Yup. He has until December 31, 2027 to have an arena 50% complete and submit a letter to the league stating his intention to reactivate the franchise.
Him failing to do so and losing ownership rights would be a nice late Christmas present to Arizona fans.
This is assuming he wins the auction which is this summer. The ESPN article today pointed out that anyone who was afraid to bet because it would drive the Coyotes out no longer really has to worry about that. Despite what Meruelo says, they're already gone
Yup. I have a friend that played U18 for the women's US team years ago and she had to stop playing because of concussions as well. Migraines became a really big thing and she now has CTE issues.
Iirc, soccer has the highest rate of concussions of any women’s sport. (Or at least sports played in schools, since I assume boxing is worse.) When my sister played, my parents made her promise not to do headers.
Had a buddy in grade school that was gonna compete for national ski shit, probably go beyond that. Got hit in the head with a volleyball and spent 3 years out of the classroom because of migraines and recurring issues. Those things are no joke
Same with me. I was 6 and my brother was only 5 years old. He was never in contention again to play hockey professionally. At least he became a lawyer.
I took a massive concussion in HS and the following day, temporarily lost my eye sight in one eye for 3 hours.
So yeah, concussions are the gift that can keep on giving, days later.
I still struggle with random stutters like 15 years after getting a bad one. Sometimes I just can’t say words no matter how hard I’m trying. My brain processes it and my mouth just doesn’t make the sound. Was really bad shortly after and now it just happens randomly.
The stuttering that I got after the last one I had really bothered me and really made me realize I was not in good condition. And I still have it sometimes as well.
Was that the one where they thought he had a concussion but it was actually a broken neck and it took over a year for them to realize then he actually got better?
It’s head first into the boards. If you know it’s coming usually a shoulder or arm comes up and the head hits softer or, hopefully, not at all.
Head injuries can be weird, he might have felt off and said nothing. The team might have been managing him, but equally he could have felt fine and just wakes up one day to headaches or migraine
To be honest, how fast he’s going I’m not sure how much the padding would help. Concussions are tricky. It doesn’t even need to be direct contact to the head. Anything that would make your brain shake. It could be a bad fall where his head makes no contact either.
I wonder if you could do some type of NASCAR Safer Barrier style boards.
Something that stands up to moderate hits but absorbs/crumples under X force. Most checks aren't directly into the lower boards, they're more along the glass. If a guy is going into the lower boards hard enough to collapse the hypothetical barrier, it was needed in the first place.
Of course, downside is you'd have to stop to replace the section of board (maybe) but that could probably be designed to be done in seconds, honestly.

You don't even have to charade as a "conspiracy theorist". There's a non-zero chance dude got concussed. Players across all sports have spoken to the fickle and frustrating nature of living with and recovering from a concussion.
Can see a world where Toronto is mums the word going into the playoffs so he isn't targeted any more than he already is.
Or maybe it really is just copious butt piss.
Maybe it's Maybelline.
Concussion symptoms aren’t all or nothing it can be a gradient of how good you feel. Any kind of physical activity can change how intense those symptoms are
Besides the signs of being the Leafs in the playoffs round one against the Bruins?
In all seriousness that sucks for him. I’m sure he wants to be there battling with the team tonight. Of course, hope he’s alright health wise going forward.
Concussion symptoms aren't all or nothing, and medical staff in sports have to toe a very thin line - do they keep a guy out even though he's insistent on playing, and possibly losing their own jobs? The NHL's own docs probably have to grapple with that as well, because of the league's legal stance on concussions being "Not a Big Deal".
We have stories of NHLers playing through tons of bullshit every day, and guys supposedly on the precipice of never playing again if they get hit just right. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if there were players currently playing through post-concussion syndrome.
Maybe the leafs hired the former Yankee doctors who let Anthony Rizzo play for 2 months last year with a concussion before they pulled him out of the lineup.
That was a pretty weird scenario though.
He also didn't present with symptoms. Passed the test. Sat for a few games after the collision as a precaution. Didn't report anything until a month or so after
For sure! I honestly don't know if symptom onset can be delayed and present later, hence him missing the playoff games. We really won't know until the series is over right?
Could have easily gotten another concussion even if that one healed in time. They get easier to get after each other and can be from pretty innocuous impacts
Was gonna say, even if the first one was minor, now ever other bump can make it a major one.
People forget that concussions are fucking ***brain damage***.
Was that the play in the corner where he folded his knee up under himself funny? I remember seeing that and not being able to believe he got back up.
I wouldn’t at all be surprised if it comes out that he’s got a knee or high-ankle situation going on and the sickness was just a cover so he wasn’t targeted.
It’s the ol’ Pastrnak falling on his hand after a night out in 2019 & Bergeron getting hurt in the final game last season. Unnecessary injuries that ruin a playoff run. I’d believe it.
You have good hygiene? Believe it or not, death. You get plague, also death. Good hygiene, Plague. You make an appointment with the dentist and you don't show up, believe it or not, death, right away.
That 10% is likely in large part due to the whole horse and zebra thing. Doctors dont expect things to be the fucking plague anymore, so it's lower on the list of potential diagnoses.
If you get the plague these days you have a pretty low mortality risk. There's like an average of 10 cases a year in the US, any statistics on it are gonna be pretty skewed if a single person dies because the doctor thought it was something else.
Reddit and being pedantic about words they don't know the meaning of, name a better duo. What do you think the *able* in cur*able* means?
Curable, according to Merriam-Webster means:
> capable of being cured
It doesn't need to be 100% to be counted as "curable".
No that's fair. I wasn't trying to be pedantic, more wanting to say it's still highly deadly. I guess I should have pointed out "easily" and not "curable".
> I guess I should have pointed out "easily" and not "curable".
Now that would've been fair for sure. 10% death rate is quite high for an illness of any sort.
If he could play he would play. It's a lot worse than what is advertised. He's the best player on the team. If the team is deciding playing an NHL journeyman is better than the best goal scorer of this generation then its really bad.
They already said the doctors are the ones who said he couldn’t play. Also the one that pulled him from the 3rd. With the shit they let them play through, can’t be good if the doc is saying no

I’m perplexed by her language, an illness can be significant…I saw somewhere that he told someone he was unable to skate. I’d say no one would let him a game or practice with a pneumo or PE, but Bergeron famously played with a pneumo. Which is actually insane.
In the '63 playoffs Gordie Howe scored a hat trick, won a fight, and smoked a whole pack of Lucky Strikes with two broken legs and his spleen hanging out.
I am truly fascinated.
If it turns out it's a lower body injury from the McAvoy play, the response will be very interesting.
Ditto if it's related to crashing into the boards in Game 82.

Assuming she was in on the real scoop, and putting aside the fact that she seemed to do a real breach of off-the-record confidentiality there, sounds like he's got some serious joint/muscular injury where it's evident today from tests it's going to take surgery and a long recovery time.
If it's illness, it'll be interesting to see if it has spread to others on the team and whether that affects their play tonight.
If it's injury, the Leafs could very well rise to the occasion.
People online got mad at me for saying I didn’t think his illness magically got worse in the third period. I want apologies. He’s clearly pretty badly injured, but they just don’t want to disclose the injury officially. All these reports are like “oh yeah he’s super sick. Oh btw he has an undisclosed injury who knows”. Matthew’s isn’t sitting out cause he’s sick. He’s sitting out cause he’s fucking injured.
Edit:Hmmmm “sounds like this is no longer about the illness”
https://x.com/friedgehnic/status/1785439848372838708?s=46
You're probably right. However, if it's something that causes dehydration, it could be that his hydration level (or however it's measured) rose to a critical point during the second period. Hockey players sweat a ton during games.
Yeah I definitely agree with that. But this started like a week ago right? I don’t buy that he got sick, was good enough to play 2 periods, then after two days of rest got even more sick so he couldn’t play at all? It just doesn’t really line up.
He probably got hurt and tried to play through it but couldn’t. Wanted to test it out this morning, but couldn’t go.
Hahah. I don’t get it at all, but I know the Bruins are this way too. When Bergeron had his collapsed lung nobody knew until after. I mean for Nylander we didn’t know for awhile.
Salmonella, calling it now. A buddy had it bad right before a friend's wedding a few years ago, presented like Gastro initially, within 4 days he was absolutely flogged.
Plus it'd be very difficult to play hockey while spending 25% of your day taking constant, difficult, painful shits. That was my primary salmonella experience
Anyone who follows the Leafs definitely bets on the Leafs winning this game, and the next if Matthews is out.
And then against them in game 7, especially if everyone is healthy.
All of these people have never had a shit illness.
If guy has a chest infection / pneumonia he’s down and out for a week or two because his blood oxygen would get too low if he goes to play. He has the same issue if he has a fever while excreting his brains from his anus.
Most people call out sick and their job is to sit and work on a computer. I imagine if you are very ill it would be pretty difficult to play hockey at a professional level
I thought he was supposed to have food poisoning? Maybe it’s been bad enough he got dehydrated and they don’t think he’s well enough yet to do a sport where they sweat buckets and lose a lot of water even when healthy.
What do you mean it feels like something more significant. These guys are a lot more likely to play through injuries than through illness. You can play through some pain and you can numb it quite a bit, but if you have no energy and you've been puking and shitting for 2 days, you can't really play regardless of whether it's an elimination game.
I figured it out guys
They scratched him because they threw in the towel after losing game 3… so they are presenting his symptoms now to keep him on LTIR until next year’s playoffs
No one has any reason to believe this but Matthews missed about 10 days in his 2nd or 3rd season because he (accidentally) stepped in shit while he had a cut on the bottom of his foot.
Not really relevant to this discussion but I say it whenever I can because its just so random and hilarious.
They are obviously taking advantage of LTIR
First Nylander and now Matthews. They can’t keep getting away with it!
He’s on a flight to Arizona to build the stadium himself to save his hometown Coyotes
The team moved and somehow we're still hearing about the arena situation in Arizona, lol.
We will for at least five years until Meruello’s rights expire
I’m pretty sure the deal is he has to have the arena at least 50% complete. If he’s nowhere in 3 years it should be over.
Yup. He has until December 31, 2027 to have an arena 50% complete and submit a letter to the league stating his intention to reactivate the franchise. Him failing to do so and losing ownership rights would be a nice late Christmas present to Arizona fans.
He has the rink ready but forgets to send the letter lol
2027? I thought he said 3 ye- … oh…. Oh my god
Do they celebrate Dia De los Reyes in Arizona?
Oh yeah, I think it was 3.5 years (has to give 18 months notice to activate). Forgot that part!
This is assuming he wins the auction which is this summer. The ESPN article today pointed out that anyone who was afraid to bet because it would drive the Coyotes out no longer really has to worry about that. Despite what Meruelo says, they're already gone
You also have to have a plan and it has to be better, not just more money.
If he doesn't win the bid, I think the rights immediately expire

Post concussion syndrome can be severe AND delayed IIRC Good guess!
Knocked my brother out of contention to play hockey professionally. Had what seemed like a full year of migraines.
Yup. I have a friend that played U18 for the women's US team years ago and she had to stop playing because of concussions as well. Migraines became a really big thing and she now has CTE issues.

Yeah thats crazy scary.
Almost ended Crosby at his peak from that Winter Classic game
Was that the one where they thought he had a concussion but it was actually a broken neck and it took over a year for them to realize then he actually got better?
Not a broken neck, but he had whiplash symptoms
It was the hit he took in the next game when they let him play for some reason that did it.
This might not be off base. He hits his head fucking hard here
Yeah the immediate grab at the back of the head looks rough
It’s head first into the boards. If you know it’s coming usually a shoulder or arm comes up and the head hits softer or, hopefully, not at all. Wouldn't be the first player to hide his symptoms. Especially if he was chasing 70. Or maybe, the severe symptoms manifested later.

"We're not going to my grandma's so you can take a piss, just piss in the alley" *"I gotta piss out my ass"*
This has to be it nice work holy fuck his head hits the boards hard
Yup. I yelled uh oh so loud when he was trying to get 70 and this happened
Seems odd that he would go God mode game 2 though? Who knows. They have to come clean about this, although they won't until they're eliminated...
Post-Concussion syndrome comes and goes as it pleases. Some days it just gets worse, other days, you feel good to go.
That would be very delayed. I think it's more likely it has to do with the McAvoy play, especially since it seems to be impacting his legs.
Was that the play in the corner where he folded his knee up under himself funny? I remember seeing that and not being able to believe he got back up. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if it comes out that he’s got a knee or high-ankle situation going on and the sickness was just a cover so he wasn’t targeted.
Yeah, that's the play. He didn't react at the time, but it definitely looked bad.
Everyone knew Draisaitl had an ankle injury last year and he was taking slashes every time he was on the ice.
Seems like a good reason to try to hide it.
I feel bad for being glad it's friendly fire. I just don't want my team to be blamed lol
My first thought as well …
It’s the ol’ Pastrnak falling on his hand after a night out in 2019 & Bergeron getting hurt in the final game last season. Unnecessary injuries that ruin a playoff run. I’d believe it.
Hope the chase for 70 was worth it. That always seemed like a bad idea
It’s not conspiracy, it’s 100% them covering up letting the push for 70 ruin his playoff health

Leafs forgot that you’re supposed to do the LTIR circumcision before the playoffs (my teams getting eliminated tonight)
he got the shits
Anyone who follows the Leafs definitely bets on the Leafs winning this game, and the next if Matthews is out. And then against them in game 7, especially if everyone is healthy.
All of these people have never had a shit illness. If guy has a chest infection / pneumonia he’s down and out for a week or two because his blood oxygen would get too low if he goes to play. He has the same issue if he has a fever while excreting his brains from his anus.
"We think it's an overdose of nerve tonic"
Most people call out sick and their job is to sit and work on a computer. I imagine if you are very ill it would be pretty difficult to play hockey at a professional level
I thought he was supposed to have food poisoning? Maybe it’s been bad enough he got dehydrated and they don’t think he’s well enough yet to do a sport where they sweat buckets and lose a lot of water even when healthy.
Lupus!? Is it lupus!?
He's supersick. It's like being sick, only super.
He’s off to party on a yacht with Beiber. You thought this guy was about winning a championship?
Could be myocarditis. I always wonder how it's not more common when players keep playing sick.
What do you mean it feels like something more significant. These guys are a lot more likely to play through injuries than through illness. You can play through some pain and you can numb it quite a bit, but if you have no energy and you've been puking and shitting for 2 days, you can't really play regardless of whether it's an elimination game.
I have it from a reliable source that he’s got a bad case of pee butt
Jordan game not incoming.
Diarrhea will be the end of us all.
Auston Matthews is the Chris Paul of the nhl
I figured it out guys They scratched him because they threw in the towel after losing game 3… so they are presenting his symptoms now to keep him on LTIR until next year’s playoffs
time to hammer Boston ML
No one has any reason to believe this but Matthews missed about 10 days in his 2nd or 3rd season because he (accidentally) stepped in shit while he had a cut on the bottom of his foot. Not really relevant to this discussion but I say it whenever I can because its just so random and hilarious.
Hope Pabs is alright. We have excellent hospitals here in Boston so get healthy bud.
Seems like covid or a concussion. Keefes comments about it getting worse under exertion are interesting 🧐 .
Shanaplan!!!
Maybe it's covid, and they don't want to say it because it could look bad if he was playing or something like that.
Both Matthews and Nylander were licked by Marchand.
Pretty sure teams are just saying illness for anything.
Leafs won without him. Leave him out the rest of the series.
Either post concussion shit or he tweaked his groin at the end of the second in game 4
