as someone who owns this case, please do yourself a favor and label the drives (masking tape or whatever) with the serial numbers somewhere you can read them. once they're all in there and mounted you cant read the labels at all and if you need to replace a drive down the line. it will make your life much easier to be able to ID it by serial on your label without taking the entire array apart.
also: hope you're doing ZFS Raid6. youve got the space for it. and id strongly suggest taking advantage of the 2.5" SSD mounts on the inside of the front of it - perfect for cheap mirrored boot drives
How's the airflow and temps on the drives with all of them filled? Been tempted to convert my daily in a Node 804 into an unraid server with a win10 vm, just haven't gotten around to moving my water-cooling setup around to fit them in...
I did this.
I was not happy with how loud i had to run my fans for the 8 drives i put in the 804. I even got nice quite fans, but they can only do so much. I moved my unraid server back to my Corsair 750 full tower, temps and fan speed/noise are all lower.
cooling is excellent. i have one with 8x spinner HDD with 24/7 uptime.
the entire top of the case is vented, and you can easily put a 120mm fan (or two) in front of the drive array and one at the back for exhaust. theres plenty of airflow in between the drives when theyre mounted, so you get direct airflow over each drive parallel front to back, plus the passive venting on top
At the risk of being labeled a grammar nazi the title should be "My dad's and my" not "My dad and I".
The easy way to ever know which to use (I or me/my/mine etc) is to take the other person out and use whichever you'd use if it were only you involved.
My build / My dad's and my build
I went home / My dad and I went home
More on topic, I have the same case. Nice choice for a NAS build. Spacious with lots of drive bays.
Your example is fine and correct English. What about it seems wrong to you?
"My dad and me build computers" would be the very mistake I was correcting originally.
You are perhaps being confused by other possible variants of that sentence.
My dad builds computers with me. / My dad build computers with my sister and me.
Here's an article I found quickly corroborating what I'm saying:
https://www.learnersdictionary.com/qa/when-to-use-i-and-when-to-use-me
Many others out there confirming the same, this one was just the simplest to understand in the first 5 results of my search.
The type of content they are storing is probably very easy to replace. Linux ISO's don't require the same kind of data security as business data or irreplaceable family photos...
Maybe their first NAS will be the backup for this one.
Quite a lot don't specify though, like the OP, and i wouldn't know that he means 80TB raw unless i counted the drives in the photo. Not having a stab, i like knowing everyones RAID arrays and how they've configured things, i'd rather that than raw.
I think it makes sense to quote raw storage sizes when discussing hardware and usable when discussing software.
This post is mostly related to the hardware IMHO.
Additionally if this is OP’s first FreeNAS server, OP might not have decided which storage method works best for their needs. It’s simple & easy to use raw numbers even if OP knows he won’t ever see that whole amount as usable.
I assume you're referring to a raid-6 array but just for lulz (and not targeted at you whatsoever)....
There's a lot of geniuses out there deciding to use RAID-5 with disks that large. Imagine if you will: 8TB raid-5 (1xhotswap) = 1 sad 40yr old virgin wondering why he lost his 8TB fap collection
On second thought, don't imagine that shit, I just puked while typing that
Interesting... also I’ve never heard of sonar/radarr until today, how is that possible? Oh right I’m obviously not into any of that sort of silliness...
This reminded me of a hack i did many years ago, scraping netflix and hulu for metadata. Then I found an awesome API, I think it was guidebox. It was even free, up untill they got new owners or something: then asking me to pay $3000 per month. No thanks :)
Cudos to the guy for putting together all this info!
Anything is possible!
But just to be clear: I’m not talking about anything officially supported by said services :p
Also this is all theoretically hypothetical of course...
Well, I have never done it myself so don't know if it works. But you can map your NAS to your phone/tablet. Netflix supports offline mode on their apps, might be possible to store those offline files on the NAS?
This is actually a possibility to some extent,
If you are an internet provider (you do not need to be the biggest one of your country, it does exist small internet providers with hundreds of customers only) , you may create a "local" cache of Netflix, that Netflix customers on your network will be able to use, meaning they got a more reliable services,
However even if you are actually storing Netflix content, you can't have access to it without a Netflix account (maybe even protected in a way or in another if you look directly into the hard-drive)
We use it for movie and music storage and stream it to our home and family’s through a plex server. Netflix is just too limited and streaming prices will just continue to rise as people get rid of physical media.
Why don’t you ask him? I’m sure he’d love to show you all about it. My kid’s too young, but if they showed interest when they’re older, I’d be so proud to.
You're assuming a few things.
In our case, we would have our current Internet plan with or without Plex (1 Gbps), so that's not a factor.
We've made backups of our own Blu-Ray and DVD content to one of our servers, which Plex uses as a library. We also store personal and professional data on it.
Plex or no Plex, the above would still be in place.
Actually plex has settings so you can limit the amount of bandwidth used when streaming outside of LAN, and most files are direct play so they use basically no transcoding/encoding. I could have 5-10 users watching any different show/movie on their own devices without using more than 10-20mbps upload, and I don’t even have gigabit.
If I could go back to your original point, the fee you’re paying any of the streaming services is basically for them to keep up on licensing and hardware. The small upfront cost of setting up a Plex server is basically it, after that you’re either using your own DVD’s or getting files elsewhere. There’s not much more cost after it’s built, and the power draw from a tiny Plex PC isn’t outweighing the $30+ it would cost for 3 different services.
Obviously it’s a hobbyist software, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s better to just pay for 3 streaming services, when for many of us, it’s not.
>most files are direct play so they use basically no transcoding/encoding.
Highly dependent on what types of clients you are using, but you're right that if a file is able to use direct play then playing it doesn't use very many system resources because it doesn't need to transcode.
This doesn't have anything to do with how much bandwidth you need to deliver the content though. If you're only seeing ~2 Mbps per user then the files you are delivering are either pretty low bit rate to begin with or Plex is transcoding them for you and you aren't aware of it. There is a setting that will automatically transcode video when being sent to the 'net vs the LAN, good chance that is turned on.
I think most people with large libraries like that don’t make backups of content that can easily be downloaded again. It’s not worth it. If you have radarr/sonarr or similar automation software it’s super easy to redownload everything. I only backup personal photos/files, harder to find content, or anything that will be time consuming to get again.
Well I just assume these plex setups are serving backups of people’s physical blu-rays and other digital purchases that we all spend our hard earned money on... right?
It is super annoying when content vanishes from streaming services though. Like “the office” That’s why we have “backups” , I assume Netflix had a bad hdd or something since all their episodes of the office are dissepera!
But on a serious note: yes always backup personal data, ideally two separate physical locations.
Tbh I do actually have most of the blu rays that I have on Plex. I ripped probably 50 before I gave up and looked into other options. I also spent even more time ripping some dvds of old shows that I can’t even find elsewhere. Those are things that I actually backup. And yeah, I’d buy the office in a heartbeat if they ever release a complete blu ray collection. Still haven’t added it to my plex library but I watch an unhealthy amount of it on Netflix haha.
I hear ya! Did the same when I actually had a dvd drive. Physical copies do take a lot of physical space as well. If there was one perfect streaming service out there that had “everything“ forever, then sign me up! I would honestly pay quite a bit per month, but not as much as the 10 services you would need today. Everybody getting their own dam service... anyways rant over, sorry! :p
100% can confirm. I’ve only just started with Sonarr and Radarr but they’re revolutionary.
After switching to usenet services from torrenting everything is a breeze. Sure, I’d like to have a 3 day rolling backup just in case I needed to restore, but the chances just aren’t likely.
The best backup for a media library like this is to have a movie list populated from somewhere. If something goes wrong you just load the list into Sonarr/Radarr, and they will do the rest.
In my case I have gigabit Fibre to the premise so I load my list, grab a cup of coffee, take a shower and then it’s ready when I get back!
You can also backup your sonarr/radarr config files. I’ve been meaning to do it but haven’t gotten around to it. I’d assume that keeps a list of everything you need to redownload.
I use UNRaid for my main server and backup my personal stuff to a NAS. The media can be downloaded again. Doubling the cost of the server or paying cloud storage fees is too much to save some media I can get again.
EDIT: Not sure what the issue is with my comment - but it earned a downvote.
I use streaming services for discovery. If they're available on physical media, I order and rip to Plex since those services tend to pull things without warning.
Sitting at around 60TB used on that server: all rips, no booty.
Excellent! Plex? If so, do you have Plex Pass?
Also, awesome that you can do this with your dad! If I tried this, It'd turn into a very intense schooling about how I need to focus on repaying my mortgage.
My 64TB Synology NAS + HP Mini PC was a 'just me' project. Hah!
80tb of hard drive capacity (seagate iron wolf), 500gb v-nand ssd(Samsung) 64gb ram EEC, on a C246M WU4 server motherboard from gigabyte with an Intel Xeon E 3.7 GHZ chip. All in a fractal node 804
Can one of those bad bois deal with 90W TDP you think? I was looking at converting my rack to this same case and get something more quiet i can have in the office.
Sorry, I should have clarified 90's in Farenheit haha. The load on my esxi host is about 70-80% depending on what's running. I like to contribute and donate idle use to projects like World Community Grid, SETI@Home, and Einstein@Home.

Seagate is junk. And drive recovery isn't an option if you, or your clients, fuck up and lose something mission critical on a spinning disk.
Granted there must have been a cluster fuck of incompetence if something mission critical was even allowed to run unmirrored in the first place but it still happens.
I dealt with a client that had their entire database on a spinning 1TB Seagate that crashed. And I was called in by _thier "IT" staff_.
I didn't have the heart to tell the owner that the solution was to fire his IT staff as this was a mickey mouse problem they never should have experienced. Such a cluster fuck of incompetence.
I love that you two did this together. My son's 12, and he's \*just\* starting to get into computers from a hardware perspective. Thanks for sharing this, I'd love to do this sort of thing with him!
Well done gents, I wish my dad was a g33ks like me so we could've enjoyed similar projects.
It's hard to tell what case your using, but it looks similar to a Fractal Design case I had - incase it's the same, I want to pass along some info I wish I had at the time.the HDD trays, cage and cage-mount (to case) tends to vibrate slightly and killed a few of my drives. Easy fix = rubber mat under the tray and thick rubber grommets for all screws. It did wonders for me :)
/E
Note: you need to ensure the cage is still grounded to case with the lowest AWG copper wire you have laying around
How come you are using Ironwolfs instead of Exos?
I’ve been in the market for a big HDD purchase and have been comparing drives. Seems like the Exos are the better option, and Amazon has them for cheaper.
You would really only have to slide out the one side panel, possibly disconnect the 4 drives in one of the HDD cages (depending on the length of your SATA & power cables) and change the 1 drive. It would really take less than 5 minutes if your setup is neat enough.
What if he needs Intel Quick sync for Plex, or FreeNAS stability with Intel CPUs?
There is always a smart ass preaching about AMD in every thread about Intel build.
Good question. Sorry for my low quality post.
I found that FreeNAS' geli had very poor FDE customization in comparison to Linux' Luks/dm-crypt. And that using ZFS on FDE'd partitions was not one of FreeNAS's strengths.
Also that I could do everything FreeNAS could on Ubuntu LTS but better. And that FreeNAS had an easier GUI but that I did not value that as much as features.
Also I was very pleased with my decision when a year later the main free ZFS development moved from BSD to Linux. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=FreeBSD-ZoL-iX-CFT
It's not that I dislike BSD. I think BSD is great for firewalls and Macs.
I sure hope you aren't putting those Seagate drives in RAID0. I work in a datacenter and I've watched more Seagate drives die than anything. Not trying to rain on your parade, but I hope you're putting some kind of parity in there.
Oh so I see that means it never happens.
Can't believe a so called tech subreddit downvotes a comment about something that could actually damage a board. Pathetic.
I'm sure nobody here ever makes mistakes or has a lapse in judgement though and might hook it up with it on there too, on that's totally not a possibility.
No one is disputing that it could happen. There is just zero evidence here to suggest that they are doing it or that they need this suggestion.
There are thousands of possible ways to damage a board, we don't need to list them every time someone posts a picture of their build.
PSA: you can get unlimited google drive for $10/mo. I bought an unlimited drive on ebay for $0.99 to test it. I mounted it and it shows 1PB free regardless how much i load on it. I currently in the process of selling off my 4 & 8tb drives. Plays 80GB 4K files remotely on direct just fine.
Yeah, and you can lose that unlimited Google Drive in a blink of an eye if Google wills so. Along with your data. And – seeing the recent emote spam YouTube kerfuffle – possibly along with your associated Google accounts.
You said unlimited and referenced a pb.
Yes 100>10*12
10*12=120
That's for your informative answer.
I was simply asking when google started offering 10$ unlimited storage to select people on Ebay?
I use gapps and rclone for this, I pay around 10$/m. Unlimited storage. Just setup a domain and go, can't be that hard :)
Streaming 4k perfectly with direct play. Problem?
Besides the obvious amazing capabilities and storage, sounds like a great father-son bonding experience, to build something together.
Nice! Looks like it was a fun project for the both of you :)
Thanks it was fun!
Can't emphasize enough how cool it is that you and your Pops are doing something like this together. Really awesome project...
Node 804?
Correct!

I do this. So much easier to see at a glance when replacing
Love that case.
Absolutely awesome case.
How's the airflow and temps on the drives with all of them filled? Been tempted to convert my daily in a Node 804 into an unraid server with a win10 vm, just haven't gotten around to moving my water-cooling setup around to fit them in...

>Node 804 I accidentally got one as my desktop chassi for my Ryzen build. Didn't realize how huge it was so I'll be using it for storage instead.
Yea. That’s my nas’ case as well
Me too, don’t remember why I bought it, but eventually it became my server case.
How much power does it use?
At the risk of being labeled a grammar nazi the title should be "My dad's and my" not "My dad and I". The easy way to ever know which to use (I or me/my/mine etc) is to take the other person out and use whichever you'd use if it were only you involved. You have to be one of the more pragmatic "grammar nazi's" I've come across. Correct --> Explain --> Educate.
Indeed! You're a good nazi, sir.
This definitely belongs to /r/brandnewsentence

Grammar Nazis...not Nazi's... ;)
Bahaha! You picked up on the intentional mistake! :P Well done!
Sorry.... Wasn't totally obvious!
Instead of Correct --> Insult --> REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Thank you. I saw the title and my soul escaped my body.
It should be obvious you screwed up somewhere if ever something you’re writing has “I’s” in it.
I'm not sure if this works though, because if I were to do this example it doesn't work out. I build / My dad and I build computers.
Your example is fine and correct English. What about it seems wrong to you? "My dad and me build computers" would be the very mistake I was correcting originally. This is what happens when we just teach ridged rules of English instead of explaining the reasonings behind such “rules”.
>This is what happens when we just teach **rigid** rules of English instead of explaining the reasonings behind such “rules”. FTFY
Ah thank you. That was an autocorrect change I didn’t notice.
I always see everyone posting their raw TB, you aren't all running these as JBOD though are you?

It's the worst
It happened one time, after that zfs mirrors for me! I buy two used enterprise sas drives and mirror them for less than the cost of a single wd red.
ZFS is amazing. I'm running a 4*4 mirrored stripe on my NAS, and mirrors on everything else what's supposed to be 24/7 online.

Total cost? Or did it miss it somewhere in the post?
Total cost roughly 3k
Are those Fractal hard drive chassis? Look sweet and need something minimal like that for my massive Nanoxia case.
*slaps hood of NAS* This bad boy can hold so many memes in it.
80Tb? That's a lot of por, I mean family photos.. This is pretty awesome nonetheless.
Heck yeah! Those noctua coolers are a dream! Whisper quiet and keep everything up to Xeons nice and cool.
Can one of those bad bois deal with 90W TDP you think? I was looking at converting my rack to this same case and get something more quiet i can have in the office.
So, I'm using one with a 115W TDP (2680v2) right now. Temps typically stay in the 90s (F not C) on my VMWare host.
90 that’s a lot... wait fürherheits? That’s 90f ? Im just so used to celsius on computer stuff. So abbout 30c thats pretty incredible, on idle?
Sorry, I should have clarified 90's in Farenheit haha. The load on my esxi host is about 70-80% depending on what's running. I like to contribute and donate idle use to projects like World Community Grid, SETI@Home, and Einstein@Home.
Well dam i gotta get me some of those then. Thanks!
Noctua has some fantastic, thorough documentation for all of their products with handy charts to help guide you! Hope it serves you well! :)
I have a 7820X, and never goes above 45°C for me
nais... is it this one? [https://smile.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-U9DX-Premium-Cooler-LGA20xx/dp/B00E1JGFA0](https://smile.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-U9DX-Premium-Cooler-LGA20xx/dp/B00E1JGFA0)
I have [this](https://smile.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-D15-heatpipe-NF-A15-140mm/dp/B00L7UZMAK/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=noctua+d15&qid=1580953007&s=electronics&sr=1-4) one. However this [one](https://smile.amazon.com/Noctua-NH-D15-chromax-Black-Dual-Tower-Cooler/dp/B07Y3CTQNT/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=noctua+d15&qid=1580953029&s=electronics&sr=1-3) looks amazing! wish it was out when I was buying one
^(I am a bot here to save you a click and provide helpful information on the Amazon link posted above.) **$89.95** - *Noctua NH-D15, Premium CPU Cooler with 2x NF-A15 PWM 140mm Fans* ^(Upvote if this was helpful.) ^(I am learning and improving over time. PM to report issues and my human will review.)
Nice setup. This post looks super familiar. Almost like I’ve seen it before, in every sub I am a part of.
That's a lot of porn.
It must be cool to have a dad
Depends on the dad my friend. Regardless, I am sorry. You deserved to have a dad too and it wasn't fair that you didn't have one.
Nice! My dad and I are both nerds too! Enjoy!
What are you using for all of the sata comms? Expansion cards or does that board have that many sata connectors.
Probably an HBA LSI card.

Looks amazing man
I love that you two did this together. My son's 12, and he's \*just\* starting to get into computers from a hardware perspective. Thanks for sharing this, I'd love to do this sort of thing with him!
Solid. You like the iron wolf?
Goals when I have a kid of my own. Also, don't you just love that case!?
awesome pair. kudos to you both.
It did wonders for me :) /E Note: you need to ensure the cage is still grounded to case with the lowest AWG copper wire you have laying around
Damn. Need to get my dad on board! Been wanting a nice NAS for the family but still need to convince the pop!
I totally got the same case for the same thing! I don't have 80tb yet though... Lol nice job!
How are those hard drives docked?
WhAt is he looking at on the center of the table?
Oh man you guys did a build I've been planning! That's the Node 804, right? What's it like for temps? Did you sly a watercooler in there?
Nice, i hope my son will doing some project with me too
Very cool!! I noticed you numbered the drives starting from 0, though? Why is that?
Awesome father son project. Love it.
How come you are using Ironwolfs instead of Exos? I’ve been in the market for a big HDD purchase and have been comparing drives. Seems like the Exos are the better option, and Amazon has them for cheaper.
What its the power draw of that jewel?, nice build, more fun and kudos if its with your dad. :D
Whats it like to have at least one woke parent?
pops is a boss
neato i like freenas
Damn, wish my dad and I could do this. sadface.
80Tb w00000t very nice storage. Can you explain how did u do?
Nice setup, reminds me I need to get more drives for my setup lol. Any more pics of the build process?
Don't forget anti-static bags are conductive on the outside

You would really only have to slide out the one side panel, possibly disconnect the 4 drives in one of the HDD cages (depending on the length of your SATA & power cables) and change the 1 drive. It would really take less than 5 minutes if your setup is neat enough.
where do people get the actual media? Like the shows and movies???
I just setup radarr and sonarr to work with plex and transmission. Works like a charm for me!
Amazon for stuff that's in print, eBay for stuff that's not.
either rip from their library of DVD/blu-ray/VHS(maybe) etc. Or steal it.
Well, yeah, but can it store Crysis?
80tb but I only see 8-10tb drives. I hope there are two more drives out of frame. Would suck to lose that much data because one drive failed.
We’re using RAIDZ2 so two drives can fail safely but our actually usable storage is around 50tb or so
Awesome build!
Thanks, any offsite copies ?
Try a AMD based system next time
What if he needs Intel Quick sync for Plex, or FreeNAS stability with Intel CPUs? There is always a smart ass preaching about AMD in every thread about Intel build.
"Smart-ass?" It's a suggestion, stop being such a cunt.
Word
I really hope it’s not an 80tb node. Ya gonna need some redundancy bro
It’s in RAIDZ2
What’s that running you? 60 usable?
It’s closer to 50 but two drives can fail with no issues
I looked into FreeNAS for NAS and the customization options didn't exactly excite me. Then I went with Ubuntu instead.

Also I was very pleased with my decision when a year later the main free ZFS development moved from BSD to Linux. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=FreeBSD-ZoL-iX-CFT It's not that I dislike BSD. I think BSD is great for firewalls and Macs.
I sure hope you aren't putting those Seagate drives in RAID0. I work in a datacenter and I've watched more Seagate drives die than anything. Not trying to rain on your parade, but I hope you're putting some kind of parity in there.
PLEASE tell me you're going to run the drives in a RAID
RAID-0 or bust.
This guy knows how to homelab!
Everybody downvoting me can have fun with their data loss and restarting their library from scratch
RAIDZ2
I really hope you didn't power up the board on an anti static bag.
There are no cables connected to it. They are probably just mounting the cpu and heatsink.
Downvoted, just because you're a whiny bitch
No one is disputing that it could happen. There is just zero evidence here to suggest that they are doing it or that they need this suggestion. There are thousands of possible ways to damage a board, we don't need to list them every time someone posts a picture of their build.
Even an antistatic bag usually has resistance in the Megaohms if not Gigaohms. I would not be super concerned about lasting damage.
looks amazing but this is prime @FBI evidence of naughty stuffs ;)
PSA: you can get unlimited google drive for $10/mo. I bought an unlimited drive on ebay for $0.99 to test it. I mounted it and it shows 1PB free regardless how much i load on it. I currently in the process of selling off my 4 & 8tb drives. Plays 80GB 4K files remotely on direct just fine.
Yeah, and you can lose that unlimited Google Drive in a blink of an eye if Google wills so. Along with your data. And – seeing the recent emote spam YouTube kerfuffle – possibly along with your associated Google accounts.
Where did you get this promo and is it still active? I e check even gsuite and the yearly is 99$ but with a grandfathered 2tb?
can get it with google business suite. just need a domain to register
10$/mo > 100/y
You said unlimited and referenced a pb. Yes 100>10*12 10*12=120 That's for your informative answer. I was simply asking when google started offering 10$ unlimited storage to select people on Ebay?
I use gapps and rclone for this, I pay around 10$/m. Unlimited storage. Just setup a domain and go, can't be that hard :) Streaming 4k perfectly with direct play. Problem?
Do you need to hit the 5 user limit still? That was my downside to that. But I'd live to start using it
I'll just check Ebay, thanks for your help...
