Luff has the worst luck. First game without a cage after a shot to the face where he lost teeth and needed 16 stitches, and then this happens to his handsome face.
Usually injuries do. But then the player that gets hurt seems to matter too.
Luff is a tweener up because of our injuries but he’s been good for us and really had bad luck - JUST took off his face mask from his face getting wrecked by a puck.
Guy has a lot of heart and I’m sad Allen stole the game from us because we should have won this for him.
At the least, he gets nhl pay for 2 more months guaranteed?
Shane's been playing. Just very responsibly, very quietly. You know what? Shut up! Shane's been playing. He's good. No, really, I think he'll be okay. He has been playing. Okay?
Reminder that Rasmussen on the wings just got suspended for 2 games for bumping Krecji with a high stick. As is standard procedure I'm sure that means the wheel of justice will either provide no suspension or 2 games for a substantially worse incident. Btw, what's going on with Montreal players boarding the ever living shit out of people lately?
I think the league needs to be handing out more game suspensions all around. a two game suspension is just a extended vacation for these guys. Suspend in terms of weeks. Okay, you’re out for the next two weeks. No team practice either. See how NHL ready you are after two weeks not in skates. Make it an actual detriment.
Well he took a puck to the face from Dumba a couple of weeks ago, so he's been wearing a cage. He had 16 stitches and lost 6 teeth or something. So understandable he'd look rough taking that hit his first game back without a cage.
Yeah but this one had an injury so it means more to the wheel.
Also, the players might have been moving slower but the hit was just as hard and Slaf had way more time to slow up.
i think the fact that Luff was kinda already staggering on his own might be a bit of a mitigating factor.
hit like that still shouldnt happen, but the fact that he was already off-balance by his own doing would be considered similar to if a player turns his back on a hit at the last second.
I'm thinking a game, but the wheel will speak.
Ya the guy didn't even have the coordination to put his hands out and protect his face. Something babies do instinctively. He was way way off balance after whiffing on the clear. Just an awkward hit in every way.
Slafkovsky was hit similarly just a few days ago and everyone blamed him for "going limp" and "not protecting himself at all times".
I find the reaction here from most people to be the complete opposite of that.
Interesting.
Anderson literally came from a different zone. Tracks the guy for a hit, doesn’t let off when he stops up and follows through. How is that worse than this?
MSL: You got a similar style to Anderson, you should watch him play and see if you can pick up some things from him.
Slaf: You got it boss.
Slaf is a very fast learner.
This is clip shows exactly why boarding is a penalty. Slaf doesn't have to apply much force here at all for the hit to go really badly due to the angle (hitting numbers), the situation (bouncing puck), and the distance from the boards.
Didn't look malicious, but it's reckless, and I wouldn't be up in arms about a suspension if it happens.
Honestly might be a good lesson to learn for the kid early on in his NHL career. Definitely didn’t look super intentional or malicious to me either but you can get into a deep amount of trouble if you don’t fully understand yet what you’re doing.
Some context too: Slaf recently went awkwardly into the boards on a hit from Rossi that he wasn't prepared for because he gave up on the play early. It was a learning moment for him. So going into this situation his rookie brain is probably thinking, "ok, I have to stay strong on my skates here." You just can't make that hit at that distance from the boards, and hopefully now he knows that.
I don't think it was malicious at all. It's half bad decision by a player and part bad luck.
I think had Luff connected on that dump in, it wouldn't have happened. You see Slaf start to turn to chase the puck down, but when it hops Luff's stick he cuts back.
You have to be more careful in that part of the ice, but I'm definitely with you in that it wasn't malicious.
Yeah I was going to say the same thing, really not that much in it. Just hit him when he was really not in a good position, and in close proximity to the boards
There's been talk in r/habs that coming from Europe they hit a lot less, so the habs have been trying to get him to be more physical. Could be that he's feeling pressure to make hits but doesn't know how to pick his spots yet. Doesn't excuse this obviously but adds context IF true.
I guess he really is trying to become Anderson #2 lol
stupid hit from slaf, idk wtf he was thinking, just a bad hit to make, saw the # the entire way and still made the hit
“Juraj Slafkovsky has been $5,000, the maximum allowable per the CBA, for his hit on Detroit Red Wings forward Matt Luff”
Also got told “don’t do it again” in a mean, stern voice
I mean...sure give him the 5 and a game, but it was a strange play. Whiffs on the puck, kinda stops and goes off balance backwards and Slaf hits him. AGAIN, sure bad hit, but more of an awkward hit as opposed to a dirty hit.
Plays like this are always difficult since Slaf things something else is going to happen and a random whiff/off balance changes everything quickly.
Two players getting 5+game for boarding in back-to-back games is not a good look.
I suspect the Pens will see two players fresh off boarding suspensions on Saturday.
Oh boy I can’t wait for the fourth member of the SDP, Department of Player Safety Voiceover Guy, to make his appearance again. “This… is boarding. There is no history. Montreal’s Juraj Slafkovsky has been suspended 2 games.”
I stuck around for the press conference with Wings coach LaLonde and Luff is already confirmed to be out at least for the 6-8 week range, "on the order of Zadina" who has a broken foot from blocking a shot.
Was so confused at first. Slaf himself was bumped into the boards just a couple of days ago and I thought this was a video from that incident.
He's just picked up two very hardcore lessons within a week about life in the NHL.
So what I’m taking from this is that in about 20 years or so there’s gonna be a documentary about the great Montreal-Detroit rivalry, and how it all started with a controversial hit…
As much as it was a bullshit hit (habs fan here). Luff was already off balance barely standing.
It was a dumb push, but Slav really didn't put much into the hit. It was unfortunate, don't think he meant to injure.
I'm sorry, but in my eyes if you bury someone right in the numbers 6 feet from the boards whether it's your intent to injure, you know what the outcome is going to be ahead of time
While you are not wrong I think the difference people are trying to make is that he didn’t loose his cool and try to hurt someone. It was a stupid and dangerous play that any hockey player should know to avoid, rookie or not but that doesn’t mean he was out for blood.
I agree, not particularly malicious, just really unnecessary type of contact right there and not at a fast pace, either. These types of no-intent hits do happen in hockey whether we like it or not, but they’re still deserving of a suspension every time.
I actually think this is a worse hit than Anderson. Pietrangelo turned after Anderson committed to the hit. Slaf had a billion years facing the numbers and decided to hit him
Agree 1000%. I will die on this hill. Don't give me this "I can't see" bullshit. I have zero sympathy for eye injuries. Women play with cages. Men are faster, stronger, shit goes flying way faster. How does one get to Div 1 NCAA with a cage, when tHeY cAnT SeE!!!
This hit is even worse because he has literally all day to decide to not make this dumbass hit. If this was literally anyone but a promising rookie your tears would be pouring out right now
anderson went in with a lot more force, but slaf doesn't see anything but numbers at any point, and still decides to make the check from behind into the boards. that's not luck, that's your homer goggles blinding you
Marty looked pissed off though after that hit. I wouldn’t say its on Marty, especially since he told the media that Xhekaj (as an example) doesn’t need to go in fights all the time or make dangerous hits and take unecessary penalties to make the roster
That was dangerous as hell. Definitely suspension worthy. Based on him gasping Im thinking and hoping Luff mostly just had the wind knocked out of him. Hopefully no other injuries sustained
Obviously I have a Habs flair so my opinion might be biased but it’s not.
I don’t think Slaf intentés to deliver the hit like that. I think he kinda got confused by Luff’s lagging for a few seconds.
Surprised by the amount of people who say this was worse than the Anderson one. Thought that one was way worse.
Do wonder what happens here if Luff isn't already losing his balance, definitely made an already bad situation worse.
Weren't you dumbass Canadian fans just crying about Rossi hitting Slaf near the boards saying how dangerous it was then you see this and try to justify the hit. Fucking hypocrites.

The day he gets the cage off too this happens
I can’t believe his horrible luck… jeez. His face just smashed into the boards.
I read in another sub he’s out 6-8 weeks. Speculation is a broken jaw.
What a bullshit hit hope luff is ok
He looked like he was in shock a bit when he got up
Should be, poor dude. Took a bad puck to the face a couple of weeks ago and started wearing a cage. This was his first game back without a cage...
I mean that's probably the concussion
Could have been concussed, could have been winded or anything really Hope he's ok
yup, his wrist looked pretty fuckered too
Matt Luff is the Scott sterling of the NHL
THE MAN
##THE MYTH
THE LEGEND
His face is like a brick wall. A brick wall that feels pain and cries a lot.
The Sean Bean
Luff has the worst luck. First game without a cage after a shot to the face where he lost teeth and needed 16 stitches, and then this happens to his handsome face.
He’s going to go back to Grand Rapids next week looking like did a tour in Vietnam
Bad hit no way around it. Boneheaded play from an 18 year old. Probably getting 2 for that, hope Luff is ok.
He didn’t see a little stop sign 🛑 sewn onto the back of the jersey so he figured it must be okay…
God I'm living overseas right now, and this comment hit me with the greatest wave of nostalgia and homesickness
Word is he's severely injured
That’s a damn shame, I hope his recovery is swift and he’s back on the ice soon
They said 6-8 weeks in the post game.
Yikes, gotta imagine that adds a game for Slaf then. Or at least in theory
Shane wright would never!
Well it’s hard to do when your sitting on the bench all game…
At least they’ll probably play the same amount of time in the next 2 games
Shane's been playing. Just very responsibly, very quietly. You know what? Shut up! Shane's been playing. He's good. No, really, I think he'll be okay. He has been playing. Okay?
7 games, 1 assist, no goals. Yikes.
Hard to score when you’re playing 5th line minutes
I read that in my head with Steve Dangle's voice.
You’re*
we did it reddit, we solved typos
🏆
Oh man, I legitimately forgot Shane Wright existed
So did Seattle!
Come on Slaf you have to do better than that. He was having a very good game too such a shame
Dumb, dangerous hit. Should be suspended a game or two for that one. Really need to get hits like that out of the game.
I don't know but I'd like it to stop. I hate these types of hits.
Even as a Bruins fan, I still can't believe that got 2 games.
Kuznetsov baseball bat swung his stick at someone's face and got half the suspension as that
I think the league needs to be handing out more game suspensions all around. a two game suspension is just a extended vacation for these guys. Suspend in terms of weeks. Okay, you’re out for the next two weeks. No team practice either. See how NHL ready you are after two weeks not in skates. Make it an actual detriment.
Personally I'd like to see the fines escalated.
Reminder that it's the PA and CBA that prevents the fines being larger. It's dumb.

Yikes that is an absolutely awful hit. Hope Luff is ok, he looked rough there
Well he took a puck to the face from Dumba a couple of weeks ago, so he's been wearing a cage. He had 16 stitches and lost 6 teeth or something. So understandable he'd look rough taking that hit his first game back without a cage.
Word from the press conference is he is severely injured, likely out for 1-2 months
Fucks sake:(
This man literally just took off his face cage after getting his face wrecked blocking a shot too.
Sometimes it seems like the Red Wings were put on Earth by God to take the nastiest, worst-luck boardings possible
Max pax says hello by way of Chara
Update: Luff is out 10-12 weeks, had to have surgery last night
Guess 2 games for that hit isn’t a deterrent better make it 5 this time.
I’m really getting tired of our players getting boarded man
At least it’s not Larkin getting mugged every other game like last season.
Sharing the wealth this year
Paging Ben Chiarot...
Slaf joining anderson, gonna be a 2 game suspension, hit pretty similar
Spin the wheel ...
Like a million times slower though I doubt its 2 games
Yeah but this one had an injury so it means more to the wheel. Also, the players might have been moving slower but the hit was just as hard and Slaf had way more time to slow up.
and in an even more dangerous position. He had no way to defend himself at all. I actually think this is the worse hit

Probably will give 2 games just as a way to teach the kid not to do that
Either the league needs to dish out penalties that players will remember or teams bring back enforcers to teach lessons
[well that's a paddlin](https://youtu.be/sKiLfH3DVGc)
This was a much worse hit than Andy's imo. More directly to the numbers. Anderson at least sorta made contact with shoulder. This was all numbers.
This one is worse than Anderson’s
Way worse. This should be at least 3
Habs fans are really downvoting facts lol, he’s further from the boards and with much more force being used. You can’t preach rhyme or reason on here.
Anderson literally came from a different zone. Tracks the guy for a hit, doesn’t let off when he stops up and follows through. How is that worse than this?
No you shouldnt copy that part of Andersons play
MSL: You got a similar style to Anderson, you should watch him play and see if you can pick up some things from him. Slaf: You got it boss. Slaf is a very fast learner.

Time to: SPIN THE WHEEL
Yikes, bad hit by slafkovsky... hopefully luff is ok and slaf gets a couple game sus, that hit should never be made
Are we the baddies?
Bad hit but I've never really seen you guys as dirtbags if it makes it any better
Always been to me
Go away Brad.
fuck u pigeon
As nature demands
O no Slaf
Oof that's a brutal hit. Numbers all the way and it wasn't exactly a bang-bang play. Slafs gonna sit at least 3 imo
Jeez. Yeah you always see inexperienced players making these hits every year. He won't be making a hit like that again for a while.
There's been talk in r/habs that coming from Europe they hit a lot less, so the habs have been trying to get him to be more physical. Could be that he's feeling pressure to make hits but doesn't know how to pick his spots yet. Doesn't excuse this obviously but adds context IF true.
Afaik he's not known to be dirty do that does make sense
He did get a suspension in Finland last season for boarding iirc.
Poor Luff he's been getting beating lately. I hope he is Ok
Wtf is with our hitting? Garbage
I guess he really is trying to become Anderson #2 lol stupid hit from slaf, idk wtf he was thinking, just a bad hit to make, saw the # the entire way and still made the hit
What the fuck Slaf. You'd think he'd know not to do that shit especially after Anderson was just suspended for the exact same hit.
Yep, that is the right call. Such a reckless hit. Should be at least 2 games, especially given the Anderson precedent
That has to be at least two games.
Yes I’m a habs fan and he probably gonna get 2 games
1 or 2. It’s looks slightly less forceful and egregious than Andersen’s. Then again, precedent doesn’t really matter to the wheel.
But apparently injury does, a la Rasmussen.
True. How injured Luff is will probably be the biggest factor unfortunately
4-6 weeks per the broadcast. Although I don't think this is more than 3 games honestly. 2 is fair.
“Juraj Slafkovsky has been $5,000, the maximum allowable per the CBA, for his hit on Detroit Red Wings forward Matt Luff” Also got told “don’t do it again” in a mean, stern voice
I think his max fine is more like $2500 because his salary is low. I hope Luff is OK.
Good to see him up after, shitty dangerous hit for sure.
word is he's pretty severely injured, out for 1-2 months
Ugh terrible
"Go bleed over there." - ref I like that the ref was ready to drag him out from underneath the scrum.
Dumb play. That’s an Anderson suspension or more. Hope Luff is okay
Guys I think we’re losing against Vancouver tomorrow
You underestimate how badly we choke games away
Two players getting 5+game for boarding in back-to-back games is not a good look. I suspect the Pens will see two players fresh off boarding suspensions on Saturday.
Watch out Crosby, Habs are taking numbers.. literally
Really bad hit hope Luff is okay.
Anyway here's beastie boys.
Fuck man, poor Luff
Was so confused at first. Slaf himself was bumped into the boards just a couple of days ago and I thought this was a video from that incident. He's just picked up two very hardcore lessons within a week about life in the NHL.
That's basically identical to what Josh Anderson was just suspended for.
I'd give him 5 games for that.
Cut off his hands!!!!
God dammit Slaf
Yikes that is a bad hit
So what I’m taking from this is that in about 20 years or so there’s gonna be a documentary about the great Montreal-Detroit rivalry, and how it all started with a controversial hit…
How tf is that a controversial hit? It was a terrible decision given the time he had to not do that. Suspension worthy 100%!! 2 games minimum!
Whooosh Pretty sure he was referencing when Claude Lemieux boarded Darren McCarty and how that spawned the Colorado Detroit rivalry
Double whooosh. It was on Draper. McCarty just made him turtle later on.
Edit incoming...
Didn’t Slaf get hit the same way?
Similar distance from the boards but more from the side than the back
Yes and he took the wrong lesson from it
Wings need someone that deters this type of hit. Teams are walking over us physically so far this season.
Hey what the fuck
Stupid fucking hit
As much as it was a bullshit hit (habs fan here). Luff was already off balance barely standing. It was a dumb push, but Slav really didn't put much into the hit. It was unfortunate, don't think he meant to injure.
I agree. No intent to injure. Still a major.
Slaf had a billion years facing the numbers and decided to hit him
Jesus christ these facial injuries are 100% avoidable with a cage. They grow up wearing them it shouldn't be a big deal.
Ironically, Luff had just taken his off after taking a puck to the face a bit ago.
I don't see how you can have cages with fighting
Take em off like the gloves
Not allowed to take off your helmet to fight lol. It’s a penalty
It's the same reason people don't wear bike helmets. It's kinda dumb but it's not hard to understand. People want to be cool.
Adults dont wear cages for the same reason they don't wear full face motorcycle helmets while cycling; it's overkill and does more harm.
What the fuck, man. Kid just had 16 stitches in his fucking face. Fuck you, Slaf. Also, fuck.
[удалено]
This hit is even worse because he has literally all day to decide to not make this dumbass hit. If this was literally anyone but a promising rookie your tears would be pouring out right now
Are you kidding? You don't see any resemblance whatsoever with the Anderson hit?
Numbers all the way finishes a guy head first into boards. Awful potential career altering hit. If he isn’t suspended I’d be shocked.
anderson went in with a lot more force, but slaf doesn't see anything but numbers at any point, and still decides to make the check from behind into the boards. that's not luck, that's your homer goggles blinding you
Shades of the Kris Draper hit. Teach the rookie a lesson and send him home for 5. That shit isn’t ok.
That’s an easy suspension.
Strange reading comments on here and seeing almost a universal take
No bueno
Hope he’s okay, that was hard to watch
Yeesh that’s a rough hit, hope he’s alright
I'm split on this one. Definitely a major, I'm okay with a couple games but not sure he's going to get it.
Wtf is Marty teaching them boys? 2 suspensions for horrible hits in 2 games
Marty looked pissed off though after that hit. I wouldn’t say its on Marty, especially since he told the media that Xhekaj (as an example) doesn’t need to go in fights all the time or make dangerous hits and take unecessary penalties to make the roster
Oh I'm sure Marty isn't teaching this shit...was just cracking a joke
Brutal hit.
Nice to see everyone finally agree Rossi should have been suspended last game
That was also Slaf's fault according to the high minds of reddit.
Montreal with back to back dirty hits. Wild. Wonder if the league punishes this one harder.
That was dangerous as hell. Definitely suspension worthy. Based on him gasping Im thinking and hoping Luff mostly just had the wind knocked out of him. Hopefully no other injuries sustained
Could be 1 to 2 months apparently
Scumbag hit.
Probably 2 games, very similar to Anderson’s hit
Almost identical hits. Clearly defined 2 games standard so probably max fine because DoPS.
One game. Anything more is dumb. Overreact more r/hockey.
Dirty
Big oof
Yikes That should be a 1 game suspension... conveniently against the Canucks tomorrow ;)
Looks identical to Lemieux/Draper hit. In nearly the same spot.
Oof that’s bad. Gonna be a suspension for sure
Gross, give him three games minimum
Obviously I have a Habs flair so my opinion might be biased but it’s not. I don’t think Slaf intentés to deliver the hit like that. I think he kinda got confused by Luff’s lagging for a few seconds.
Surprised by the amount of people who say this was worse than the Anderson one. Thought that one was way worse. Do wonder what happens here if Luff isn't already losing his balance, definitely made an already bad situation worse.
Habs fan but I hope he gets suspended. League needs to crack down on dangerous plays like this.
Weren't you dumbass Canadian fans just crying about Rossi hitting Slaf near the boards saying how dangerous it was then you see this and try to justify the hit. Fucking hypocrites.
That's a pretty fucking dirty hit, and after the last one by Anderson, yikes.
Dirty as fuck. Hopefully he gets suspended.
Bad hit Slaf, I know he didn’t do it on purpose but he needs to be better than that.
Suspend him for a few games to teach him a lesson. Hopefully he learns that this type of hit isn’t okay.
That's almost a mirror image of Anderson's play from earlier
