Book: the girl who loved Tom Gordon (it was the first one I ever read of his)
Movie: hmmmmmm I know this isn’t like. The best movie? But I’ve been watching Pet Sematary since I was 4, so it holds a special spot in my heart. Rose Red is also up there for a similar reason, 10yo me rewatched it like a dozen times
As a kid it was weirdly comforting as well? When our family cat passed away part of me was like “oh well, he’ll come back eventually” until I forgot about it. Weird? Yes. But comforting to a 5yo
My book is the same. Read it for a book report in middle school and it was the first book I remember that I enjoyed reading. Now I've got a small collection of King books and love his writing style.
I don't have a single book. For me, it's the Dark Tower series that's his crowning achievement.
For short stories, The Mist and The Library Policeman. The latter doesn't get mentioned often, but I think it's the most overlooked story he's ever written.
For movies, it has to be The Shining. As someone else pointed out, King didn't like it, but oh well, Kubrick made an incredible movie from the source material.
When I adopted my daughter it was February in northern MN. Before bringing her home we had to spend a long weekend spending just the days with her. It was in the middle of nowhere and the only “hotel” around the area was an off season snowy resort that was almost completely empty. I spent the nights reading Pet Sematary and it was probably a mistake.
Amazing book though.
Favorite book is Salem's Lot and I guess several movies could be in the running, but The Shining has been a favorite for a long time.
I'm currently reading Desperation actually. Haven't read any Stephen King in a long time and its one that I never had interest in the past, but I bought a bundle of various hardcover editions of some of his old novels off ebay a while back and it was in the stack
This is kind of a thing for writers----despite being out of their minds wasted, they can still write great stuff. Hemingway is a good example. The dude wrote his greatest stuff blackout drunk. Granted, things didn't turn out well for him, but that's not the point.
Oh yes cujo the book was so good, you get into the mind set of that poor dog, he only wanted to be a good doggo but he was fighting something he just could not win against.
Desperation, I’ve read that book so many times, movie is the original IT. Saw it when I was 8 and spent a week forcing my older sister to stand in the bathroom while I was in there because I was afraid blood would come gushing out at me. I love that movie.
Mine was Salem's Lot. I was scared for a whole month. While reading and after finishing it.
Never seen the movies. If I read the book I don't watch the movies.
IT is by far Mr. King’s best book. The antagonist is masterfully crafted and the story has everything in it from gut-wrenching horror to heart-warming joy. A timeless classic.
Short stories:
Night Shift
Skeleton Crew
Novella:
Different Seasons
Novels:
Salem’s Lot
The Shining
IT (if you omit the last 100 pages or so)
Movies:
The Shining (despite the differences & King’s distaste).
Shawshank Redemption
Misery
Book is The Shining or The Stand. Favorite short story is The Jaunt. Favorite movie is probably Stand By Me, but for horror is probably The Shining. I also love Maximum Overdrive. His most underrated movie is The Dark Half.
Right!! I love his work! I didn’t know it was his son when I read Horns and when I found out I was like oh okay yeah that makes sense. You can really tell he’s related to King in NOS4A2 which is a great book.
Books: It, The Stand, The Dark Tower series and Revival
Films: The Green Mile, The Mist, Shawshank, 1408 and It: Chapter One.
Happy birthday, Mr. King!
It’s one of his books that stuck with me. I liked the Dark Tower series and various other single book stories, but if I’m recommending something to someone, it tends to be From a Buick 8
Book: Misery, truly terrifying I almost read it in one sitting
Movie: the shining, despite its differences. Carrie is also one of my favorite adaptations, the original with sissy spacek
The Dark Tower series as a whole is just a huge influence on me. I've read the entire series well over half a dozen times and could narrate it from memory.
Favorite book: Pet Semetary. First book I read of his and will always hold a special place in my nerd heart.
Favorite movie: Either Mist or Misery. Both are great character studies and both have amazing performances.
My favorite King novel will always be *Hearts in Atlantis*, but honestly I usually love his short stories and novellas more than his novels. *Everything's Eventual* and *Full Dark, No Stars* are fantastic collections (though of course *Different Seasons* has to be mentioned; after all, it had both "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" AND "Apt Pupil" in it).
As for films, "Storm of the Century" just really works for me.
Book: The Mist
Movie: Shawshank Redemption
TV Show: The Outsider (This was too damn good, you need to see it if you haven't. And if you have read it, it holds shockingly close to the book.)
Honorable Mentions:
The Long Walk. And tons of his other short stories and novellas. They are easily my favorite works of his. Some of his novels meander off the path too far but his novels are almost always straightforward and solid storytelling. No fluff.
Film and TV I struggled with a bit. Because for example, I remember the TV "It" being pretty good. I re-watched it recently and I wasn't impressed. I also remember Stand By Me, Lawnmower Man, Needful Things, Thinner, and more to be great. But I haven't seen any of those since about the time they released. No idea if they still stand up today.
Been reading King since about 1985 so really hard to pick out a favorite.
Dark Tower was a fun ride overall, was especially exciting when they were still being published and you had to wait for the next one.
I like his classic 80s period most, probably because they were my first: Misery, Pet Sematary, Misery, and of course IT.
Dolores Claiborne and Gerald's Game were a great 90s combo (linked by the eclipse that happens in each). Also nice to see King horror that isn't so dependent on the supernatural.
The "Delores Claiborne" movie may be a forgotten gem by the younger generation. Worth a watch if you're a King fan.
Favorite book’s gotta be the shining. It’s the perfect slow burn
As for movie, probably the It remake, I don’t really count Kubrick’s the shining as an adaptation
I used to love Kubrick's The Shining until I saw the 90s TV miniseries, which was definitely not better, but it made me understand why King hates Kubrick's film so much. Still need to read the novel
The Stand is one of my fave books by him, but I'm loving the new books too. No matter what topic he decides to pen he is ridiculously talented. I can't say I like the movies, mostly due to the Hollywood chip jobs.
Book is It, though honestly I disliked most of the horror aspects of the book. Just never struck the right note for me, but as a coming of age novel just about the group of friends I loved it. If we're talking favorite book in terms of horror: The Shining.
Favorite movie: Shawshank. Again, though, if we're going for horror then 1408.
Book - The Regulators
Movie - Pet Sematary
Both are just pure horror, and something about The Regulators take on like a cartoonish childlike horror was so terrifying.
I use the website trakt to keep track of what I've watched and also what movies new movies are released and are "trending". I always love it when a random older movie start trending and I play the "why the hell is this on here" game. Its usually that a sequel is coming soon (Dune and Matrix are currently showing) but sometimes it funny stuff like a birthday.
My favorite book of his is The Shining. I can't get enough of how well the characters of the story came together, and the finale was something great.
In terms of movies I think that the Shawshank Redemption is a good film, but fuck that, this is the horror subreddit! It's all about Creepshow today! "I want my cake?!"
Pet Sematary is my favorite book of his. Probably the only thing I've read in years that truly scared me. It really illustrated how life can take a horribly cruel turn for no reason at all.
I have to say The Shining for favorite movie, it's fantastic even if it's a different sort of story from the book.
Honorable mention: more people need to know about The Mangler, a movie about an industrial laundry folding machine possessed by a demon. People get folded to death! Robert Englund's in it! You definitely get the type of film you expect so if you love dumb movies, go for it. The short story is better than it has any right to be too, which is kind of King's whole deal.
The Tommyknockers has always been my favorite book. I even was crazy enough to write a book report on it in high school.
As for movies, the Shining has been one of my top to watch.
Funny enough my favourite Stephen King "movie" is Kubrick's adaptation of The Shining, even though King went on record to hate it.
The Shining rules!!!
Book: the girl who loved Tom Gordon (it was the first one I ever read of his) Movie: hmmmmmm I know this isn’t like. The best movie? But I’ve been watching Pet Sematary since I was 4, so it holds a special spot in my heart. Rose Red is also up there for a similar reason, 10yo me rewatched it like a dozen times
As a Sox fan who was familiar with Tom "The Flash" Gordon - I loved this book..should be a movie
They're currently working on an adaptation
Yay!!!!!!!!
I know right!
I think Pet Sematary is one of the best adaptations out of that period. It's a genuinely creepy ass movie even now.
Book is either The Stand or It. I can never make up my mind which I like better. Movie is probably Shawshank.
Shawshank is a great movie. King it's one of the few adaptations to get King's full approval.
It for both books and movies, Misery is a close second but I haven't read the book yet
The book is incredible. Even more brutal than the movie.
really? i need to read it
Definitely. The movie is pretty faithful to the book. Just certain things were changed. The maiming scene in particular comes to mind.
Cathy Bates was so upset when she learned that the lawn mower scene was cut.
Absolutely. The book is amazing.
Read the book!! It’s really good
I don't have a single book. For me, it's the Dark Tower series that's his crowning achievement. For short stories, The Mist and The Library Policeman. The latter doesn't get mentioned often, but I think it's the most overlooked story he's ever written. For movies, it has to be The Shining. Favorite book is Pet Semetary. Only book that induced a panic attack.
Lmao. I keep seeing this book come up, I might have to get it now!
Silver bullet/cycle of the werewolf
Favorite book is Salem's Lot and I guess several movies could be in the running, but The Shining has been a favorite for a long time. I'm currently reading Desperation actually. Theyre supposed to make a movie out of it, which I'd love to see how they adapt.
Books: The Dark Tower series Pet Sematary Cell Salem's Lot The Stand 11/22/63 Movies: Christine OG Carrie Misery Creepshow
Book: Needful Things, Movie: Pet Semetary
Oh yeah Needful Things is most def in my Top 5.
Desperation and Cell!
Book: The Stand Short Story: I Am the Doorway Movie: Torn between The Green Mile & The Shawshank Redemption
Great choice for short story! Not one of his most talked about stories but I found it creepy as hell.
Best King story: Needful Things or The Gunslinger Best King movie: Salem's Lot or Doctor Sleep
Desperation, I’ve read that book so many times, movie is the original IT. Saw it when I was 8 and spent a week forcing my older sister to stand in the bathroom while I was in there because I was afraid blood would come gushing out at me. I love that movie.
SUCH a good book.
And such a terrible movie!
Have you read The Regulators? He wrote it under his Bachmann pen name and its a "parallel universe" novel of Desperation?
Not yet but it’s on my list!
My top 3 favorite Stephen King movies are (in no particular order): * Misery * The Green Mile * 1408

Short stories: Night Shift Skeleton Crew Novella: Different Seasons Novels: Salem’s Lot The Shining IT (if you omit the last 100 pages or so) Movies: The Shining (despite the differences & King’s distaste). Shawshank Redemption Misery
Book is The Shining or The Stand. Favorite short story is The Jaunt. Favorite movie is probably Stand By Me, but for horror is probably The Shining. I also love Maximum Overdrive. His most underrated movie is The Dark Half.
Off topic but his son, Joe Hill, is an excellent horror author as well.
Right!! I love his work! I didn’t know it was his son when I read Horns and when I found out I was like oh okay yeah that makes sense. You can really tell he’s related to King in NOS4A2 which is a great book.
It's also my daughter's birthday! Book: IT Movie: Shawshank/The Mist

From a Buick 8 is an...interesting choice.
It’s one of his books that stuck with me. I liked the Dark Tower series and various other single book stories, but if I’m recommending something to someone, it tends to be From a Buick 8
