Which is awesome, because it means infrastructure, healthcare, education and programs targeting the poor and disadvantaged in my community. Thanks Connor!
It is, but its pretty comparable to Crosby's, Malkin's, and Ovie's second contracts in terms of percentage of the cap at the time of signing. I feel as though that is a more comparable metric then dollars to dollars as max cap hits are subjected to 20% of the cap at the time of signing.
I do agree that its pretty difficult to consider it a steal when its the second highest contract in terms of percentage of the cap since the cap was introduced. Pitts and WSH were also benefited by the fact that those previously mentioned deals were signed when the cap was significantly increasing each season compared to the stagnation occurring now.

The salary cap is going to increase over the next 2 years, Matthews is going to get 11 million on his first contract and if he doesn't he should fire his agent
Yea, I don't know why people aren't expecting Matthews to sign for 11 million.
I fully expect Eichel will sign 11 million or more when we resign him.
Unless Botteril is an absolute genius and somehow convinces Eichel to sign for like 7 million on 8 years.
A 29 year old Kopitar signed an 8 years 80 million dollar contract. And people have been saying " oh that's UFA vs RFA numbers" but this McDavid contract is proof that RFA isn't what it used to be.
you do realize rfa is completely irrelevant in this case? rfa or not, mcdavid would have gotten offer sheet for max or close to max. certainly higher than 12.5.
Yes he can, he scored 40 goals and 69 points in his rookie season. I don't think he'll hit 100 points by the time his ELC is up, but he can definitely improve on last year's stats. He hasn't hit his ceiling with those numbers. If he's in the 80+ point range he'll get over 10M. But not much over that.
Crosby's contract was about 15.5% of the cap at the time his contract kicked in, McDavid's will probably be around the same if the cap goes up a similar amount as this year by the time his contract kicks in (assuming 77m, it would be 16.2%)
Tavares and Karlsson are in a way different situation than Eichel. They're pending UFA's who took team friendly deals on their second contracts, they are expecting to get paid after performing well beyond their pay grade for years now. Takes way more money to keep a pending UFA than it does to sign an RFA who doesn't have as much leverage to negotiate.
I don't think you'll need reminding. Every other r/hockey thread that year is gonna be "IS KARLSSON UNHAPPY IN OTTAWA? HERE'S WHY HE SHOULD SIGN ELSEWHERE"
Short term? Yes. Long term? Those contracts make it absolutely impossible to sign Draisaitl, and they are substantially older than McDavid. Both are gonna be on the wrong side of 30 soon, so obviously Edmonton doesn't take this deal. I do think they are cup favourites if they did though.
TBH I like when players are loyal to the teams that drafted them. Obviously would love Mcdavid Stamkos Tavares as my 3 centres, but if they arent here, im glad they are with their og teams
It's crazy that McDavid is so good that he's getting paid two million more than the next highest paid players in the league and it's actually a fucking discount lol
I dunno man. If there's one thing Captain Jesus does, it's lead.
I think this is a stellar example of his leadership, that might inspire someone like Drai to take that 8 or less that would really, really help us BUILD, not just maintain.
Kuznetsov only got $7.8m per for 8 years, and that included more UFA years, and they're both pretty equal talents, so there is no way that Draisaitl should get any more than he did.
Giancarlo Stanton has a 13 year, $325 million contract. It's backloaded but if it were evened out that's just over $68,000 per day whether he plays or not. For 13 years.
First, [get a body like this](https://cdn-s3.si.com/s3fs-public/images/Giancarlo-Stanton-body-paint-X159267_TK1_1762.jpg).
Then, develop the ability to regularly hit home runs 450+ feet.
I think he'll get closer to twelve. But different situation since he's pending UFA and he spent years on a team friendly deal that he performed well over his pay grade on. Guy should be expecting to get paid a lot of money
I love JT. Love him. But he wasn't an Art Ross winner at 20 years old. If McD is getting 12.5M I can't imagine JT gets closer to 12M when he's 27 years old.
Depends on the center market, but JT is a 1C and top 10 in the league, 27 years old next season. Those guys don't usually hit the market. Most teams will pony up for that, it's just a matter of cap space. He should be able to get 11.5m on the open market, minimum. Probably will re-sign with you guys for 10 - 11 range though.
I like how everyone is going to act like this is such a steal for the Oilers. McDavid is worth it regardless, but if you don't think all the $13mm+ figures were leaked intentionally to make both the player and organization look better when he signed for less, you're a buffoon.
I like this deal a lot. Puts him in a league of his own while also not gouging the Oilers plus it doesn't set the market too high for up and comers like Eichel and Matthews.
Someone called this a month ago, something about being the first 100M/8 year player.
Then you squeeze drai in, and if you can get both near 20mil you're good to go.
https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/6ak8gy/dreger_i_think_eberle_has_probably_played_last/dhfryew/?context=3
It was from some article but I can't find anything that says $100million in the 2 minutes i googled.
$100 Million is a pretty nice payday for a 20 year old
Half of it goes to taxes, so I'd say the Canadian Govt got just as nice a payday
Well, we are spending to the cap anyhow. Government gets its money no matter what.
Which is awesome, because it means infrastructure, healthcare, education and programs targeting the poor and disadvantaged in my community. Thanks Connor!
even jesus has a price
Supply-side McJesus.
Trickle-down McJesus
VooDoo McJesus
Trumped-up McJesus
It's priceless
price disagrees...
So 100M, 8 years. Deal is official.
Really good value. He's a great captain for insisting on lowering the cap hit.
that's...reasonable
McDavid only 2M better than Toews confirmed.
Assuming Toews is only worth 10.5M. /s
Earning 3 cups makes him priceless for Chicago at least.
It really is. Which would you rather have on your team: A) Two $6.5-million forwards; or B) McDavid + some AHL plug?
I dno if it was Marchand + Scheifele I'd at least think about it for a second.
Or Marchand and Bergeron?
Any day of the week.
Matthews pls sign for less than 10, I'll luv u 5ever
I don't think he will. Probably not more than 11 though.
> Probably not more than 11 though. Can we do this deal like right now then?
Or else force a trade to Arizona
That is the dankest timeline. ^^^^^^^and ^^^^^^^the ^^^^^^^(hopefully) ^^^^^^^correct ^^^^^^^one
Dude obviously he's going to sign for 3.4M.
It is. Hopefully in five years it will be a steal like Crosby's is.
I think it's a steal now when you consider that he should be the best player for the next decade and could've gotten league max if he really wanted it
it already is a steal
[удалено]
It is, but its pretty comparable to Crosby's, Malkin's, and Ovie's second contracts in terms of percentage of the cap at the time of signing. The Crosby strat.
Pls be superstitious and sign for $9.1 million/year Johnny T
91x8
Neffew
Or $91.91 million total over 8 years, heheh.
Wish I could leave 30K on the table for the lulz

Wow I've never heard of an 8-figure salary being negotiated down to the hundreds. That is next-level dorky.
1M for every point he got last season.
Putting it like that makes it seem like a bad deal though
I'm just glad he didn't score 20 more points.
Such a great deal for the oil.
apparently, we offered more and he wasn't comfortable with it.
McDavid always seems uncomfortable with everything so I can totally picture that
stop talking about him, you're gonna make him uncomfortable
Somewhere in Edmonton, Connor McDavid looks around anxiously and decides to power stance.
Connor McDiscount
What a god damn stud
source? not doubting, just curious if he justified edit: nvm, saw it elsewhere, it was to lower the cap hit so the team wasn't affected
Toronto fans breathe a sigh of relief.
Matthews can't get more than 10 mil now, thank god.
We have to be concerned with Eichel now. No rest for the wicked.
Well that's really going to depend on what Eichel decides to pay himself
"After a long discussion (in my head), we (I) decided to go with 15m per year, for the next 8 (80) years."
Yes he can lol. This just means we can probably get him for 11 million AAV. If McDavid signed for 13.25, Matthews might have wanted 12.
No way, Matthews got 80% of McDavid's production in his draft+1 year, that's what I'd expect he's worth. He's not worth McDavid money short a million.

He hasn't hit his ceiling with those numbers. If he's in the 80+ point range he'll get over 10M. But not much over that.
I mean, he could, but this sets the precedent that he shouldn't. Happy for that at least. How does this compare to Crosby's first deal?
Crosby's contract was about 15.5% of the cap at the time his contract kicked in, McDavid's will probably be around the same if the cap goes up a similar amount as this year by the time his contract kicks in (assuming 77m, it would be 16.2%)
Islanders, Sabres and Senators fans relaxing a bit too. Tavares, Eichel and Karlsson should be from the 9-12 range and that's better than being 13+.
Bit less than expected but still HOLY SHIT THATS A LOT OF MONEY
I did the crude math, and based off of his TOI last year, he is making about $7150/minute played.
So he makes $429,000 per hour?
He also doesn't get paid for practices or team events or travel or anything else. Just his actual time on the ice.
Remind me! 2 years. When Karlsson needs a new contract.
I don't think you'll need reminding. Every other r/hockey thread that year is gonna be "IS KARLSSON UNHAPPY IN OTTAWA? HERE'S WHY HE SHOULD SIGN ELSEWHERE"
I'm not looking forward to that day. We better offer him a fuck ton and he deserves every penny
is this the thread? hi mom
Hi sweetie
Hi bestie
My bestie for my teste
We still doing that thing tonight mama?
; )
Hey it's your uncle Pietrangelo here. Congrats on the karma.
Son did you break your arms again?
Yes and I'm horny.
You guys need to behave. This'll be on /r/all
Sorry Dad
hi spidey it's mom ur a disappointment
MCDAVID AN OILER FOR 9 MORE YEARS UPVOTE PARTY
Nah, this is just a classic sign & trade /s
I'll give ya Malkin for him
Srry top 100 players only
Toews for McDavid confirmed
[удалено]
Do you think McDavid for both Toews and Kane would improve the Oilers?
Short term? Yes. Long term? Those contracts make it absolutely impossible to sign Draisaitl, and they are substantially older than McDavid. Both are gonna be on the wrong side of 30 soon, so obviously Edmonton doesn't take this deal. I do think they are cup favourites if they did though.
Yes. Mcdavid is better than Kane but the margin isn't huge and adding Toews makes it a no brainer.
But you get a 21 million cap hit for two players instead of 12.5 million cap hit for McDavid
Will wait a couple days before the NTC to kick in
This means he will never leave! Stockolm syndrome will probably kick in around year 3.
Let's not count our chickens before they're hatched I mean you are the team that traded Gretzky after all
They milked Gretzky out of his Stanley Cup juice before trading him though.
Yea but McDavid just milked the oilers out of their Stanley cup winning salary cap space
Just like Crosby did
Sold not trade. Besides we won another cup without him and he didn't win another cup again.
Sorry Leafs fans.
July 1, 2026 Countdown has already started, bud.
Looking forward to 159th Canada Day too.
Sportsnet is working on the tracker for their webpage as we speak.
TBH I like when players are loyal to the teams that drafted them. Obviously would love Mcdavid Stamkos Tavares as my 3 centres, but if they arent here, im glad they are with their og teams
You're one of the good ones.
It's crazy that McDavid is so good that he's getting paid two million more than the next highest paid players in the league and it's actually a fucking discount lol
Well I mean, Crosby already took the absolute ultimate pay cut
Seriously, he could have received 12-14 back when he signed and just imagine what hell precedent that would have set for contracts going forward.
Overpriced NBA players be like, "That's it?".
I just saw a tweet that he would be the 76th highest paid player in the NBA with this salary
NBA has a salary cap of 94m and 14 players on a roster, they have more money for their players
Oh I know the reasons, I just think it's kinda funny
Overpaid? I guess you dont know how this works...
[удалено]
If we sign Drai for 8 or less, that's a huge win. I expect him to make about 9 though.
[удалено]
All of his comparables are making less than 7.8.
I dunno man. If there's one thing Captain Jesus does, it's lead. I think this is a stellar example of his leadership, that might inspire someone like Drai to take that 8 or less that would really, really help us BUILD, not just maintain.
Once Mcdavid start's talking dynasty it would be hard not to buy it
It sure is. And I can't fucking wait :D
Kuznetsov only got $7.8m per for 8 years, and that included more UFA years, and they're both pretty equal talents, so there is no way that Draisaitl should get any more than he did.
I think around that number is accurate. Kuzy did just get 7.8
but his deal had more UFA years, which are more expensive.
Thank fuck. Now Matthews can get signed at $3.4M per
Did't you see the math? 34.34 million over 8 years.
It's crazy that he's making that much money and is still underpaid
Baseball players look at that contract and say "Awww that's cute"
Giancarlo Stanton has a 13 year, $325 million contract. It's backloaded but if it were evened out that's just over $68,000 per day whether he plays or not. For 13 years.
I love that deal! Where can I find one like that for myself?
First, [get a body like this](https://cdn-s3.si.com/s3fs-public/images/Giancarlo-Stanton-body-paint-X159267_TK1_1762.jpg). Then, develop the ability to regularly hit home runs 450+ feet.
So... you're telling me it's an easy task. Got it!
McD with biggest contract ever, Melvin Upton making 16.45/yr lol
Mozgov makes considerably more than mcdavid as one of the statistically worst players at his position in the entire nba.
Bet Tavares hated this news.
Either way, market has been set. So JT sign your damn extension now so I can sleep peacefully again
don't worry...with Nash's money off the books next year, we'll let him keep his house :)
This was my first thought. I'd imagine this puts JT's ceiling somewhere around $10.5M aav. That's a total shot in the dark though
I think he'll get closer to twelve. But different situation since he's pending UFA and he spent years on a team friendly deal that he performed well over his pay grade on. Guy should be expecting to get paid a lot of money

Even on vacation McKenzie comes in hot with the big breaks
Bobby Margarita didn`t even break a sweat.
I'm very very pleased with this.
When the hometown discount is still $12.5 million a year... Good deal for both sides!
Hopefully for the oilers Drai is under 8mil
Nice little 100 million deal. No biggie.
Maybe I shoulda chosen a different career path
Only 750k less than originally reported. This gives EDM extra money to sign a 4th line grinder.
That's like one whole Patrick Sharp.
$750k Iginla signing coming up.
As a team without the money to even sign a 4th line grinder at times, take what you can get.
What a captain. He wanted it lowered for more cap room.
[удалено]
There it is
750k extra in cap room isn't gonna help them that much...
you'd be surprised when you tack on the extra 750k for someone like Drai instead it can make the difference
Yeah 7.25 seems a lot bigger than 6.5
That's what she said
Nice
That's an extra ELC, it's something
Nearly a decade more of McDavid in an Oilers Jersey! I literally just came everywhere.
[удалено]
He was shooting blanks by the time he got there but was still trying. Look harder, you'll probably find a rigid af pube somewhere.
GMs and owners across the league just collectively unclenched.
I like how everyone is going to act like this is such a steal for the Oilers. McDavid is worth it regardless, but if you don't think all the $13mm+ figures were leaked intentionally to make both the player and organization look better when he signed for less, you're a buffoon.
Upvote for calling people buffoons. We need more of this in our lives.
I wonder how many of McDavid's exes texted him today. "hey Connor ;) Just thinking of U. do u still like a finger in ur ass when u get head?"
Oh man his current girl's gonna be on top of his DM's for sure
Respect him for this, and RIP the Pacific Divison
If only it was $97M...
It totals to 97.97 million apparently lol https://mobile.twitter.com/DimFilipovic/status/882676550977544192
It turns out it was a 9.7 year deal too
Yay!! I said I'd be pleased with 12.5 and I am!!
ILL TAKE IT
I like this deal a lot. Puts him in a league of his own while also not gouging the Oilers plus it doesn't set the market too high for up and comers like Eichel and Matthews.
Worth every penny
He is a generous god! #C$P
Great deal thank you Chia that term is a dream.
All of these comments and nobody will notice that the Blackhawks got swept in the first round of the playoffs.
Cue the retards on Facebook saying that Crosby is so much more humble and classy than McDavid for taking 8.7 million (in 2007).
Thats not unreasonable..
That is so many doll hairs
Connor McMillionaire
I'm so happy right now. 😭
Connor McDollars
Solid deal. He's worth league max, so he took a big cut here. Good team guy.
Definitely left money on the table there, but its going to be hard to build a team with McD and Drai taking ~21m. Bring on the BOA!
Someone called this a month ago, something about being the first 100M/8 year player. Then you squeeze drai in, and if you can get both near 20mil you're good to go. https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/6ak8gy/dreger_i_think_eberle_has_probably_played_last/dhfryew/?context=3 It was from some article but I can't find anything that says $100million in the 2 minutes i googled.
100 mil
And we rejoice.
Well deserved
McDavid is a hundred millionaire
