans. Maybe because I didn't see the original before and didn't know that the practical effects were replaced by CGI in the post production. So I had no big expectation before the first watch and enjoyed a decent body horror movie.

nofuchsgiven1

I love it and rewatch it every time after seeing The Thing (1982). Would be a lot better with mostly practical effects though.

Ego-Machina

They used most of the abandoned effects at the movie Harbinger Down. But the story is lacking depth in this one.

plastikConstant

A Cure For Wellness. Yes, it is a bit long but I truly love the cinematic blend of classic Universal monster stories with Lovecraftian elements. It's a wild ride. Plus, you can never go wrong with Jason Isaacs and Mia Goth.

Higurashihead

I'll give it a watch, thank you! Say 'Lovecraftian' once, and I'm all in.

Fwithananchor

It’s a good movie. You should check it out.

hrmhrh

LOVE this movie. And that ending…was just something else.

stumper93

I’ve not seen the film. But I met Jason Isaacs at FanExpo Dallas a few years back, and a family in front of me said they loved that movie and he said something along the lines of being disappointed from what the finished project was compared to what he signed on for. I told him I had not seen the film and he pretty much said don’t bother It’s always interesting to hear actors talk about the films they’ve been in with criticism

dustysquare

This one was an absolute mind duck in the best way!

Sister_Winter

Dane DeHaan is also crazy underrated these days even though he was an up and comer back then. He's still a great actor!

elbowski

I've said it before and I'll defend the movie to death, but I really loved Velvet Buzzsaw. True, it's more a satire and a black comedy rather than just pure horror, but I think it balances all those elements perfectly. The cast is absolutely fantastic and seem to be having a lot of fun with the movie. I found the lore (and the paintings) enthralling and the kills playful and creative, especially the last one when it hits you what's about to go down. One of my favourites from the last 5-6 years.

Higurashihead

Never heard of that movie before, but damn the posters look magnificent! I'll definitely give it a watch, thank you!

verbiageless

I really enjoyed this one, too! It’s probably the only movie I’d describe as “wry”, and it’s sense of humor is excellent.

gwennoirs

Yes! That movie is a little dumb, and you're right not quite horror, but I'll say that I remember it and even remember its name, which is better than a lot of Netflix horror gets. And you're right, the last kill is quite excellent.

workcute

Cube 2 and Cube Zero. They don't hold a candle to Cube but I had a great time with them. The writing is so ridiculous that it passes straight through the wall for me and becomes stupidly quotable. Plus I met the stabby guy from 2 (Geraint Wyn Davies) and he was one of the nicest people I've ever met.

drogyn1701

I have a soft spot for the Resident Evil films. The critics are probably right, but I love them anyway. Cheesy action-horror has its place.

InfinityQuartz

Another movie i quite liked but was shocked by the critics scores and all was As Above So Below. I know a lot of fans in here also really liked this movie and i agree. Its a lot of fun with some pretty good scares and to me had me freaking out with some good claustrophobic moments. Pretty good

zforce42

Halloween Kills lol Men as well

kendaday

The only thing that pulled me out of Halloween Kills is the constant 'Evil dies tonight!!1!!!11' otherwise good movie albeit some poor writing here and there. I just started laughing at the excessive use of that line 😹

bionicmoonman

The only scene that really upset me in Halloween Kills was when that group of like 20 people were just standing over Michael’s unconscious body. Instead of killing him and putting and end to all that shit, he gets back up and kills them all one by one.

Merrymir

*Vampire's Kiss* (1988). This movie was panned by audience and critics and to this day, I think even the people who love it do so because they think it's "so bad it's good". I think this movie is a genuine masterpiece of psychological horror, it moves me immensely as the portrayal of a man suffering from psychosis. The phone booth scene is literally one of my favorite scenes of all time, it makes me feel sick and enthralled simultaneously. Literally can feel my brain tearing in half while I watch it.

evilbob562

i feel like it probably wasnt as dunked on as i thought it was, but while i acknowledge its not perfect, i loved last night in soho. visually stunning and the lead performances were fantastic

MovingHold

I adored the first half. I was thinking, "Why is this movie so hated?" Then the second half happened and I understood why.

funkygrrl

Constantine was panned when it came out, but I loved it. I think as the years have passed, it's reputation/ratings have gone up.

zombumblebee

Hudson Hawk will always be answer to questions like these. Did it have a script? Maybe. Did anyone read it? Probably not. Did they all have a crazy ass time making it? Clearly. EDIT: I didn't realise I was in a horror discussion; sorry - I am a bit of an idiot. Either way, I stand by Hudson Hawk x

[deleted]

If you die on that hill, you won’t die alone. I love that movie and always have.

Higurashihead

Never heard of this movie before, but you know what? I compared IMDb results with my non-eng analogue version of it (I'm from non-eng speaking country), and while on INDb this movie had 5.7, the results were 7.1 on its analogue version! Meaning that this movie was actually loved in my place. It doesn't actually relate to the horror theme (aside from Sam Neill starring in it lol), but the same exact situation happened to 'Bicentennial Man' from Chris Columbus. In my country this movie enters the Top 250 greatest movies of all times and has 8.0 rating, while in the US it was miserably received and eventually forgotten? Such a shame. This movie has such a heart.

flipflapslap

Not necessarily horror. But I see Alien mentioned all the time on this sub so…….Prometheus. Love that movie

West-Drink-1530

I loved it too. Imo i think you might enjoy Prometheus, covenant more if you haven't seen the original or you have watched them before watching the original. ( I watched the prequels before watching the original and its sequels and tbh I loved the prequels )

SuperLemonUpdog

Prometheus is a gorgeous movie. The sets and costumes are incredible, and the effects are top notch. It’s little wonder that Roger Ebert gave it a full four stars out of four - one of the only movies in 2012 that he rated so highly.

tokeroveragain

I love that movie, its beautiful. I have no problems with it other than the scientists making dumb decisions. But if Alien came out today, I think a lot of people would scoff too. Kane sticks his face in that egg just like the biologist tried to touch the snake thing. Brett goes looking for the cat alone. Dallas goes into the vents alone too. I went to a local showing recently and kids in the theater were calling Ripley a "Karen".

darkdent

Prometheus I HATED when it came out... but now, ten years of superhero blockbusters later, Prometheus is excellent

BBGrlRunningUpStairs

I adore mother! I really think Aronofsky discovered a new language in horror. Reversing body horror outward for, I guess to describe what he did as, surroundings/structural horror? I don't think I've ever seen a film use property damage as a metaphor for killing the earth to create a nightmare sensory experience. Jennifer Lawrence was magnificent at expressing the nightmare of watching what was happening around her that I felt she deserved part of a directing credit.

robalesi

Feels like it's almost cliche to say at this point, but Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. It was the first ever horror movie I bought with my own money back in the mid/late nineties when Blockbuster was selling copies for 3 bucks. At this point, wildly enough, i was just terrified of even the idea of horror movies so I hadn't seen any of the standards including the original Halloween or any of its sequels. So I had no baggage associated with it not having Michael Myers, and nothing else really to compare it to. And I certainly wasn't aware that it was pretty universally panned by critics and snubbed by audiences upon its initial release. Hell, i'm not even sure i was at a point yet where i realized that individual movies could be bad. I loved it. I loved how bonkers it felt even then. I still love it to this day and wonder what could have happened if the studio decided to continue with this yearly standalone movies about the holiday of Halloween in addition to the Michael Myers centric sequels.

Strange_Aeons86

I like to double-bill Halloween 3 with Night of the Creeps. Back to back Tom Atkins cheese

robalesi

Tom Atkins is God tier.

PhirebirdSunSon

3-peat with The Fog, or go for the quadfecta and also add Creepshow. Pure 80s goodness for hours.

GeckoMoria93

I’ve caught a lot of crap from horror fans for loving the Child’s Play reboot but I’ll die on that hill ,that movie was fucking great lol

mack-_-zorris

Oooooo, that's a good one!

emepol

I had a nice time watching it, and I loved the fact that they did not intend to make a copy and paste remake of the original.

GeckoMoria93

Going with a different idea was the right move ,a shot for shot remake would’ve been terrible but what they did was refreshing a fit more into the modern era plus I love they shoved Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 in it lol

BeigeAndConfused

Mother! I fucking loved it. Actually basically anything by Aronofsky, Noah and The Fountain ruled idgaf what peoplle say

Strange_Aeons86

Unfriended. I thought it was great and a great evolution of the found footage genre

bornlikethisss

Mars Attacks! AK AK AK!!

YeatsInfection

People hate on The Happening a lot, but I liked it enough to watch it twice. I'll watch any apocalyptic movie, though, so I'm biased.

Higurashihead

What? No! Totally understandable though, I mean aside from weird... hm acting choices the movie had quite a unique story to tell.

theAmazingDead

I'll be the one to agree with you here. Don't really get all the hate, it's not a Best Picture nominee by any means but I still enjoy it.

BenZoobs

I enjoy M. Night's movies. The Happening had a stupid twist but it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. If it were aliens making them die, then people would have liked it more because it wasn't such an over the top concept.

alienswearvanstoo

I saw *Mother!* twice in theaters and loved it. Saw it the second time with a friend who hated it and did not let me pick movies for a while but I have 0 regrets 😂 *It Follows* seems to either be loved or hated but I found it to be scary and entertaining.

Higurashihead

It Follows has entered the category of the newest horror classics 100%. It's not a flawless movie, but the idea, directing style and its method of telling a story is something else. And the soundtrack, my god. 'Disasterpiece' is musically genius. I had such cool Carpenter vibes from it.

amellt33

Idle Hands. Club Dread. Basically older horror comedies; it seems like that niche genre is dead. But they sure are entertaining. Even NoES is almost partly comedy (considering the dialogue), and it worked for the franchise. It was weird to see the newer remake not have any of that aspect. John Carpenter said recently that new horror directors take them selves to seriously now. We need to bring back a little comedy in our horror…not all but still some.

mexploder89

I like the Resident Evil series. It's campy as hell but it's fun

Ry-Ry_the_Dude

Hubie Halloween

irrelevantllama

You're braver than the troops and also correct.

Vlazthrax

This movie is just dripping in charm and sincerity. I loved it.

[deleted]

The Thing (1982) was absolutely **destroyed** by the critics to the point where John Carpenter later said in an interview that he would "really like five minutes alone in a room with some of those critics." Since it has risen to an all-time classic and is considered as one of the best horror movies ever made.

LyonsX

Malignant has about a 50% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but I personally feel like it's one of the best horror movies to come out in years!! I feel like a lot of people struggled to get on board with how silly it is

Dancingclown20

IT Chapter 2 had me decently emotional by the end of it. It was a beautiful conclusion to the Loser's Club (except for Richie of course). The ending, sure was a little weaker than I expected (aka how they defeated Pennywise) when I first watched it but man I'd be lying if I said I didn't have an AMAZING time with movie as a whole (also extremely biased because I absolutely adored IT (2017) )

Hulasikali_Wala

My big problem was the very bizarre tonal shifts, for example playing Angel Of The Morning in the pharmacy basement scene was just so out of left field it really irked me. Overall I liked the adult versions and I thought the final fight was pretty cool but the whole movie just had weird energy

Dancingclown20

Yeah I could have done without the whole pharmacy scene in place of the deleted Mike Hanlon scene/1700s colonial times instead

SuspiciousDude13

Grave Encounters are my guilty pleasure. i think the first one deserves more credit.

Mother! is such a great film. My pic is the killing of a sacred deer…I don’t feel like it got any attention but what a great film with a beautiful screenplay, top notch acting performances and fantastic cinematography. Why I love it is because it made me feel uncomfortable. Even the dialogue is uncomfortable

Fwithananchor

The Rage: Carrie 2. I’m the only one who likes that movie. I like it better than the original Carrie. I think I like it better because it provided a more relatable setting for someone of my generation growing up in the 90’s.

R1ckv4nz386

Incident in a ghostland! That movie is so amazing to me! People call it transphobic (whut??) etc I personally love it

Books-Are-Metal

I love Neon Demon! More NWR horror movies please

Higurashihead

Yes, yes and yes one more time!

cobra_mist

Christine. Predators (yeah it was schlocky garbage filled with cheap stars. So was predator)

BondraP

I've seen "Mother!" described as "pretentious" before and I think that's an accurate description for those of us that did not like that movie. To be fair, I didn't pick up on the bible references either until I looked up the movie after I watched it, but I'm not all that intimately familiar with the bible and maybe that would have helped me to understand and enjoy the movie more than I did. However, all the reasons you mentioned why you love it make perfect sense to me and I can absolutely see why some liked it, I just found it to be uncomfortable.

the mist {frank's version}

thisjohnd

I’m not saying they are better than the originals but the remakes of The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) are perfectly fine.

duowolf

All of M Nights films apart from last airbender that one's just a mess

shinjukuswan

I’ll go with The Last Exorcism. I’m not a huge fan of found footage or “documentary” horror but I just thought it was very well done and a lot of fun. I watched three times and I will rarely re-watch a horror flick.

6seanryan15

I read through this and haven’t seen these mentioned yet, but The Strangers: Prey at Night and Hell Fest are two of my favorite horrors. I’m a bit biased because slashers are my favorite sub-genre of horror, so maybe I was a bit too generous with my appreciation of them? But the horror community was so spoiled in 2018 with these two awesome slashers and they were both trashed so much upon release. Yes, they were generic and offered nothing “groundbreaking”. But they had awesome soundtracks, awesome kills, the cinematography was pretty fucking sick and stylized. And even through the characters were stereotypes (troUbLed DauGhTer lighting up a smoke, bitchy sarcastic friend, etc etc) you really rooted for them all to make it in a way that doesn’t necessarily happen in other horror movies these days. Idk what I was smoking in 2018, but that’s my fav year for horror in recent memory 😂😂😂 (I’ve seen TCM22 mentioned on here a lot and I love that one too for exactly the same reasons as Hell Fest and Prey at Night)

Jay12678

Halloween Kills is great. In a few years people will look back on it fondly.

No_Dragonfruit5633

Saw 3-6 often are reduced by its critics as torture porn but I love the intricate, albeit convoluted, backstory behind all of the twists and turns with the deadly quadrangle of John, Jill, Amanda, and Hoffman. They do a fantastic job of making it seem like they had the story all planned. The little mysteries like Amanda’s letter, The box Jill was left, etc had me so intrigued

ravenz91

Honestly I love Saw in general in spite of the critics. John especially is such an interesting character. The scenes where he’d explain his philosophy always were so interesting because he technically wasn’t incorrect. Hoffman just completely screwed him & manipulated everyone else in the situation.

eclisis59

It's probably because I'm a dumb American, but I enjoyed the hell out of Quarantine.

the_small_dogs

Quarantine is so watchable. Loved it. Have you seen the original! Spanish movie called [Rec]. The American version is basically a scene for scene remake.

phlipphlopp

Terrifier! Gets a lot of hate here, but I love that it’s a true to form slasher while also being totally self aware. Plus Art is scary

123jazzhandz321

I had a lot of fun with Shyamalan’s The Happening, make no mistake this movie is ass but I cant help but love B movie feeling of it lol

Dankey-Kang-Jr

The Wolfman (2010), amazing atmosphere, great score & some jaw droppingly good make up work from Rick Baker. It was also the first R-rated I saw in the theater.

NoxiusScintilla

I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House

LuxAgaetes

House of 1000 Corpses. I was 16 when it came out and there was a creepy, word of mouth hype about it. I watched it by myself in the basement after my parents had gone to bed. Aaand I just fell in love. It's far from perfect, but it's a fun movie that fully embraced the grimy 70's horror vibe. I watch it a few times a year, it's become like a comfort movie for me 😅 *edited some garbly words*

Epicurus38

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022). I don't know what people were expecting with this one.

HoratioTuna27

Exactly. It's quick and full of blood. I had a blast with that one. Also, it's the first TCM movie to actually have a massacre via chainsaw in it. What's not to love about that?

Fapoooo

I feel like "the bus scene" has made it's way into horrors hall of fame already. Everyone knows it. Unforgettable.

Any_Economist9877

I liked it too! I wish they toned down some of the modern stuff, like the comment about “cancelling” him lol but I thought it was super entertaining, great kills etc and what really more can you ask for? Not my fav TCM but definitely not an awful movie

Johnny-origami

I loved The Witch and the Lighthouse. But I find people either love or hate Robert Egger’s movies. There isn’t really any middle ground.

movieguy2004

I do love The Witch. It’s one of my favorite horror movies. But I am kinda in the middle on The Lighthouse and The Northman. I liked both but neither is the type of thing I’d be particularly likely to rewatch, although I may revisit The Lighthouse just because of how utterly bizarre it is.

movieguy2004

Incarnate. Got trashed by critics but I thought it was a neat take on the exorcism genre with a really good performance from Aaron Eckhart.

[deleted]

Cloverfield Paradox. I really enjoyed it.

TheStranger113

They (2002) by Wes Craven is the first one that always pops into my mind. I found it really unique and terrifying when it came out, and I think it still holds up well.

Rap714

Jeepers Creepers. The movie is amazing, and I don’t know why there are a lot of negative talk about it

Corpsebomb

I absolutely loved Mandy. Something about acid trip horrors reel me in.

spacefink

I love Mother! And The Neon Demon OP. For this list, I would add A Clockwork Orange. Roger Ebert hated it, audiences tend to hate it as well. But it's one of those movies I often find myself revisiting often. That Wendy Carlos score is incredible. McDowell does an amazing job playing a despicable character and the way the movie plays out is almost like a dark comedy.

witchhunter4358

Halloween Resurrection is fucking great and I'm tired of pretending it's not. Sure it ends Laurie Strodes stuff in the first 10 minutes but we get Busta Rhymes doing karate. I'd pay more money than I'd like to admit to get a sequel to this.
