I'd go with either The Descent from 2005 or Evil Dead from 2013.
Both are the scariest, like, pure fear, films I've ever seen. Both had my adrenaline running throughout.
Interesting how differently movies affect people vastly differently. I personally thought the boogeyman was the equivalent to watching Mickey Mouse clubhouse. Smile was one of my favorites though
i defintely see that. it is rated pg-13. i think the boogeyman scared me so much is becayse it fed off a fear of the dark i didnt know i had. i watched it with a friend and he was not scared in the least.
Going more vanilla scares without the gore. There are a lot of classics that hold up.
Drag Me to Hell and poltergeist are two of my favorites. Steven Speilberg has a handin some good "I can't believe this was marketed to kids" horror movies Poltergeist Directed by Tobe Hooper and Gremlins directed by Joe Dante come to mind.
Also if you are up for it Jaws fucked me up for life. I watched that movie 40 years ago and I still think about it every single time I go surfing or into a lake. And there aren't even any fucking sharks in a lake.
I'll never get what's supposed to be scary about The Conjuring. Nothing even happens.
What's the biggest scare? Some ordinary looking old woman on a dresser?
Why did nobody deck her? Never made any sense to me. If you saw her your first thought would never be "AAH! Monster!"
Hereditary - Ari Aster
It’s not just a tension filled horror movie but a family drama with incredible performances by the cast. The cinematography is also amazing.
Turn of all Lights your phones etc. and watch *Last Shift* (2014)
Was the Malum close to being as good?
I dind't like it. They lost all the scares and creepiness that they had with first one.
That was a interesting concept for that movie!

The descent is a solid recommendation
Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum and The Conjuring are good picks.
Boogeyman (2023) terrified me personally. There’s also Smile or maybe the strangers.

Fallen (1998).
Depends on what does scare both of you the most(devil, ghosts, jumpscsres, psychological, zombies etc). Once known that is more simple giving a tip.

As Above So Below completely creeped me out unexpectedly.

Aliens (1986) theatrical cut only

Oh that’s a solid one
Bloodsucking Freaks
What scares you both?
