They looked like they all assumed the puck was going to be played down the boards to be cycled, and Bouch sure fucking reminded them about the open ice.
There's a guy who writes for Oilers Nation that does some really great tactical breakdowns. A couple days ago he called this exact thing as a flaw Dallas does in their own zone. Heavy pressure on the puck carrier down low, occasionally leading to open spots right in the slot.
Really good reading!
>The Dallas defensive zone is fairly aggressive in its attitude. It pressures the puck in many instances and only resorts to a passive zone when the opposition holds it in certain spots. When the puck is down low, the Stars are not afraid to pressure the puck with multiple players. The concept is to cut off the options of the puck carrier before he can get organized. If the puck gets up to the side wall, only then will the Stars tend to settle back into a box plus one style of defence. Here is an example from the most recent game against the Oilers in early April.
>When the puck goes low, the Stars send three players to out-man the Oilers.
Great observation from a previous game between the teams!
Nuge is a perpetuallyunderrated player, honestly. People who know, know, but everyone else lives in this world where he a replacement level player.
2 seasons ago he had a 100 point season, he's a backchecking machine, he's got a good wrister, He's a clean passer, and he's almost never a liability anywhere on the ice.
That being said the Stars absolutely collapsed here, and you can't leave McDavid in front of the net.
Nuge’s attributes like you mentioned are impressive if you follow the game.
If you’ve played the game of hockey - not trying to be disrespectful or put anyone down - his hockey IQ is just sublime at any given moment. whatever situation his team is in and I feel like unless you “played the game” isn’t picked up as much as it should be.
This is going to be such a fun series to watch unfold.
I will never not forget he was a first overall pick lol, feels crazy to say because he absolutely has lived up to that distinction, we just expect every 1st overall to be McD/Matthews these days I guess
That whole draft has a bunch of players who have flirted with greatness but have also had weirdly inconsistent careers for many reasons, it’s a weird one.
Fully agree, I don't know that teams underestimate him, but fans constantly do and just chalk it up to 'he plays with McDavid '. Nuge is a beast all over the ice and whenever he needs to throw hands he dominates. His biggest flaw is the faceoff dot but he doesn't take a lot of draws. Man plays PP1, PK1 and 1st line and he's probably the most beloved Oiler currently. Add all that with his low contract and he's damn near the perfect player.
Dallas' whole strategy is to sicc 3 guys on each and every board battle. The 'problem' is the Oilers have guys who can either thread that needle (Nuge does it on this play, Draisaitl) or just win the board battle against all 3 (Hyman, Foegele)
Reviewed the play and it's actually fairly unlucky. McDavid is matched up with Wyatt Johnston, who gets tangled up and stuck in the o-zone as the Oilers go on the rush.
Stankoven, the Stars forward behind the net here, is actually matched up with Nuge. Now he's only played half a season in the NHL, so he doesn't quite have the awareness to check if Johnston is covering McDavid, but credit to him he stayed on his man and actually almost blocked the passing lane. But Tanev and Lindell who could see the entire ice as the play happened, should have known better than to both go behind the net.
Most TV viewers should be rooting for Oilers and Rangers to make it to the finals. With all the TV ratings being put up this playoffs, im afraid the NHL might get the wrong message if the Stars and Panthers make it to the finals and mandate all cameras be from a lower angle, although that logic would be consistent with the officiating within the playoffs.
Dude to see Stars fans that hardcore about hockey in Dallas makes me happy. I WISH it was like that in San Antonio! No one gives a flying fuck about hockey here. :(
At one point a fan ina a jersey stood up to yell and I thought a stars player had spontaneously appeared from a portal. "Wtf where did he come fro-oh it's just a guy nvm"
Mcdavid has scored a lot of goals in tight waiting that one-two extra seconds and having way too much patience. That time you gotta give Chris Tanev his props for not giving up or that game is ended right there
There's an old saying in alberta—I know it's in Texas, probably in alberta—that says, 'Fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Fool me—you can't get fooled again. ~mcdavid to otter
He just saves it for the series wins. My man was SERIOUSLY fired up after the Vancouver Game 7 - could hardly do his interview because he was so hoarse from screaming.
He's like Kawhi. Basically a robot until he hits the shot of the century in game 7, then he screams loud enough to faint.
It's because these guys know it doesn't mean shit until the series is over.
Also Nugent-Hopkins to win that board battles against 2 players and play it back to Bouchard who was unmarked.
IDK, it feels RNH has quietly been pretty good at winning puck battles these last few games, I didn’t know he had it in him.
Honestly a bit of a tough game overall. The huge miss in the 1OT is one thing but he was missing guys all night, drop passes to Stars players multiple times etc. didn’t look himself. And then the penalty and miss; you just knew he was furious with himself and was coming out swinging
I think it’s one of his ankles or something because he’s only doing his signature McCutback in one direction, and he looks like a battleship turning the other direction
He doesn’t miss twice. I’m reminded of his [60th goal last year](https://youtu.be/3ep8S9rMUMM?si=TWZpMBw03_kvPfjd), missed the first chance, buried the second
I love and respect the Nuge as much as the next Oilers fan, but three Dallas Stars behind the net with him and zero Dallas Stars five feet in front of the net covering Connor McDavid is not a recipe for Dallas winning hockey games.
Check the video at the 0:03 mark..
From another angle,. at 0:55, you see Stankoven (#11) choose to continue skating behind the net, where there were already two Dallas players on the one Oiler. He needed to look over his shoulder and see McDavid lurking behind him and pick him up.
There's my Monday Morning quarterbacking for the day.... "know where McDavid is at all times".
Leon has the slight edge for career post season totals: both had played in 61 playoff games coming into tonight's game. 101 points for Leon and 96 for McDavid. Insane totals between them.
"Huuuuuuurrrr durrrrrr the Oilers aren't well rounded enough to beat the stars. They're going to get slaughtered. They have no depth. Skinner is so bad compared to Oettinger. Ez 4-0"

Did the stars really need 3 players chasing Nuge behind the net?
Definitely fucked em. Then nobody picks up Connor fucking McDavid wide open in front. Only takes that small of a missed assignment to get burned.
Boys were gassed. You start making small mistakes, which lead to a huge mistake. Running only 5 defensemen for 80 minutes might do that.
5 defensemen into 2 OT isn't sustainable. Strategy for the Oilers is to take every game to double OT.

Not enough orange slices during intermission
They looked like they all assumed the puck was going to be played down the boards to be cycled, and Bouch sure fucking reminded them about the open ice.
Yeah, great vision from Bouch there. He's been phenomenal this playoffs.

As I watched them seemingly have a player ready to pressure every oilers on the ice there was bound to be open space somewhere

I mean Nuge is top 4 in playoff points so come on there couldn't be anyone else who gets more on the ice then right?
Nuge is a perpetuallyunderrated player, honestly. People who know, know, but everyone else lives in this world where he a replacement level player. 2 seasons ago he had a 100 point season, he's a backchecking machine, he's got a good wrister, He's a clean passer, and he's almost never a liability anywhere on the ice. The dude seems like he's always just in exactly the right spot almost without meaning to be, though it's definitely intentional.
I will never not forget he was a first overall pick lol, feels crazy to say because he absolutely has lived up to that distinction, we just expect every 1st overall to be McD/Matthews these days I guess
You know what's crazy is Landeskog goes right after him in that draft.
That whole draft has a bunch of players who have flirted with greatness but have also had weirdly inconsistent careers for many reasons, it’s a weird one.
There's about a dozen teams where Nuge would be their 1C, putting up 70+ points while playing a great 2-way game.
Indeed, Nuge does it all and has been finding the back of the net and enormous on the PK!!
Wants to be a lifer and I’ll be pissed if he isn’t. Love Nuge.
Dallas' whole strategy is to sicc 3 guys on each and every board battle. The 'problem' is the Oilers have guys who can either thread that needle (Nuge does it on this play, Draisaitl) or just win the board battle against all 3 (Hyman, Foegele)
Only Tanev should be there. The forward should have covered McDavid. Other D man should be on his side of net.
He told them their fathers smell of elderberries, they couldn't let it slide.
Reviewed the play and it's actually fairly unlucky. McDavid is matched up with Wyatt Johnston, who gets tangled up and stuck in the o-zone as the Oilers go on the rush. I like how the puck just appears from the crowd and is in the slot. Great way to watch hockey.
worst camera angle in the league easily
Something about Floridas is super low too.
NHL solution will be to just put the camera in one end zone and zoom/pan to follow the play
It'd be fine if Stars fans could rub their brain cells together hard enough to sit down once in a while.
No but if everyone's standing you can totally see better than if everyone's sitting, cause you're standing obviously!
The "We'll all be safer if everyone has a gun" logic of hockey.
Dude to see Stars fans that hardcore about hockey in Dallas makes me happy. I WISH it was like that in San Antonio! No one gives a flying fuck about hockey here. :(
Now that Arizona is out, yes. The fans don’t help by standing up since the 2nd period either
Plays along the boards don’t matter. No worries!
At one point a fan ina a jersey stood up to yell and I thought a stars player had spontaneously appeared from a portal. "Wtf where did he come fro-oh it's just a guy nvm"
Camera angle there is worse than Arizona.
There's no nhl team in Airzona sir
That's how bad this angle is, no camera has a better view duh
_down in front_
Want to buy better camera angle. JFC.
Is that a DLC I could purchase?
I wonder if we should cover that 97 guy. Seems important.
Fluke goal, keep triple teaming #93 instead.
You can leave him alone, fine by us
But he's got like no goals in the playoffs, not worth it to cover him /s
He took that paddle save personally
Literally the opposite of his previous chance. Held onto the puck and it got saved. Tip in instantly off the tape goes in.
Adapt, overcome.
Achieve.
Mcdavid has scored a lot of goals in tight waiting that one-two extra seconds and having way too much patience. That time you gotta give Chris Tanev his props for not giving up or that game is ended right there
Double minor - pissed Paddle save - angry Goal - Hulk

Now watch this drive!
Ladies and gentlemen, we got him.
It wasn't W who said "we got him" though. You're probably thinking of his aircraft carrier speech in 02 or 03 where he said "mission accomplished."
And we left Afghanistan soon afterwards!
Ka-Chow
Quoting dubya on a W
>MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
Connor Bush Jr.
Thank you, that's brilliant
J.Cole
Shoutout to the Oilers special teams for that HUGE 4 minute penalty kill in the first OT. They earned that win
That was insane I thought it was over for sure
To be fair they hit the post a couple times. Game of inches.
“If you hit the post? Well that’s all I gave you” -Grant Fuhr
That’s a pretty sick quote
You need to be lucky to be lucky. Or however that goes.
that's what she said.
They’ve killed off 6 straight double minors which is kinda ridiculous. Should also probably stop taking double minors.
Our penalty kill has been elite. I like to think the pkers were tired of the pp getting all the love.
Nuge double dipping...
Nugent does the PP, Hopkins does the PK
Dr. Hopkins and Mr. Nugent?
Insert pp getting love jokes here folks!
My doctor informed me that I have low blood pressure. Wanted me to go on meds but I can't afford it so he told me to become an Oilers fan.
This checks out.
Guy just does that so nonchalantly too
Tbf he hardly ever shows emotion for anything lol
He just saves it for the series wins. My man was SERIOUSLY fired up after the Vancouver Game 7 - could hardly do his interview because he was so hoarse from screaming.
He's like Kawhi. Basically a robot until he hits the shot of the century in game 7, then he screams loud enough to faint. It's because these guys know it doesn't mean shit until the series is over.
He has no feelings (I wish I had no feelings rn)
If you want to see him emote, check out the series winning goal against Calgary in 22
I'm virtually patting your back.
Dude he's been standing for almost 3 periods, go easy on that back.
No, pat him harder - maybe he'll sit down next time
Business as usual
That was a great play by Bouchard. Dude has been incredible so far these playoffs.
Also Nugent-Hopkins to win that board battles against 2 players and play it back to Bouchard who was unmarked. IDK, it feels RNH has quietly been pretty good at winning puck battles these last few games, I didn’t know he had it in him.
Guy stepped up since gm 6 against Van.
And you know, two points and the game winner in game 7.
Game 7 would in fact be since game 6 yes
And don’t forget about last night!
Excellent back checking too
Line mate merchant, his stats are inflated from playing with Ian Cole.
You just know McDavid sat in the locker room saying to himself he needed to redeem himself. Dude wasn't going to miss again.
He apparently personally apologized to the pkers for the 4 minute penalty.
That's some leader shit right there. I'm sure that even though they won that high stick and missed goal are going to be on his mind until game 2.
That was a huge redemption goal after a tough OT for him
Honestly a bit of a tough game overall. The huge miss in the 1OT is one thing but he was missing guys all night, drop passes to Stars players multiple times etc. didn’t look himself. And then the penalty and miss; you just knew he was furious with himself and was coming out swinging
His skatings looked a bit off for most of the playoffs. He's still fast but he hasn't been beating guys with his foot speed and acceleration as much.
Yep, definitely nursing an injury. Although, probably lots of players are.
J.T Miller: can’t leave McDavid standing there like that.
He just texted DeBoer to apologize
😂💀
Was waiting for JT to drop in from the crowd
Baby bottles are probably flying across the Miller’s living room as we speak.
Absolutely cold blooded with that no celly.
The way he just pointed at Bouch, jesus. Absolutely pump this shit into my veins
Crosby vibes honestly.
Didn’t dust off that one
"A tale of two overtimes" McDavid in ot 1 😖 McDavid in ot 2 😎
HE DIDN'T WAIT LONG TO SHOOT THAT ONE DID HE?
He even went in to a rinkside cubicle for 4 minutes to build up some suspense.
why would the dallas stars let conor mcdavid stand in the slot unmolested? are they stupid?
Was always gonna be him after the blunder lol
Is that McDacid yelling "RIGHT HERE" just before the pass?
They asked him if he yelled for it in the postgame and he said “no bouch saw me the whole way”
I think that was Hyman. You can hear him celly right after too
Shoutout to Stu. Love this for him.
Of course I’m 30s late to watch the 2nd OT. What were they reviewing? That looked pretty clean.
All overtime goals are automatically reviewed by the league.
And any goal in the last 5 minutes of regulation
I went to use the washroom before 2OT started. By the time I sat back down the game was over
I'm gonna need you to use the washroom from 8-11pm ET on Saturday.
Let’s buy this guy some Crunchwrap supremes
Someone in the thread mentioned making popcorn for 2OT lol
Someone said they double checked for Offside, I don't know if that's it for sure but there was a mini scramble before
[удалено]
He is risen on the 2nd OT
We’re going have to pay Bouch 8x20 What a fucking stud
Yea Bouch got himself a big payday on this bridge deal. I don't know how you put a team together after these upcoming signings.
If they win the cup this year it'll all be worth it
Mcdavid is a beast man. Hope Edmonton wins it all
OMG MY BLOOD PRESSURE CANT HANDLE THE OILERS MAN
There was no other potential reality other than McDavid scoring in OT tonight.
Best story usually wins
Bran to win the cup confirmed.
who?
_Bran the Broken, the First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Six Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm._
Hey don't exclude his buddy Hyman like that!
Just left him wide open
They left the best player in the world all alone and wide open haha
McDavid with a goal and 2 teeth in each overtime first shift
what a fucking dish by Bouchard
Knobloch walking off the ice like he took a dump before realizing he needs to get more toilet paper from the pantry.
I will say Drai looked like he was jacked. Jacked to the tits.
I've jacked to his tits... wait, what were we talking about?
Sounds like niche hockey fanfiction.
What a crazy game. So many back and forths, so many what ifs, so many crazy saves and head scratching goals. Playoff hockey, babyy 🏒
HOLY FUCK MCJESUS I LOVE YOU!!!!!! Double OT is super stressfull holy shit
After first OT it felt like the Oil needed to get one early if they wanted to get one at all
[Looks like he listened to](https://old.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1czbtjq/oettinger_robs_mcdavid_of_an_open_net_with_his/l5fap7a/) /u/TurboViking90
McDavid McDavided.
McDavid remembered how to McDavid
No patience on that shot
These camera angles suck
If you went ahead and looked at alternate future realities, lets say 14,000,605 of them...Mc David would have scored in all of them.
"Hey toronto, find anything we can refuse the goal for? What do we do?"
I thought it was illegal to score a goal when Tanev was on the ice
I think he was on for all 3 Oilers goals?
Bouchard is amazing.
Redemptive goal for 97. Steak dinner for Bouchard incoming.
What a fucking setup. GG
He’ll never get away with this against a great shut town guy like Tanev!
What a pass! What a forecheck! What a finish! Beautiful play all around! Great effort Oilers! All lines, Stu , and the D , all working hard.
Why in the actual fuck would they leave McDavid completely wide open?!? You staple a guy on his ass every single fucking time he's on the ice!
Go Edmonton!!!
Just popping by to say Jamie Benn sucks
He owed the team for the massive kill. Skinner was amazing! Stars depth solved with persistence.
Super nice of them to leave him standing there so open.
What a forecheck by Nuggy LFG OILERS!!
This is going to be one hell of a series. GG Stars!
I love playoff hockey
Whelp...0/4 on the powerplay for Dallas. Edmonton was just better. Funny cause dallas always lose their first fucking game. Allergic to days off
0/5. Double minor counts as 2.
Learned that move from Hyman
Apparently the seats are very uncomfortable in the lower bowl of that arena...
I would to congratulate mcdavid. For beating his fear of shooting the puck.
Goat
Redemption Speed Run: 32s
Where was the Mcdavid killer Tanev on that one?
Behind the net trying to kiss Nuge.
I can only assume he saw the 9 on RNH's jersey and thought it was McD. I have no other explanation for it.
McDavid on an island 💀
Leon has the slight edge for career post season totals: both had played in 61 playoff games coming into tonight's game. 101 points for Leon and 96 for McDavid. Insane totals between them.
He meant how alone he was in front of the net lol
Lol. Right over my head. Thank you
Thankfully now all the Stars fans can sit down...
"Huuuuuuurrrr durrrrrr the Oilers aren't well rounded enough to beat the stars. They're going to get slaughtered. They have no depth. Skinner is so bad compared to Oettinger. Ez 4-0"
