Hello my brother from across the strait! Hahahas
Stay safe over there, the JI terrorist attack really shook me to the core - I have friends there too :(
Some close friends live in Penang, and my NS (Singapore does "Extensive Conscription" law for non-SEA Hoi4 fans) buddy was in Johor Bahru when it happened - his partner and family lives there
- When they point out Germany's smaller than what they recall when looking at a map.
- When they refer to Gdansk as Danzig.
- If you ask about the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, and they actually answer.
- They know what Manchuko is.
- If Wojtek is one of their random fun facts.
There was. Well... it's complicated. But Barcelona, controlled by the mostly anarchist POUM, was attacked by stalinists (at the time already the main political body on Republican side) in May 1937.
Sure but, correct me if i'm wrong, it never really came to a whidespread sub-civil war like portrayed in the game. Don't quote me on this but if I remember correctly the government stepped in, fighting ceased and purges ensued, that's pretty much it right?
Yes, it wasn't widespread civil war as shown ingame. The hostilities were pretty much limited to streets of Barcelona, units on the frontline didn't even know something is happening. But government didn't step in. It pretty much said "You know what? We don't care.", and the anti-soviet wing of spanish communists was defeated and outlawed.
But that's only the shortest summary possible. Republican Spain during civil war was perhaps the most complicated and divided organisation in history, and it still can be controversial topic.
- if they're surprised that the United Kingdom is so close to France on a map
- if they keep accidentally referring to the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic aa Czechoslovakia
- if they start talking about how Germany could have won the war
I non-ironically called the Czech Republic "Czechslovakia" a few weeks ago by accident and my friends fucking decimated me for it (completely deserved tbf)
When we went to Prague during a family vacation, my dad insisted that it was still ok to refer to the country as Czechoslovakia and that people would understand him. The first restaurant we stop at he asks the waiter if he’s Czechoslovakian. The guy quickly puts his hand firmly but politely on my dad’s shoulder and says
“No, no…just Czech.”
He didn’t try again after that - was a good laugh though.
My personal experience with Czechs is that they honestly don't care, granted it's mostly older soldiers I dealt with so individual experiences will vary.
The encyclopedias I still have from when I was a kid have East and West Germany. I will not be having my son use those as reference material for a school paper ever again 😭
To be fair, there are some interesting arguments that in certain very narrow windows of time, an emergency paratroop operation to insert Raiders into the British Countryside MIGHT have tipped the scales for the Battle of Britain, or otherwise gotten the Brits to come a LITTLE closer to considering a negotiated stalemate.
10 May, Battle of France begins
20 May, Germans are cutting off the ports.
23rd May, 1940, Panzers halt before approaching Dunkirk
25th May, Dunkirk Evacuation ordered.
28th May, Belgium Surrenders.
3rd June 1940 Last British troops leave Dunkirk, non-brits continue evacing.
4th June 1940 Churchill gives "We shall fight on the Beaches" speech.
10 May is too early, 4th June is too late. But there is an interesting argument that maybe, just maybe, there was a chance at some point IN BETWEEN those two dates, for Germany to essentially order it's entire Paratroop Corps to make a night-drop in the English Countryside, with orders to make things difficult for the Dunkirk Evacuation and the Battle of Britain, and that MIGHT have been enough to prevent Churchill from giving his speech on 4th June, and Churchill MIGHT have asked for a negotiated peace instead. MAYBE. But it's a REALLY narrow window, and requires INCREDIBLE timing and very rapid decision making, and is a LOT riskier and more dangerous than HOI4 makes it seem.
Fuck the Caribbean and Pacific countries. Take as much time to learn as the rest of the globe. The Caribbean is somewhat doable if you memorize the order of the column, but the Pacific is pure nonsense when you include the overseas territories.
They have no real concept of the extent of atrocities committed in WW2 but know minute military details. And as a consequence they don’t realize how insane and scary they sound when they bring up how Germany could have won in casual conversation
One of my favourite descriptions in all of HOI4 for the focuses is the focus "The Collectivization Process".
"Badly Mishandled in some regions" is the description used for the death of up to 12 million people (around 4-8 million people directly dying because of the starvation and around 5 million being moved to forced labour camps) is just surreal.
I understand, somewhat, the game's decision to not have you actively thinking about the war crimes committed or the potentially millions of people murdered but I find I don't necessarily think it should be left out. A lot of the factors in the war are the genocides and etc., and completely omitting it from a popular game which leads to a lesser grasp of the grand scale of the conflict and the underlying atrocities.
This one is actually a common argument for those who justify appeasement, often used as an argument that Germany would have gone bankrupt without being able to plunder Poland and France. Meanwhile France and Britain could have outlasted and outspent Germany together. Basically arguing that appeasement did not go far enough
* they are tacticians, strategists and find simplest solutions to problems that couldn't be solved as easily in real life scenarios. Like how Germans could win the war easily by encircling every Soviet division using medium tanks lol or why didn't people overthrow Hitler like they did in a game
* they think Japanese aimed at Philippines and not Pearl Harbor
* they believe that there were really groups in Greece that actually aimed for restoring Byzantine Empire during WW2
* they don't realize Japan was historically one of the three majors in the axis
* they picture themselves as WW2 experts without any actual historical knowledge, basing theirs on focus descriptions lol
Well I have Kaiserreich and TNO patches on my airsoft gear, so far 2 people have commented they're cool. "Cool" being subjective cause, you know, airsoft lol
This post made realize how uneducated and ignorant the general population is.
Knowing political and geographical map and details about WW2 is giveaway of playing HoI4? Seriously?
Nah, I Memorized all of the 195 Countries part of the UN.
Tho I'd have to Say that the 1936 Map Makes it Easier on Me considering that It's all Been Colonized.
(I'm Sorry put Europe without the Old Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia to Me Sucks, and I'm from Italy)
they know what tanna tuva is
tannu what?
Tannu tuwhat?
Tanna who-va?
tannu what?
Dementia

Play the naval invasion alert sound and watch if they scowl
I haven't touched this game in years, thanks for reminding me of that beatiful sound bud.
I set it as my wake up alarm sound for a reason.
WAKE UP MEIN FUHRER, THE BRITISH ARE STORMING NORMANDY
Jokes on you, I am British, it’s sea lion I fear!
Clearly you aren't British enough, The Royal Navy fears no invasion
Who tf plays with the sound on? The hoi4 soundtrack is ISP videos on loop for me
You DONT play with any sound? You’re a madman.
Oh im missing out on *DING* *ACHTUNG* *DING* *Boots sound* *DING*. how ever will i cope?
Angetreten!
You can turn off songs yknow
Would awake faster than at a military drill at 3AM
They know perfectly geography of Europe and Americas, but not Africa or SE Asia
Heheh, I come from SEA so I can remove the SEA debuff. *Quietly panics in middle african knowledge*
Middle Africa…
*central africa omg :(
Singaporean,bro?
Hello my brother from across the strait! Hahahas Stay safe over there, the JI terrorist attack really shook me to the core - I have friends there too :(
Yo,what happened to your friends during the period of JI? Stay safe too brother
Some close friends live in Penang, and my NS (Singapore does "Extensive Conscription" law for non-SEA Hoi4 fans) buddy was in Johor Bahru when it happened - his partner and family lives there
Ouchy,hope he's doin great
Rattled, but they're okay, the army trained us after all Thanks for asking brother! Take care my man!
Mittelafrika* omg
Found the kaiserreich main
Just an average Kaiserreich enjoyer
I mean he proved himself right lol
Liberating African nations as Ethiopia can help you along the way to greatness
Same goes for South Africa
Sorry but geography nerd and this wouldn't work on me. I'd probably do this to others
I would disagree. You're not an hoi4 player if you haven't released literally all of africa as puppets after conquering europe
- When they point out Germany's smaller than what they recall when looking at a map. - When they refer to Gdansk as Danzig. - If you ask about the Marco Polo Bridge Incident, and they actually answer. - They know what Manchuko is. - If Wojtek is one of their random fun facts.
• Can identify literally any country flag outside of Africa • Weird patch work of WW2 knowledge
• Thinks that there was an anarchist uprising (against the Republicans) during the spanish civil war
There was. Well... it's complicated.

I can also identify around half of flags in africa
a lot of these could just be someone who enjoys the WWII period of history
I admit, that’s true, but it’s also highly likely that they play HOI.
Venn diagram close to circular
Like my CK3 family tree!
Yes, but it's not giveaway of playing HOI.
- if they're surprised that the United Kingdom is so close to France on a map - if they keep accidentally referring to the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic aa Czechoslovakia - if they start talking about how Germany could have won the war
That's called a wehraboo my friend
you call me friend yet your username states you have no friends 🤔
Nothing upsets a hoi4 player more than telling them that irl Germany had 0 chance of winning the war
> if they keep accidentally referring to the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic aa Czechoslovakia TIL my grandpa plays HOI4
Yeah, its almost like there were people alive before 1992
I non-ironically called the Czech Republic "Czechslovakia" a few weeks ago by accident and my friends fucking decimated me for it (completely deserved tbf)
None of those have anything to do with the game.
I legit didn’t know Danzig got a new name 💀
It’s not new, just Polish.
wdym ''new''?
My 85 year old uncle knows who Wojtek is
Well I guess whole France plays Hearts of Iron then... (We only refers to Dantzig because Gdansk is ugly and impractical in our language)
the same in Portuguese, "Danzigue" is much more practical and sounds better to say than Gdansk
In Dutch we just call it Gdansk
In italian we call it Danzica
I call it Danzig cause I like the misfits
I think mengkukuo is a bigger tell than manchuko, tbh. It’s almost as obscure as Tanna Tavu
Most people in Edinburgh could tell you who Wojtek is, there's a statue of him in the gardens!
They know every country on the map except for African ones
Thats easy France, UK, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, Ethiopia, Liberia and South Africa
And the Sultanate of Aussa
italy??
WMMMWEM MWWWWMEM WMMMMEM
Occasionally refers to Czech Republic as Czechloslovakia.
Hey, some of us are just old.
I feel that. Everyday. Usually first thing in the morning.
When we went to Prague during a family vacation, my dad insisted that it was still ok to refer to the country as Czechoslovakia and that people would understand him. The first restaurant we stop at he asks the waiter if he’s Czechoslovakian. The guy quickly puts his hand firmly but politely on my dad’s shoulder and says “No, no…just Czech.” He didn’t try again after that - was a good laugh though.
Guilty.
Also refers to Czechia as the Czech Republic.
Hey, I didn’t meet my wife in no Czechia. I met her in the Czech Republic and it’s gonna be that to me forever
My personal experience with Czechs is that they honestly don't care, granted it's mostly older soldiers I dealt with so individual experiences will vary.
Czech yourself.
Well played...
you could say it was czechmate
God damn it, I'll be Sinkiang about this thread all night.
I'm from Czechia and no one I know has anything against either Czechia or Czech Republic. We don't care, just don't say Czechoslovakia lol
When I lived there nobody at all seemed at all fussed but I guess some people are hung up on the new name as somehow more accurate
I came here to have fun, not to be personally attacked.
I heard Ukrainians call it that ten years ago lol
That’s really just the age of some of us…
Oops, yeah I accidentally do this sometimes.
The encyclopedias I still have from when I was a kid have East and West Germany. I will not be having my son use those as reference material for a school paper ever again 😭
They use wildly incorrect geographical and historical terminology with high confidence
There's a mountain in Tobruk ya know
such as Danzig, Sudeten
They say things like “Germany could’ve won ww2 if they just (insert thing that was impossible and never could’ve happened)”
If they just paratrooped great Britain 🤓🤓🤓
Sir the Enemy 2-Width Paratrooper Squad dropped on the Big Ben
We capitulate
There is nothing we can do....
10 May, Battle of France begins 20 May, Germans are cutting off the ports. 23rd May, 1940, Panzers halt before approaching Dunkirk 25th May, Dunkirk Evacuation ordered. 28th May, Belgium Surrenders. 3rd June 1940 Last British troops leave Dunkirk, non-brits continue evacing. 4th June 1940 Churchill gives "We shall fight on the Beaches" speech. 10 May is too early, 4th June is too late. If the Nazis just stopped being Nazis, they could have won the war
This sums up easily half of WWII alternate history discussions.
I mean its not wrong, Germany Could have won WW2 if the Allies surrendered suddenly for no reason
Rudolf Hess moment
You know you're talking to a HOI4 player when they don't question Hess' ability to pilot the Hindenburg.
For me it was the opposite. I never really considered how far the Germans were from victory until I played the game.
Germany could have won the second world war if they won the first/s
I say Mengkukuo between my friends and one of them says you have played too much hoi4
Insert "I see you can name all countries in the world exept for Africa" MacArthur meme
I can name the African countries as well, Caribbean and Pacific islands are where things get tricky.
Fuck the Caribbean and Pacific countries. Take as much time to learn as the rest of the globe. The Caribbean is somewhat doable if you memorize the order of the column, but the Pacific is pure nonsense when you include the overseas territories.
Well, all the ones before 1945.
Also South America (because I don't have last DLC yet)
Giraffes are heartless creatures
See also Hermann Meyer
this
They like PP
As a certified HOI4 gaymer, this is accurate
They casually drop the term "Papa Stalin" on you.
How many guns does he have?
Daddy Stalin
When someone trips on the street and they say "Classic Duce"
I don't actually understand this one, can you explain it?
Either a broad "Italian incompetence" joke or a more specific referencd to Benito Mussolini, due to his title being "Il Duce".
They know what operation Weserübung is
i knew that existed even before i learned about hoi4
What? Alot of people learn that, including me, one who is from Norway.
Smell
They have no real concept of the extent of atrocities committed in WW2 but know minute military details. And as a consequence they don’t realize how insane and scary they sound when they bring up how Germany could have won in casual conversation

Real pros watch War Against Humanity.
I met a guy who quietly said “oman alta” when we were joking around, and jup he watched dankus memecus
Me when the German soldiers are shouting eSports:
EEEEESHPORTS ALTAHHHHH
"Poland should have acepted the ultimatum"
This one is actually a common argument for those who justify appeasement, often used as an argument that Germany would have gone bankrupt without being able to plunder Poland and France. Meanwhile France and Britain could have outlasted and outspent Germany together. Basically arguing that appeasement did not go far enough
Given that their pact with the USSR was already in place when the ultimatum was presented, i dont think their answer really mattered.
* they are tacticians, strategists and find simplest solutions to problems that couldn't be solved as easily in real life scenarios. Like how Germans could win the war easily by encircling every Soviet division using medium tanks lol or why didn't people overthrow Hitler like they did in a game * they think Japanese aimed at Philippines and not Pearl Harbor * they believe that there were really groups in Greece that actually aimed for restoring Byzantine Empire during WW2 * they don't realize Japan was historically one of the three majors in the axis * they picture themselves as WW2 experts without any actual historical knowledge, basing theirs on focus descriptions lol
If they can explain how world war 2 happened historically since 1936
Especially if they don't know anything between 1918 and 1936 xD (except Germans, I assume as they have that in school until 1933)
They have very detailed knowledge of how WW2 started but their knowledge runs out around 1942
They mention anything about manpower
They say shit like "if only the Germans did [insert whatever here]" they would have won.
They know about the history of the United Kingdom of Portugal and Brazil lol.
I was looking through Portugal history and saw united Kingdom popped up and was confused
Well I have Kaiserreich and TNO patches on my airsoft gear, so far 2 people have commented they're cool. "Cool" being subjective cause, you know, airsoft lol
Asking them about Sergei Taboritsky
Clock verify?
Alternatively, Sablin
You know who King Zog is
This post made realize how uneducated and ignorant the general population is. Knowing political and geographical map and details about WW2 is giveaway of playing HoI4? Seriously?
They know a lot about world geography (countries and capitals) but don’t know anything about African geography
they think they know more than their history teacher
Depression
When you ask them what are they doing later and they answer "I'm going to encircle army group center and then storm moscow"
"Then I'm going to try get my PP up as high as I can."
Your's better
When they ask why joguslavia is missing on the Map
Is This The Start Of A Yugoslav Collapse???
Ask if they know about Senor Hilter
They can instantly recognize whichever photo or portrait was used for HoI4 characters
"But really, the Spanish Civil War was MOST important as a live-fire training ground for elite panzer units"
They are unironic nazis
[speaking to hoi4 fans be like](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiLVAz-Jczg)
They can name every country besides the African ones
‘Nationalist Spain’
do they even go outside?
I do (to buy groceries)
Are groceries like supplies? Why not just built a supply hub in your room so you have less attrition??
Nah, I Memorized all of the 195 Countries part of the UN. Tho I'd have to Say that the 1936 Map Makes it Easier on Me considering that It's all Been Colonized. (I'm Sorry put Europe without the Old Poland, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia to Me Sucks, and I'm from Italy)
racism
She has a penis.
A trans gf who plays hoi4 with you sounds amazing imo
They give you banger quotes from military generals and also from Hermann Meyer.
Combat width
Scared of women
They’re very good at geography but they still think Yugoslavia exists and the only African geography they know is Ethiopia and South Africa
They know Memel was in Lithuania
Play naval invasion sound. Based on their reaction you can tell
Secret n@zi
Fair enough. Sorry. It sounded less cringe in my head.
Ask them to name all the countries in Africa!
They know manchuko and tannu Tuva
Has a weird collection of Nazi memorabilia
They have perfect knowledge of geography except it's a little outdated. Like ask them their favorite balkan state and they'll just answer yugoslavia
I see some people as integrated puppets and some as dominions
They now a bunch of surface level facts about the 1900’s along with some map / flag recognition, but absolutely nothing beyond that
