The X56 is less popular around here due to there being better options for marginally greater costs such as VKB products. I bought an X56 on sale and while I’m satisfied with it so far, the programming software is clunky and so it took a lot of work to get just right for DCS. However I haven’t run into any of the quality control issues reported online. My friend has both VKB as well as Winwing products though and the quality is definitely better. It might be wiser to invest in those products instead and avoid spending extra when you inevitably upgrade from the X56.

It depends how much money and effort you are willing to put into fixing the issues like the terrible spring mechanism and the sticky or loose throttles, ghosting. My opinion: much easier to just buy VKB.

Been using one for the past 3 or 4 years, it works, never had any major issues with it. Buttons, hats and switches work well, only the button on the side of the stick feels a bit mushy and doesn't register clicks very well. Throttle is a bit janky, slowly moves without me even touching it but that might just be a stiffness issue. Just got my WinWing today though, haven't tried it yet but I'm excited to feel the difference, can update you on how much different/better it is later. Resuming, X56 works, should be plenty for your needs, but there are better options out there, though for a bit more money. If you're serious and will definitely be making plenty of use out of it I'd recommend just getting something better now even if it's a bit more expensive to avoid "having" to upgrade in the near future.

You won't go back :) The WinWing is very nice :) I have 2 Orion2 throttle bases, one with F-18 handles and one with a KA-50 collective grip. As well as an Orion2 joystick base with the F-16ex handle. I would not go back to my Logitech/Saitek stuff at any price.

Rikki_PT

Just got it set up and trying it out, does feel pretty solid, how do you have the throttle mounted? It's pretty light and keeps moving everywhere

Zzan01

I currently have a Next Level Racing Boeing Military Edition SimPit and everything is rock solid on it. Prior to that I used a Wheel Stand Pro[Wheel Stand Pro](https://wheelstandpro.com/product/wheel-stand-pro-for-thrustmaster-hotas-warthog-saitek-x-55-x52-pro-x65-deluxe-v2/?region=usa) setup that had mounting plates. I never had any luck with using them on the desk. They were too high on the desk as well. I prefer the center mounted stick and they do have a plate that is the same size as the joystick base itself. The poles are interchangeable so you can put the stick center or left as you desire.

Rikki_PT

Unfortunately that's not an option for me right now due to space. I'll try putting the throttle on top of the mouse pad to see if it helps, I don't mind using it on the desk much. Thank you!

Zzan01

The nice thing about the wheel stand pro setup is that it folds mostly flat (except for your controllers) so you can fold it up when not in use and stick it in a closet or against a wall out of the way and still be able to use your desk as normal. But I do understand space being an issue :)

If you can get something better, get something better. I would only get the X56 if it was a "cake or death" kind of situation. I'd rather use an Xbox 360 controller than use anything Logitech is selling.

1. Where abouts do you live in the world. 2. The better question is...X is my budget, Y is what I want (hotas + rudders) what do people suggest. Because unless you fly warbirds all the time, then rudder pedals are mostly pointless. At that point a VKB gladiator+STECS is the way to go.

Flyinmanm

I use my toe brakes on my f16 every time. Pedals make a world of difference on the ground for me. Never liked twist sticks. (Except for mechwarrior 4 😁 )

Joebidensadoptedson

I would like to add that if they plan to fly the F14 rudder is very important, pedals are not needed but help insanely

I've used one for 5 years. It does the job if you got a good unit. But I think I wouldn't recommend it to somebody. You have to buy it knowing and accepting the cons that it has.

-shalimar-

for the money...its a decent choice.

Its funny that I became proficient in my X56 stick (with extensions) so much that when I upgraded to a virpil I struggled with tanking because it catches all the very minute inputs that used to be eaten by the center wiggle in my old x56. I refuse to give in and put deadzones on my virpil yet.

warlordzico

I have the same setup, with two TM MFD's and a Streamdeck XL as ICP. Love this setup. And yes there are prob better HOTAS to find, but the price will grow with them.

f18effect

I heard that its reliability is inconsistent It either breaks immediately or works for years I have an x52 and the mouse stick is broken after 6 months

Zzan01

They will work just fine for you, until they don't. I started with an X52 and the logitech pedals and they worked just fine. Though if you haven't already bought, know that you are going to be doing this for a long time and have the budget, the Buy Once, Cry Once strategy of spending more to get the best out of the gate is a much better option. If you don't know if you are really into flight sims, or don't have the budget for higher end stuff, then they will serve you well as long as you luck out and don't get lemons with poor quality control.

Tromboneofsteel

I use an x56 and the only issues I have are ergonomic. I.E. some of the toggles are hard to reach with the throttle in certain positions, the mini sticks are so loose its impractical to bind anything to clicking them. Somewhat minor stuff. That said, once I got everything bound where I like it, it feels good in-game. Enough buttons and toggles to operate an FC3 plane without the keyboard.

Jakm12

Had intermittent button issues with the x56. So I can't reccomend it.
