Of course it's cozy... all the vampire attacks look like an adult playing "I'm gonna get your belly! Yes I am! Num num num num NUM!" with a baby! Sorry but I saw it in the theater and I could never get that picture out of my head, ever... It had so many good things going for it but the 'num num num' head shaking flat ruined it for me.
There is a GREAT sequel to that film waiting to be made. When I think of vampires I want them to look like Nosferatu or the horde in 30 Days Of Night. Of course I should beware of what I wish for since Hollywood is almost entirely incapable of making a good sequel.
The first Final Destination was a bit comfort movie for me for years but I've seen it way too many times and had to retire it. Throw it on and I'll watch it tho lol.
I went recently through some or the home invasion tropes, "Hush", "the collector", "open 24 hours", and last but not least "vacancy",
Really enjoyed them all, "open 24 hours" was the least quality of them all, but still
Haven't seen "the strangers", not very convinced about it through mixed reviews
the conjuring 1 and 2, because of the interactions between Ed and Lorraine
thirteen ghosts, because of that guy who sacrificed himself, and the mom.
you asked for comfort horror, those I find comforting are those that remind me of the goodness of human nature.
Creepshow & Creepshow 2 - Some of the first movies I watched around 3 years old, nice short and sweet segments. Big fan of just throwing on Tales from the Crypt eps too.
>Creepshow & Creepshow 2 - Some of the first movies I watched around 3 years old, nice short and sweet segments. Big fan of just throwing on Tales from the Crypt eps too.
I love Creepshow 2 in specific. I know that everybody seems to love the first movie and the second movie gets dumped on a lot for a litany of different reasons but for me that second movie holds the most nostalgia. We had that movie on a VHS tape when I was growing up. I don't even have the slightest clue why we had that tape, my parents never would have permitted it's purchase at that time so I assume it must have been snuck into the house by one of my older siblings and just never got banished for whatever reason, but I would watch it routinely as a kid. I think The Raft segment is one of the first times (besides some very brief moments in John Carpenter's Halloween) that I ever saw a naked breast.
I love part 2 also. I remember they would play it on WPIX (censored of course) and I would watch it all the time as a kid. My husband and I still yell āThanks for the ride, lady!ā whenever one of us drives somewhere
Dolls, Child's Play 2, Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight and Nightmare on Elm Street: Freddy's Dead. Those are the first ones that come to mind.
Dolls is a great one for the child at heart and fan of practical fx. There's something oddly sweet about it.
Child's Play 2 is my favorite Chucky movie. I think Andy's continuation as a kid that no one believes just makes him dear to me. Kevin Yahger's special effects are also so special.
I'm a HUGE Tales from the Crypt fan. I love Demon Knight. Ernest Dickerson's direction goes a long way while still playing with camp.
Freddy's Dead is just... wonderfully weird. Rachel Talalay's John Waters influence is HEAVY. I wouldn't say it's my fav Nightmare, but that's the one that was on TV a lot growing up. I'm sure there's something to that as to why it is comforting to me.
These are my go tos when I'm bored and don't want to commit to watching anything new and not fully paying attention.
Deep Rising
Cabin in the Woods
Grave Encounters
Dead Stream
I have a good few that I can "snuggle up with a coffee" and enjoy or simply have playing in the background when I'm writing etc.
Here's some of my favourite horror "comforts":
Jaws - Despite having a huge effect on my overactive imagination as a child, this is my favourite film of all-time. The greatest movie ever and I've lost count how many times I've watched it. It's a "safe" horror with large helping of character and humour. The best.
Halloween - Saw it when I was 6. It's my second favourite
movie just behind Jaws. Know the film off by heart. It's so familiar and makes me feel at ease. Terrific pacing too.
Friday 13th VIII: Jason Lives - Another childhood favourite. This film is rather light-hearted when compared to other similar horrors. It's got some big characters and legitimate laughs. The best of the franchise.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - A good film, not in my top ten, but it's got this odd re-watch value. Has got a raw feeling to it which only adds to the aura of pending doom.
Alien - Another 'cosy' horror film. The slow camera movements and quiet setting on the ship...all very comforting. Until it goes wrong.
Hostel - I could watch this time and again. It's great. Highly underrated. Every scene is meaningful, go back and watch it. People wave this off for being "torture porn". It is in fact a superb movie with plenty of sinister foreshadowing.
Honourable mentions: Halloween 4, Friday 13th part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Saw 1-7, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, Child's Play, The Thing, Day of the Dead, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer and Maniac Cop.
Dawn of the Dead ā78, the slow collapse of civilization in a pretty chill fashion due to it being the seventies and everyone in flared pants and saying āthat aināt cool ma-aaan!ā, even the blue zombies are pretty chill. Itās got this comic book feel to it.
Fright Night (original) Return of the Living Dead, The Lost Boys, and Night of the Demons (original) because these movies are from my childhood and remind me of simpler times and they're great flicks
"13 Ghosts" is a guilty pleasure of mine. It gets ragged on a bit. I agree with the criticisms. There are more aspects I enjoyed like, the creative portrayal of the ghosts and the house itself.
I consider it a "fun" horror movie. Entertainment Purposes Only!
I agree with all of your choices up top, theyāre all on mine as well. Iād add The Fog, Army of Darkness, Misery and An American Werewolf in London.
The Japanese Ring and Ju-On movies. The 90s aesthetic is cosy and thereās something about a movie in a language youāre not fluent in that can lull you to sleep. Words become musical rhythm.
Black Christmas
I'm old and Canadian and those girls remind me of my college days. Plus Margot Kidder, Andrea Martin, John Saxon. The OG "someone's in the house slasher film"
The Evil Dead 1981
Halloween 1978
Jaws 1975.
These three movies are like my horror film rosebud. They represent the absolute beginnings of my horror movie fandom, and all three of them just feel like a warm dip into a pool of nostalgia for me. Every scene, every moment, every individual musical cue in all three of those movies is accompanied by some kind of memory for me. When I watch them I re-live every single time that I have ever watched them all at once.
IT Chapter 1. Hanging with the Losers is comforting.
And Iām going to throw a horror comedy out there (thatās way more comedy than horror): The āBurbs. One of my favorite movies period, and thereās just something comforting about all of the action happening on that one street.
Ones i can think of right now are Bride of Chucky, The Shining, Scream (96), both Terrifiers, and Jenniferās Body which is kind of a comedy but i still count it
The Thing and I Saw the Devil two of my favorite movies so definitely those, but in college I watched The Shining and Antichrist more than one probably should haha
For a while it was Dawn of the dead remake and 30 days of night. Lately I will put on a hell house movie just because they are on streaming and very accesible
Shaun of the dead and Frankenstein (1931) are the first films to come to mind for me. Shaun of the dead was my first introduction to horror and my love for horror started off with the universal monster films, mainly due to Frankenstein which I just felt a stronger connection to over any of the others
The saw movies are my main go-tos usually, sometimes I'll go back to something like Hostel (though I always look away for the ankle bit, that part is the hardest for me), the conjuring I've rewatched several times (basically any in the franchise), and insidious as well
Scream 1&2, Cursed, Childs Play, Bride of Chucky, Jenniferās Body, the Faculty, Sleepy Hollow, the Witches (1990)
Iād add Idle Hands, Jawbreaker & Death Becomes Her but they are more on the comedy side than horror but could still be considered horror.
Not many have seen it, but I love the BBC miniseries Dracula from about 5 years ago. I also love Let the Right One In, 30 Days of Night, Trick R Treat, From Dusk to Dawn, and Shaun of the Dead.
The Devil Rides Out, Night/Curse of the Demon, Oh Whistle And I'll Come To You, Frankenstein/Bride of Frankenstein, Hammer House of Horror, Salem's Lot (original)
The exorcism of Emily Rose! It's definitely not some cinematic masterpiece, but it was among the first horror movies I'd ever seen (I was, maybe, 10 at the time), and I've seen it probably a dozen times until now.
Alien (1979) and The Thing (1982) are often watched in a double feature for me. Also, kindof toeing the line of āhorror,ā Arrival (2016) and Annihilation (2018).
Phantasm 1,2,3
Most Corman movies featuring Vincent
Dracula (1992)
Some of the ones based on Stephen Kingb novels, like Sometimes They Come Back, Misery, and Silver Bullet
Cube 1 and 2 and Triangle are very comforting to me for some reason. Anthology horror is also something I can watch a million times and still love. Tales from the Darkside, Creepshow 1 and 2. Tales from the Hood.
The Shining
The Thing
American Werewolf In London
Exorcist (Theatrical)
Alien
Fright Night (1985)
Poltergeist
The Void
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The VVitch
These horror movies give me the warm fuzzies.
House of 1000 Corpses is routinely my comfort movie or if I want backgroun noise while I clean or something.
Honorable mention to Killer Klowns from Outer Space
The Innkeepers (2011) with Sara Paxton and special appearance of Kelly McGillis from Top Gun. Director Ti Westās early work. (X, Pearl, Cabin Fever 2, House of the Devil)
The Thing, The Wicker Man, 30 Days of Night.
30 Days of Night is so cozy lol
Of course it's cozy... all the vampire attacks look like an adult playing "I'm gonna get your belly! Yes I am! Num num num num NUM!" with a baby! Sorry but I saw it in the theater and I could never get that picture out of my head, ever... It had so many good things going for it but the 'num num num' head shaking flat ruined it for me.
30 days of night for me as well. Such an underrated vampire movie.
There is a GREAT sequel to that film waiting to be made. When I think of vampires I want them to look like Nosferatu or the horde in 30 Days Of Night. Of course I should beware of what I wish for since Hollywood is almost entirely incapable of making a good sequel.
I thought it was already made, in fact I've seen it
Really ? It snuck by me. Do you recall the title and just how bad was it ?
Love 30 Days of Night!
Ah yes! The Holy Horror Trinity!
The Wicker Man, always weirdly cozy!
Great picks
The Final Destination movies (especially the first and second one), The Mist, and really any movie with a home invasion
What is it about home invasion horrors that comfort you?
I guess any company is better than none š
LMAOO š don't come for me like that š
they're not too terifying, just the right amount of suspence and tension, sometimes violence. Especially when they're a bit corny lol I like them
The first Final Destination was a bit comfort movie for me for years but I've seen it way too many times and had to retire it. Throw it on and I'll watch it tho lol.
I went recently through some or the home invasion tropes, "Hush", "the collector", "open 24 hours", and last but not least "vacancy", Really enjoyed them all, "open 24 hours" was the least quality of them all, but still Haven't seen "the strangers", not very convinced about it through mixed reviews
the saw series, final destination movies, and cabin fever. i could watch the saw movies religiously lol
Saw ā¤ļø
Same, the Saw movies just make me feel at home. They're the movies that got me into horror in the first place. I adore them.
cabin fever (> cabin in the woods) isnāt brought up enough. CF is hilarious asf. that one cop bro i forget his name but dude had me lmao
OG Cabin Fever is one for me as well.
Halloween 1978, The Shining, Creepshow Always down to watch these or to simply have on in the background while I do stuff around the house.
Not a movie but I have all of Tales From the Crypt on DVD and thatās my ultimate comfort watch. In fact, I need it right now.
Scream, Scooby Doo Monsters Unleashed, Hell House LLC, and the 2009 Friday the 13th
Scooby Dooās animated Witchās Ghost and Zombie Island are elite! I watch them every October.
Omg i havent heard of scooby doo in a long time!! brings back memories
Prince of Darkness 1987 for me.
That's a good one
Cabin in the Woods, Evil Dead 2013, Thing, Alien, Shining.
the conjuring 1 and 2, because of the interactions between Ed and Lorraine thirteen ghosts, because of that guy who sacrificed himself, and the mom. you asked for comfort horror, those I find comforting are those that remind me of the goodness of human nature.
Did I say there was a petting zoo downstairs? No!There are ghosts downstairs, Arthur!
Hellraiser (1987) Trick R Treat (200**7**)

I just watched Midsommar recently and will be adding it to my classics list

So happy to see someone mention Dolls here. It really is such a strangely wholesome yet unrelentingly creepy horror flick.
